Title: BB: NJAC: New Jersey Athletic Conference
Post by: Knightstalker on December 30, 2005, 11:57:20 AM
The  NJAC  (http://njac.net/) website link.

Two NJAC teams in the preseason top thirty.  Rowan #5 and Kean tied at #20 with Ithaca, MSU also getting some consideration.

I hope there is some activity here, NJCU had a team that was almost all freshmen last season and they had a pretty good season playing in the CUNY.  I hope they have some success this year in the NJAC.

The good news is everyone of those 20+ freshmen, including all 8 freshmen starters, are back this season.

That's really good news, I think there is real promise for those kids if they stick around for the next three years.

The Profs' baseball season preview is online.  Curious to see that Robert Rose of Piscataway, who was listed as an incoming QB for Rowan this Fall that never made their roster is in line for a spot in the rotation.

http://www.rowan.edu/sports/spring/baseball/releases/2006Baseball/BaseballOutlook06.pdf

Profs key additions include:

OF Tim Edmeads - D3 JUCO Player of the Year for perennial D3 JUCO powerhouse Gloucester CC, two years of eligibility.  Drafted by the White Sox out of high school in the 49th Round.  Played his freshman year at West Virginia where he hit .284 (21-74), 2, 7.  Edmeads was the 2003 Courier Post Player of the Year at Buena H.S.

RHP Alexy Still - Transfer from NAIA Vanguard University (CA), two years of eligibility, had played at Camden CC, Cherry Hill West Grad.

RHP Kevin O'Hara - All-South Jersey frosh from perennial H.S. power Gloucester Catholic figures to be in the rotation.

3B Miguel Sosa - transfer from D1 FIU with three years of eligibility, never played for the powerhouse program that has seen at least two players sign pro deals every year since 1989.  Ranero's stop at Barry Univ. had to help this kid coming in, who was born in Miami.

Rowan begins their season on Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan and Cortland State.  I think #5 in the country is way too high considering the pitching they lost, but it only proves how most "national polls" in D3 just look at previous years' results and program reputation over true talent evaluation.

JPS93

P.S.  Rose threw for over 1,400 yards in H.S. and a school-record 25 touchdowns.  Wonder why he didn't come out for football, or did he and didn't make the cut?  Perhaps play JV?  Anyone with info, please feel free to fill us in.  He certainly could have contributed last season...

Hey JPS,

Is that your voice on the Yankee Ticket line?  I'm like I know that voice.  Guess who finally has season tickets?  Good for customers and stuff.  Should have done it a while ago.  I wanna try and accumulate a nice block of tickets over the next couple of years so when the new stadium is done, I'm set.

JT,

Yep, part of my duties involves voicing the phone system.  The general greeting is a Yankees player on the main number, but the majority of the other prompts and departments are me.

Let me know when you're coming out to the stadium this season.  If you come early, I can give you a quick tour of the press area.

New stadium is coming in 2009.  Groundbreaking is this May.

I hear Orihel is already lifting and throwing again.  When does Spring conditioning start?

Also, I saw the baseball team on Sunday.  Defense isn't great, and the bottom of the order is a bit light.  But batters 1-5 are quite nice.  The Edmeads kid is going to be a star offensively.  And Ranero was running constantly, very aggressive.

The young pitcher, Robert Rose, looked nice.  Nice fastball, very nice curve that looked like he could throw at two different speeds and still locate.  He needs to develop physically, but he has great potential.

In the top of the 7th, MSU has closed on TCNJ and trails only 7-6.

Yup, I've always liked the fact that the most competitive DIII baseball conference plays a double elimination tourney so two teams can meet five times in a season ... before they have to meet for what might be the 6th, 7th or 8th time in the NCAA regional tourney!

The real question is whether Rowan, Kean or Paterson get an NCAA bid in addition to TCNJ and Montclair.

QuoteThe College of NJ 9th - M. Cabalar to p for T. Stringer. Cosgrove singled to right field. Perinotti pinch ran for Cosgrove. Anzelone struck out. Iacono reached on an error by 2b; Perinotti advanced to second. Bruschini singled to left field; Iacono advanced to second; Perinotti advanced to third. Haran homered to left field, 4 RBI; Bruschini scored; Iacono scored, unearned; Perinotti scored. 4 runs, 3 hits, 1 error, 0 LOB.

A walk-off Grand Salami :)

All-Americans Haran and Bullis have now combined for 27 HR's and 135 RBI's while hitting .425 and .404 respectively. The question will be how far can the pitching take them in the NCAA tourney.

And he had a great summer playing for the New Market Rebels in the Valley League wooden baseball league hitting DI pitching without any problems.  He played in the All-Star game, had 10 2 HR games and 1 game where he hit 3 HRs.  I agree he'll be drafted on graduation or someone is not doing their job!!!  He was great with the local youngsters as well.

Who are the best players?

Dave
Are they selling season ticket packages, charging $20 for parking and $7.00 for hot dogs yet at Yogi-town stadium in beautiful Upper Montclair?

TCNJ, Montclair and Kean should be the NJAC front runners this season. I don't think any team in D3 has a hitting combination the likes of Haran (2006 D3 POY) and Bullis (2006 defensive POY). The Lions return almost their entire pitching staff, but also lost some key position players — as Bullis will move from 1B to the OF this season.

I understand it's been a bit "chilly" back in Joisey. I've been watching Rice baseball highlights on the local news every time they play down here. Imagine St. Johns or Seton Hall highlights on CBS or NBC every time they take to the diamond. Houston is one crappy pro sports town!

2007 NJAC Baseball
Preseason Coaches Poll

1. The College of New Jersey (6)
2. Montclair State (2)
3. Kean (1)
4. William Paterson (1)
5. Rowan
6. Rutgers-Camden
7. Rutgers-Newark
8. Richard Stockton (dark horse)
9. Ramapo
10. New Jersey City

Even NJCU won't suck this season.  I think the NJAC will be tougher than usual this season.

Game Recap
Close early, Chapman up due to 3 run HR in the first
Kean got a few hits and chances off of drag, two bases loaded situations = 0 runs
Once Chapman got into the Kean bullpen the floodgates opened.

NJCU'S ROB SUMNER NAMED NJAC AND NJCBA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JERSEY CITY, NJ...New Jersey City University junior centerfielder ROB SUMNER (Union, NJ/Union) had a remarkable, record-setting week for the Gothic Knights, and after batting .560 (14-25) with 14 RBIs, 10 runs, five homeruns and four doubles in six games, he has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Week 4 of the 2007 season and the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III Player of the Week.

For Sumner, who was named First-Team All-NJAC and Second-Team All-Region in 2006, it is the first time in his career that he has been selected the NJAC Player of the Week. It is the second time he has garnered NJCBA Player of the Week accolades, last receiving the distinction on March 14, 2006.

Sumner's award marks the second consecutive week that an NJCU outfielder has won both awards after teammate ANTHONY MACKOW (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) was honored on March 12. It is the first time in the history of the baseball program that the Gothic Knights have received the NJAC and NJCBA Player of the Week distinction in consecutive weeks.

Additionally, it is the first time since the 1999 season that NJCU has received the NJAC Player of the Week twice in the same season (Mark Pappas, Rick Pizzuti). It is also the first time the Knights have ever received the state Player of the Week award from the NJCBA twice in one season.

Sumner, NJCU's leadoff hitter, posted a .621 on-base percentage and a 1.320 slugging percentage at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, FL last week, and extended his hitting streak to 13 games dating back to last season.

He entered the week with four homeruns in two years, yet set NJCU records for homeruns in a week (5) and doubleheader (4), while also blasting a single-game school record three homeruns. He became the third player in NJCU history to score 100 career runs (107), and upped his career batting average to .409 and on-base percentage to .504. He also was 3-for-4 in steals and walked four times, while fielding at a 1.000 rate. He led off two games with homeruns.

He opened NJCU's 3-3 week, by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and a steal in the Knights' 8-2 win over the University of Scranton on March 12. He was 2-for-4 with a run, steal and one RBI in a 10-7 loss to Haverford College on March 13.

In a doubleheader with Illinois College on March 14, he was 1-for-3 with a double, one run and a steal in a 5-2 loss in game one. In led off game two of the twinbill with a homer, finishing 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and a double in the Knights 6-3 victory.

On March 15 in a 21-17 loss to Suffolk University, he led off his second consecutive game with a homerun, finishing 1-for-5 with a run and RBI.

In a 14-7 win over Finlandia University on March 15, Sumner set a single-game school record when he launched three homeruns, going 4-for-5 with seven RBIs, four runs and a double.

Through 10 games this season, Sumner is batting .541 (20-37) with 16 runs, five doubles, five homeruns, one triple and 15 RBIs. He has walked eight times and struck out on only three occasions, while stealing six bases in nine opportunities. He owns an astounding .622 on-base percentage, and a 1.135 slugging rate, with 42 total bases. He is also a perfect 17-for-17 defensively.

Phil....it's going to be interesting to see how this year plays out in the NJAC.  We know Kean, Montclair, TCNJ, and Paterson should be solid again but Ramapo and Stockton both have nice records in early season play.  I don't think Ramapo and Stockton played the type of early season schedule like Montclair and TCNJ played.  It should be another great battle this year!

The frustrating thing is that i won't catch a single NJAC game since I'm residing in Texas now. Usually I'm good for a couple games at Yogi Berra Stadium, Kean and as many TCNJ games as I can. Now I'm just a stat hound!

Kean defeated TCNJ 7-0 in game one.  Joe Augustine through a complete game three hit shutout striking out seven and walking two.  That is one heck of a pitching performance against one of the better hitting teams in the NJAC.

Kean swept TCNJ today winning the nightcap 4-2.  Kean pitching was outstanding today holding TCNJ hitters to just 10-61 (.164).  TCNJ’s Haran and Bullis were just 3-16 (.188).

Kean was led by their leadoff hitter Maikel De La Rosa who went 4-9 (.444) with two runs scored and two RBI’s in today’s doubleheader.  Kean improves to 11-3 (2-1 NJAC) and TCNJ drops to 11-6 (1-2 NJAC).

Besides the games above, here are the remaining finals in the NJAC for today:

Rowan 8, Montclair State 6
Montclair State 9, Rowan 1

William Paterson 13, NJCU 7
NJCU 14, William Paterson 6

Ramapo 12, Rutgers-Camden 2
Ramapo 11, Rutgers-Camden 3

Rutgers-Newark 14, Richard Stockton 2
Richard Stockton 4, Rutgers-Newark 2

Ramapo stays on top of the Conference with a 4-0 record, 17-4 overall.

I have a feeling this is going to be an interesting season in the NJAC.  Early in the season some of the usual league heavyweights are getting knocked off.  Example....NJCU beats Paterson today.

From the NJAC website.  Congrats to the following players of the week:

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Don Reinertsen, William Paterson University
Senior, Outfielder
Swartzwood, NJ/Kittatinny

Reinertsen earns NJAC Player of the Week honors after hitting .667 (16-for-24) with three doubles, two triples, nine RBI and eight runs scored in five games for the Pioneers. He hit safely in all five contests and produced four multiple-hit games including a 4-for-4 performance with a double, triple, and five RBI in Paterson’s 15-1 non-conference win over Old Westbury. In the Pioneers’ 13-7 NJAC road win at NJCU, he was 6-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, a stole base, four RBI and three runs scored. Reinertsen currently leads the NJAC in hitting with a .565 batting average.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Joe Augustine, Kean University
Senior, Right-handed Pitcher
Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park

He opened the week by surrendering just three hits and one run while striking out nine and walking none in Kean’s 11-2 non-conference road win at Drew. He wrapped up the week by tossing a three-hit complete-game shutout while striking out seven and walking just two in the Cougars’ 7-0 NJAC road win at TCNJ. Augustine, who did not surrender an extra-base hit in 15.0 innings, currently ranks second in the NJAC in strikeouts with 40 on the season.

Two days later, he surrendered just four hits and one unearned run while striking out five for a complete-game 9-1 NJAC road win at Rowan. Castano currently is tied for the conference lead in victories with four on the season.

NJAC scores for April 3rd:

Eastern Connecticut 5, Montclair State 4
NJCU 9, John Jay 6
Richard Stockton 9, Drew 3
Rowan 5, Gwynedd-Mercy 3
TCNJ 4, Arcadia 3
William Paterson 26, Staten Island 4

I guess Paterson was a little pissed at the loss at NJCU on Saturday and took it out on Staten Island.

I am headed to New Jersey for the weekend games at NJCU.  I picked a great weekend to travel....highs in Jersey are supposed to be in the low 40's and with the wind off of the bay that should make the wind chill in the 30's.

Is anyone else starting to wonder how many bids the NJAC might get?

Kean is rolling. Can't really see them not getting a bid barring a total collapse.

But after that it gets pretty messy. Ramapo is 20-5, 6-1 but has a pretty tough stretch of games coming up after getting it pretty easy early. TCNJ is 16-7 with some good wins but is in the middle of the pack in the conference. They're probably in pretty good shape though. No one right now has close to a good enough overall record to really be seriously considered no matter how tough their schedule was. Montclair, Rowan and William Paterson are all hovering around .500.

Looking like at the most 3 bids unless someone else turns on the jets in a big way.
Title: Re: New Jersey Athletic Conference
Post by: Lefty on April 08, 2007, 10:18:32 PM
I think Kean and TCNJ will be get in....both teams are playing well.  I see Ramapo getting a bid unless they completely fall apart down the stretch.

As far as a fourth bid I think we will see what Montclair has this week.  They have a tough week ahead of them playing at DeSales on Tuesday, at Kean on Thursday, home against Ramapo on Friday, and a doubleheader at home against TCNJ on Saturday.  They need to make a move this week against quality opponents.

I think Paterson is just about done.  Getting swept by RU Newark this weekend and losing last weekend at NJCU really hurts their chances.

As for Rowan....they need to begin to turn it on now.  They still have a chance but they need wins just like Montclair.

There are some great match-ups in the NJAC this week....I can't wait to see how this plays out.

From the NJAC website.  Congrats to the following players of the week:

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bill Mercurio, Rutgers-Newark
Senior, First Baseman
Wappinger Falls, NY/Arlington

Mercurio earns NJAC Player of the Week honors after hitting .533 (8-for-15) with four doubles, one home run, six RBI and eight runs scored in three conference contests during the week for the Scarlet Raiders. He produced multiple-hit games in all three contests including a 2-for-4 performance with two doubles and one run scored in Newark's 10-3 loss to Kean. In the Raiders' 27-3 game one victory over William Paterson, he went 3-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and four runs scored. In the nightcap, he went 3-for-5 with three runs scored as Newark completed the sweep with a 9-7 game two victory. Mercurio currently ranks second in the NJAC in doubles with nine on the season.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Bob Buskett, The College of New Jersey
Junior, Left-handed Pitcher
Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame

Buskett becomes the second different Lion to earn NJAC Pitcher of the Week honors after collecting a pair of victories on the mound for TCNJ. He first surrendered just three hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work while striking out three in TCNJ's 8-2 non-conference win over Johns Hopkins. He wrapped up the week by surrendering six hits and one earned run while striking out seven and walking none in eight innings of work during the Lions' 12-1 NJAC road victory at NJCU. Buskett currently ranks tied for 11th in the NJAC in total games started (5).

Yeswita earns NJAC Rookie of the Week honors after hitting .467 (7-for-15) with two doubles, a home run, three RBI and six runs scored in three conference contests for Rutgers-Newark. Ramapo is looking real solid in the conference.  They play a doubleheader at TCNJ this Saturday and at home against Kean on April 26th.  Besides those games the remaining schedule is very soft and winnable games.  I still think they are going to get into the NCAA's....barring a total collapse.

By the way....all NJAC games were cancelled today because of the huge rain storm in the Northeast.

Yeah it looks more and more like Ramapo is going to be there. And Montclair is going to have to win the tournament or catch some kind of on fire really soon for there to be a 4th.
Title: Re: New Jersey Athletic Conference
Post by: Lefty on April 16, 2007, 09:28:24 PM
I personally think Montclair is done.  The team that might sneak up and take the fourth bid is Stockton.  They have a tough schedule with TCNJ and Kean (DH) ahead but they are 18-8-1 overall and 6-4 in the conference.  I would think they need to finish strong and win a couple of games in the tournament.

Title: Re: New Jersey Athletic Conference
Post by: Spence on April 16, 2007, 10:53:51 PM
Do you think Stockton has the non-conference schedule to do it? Obviously if they take 3 out of 4 or something from Kean and TCNJ things might look a little different, but they really haven't beaten too many good teams so far.
Title: Re: New Jersey Athletic Conference
Post by: Lefty on April 17, 2007, 08:11:33 AM
You are correct about the soft Stockton schedule.  They only have a few good non-conference wins.  They split with Plattsburgh St back in early March and a sweep of Ursinus in late March.  I think they need to go 6-2 in their last eight games (2-1 against Kean and TCNJ).....not an easy thing to do.  They also might need to win a game or two in the Conference playoffs.

I am going to try to make my best guess on this weekends final regular season games and what teams need to make the playoffs and my final standings.  This is just for fun and don't hold this against me....I am just trying to give an outlook on the upcoming weekend.

This is based on current standings.

Kean: 11-3 in the conference and 24-6 overall
Upcoming games - @ Ramapo, @ NJCU, and a DH @ RU-Camden
My take – Needs to get by Ramapo and then faces the bottom two teams in the conference.  I think they do that and they and are my regular season champs.

TCNJ: 11-3 in the conference and 24-8 overall
Upcoming games – vs. William Paterson, and a DH @ RU-Newark
My take – Should beat William Paterson but not an easy doubleheader @ RU-Newark.  I think TCNJ is peaking at the right time and they take the sweep.  They are my second place team.

Ramapo: 11-3 in the conference and 27-8 overall
Upcoming games – vs. Kean, and a DH @ William Paterson
My take – Outstanding season for a team that was selected 9th in the preseason coaches poll.  I think they come up short against Kean but sweeps Paterson to take 3rd place in the conference.

Montclair State: 9-5 in the conference and 17-14 overall
Upcoming games – vs. NJCU, vs. RU-Newark, and a DH @ Stockton
My take – I wrote this team off about two weeks ago and then they come back and make a nice little run.  I think they get by NJCU and RU-Newark and will probably split with Stockton and claim the 4th place.

Richard Stockton: 7-7-1 in the conference and 19-11-1 overall
Upcoming games - @ Rowan, and a DH vs. Montclair St.
My take – In a fight for one of the last two spots for the conference playoffs.  I see them losing to a suddenly hot Rowan and split with Montclair St. but it is still enough to make the playoffs.

Rowan: 7-7 in the conference and 17-14 overall
Upcoming games – vs. Richard Stockton, and a DH vs. NJCU
My take – I see them getting by Stockton and sweep NJCU to jump into 5th place.  The Stockton game is huge and the experience should get them the win.

RU-Newark: 7-8 in the conference and 11-22 overall
Upcoming games - @ Montclair St., and a DH @ TCNJ
My take – What a final three games to have on the schedule.  Montclair and TCNJ need wins to solidify their spot in the playoffs and RU-Newark is just trying to stay alive.  I think there lack of pitching gets them swept this week.

William Paterson: 3-10-1 in the conference and 15-14-2 overall
Upcoming games - @ TCNJ, @ RU-Camden, and a DH vs. Ramapo
My take – What a disappointing season for the Pioneers.  They are technically still alive in the playoff race but they have to sweep TCNJ and Ramapo....I don't think so!

NJCU: 3-11 in the conference and 14-18 overall
Upcoming games - @ Montclair St., vs. Kean, and a DH @ Rowan
My take – NCJU brought in some nice additions to the roster this year but it still wasn't enough to move them up the standings.  They are still in the playoff hunt but that should end with a loss at Montclair on Thursday.  They could be a spoiler at Rowan on Saturday.

**eliminated from the playoff race**
RU-Camden: 2-12 in the conference and 13-20 overall
Upcoming games – vs. Rowan, vs. William Paterson, and a DH @ Kean
My take – Eliminated and get swept this week.  If Kean falls asleep on Saturday they could sneak out a win but I doubt it.

My prediction for final standings:

Kean 15-3
TCNJ 14-4
Ramapo 13-5
Montclair 12-6
Rowan 10-7
Stockton 8-9-1

RU-Newark 7-11
W. Paterson 4-13-1
NJCU 3-15
RU-Camden 2-16

The top six make the playoffs that begin May 3rd.

With all that being said....hopefully I am close in my predictions.  Feel free to give my your opinions.

Hopkins looked like a good ball club...can they give serious competition in the region?

I haven't seen them play this year but they did go 6-2 against the NJAC.  Five of those six wins came against some of the weaker teams in the NJAC (RU-Camden, RU-Newark, William Paterson) and their two losses came against TCNJ....one of the best in the conference.  They should get a good seed (#2, 3,or 4) in the regional and could do some damage early.  Who knows once they meet up with Kean and TCNJ.

This is about where they usually are in their up years, tucked right behind the top teams in the NJAC. Can they break through? I think I picked them to do so this year, but Kean's top two are looking really good pitching-wise. However, if they met in regionals it most likely wouldn't be until the 3rd game. But if Kean is the 1 seed that would be the 2nd game for them.

Lot of buts.

TCNJ 9, William Paterson 1

NJAC scores for 4-28:

Montclair State 12, Richard Stockton 10
Richard Stockton 5, Montclair State 4
William Paterson 22, Ramapo 1
William Paterson 12, Ramapo 5
TCNJ 4, Rutgers-Newark 1
TCNJ 11, Rutgers-Newark 5

What got into William Paterson??  Ramapo might have played themselves out of a Pool C bid.  I think they need at least one win in the NJAC playoffs, maybe two, to secure the Pool C bid.

NJAC scores for 4-29:

Kean 5, Rutgers-Camden 4
Kean 8, Rutgers-Camden 7
Rowan 5, NJCU 4
Rowan 5, NJCU 3

With the Rowan sweep of NJCU today the six playoff teams are set.  Kean, TCNJ, Montclair St., Ramapo, Rowan, and Richard Stockton have qualified for the tournament.  There are still three games on Monday that will effect the seedings.

Here are the final standings for the six playoff teams:

Kean 15-3
TCNJ 14-4
Montclair 12-6
Ramapo 11-7
Rowan 10-8
Stockton 9-8-1

My predictions below were pretty close.  Ramapo was my only big mistake....getting swept by Paterson in the final weekend of the season is not the best way to go into the playoffs.  They better win a couple of games in the playoffs if the want a Pool C bid.

A very intriguing first round game is Rowan at TCNJ.

Kean 15-3
TCNJ 14-4

W. Paterson 4-13-1
NJCU 3-15
RU-Camden 2-16

From The NJAC website:

Players of the Week for week ending 4-29-07

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jeff Toth, The College of New Jersey
Junior, Shortstop
Parlin, NJ/Sayreville Memorial

Toth becomes the second consecutive Lion to earn NJAC Player of the Week honors after hitting .522 (12-for-23) with one double, one triple, two home runs, five stolen bases, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored in a 5-0 week of play for TCNJ. He produced multiple-hits in all five contests including a 4-for-5 performance with a double, home run, three RBI, and three runs scored in the Lions' 11-0 non-conference win over Widener. In a 4-1 and 11-5 NJAC doubleheader sweep of Rutgers-Newark, he went a combined 4-for-9 with three stolen bases, four RBI, and three runs scored. Toth currently ranks third in the NJAC in total bases with 88 on the season.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Joe Augustine, Kean University
Senior, Right-handed Pitcher
Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park

Augustine earns NJAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time this season after earning the win on the mound in the Cougars' 10-1 NJAC road win at Ramapo. The right-hander surrendered just four hits and one unearned run in a complete game victory to improve to 6-2 overall on the season. In the win, he struck out nine and walked just one for his fourth NJAC victory of the year. Augustine currently leads the NJAC in total innings pitched with 66.0 on the season.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Mike Guadango, William Paterson University
Freshman, Outfielder
Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands

Guadango earns NJAC Rookie honors for the third time this season and the second consecutive week after hitting .500 (9-for-18) with a double, a home run, nine RBI and eight runs scored in a 3-2 week for the Pioneers. He hit safely in 4-of-5 contests and produced multiple-hit games three times including a 3-for-4 performance with a stolen base, one RBI, and three runs scored in an 11-1 non-conference win over Manhattanville. In the Pioneers' 22-1 game one NJAC victory over Ramapo, he was 3-for-3 with a home run, six RBI and four runs scored. Guadango currently ranks tied for third in the NJAC in hits with 56 on the season.

ROOKIE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Sean Stewart, The College of New Jersey
Freshman, Right-handed Pitcher
Howell, NJ/Freehold Township

Stewart earns NJAC Rookie Pitcher honors after garnering the victory on the mound in the Lions' 11-0 non-conference victory over Widener. In his first career start and just the third appearance of his collegiate career, he surrendered two hits and no runs in six innings of work. He struck out nine and walked none while recording the first win of his collegiate career. On the season, Stewart is 1-0 with 14 strikeouts in 11.0 innings pitched.

Yes, I do think we will see Zeffiro today against TCNJ.  He has not pitched against TCNJ this year and that is a huge advantage.  In the regular season Kean threw Cupido and Augustine against TCNJ.  If they get by TCNJ today they can always come back with Augustine on three days rest.

WOW....how about the 11th inning in the Kean/TCNJ game.

Kean University 11th - P. Schatzow singled. C. Carrano pinch hit for M. Shymanski. P. Schatzow stole second. C. Carrano walked. K. O'Neill popped up to 3b, bunt. R. Clark singled to right field, advanced to second, RBI; C. Carrano advanced to second, advanced to third on an error by 1b; P. Schatzow scored. M. DeLaRosa intentionally walked. J. D'Andrea reached on a fielder's choice; M. DeLaRosa advanced to second; R. Clark advanced to third; C. Carrano out at home 1b to c. Mattonelli flied out to cf. 1 run, 2 hits, 1 error, 3 LOB.

The College of NJ 11th - Toth tripled to right field. Bullis tripled to center field, RBI; Toth scored. Haran intentionally walked. Cosgrove intentionally walked; Haran advanced to second. Zonies reached on a fielder's choice; Cosgrove advanced to second; Haran advanced to third; Bullis out at home 2b to c. B. Kropp pinch hit for Hall. B. Kropp struck out looking. Haran out at third c to 3b, caught stealing. 1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 2 LOB.

TCNJ gets the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the 11th and can't score the winning run.....two great teams playing their hearts out.

...and TCNJ wins it in the bottom of the 12th. It would have been tough for TCNJ to have to play at 6:00 today after the length of the Montclair game last night and the early Kean game this morning. Not to mention the twelve innings it took to beat Kean.

Now at least I can go get some yard work done down here in Houston! It would be nice to have something other than live stats so I'm not sitting here staring vacantly into my computer screen while my daughter is asking to play video games on Nick jr.

BTW, I could see the Ramapo collapse coming 1450 miles away. Lackluster pitching and an easy early shedule didn't quite prepare them for the stretch run in the NJAC race. A 1-7 record against Kean TCNJ and Montclair says it all. Still, a surprising year for both Ramapo and Stockton ... and on the negative side, Paterson.

NJAC Championship

My one and only update for the day....I have to head out for a sales meeting (who scheduled that??):

Starting pitchers
Cupido for Kean
Kittle for TCNJ

After 2 innings
TCNJ - 1
Kean - 1

If Kean manages to win game 1 then my "guess" is we will see Augustine (1.92 ERA) against Ortiz (1.93 ERA).....and that is a great match-up.

...Bullis 2-run homer in the 8th tied it. How a two-time All-American only warrants an Honorable Mention All-NJAC spot as a senior is beyond me.

Third NJAC baseball championship in a row for TCNJ. In the history of the NJAC, only Montclair and Paterson have three-peated. It was fun following this while at work down here in Texas!
Title: Re: New Jersey Athletic Conference

Why was Bullis only Honorable Mention?  His 2 All American Years mean nothing for this, it is not a life time achievement award to be on the All Conference Team.  I was actually surprised he even made Honorable Mention.  Blake Bullis hit .263 during conference play this year with just 2 doubles and 1 home run.  Those are not impressive #'s.  And by looking at the entire All Conference selections i began to wonder if Rick Dell puts in to much effort getting his players nominated.

Case in point,  how does Bob Buskett make HM while Gary Winkler from Rowan gets nothing?  Winkler had a 0.87 era in 31 conference innings.  Buscket 1.78 in 30 innings.  It absoutly blows my mind how Winkler is not on any of these teams.  Or how Jairo Mendez from MSU is HM with a 0.70 era in 38.2 conference innings and Mike Oliver from TCNJ gets 1st team with a 1.78 era in 30 innings against the likes of NCJU and others.

Even more proof that this All Conference team is completly rigged is how Maikel De La Rosa from Kean makes 2nd team with a .238 conference batting average.  What a joke  and also Mike Shymanski on 2nd team when he batted .260 all year.  ( i cant find his conference BA, but i cant imagine its very high).

It was my understanding that the All conference teams were picked only from Conference stats and if that remains the case these teams are a complete and utter disgrace.
Title: Re: New Jersey Athletic Conference
Post by: d3baseball07 on May 08, 2007, 10:21:28 AM
*Correction*

Updated stats.  Maikel De La Rosa finished .254 in conference play and Shymanski .286 with 1 double, 0 triples and 0 Home runs.   That is 2nd team all conference?  Some very strange selections this year.
Title: Re: New Jersey Athletic Conference
Post by: phil on May 09, 2007, 12:07:56 AM
I've seen enough of these selections (both good and bad) in the past to believe that there is a "Lifetime Acheivement Award" aspect to the picks — especially for Seniors.

Mendez beat Kean, Newark and NJCU in his three NJAC starts and you want to complain about which teams Oliver faced? Winkler's only win during the entire NJAC season was against Newark. And what about Ortiz? It's not all ERA.

As far as Bullis is concerned... if it truly is based on just the NJAC season then you have your point. But TCNJ won their third straight NJAC title despite the obvious priorites Dell must have placed on the All-NJAC selections — as Bullis went 10-22 with 2 HRs — 6 runs — 8 RBIs and 5 stolen bases in five NJAC playoff games against some "decent" competition. Not to mention the fact that he's one of the best gloves in DIII. So I doubt that he's losing sleep over the NJAC snub.

Shame Montclair couldn't be more consistent this year. They've got some good wins.

As for my thoughts on the Mid-Atlantic, it sort of depends on who gets moved in. The committee has shown more willingness to shuffle the deck to try to balance the regions, and in the Mid-Atlantic there are a LOT of options for shuffling. South, New York, New England, even Mideast.

On balance, Kean and TCNJ are going to be tough to beat. Best hope might be to play TCNJ in round 2 and upset them, then go against Kean's #3, who is still not bad. But their top two are really tough. That's assuming they're both in Boyertown or wherever it ends up being.

I was an athlete at NJCU and worked for Larry Schiner at NJCU.  He truly respected and cared for the well being of each student athlete.  After my years at NJCU we have stayed in touch, and whenever I attend a NJCU event he comes over and talks to me.  He will be missed by many.  I wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.

The College of New Jersey's baseball player, senior catcher Gerard Haran has signed with St. George RoadRunners of the Golden Baseball League.

Haran was tapped for the 2007 ABCA All-America First Team this past season, marking his third straight honor as a first team pick. Last season, Haran was named the 2006 ABCA NCAA Division III National Player of the Year at catcher. In addition to his honors this season, he was named to the 2007 ABCA Mid-Atlantic Regional First Team after also earning 2007 All-State First Team honors from the NJCBA at catcher after another impressive season. Also named the NJAC's Player of the Year in both 2006 and 2007, he finished his 2007 season with a .327 average, while leading the Lions with his 53 RBI's, 13 doubles, 14 homeruns and .661 slugging percentage. On his career, he added his name to the record book having broken the marks for most doubles (58), most home runs (49), most RBI's (215), and most runs scored (184), while ranking No. 2 in games played (166), and third with 226 hits. He leaves TCNJ having become the program's first and only three-time baseball All-American.

The Golden Baseball League, presented by Safeway, Inc., is dedicated to bringing professional independent baseball back to California, Nevada and Arizona. Within five to seven years, the Golden Baseball League will establish a 10-12 team league of minor league baseball teams throughout California, Southern Oregon, Western Arizona, and Northern Mexico.

The League will play in a combination of City and University owned stadiums and work collaboratively to market professional baseball in each of its communities.

Spence,
Both Trenton papers chimed in on that topic and the Trentonian printed this list of possible successors:
Bill Dearden, Dean Glus and Ed Yaris are the assistants at CNJ and all are very qualified to succeed, and then there is some other local baseball talent that might be interested in the position.

Jim Maher, who guided Hamilton High to a state championship, is currently on the staff at Rider, so he brings some college credentials.

Rick Freeman, the longtime and highly successful Post 31 manager, is currently on the staff at Rutgers.

Or could Chris Pittaro wish to follow in his father's footsteps and move from the scout's chair to the bench?
(LOL, this former Trenton native is a former MLB 2nd baseman and current Oakland Athletics National Field Coordinator)

Would Rich Giallella be interested in getting back into coaching? (Steinert HS Director of Athletics, Rider College Hall of Fame)

Both Trenton publications mentioned Rutgers assistant Freeman as a possibility. Of the TCNJ assistants, Glus might have a bit of an edge, with international experience with MLB in Asia and other coaching stints in Estonia and Puerto Rico. Plus he's a recruiter.

Now TCNJ has an interim athletic director and head coaching positions to fill for basketball and baseball. It's been a long, long time since TCNJ has seen changes this dramatic in the athletic department.

It's almost better IMO for TCNJ to have an interim AD that knows the program than a brand new full-time guy just getting his feet wet and maybe thinking he needs to make a big splash.

Castaldo is a TCNJ/Trenton guy through and through, and I expect him to make a very good choice from a strong local/regional pool of candidates.

From the William Paterson Website:

Mike Lauterhahn Named Baseball Head Coach

WAYNE , N.J. – Former William Paterson standout Mike Lauterhahn has been named the Pioneers' new head baseball coach, the University announced Aug. 15. Lauterhahn will assume his new duties on Aug. 27.

Most recently, Lauterhahn has served as the varsity head coach at Rutherford High School (2001-07), leading the Bulldogs to a 129-55-1 record during his seven seasons, the 2004 and 2005 Group 2 state titles, Group 2 runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2003, and the Bergen County Scholastic League's (BCSL) American Division crowns in 2001 and 2003. The 2005 Bergen County, BCSL-American and northjerseysports.com Coach of the Year, Lauterhahn has sent more than 20 of his former student-athletes on to play in the college ranks, and mentored three more who signed contracts with Major League Baseball clubs.

"Mike Lauterhahn brings with him a wealth of experience at all levels of competitive baseball," said Arnold Speert, William Paterson University President. "His experience and his familiarity with William Paterson University, our mission and New Jersey high school talent position him to successfully lead the Pioneers for years to come."

Lauterhahn will succeed his former coach, Jeff Albies, who led William Paterson to an 862-401-15 record and two national championships (1992, 1996) during his 33 years at the helm. Lauterhahn's connection to the Pioneer program stretches back more than a quarter century, as his father, Bob, just completed his 27 th season as an assistant coach, and his brother, Dan (1995-97), was an all-American at the school and a 1997 draft selection of the Detroit Tigers.

"Mike is an outstanding individual who possesses an excellent work ethic, passion for the game and a life-long commitment to the Pioneer baseball program," William Paterson Director of Athletics Sabrina Grant said. "He will serve as a great role model for our student-athletes, and we look forward to the continued success of our baseball program under Mike's leadership."

A member of the New Jersey State Baseball Coaches Association Executive Committee and the Northeast's coach at the 2004-06 Senior State All-Star Games, Lauterhahn has worked as a William Paterson assistant coach during the fall season since 2000, and as a staff member for the Joe Wladyka Camps since 2001. He has taught history at Rutherford High School since 2004, and previously served as a social studies teacher at Wallington Junior/Senior High School (2001-2004) and as a fifth-grade teacher at Frank W. Gavlak School in Wallington (1996-2001).

"I am extremely excited to have this opportunity to return to William Paterson as the head baseball coach," Lauterhahn said. "Based on what Coach Albies accomplished during his 33 seasons and the tradition of excellence he established, I could not ask for a better situation. The tradition associated with William Paterson baseball is very important, not just for me personally, but for my extended family as well. I grew up in the program, and it is extremely important to me that we maintain that connection to our past, as well as work hard to take the program to the next level nationally. Reaching those goals will be my responsibility, and I am anxious and excited to get started."

An all-New Jersey Athletic Conference outfielder for the Pioneers after transferring from Rutgers-Newark, Lauterhahn helped lead William Paterson to a 56-24 two-year record (1993-94), the 1993 NJAC title and a berth in that year's NCAA Tournament. Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1994, he spent two years in the Cubs' farm system before returning to William Paterson to finish his studies. Lauterhahn currently stands tied for eighth in hit by pitches (14) and tied for 10 th in triples (nine) on the William Paterson career charts, and tied for second in hit by pitches (12, 1993), tied for third in triples (eight, 1993) and tied for seventh in runs scored (55, 1993) on the single-season lists. In addition to his exploits as a member of the William Paterson baseball team, Lauterhahn also was a two-year starting guard for the Pioneer basketball team (1992-93, 1993-94), and his 15 assists against Richard Stockton (2/20/93) remain tied for the best single-game total in program history.

A 1997 graduate of William Paterson with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and history, Lauterhahn resides in Carlstadt with his wife, Lucia, and their 20-month old son, Sean. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of his alma mater, Wallington High School, after earning all-area, all-conference and all-county honors in basketball, and all-conference laurels in baseball.

Yeah, Montclair is soooo over rated every year. Thirty-nine trips to the regional tourney, thirteen trips to the College World Series (3 of the last 7 years), and three national championships worth of over rated! Until last season, Rowan was in five consecutive regional tournaments with two College World Series appearances. They also happen to return their entire starting pitching rotation this year.

Do you think Ramapo's a sleeper? They finished near the bottom of the NJAC in fielding percentage and pitching – giving up almost twice the runs / game that Kean did. They also had a pretty weak early season schedule (four games against Apprentice?), before playing close to .500 ball the last 20 games — NJAC games! How do you see them above Kean, TCNJ, Rowan, or Montclair?

I can buy Stockton as a sleeper. They return their pitchers (who unlike Ramapo, were not bad last year). But how can you rate them higher than fifth when Stockton advanced to the NJAC playoffs for the first time in school history in '07 and promptly went 0-2?

C'mon blipp50, I know you're a Ramapo fan, but at least show me some facts behind your silly statement — and some knowledge of NJAC history (recent will do) while you're at it.

Post by: baseball1001 on April 18, 2008, 10:24:38 PM
This afternoon Montclair's head coach Norm Schoenig won his 600th career game over long time rival William Patterson University. Both of these programs have a vast history, and today, Montclair honored recently retired head Coach Jeff Albies. It is nice to see that two teams who have such a rivalry, can still show respect to one another. Montclair in honor of coach Albies today held Jeff Albies day at their stadium with a small ceremony during the 5th inning. Both of these coaches have done a lot for division III baseball and their players. I just wanted to recognize and say congrats to Coach Schoenig on his achievement. Hopefully there are many more to come.

I ask you to please not be overly naive about the strength of the njac this year. I think everyone knows it is not as strong as it has been in years past, not discounting that it is still a very good league. A lot of teams are having down years, regardless of how competitive the top of the league is. Just because its competitive doesnt change the fact that montclair is leading the conference and already has 11 losses, and i believe like 5 in a row at one point. TCNJ is having a great year, but even teams such as rowan, who everyone expected to be a sleeper, has lost a lot of games. Even Kean i would say is a little overrated this year, really reaping the benefits of a championship last year, despite THIS year's rankings being exactly that.....THIS years rankings. So i agree there maybe should be a little more on the njac, but i dont think Jim should make a whole page for the njac or anything, bowing down and worshiping it, just because it has had some good years in the past.

There is a board for the NJAC, just like all the other conferences. That's where conference specific topics should be discussed. I think the coverage is balanced but maybe weighted early towards western and southern teams because in February there's nothing else.

Mr. Dixon...As an avid NJAC fan and supporter I was wondering why this website does not do more coverage on arguably the best conference in division three baseball?  Any explanations??

First:  This is a national site and I try to cover all teams/conferences equally.

Second:  Those teams that promote themselves get better exposure.  I would  like no more than highlight every team.  When sitting down to find a number of games to recap, it is difficult to search every web site for the best 6-8 games of the day.  Therefore any team that allows me to find a recap more easily will be highlighted more often.

The only thing I track is the photos on the front page.  Looking back over the year over 90 different schools have had at least one photo posted (my goal is all 300+ schools but that is a tall order).  Next year I will track stories.

Then again this not the forum (national topics) to discuss this.

Moderator's note:  Merged to the NJAC board for further discussion.

Jose Fulgencio got front page coverage last week for his Faces-in-the-Crowd SI appearance.

Additional point.  The NJAC SID's are encourged to send press releases for posting.  Of the ten NJAC members, I count the number of press releases from the participating programs that have been sent to D3baseball.com as 0, 0, 0, 0, 4 and 5 from 6 of the 10 schools.

Finally, the number of teams who are making news in mid- to late May is dramatically less, and frequently includes NJAC schools.  Facetiously speaking, I am certain that I speak for all of D-III, in that we will gladly accept the voluntary cessation of any baseball activity from any NJAC school after May 15th of any year  in perpetuity.    ;)

Pat Coleman has frequently mentioned that he doesn't necessarily need to load up on Mount Union stories in D3Football.com in mid-October.  There will likely be plenty of Mount Union football material for D3Football.com in December.  Any "man bites dog" stories (i.e., Mount Union losses) any sooner will be given front page coverage.  :D

Thank-you. I imagine with all the D-3 schools it is certainly hard to cover every game. The website does a great job hands down.

D3baseballnut:

I think the NJAC teams are as strong as years past, but the amount of dominate pitchers may not be what it used to be. If you look over Kean, TCNJ, Rowan, and Montclair's schedules they all have quality wins over ranked opponents. And as for Montclair starting off 1-5 with those 5 straight, they are 18-6 since then. I will post this in the NJAC section, as to get it out of the National Topic forum. Sorry for the post in the wrong area.

d3baseballnut,
Since you're a Hopkins fan, perhaps this is the year which they finally survive a regional with the NJAC. If that should happen then everyone on the NJAC board can point out that the Jays finally won a regional in a down year for the NJAC!

I also like how you pointed out that TCNJ is having such a fantastic year so you can either crow about a win or brush off a loss when the Lions take on Johns Hopkins today. We'll see what happens when TCNJ has a committee of pitchers take the mound after playing 5 NJAC games in four days.

Montclair has lost their share of games, but when you're 5-5 against the d3baseball top 25 you're not exactly an easy "W" either.

Best of luck to your squad the rest of the year. Hopefully you'll take it easy on the poor NJAC come playoff time.

TCNJ @ Johns Hopkins has been postponed due to rain.  They have rescheduled it for next Monday the 28th.  With that being two days after the Kean doubleheader and right before the NJAC playoffs I highly doubt TCNJ will throw their top pitchers in Baltimore.

MSU will play Hopkins tomorrow night. The past few years Montclair has been beaten badly, but they usually throw 9 pitchers in 9 innings. They have the final weekend of conference play coming up, and their schedule the past two weeks has been six games tues-sat, with a double header sat. Def tough on the staff, shows in the numbers. Hopkins certainly has a great team this year, and MSU has been playing well as of late, so hopefully we will see a good game.

Montclair's loss to WP today creates a four way tie for first with 3 games to go. Three of those teams (Kean, Rowan, and TCNJ) ranked in the region top 6. The playoffs will mean the world this year, I think.

Three way tie going into the final double headers tomorrow. Kean, TCNJ, Montclair. Rowan one game back. Kean/TCNJ meet tomorrow and Montclair/Rowan meet as well. Gonna be some good stuff. All four teams are ranked regionally. 1 TCNJ, 3 Rowan, 4 Montclair, 6 Kean. NJAC regular season Champion up for grabs. If Kean, TCNJ, or Montclair sweep they are guaranteed at least a tie for first. Tourny time next week. Cant wait. Good luck to all.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead.
Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw,

Title: Rowan Transfer
Post by: JPS93 on July 10, 2008, 12:34:54 PM
Baseball transfer coming in next season according to THIS (http://bulletin.gmnews.com/news/2008/0612/sports/035.html) article.

"Jordan Marsch, who is headed to Rowan University this fall after two fine seasons at Brookdale Community College."

Marsch, a 6'2" 190 lb outfielder from Brick Township High School, hit a team-high .423 (8th League) in 2007 for a team that went 40-10 with a first-place 14-2 GSAC record. The team advanced to the Junior College World Series for the third time in a row and the 11th time in the school's history. The Jersey Blues finished fourth in the World Series in Tyler, Texas. The sophomore class finished with a two year combined record of 82-20 and back to back Conference and Region Championships.

Looks like a good get.

I would not be surprised if these off season problems effects their early season games.

I housed a summer league baseball player who got caught drinking as a minor.  The whole incident ended out helping him on the field as he was pressing at the plate, trying too hard and once his mind had something else to worry about, he started performing.

Pretty impressive performance by Ramapo coming down to VA and defeating nationally ranked Lynchburg College today.  I was very impressed with their fundamentals and of their approach to the game.

I read Kean has a D2 transfer from Tampa who performed well in the ACBL last summer as well as pitching transfers from LIU and Keystone or NJCU.

Just some thoughts to the NJAC season this year. IMHO there are a group of teams that could make some noise. Willy P, Ramapo, Kean, Rowan, Montclair and watch out for TCNJ. A good week for Montclair knowing off Top 25's E.Conn, taking (2) from Ramapo and spliting with Kean this weekend (losing by (1) in the opener and spanking them in the second). Too bad from the looks of things (2) may go to the dance and (3) will be disappointed. Life in the NJAC. I think Montclair has Keystone tomorrow. Should be interesting. ;)

Montclair - ??  Wow - what is the situation?  I feel bad for Norm Shonig - With the forfiets does that send a ripple effect throughout D3 baseball? do the forfeits change to wins for the opponents?  What does this do to OWP and OOWP? - Is this real? - Does anyone know the effect?

Baseball Eliminated from NJAC Tournament By Vote of Conference Administrators
Does this only affect games the Student athlete played in? - How can the initial ifo say the kid is OK and then later say no. - WHO'S FAULT IS THIS?

The student-athlete had been declared eligible based upon appropriate documentation received by the University from prior academic institutions. Recently new information was presented that upon further investigation revealed that the student-athlete was, in fact, ineligible.

How is this montclairs fault?  WOW  Unreal.

Thoughts?

Sounds like he was cleared but the school hadn't done enough research to find out if he actually was. All schools have compliance directors whose sole job is to manage these situations. If they did their work that is too bad that they were given the wrong information from the other school involved. If that info was good then shame on them for running the year for not only this kid but fellow seniors who now will go out without the chance to play in the post season.

On another note what did they do with the tourney. Why would they give the #5 a bye and not add another team or give that bye to Kean

Agreed that they self reported, but why wait till the NJAC tournament. They were finailly ranked #25 / #23 respectfully and then the roof fell in. Can't compare the Baseball team to Teddy and the boys, and Giancola took care of business when he had to. Something just does not add up.

Agree completely. Unfortunately as we know from the evening news and daily papers (to the extent they still exist and are read) the negative stories create the interest. I have always wondered why a conference with such good baseball and passionate followers was not discussed more on this board. Must be a Jersey thing.

Because there is so much else going on around NJ that D3 sports are not really that well attended except for parents, students and some very passionate fans.  Besides it's fishing season around here.

NJCU's victory in the first game of the DH was the first victory of an NJCU squad over a #1 opponent.

JD - Thank you for sharing the link. I'll read through to get a better sense of the other midatlantic teams. The preview is on point regarding Rowan. What's interesting is that arguably their best players this season have been Matt Woods and Mitch Walker. Both leading the team in hits and slugging.  Two powerful transfers who joined an already powerful lineup.

The team did lose some interesting prospects including a freshman contributor from last season, Justin Provost. Not sure where he ended up.

I think Matt Woods is the hottest hitter in D3 since March 30! He has posted incredible numbers (.508, 18 extra base hits, 26 RBIs.0 in that 13 game span. I'm hoping he's on a scout's radar.

GS   AB   R   H   RBI   2B   3B   HR   BB   IBB   SB   SBA   CS   HBP   SH   SF   GDP   K   AVG

13   59  21  30    26    9    1    8    6     0    4     5    1     1    0    0     0   5  .508

Above all... Rowan is 12-1 in that span.

The Profs finished their regular season and await the pending NJAC tourney. Matt Woods continued his torrid pace and finished the season with 12 homers. At the moment, he's the NJAC leader in most major batting categories.

29 - 8 (.784) total season
14 - 4 (.778) conference

Rowan Opens Season with 1-0 Win Over Stevens

Baseball is back in Glassboro!

Senior Drew Ryback threw five scoreless innings as the #24 Rowan baseball team opened the 2020 season with a 1-0 win over Stevens Tech.

Senior second baseman Alex Kokos went 1-for-3 in the contest while Trip McCaffrey was 1-for-2 at the plate in his Rowan debut.

The Profs got their lone run in the fourth when McCaffrey walked, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jared Marks, moved to third on a passed ball and eventually scored on a wild pitch by Stevens' starter Chandler Brierley.

Ryan Mostrangeli saved a run for Rowan at the top of that inning, when he threw out Thomas Paulich at the plate, as he tried to score from second on a hit by Tom James.

Your 2020 Profs:

3B Ryan McIsaac........ Big-bat transfer from the community college ranks, the Profs have had tremendous success recruiting from the talent-rich community ranks in NJ, and McIsaac appears to be the next big-bat to join the list.
RF Jason Bobiak....... A promising freshman last season from HS baseball powerhouse Gloucester Catholic, Bobiak will finally get the chance will show his potential in the line-up on a daily basis
2B Alex Kokos.......... Captain Kokos has been a force at Rowan since he stepped on campus, the Profs will have a seasoned leader on the field in Kokos who has been a starter almost in ever game of his career
1B Mitch Walker....... Walker had a phenomenal junior season after joining from the community ranks. He will be a leader on the field and one of the most dangerous hitters in the NJAC this season.
DH Michael Manganella..
LF Ryan Mostrangeli....Another transfer from the community college ranks and starts immediately in the outfield. Interesting to see how he adapts to the NJAC schedule.
PH Eric DiDomenico.....
LF Brian Hoversen..... Promising freshman who may see playing time early in his college career.
CF Trip McCaffrey..... Transferred to Rowan after two seasons at UMass-Lowell. Hopefully a change of scenery will help McCaffrey show-case his potential.
C. Jared Marks......... Marks will get first crack at the catcher position
SS Nick Schooley...... Schooley has big shoes to fill at the SS position but he brings sufficient experience to the plate to provide leadership at this critical position for the Profs.

02/24/2020 | Rowan Baseball Update

Per Rowan Athletics : Former Rowan standout Andrew DiPiazza has signed a contract with the Colorado Rockies, as announced by the pitcher on his social media account.

This is the third Rowan Prof from their 2019 squad to sign with an MLB team

The righthander was a two-time ABCA All-Region and two-time All-NJAC selection while playing for the Profs. During his senior season in 2019, he went 6-1 with a 3.03 ERA and 85 strikeouts, and opponents batted just .200 against him. He ranked second in the NJAC in strikeouts while his average of 12.89 strikeouts per nine innings was the ninth-best in the NCAA.

In 2018, DiPiazza compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.49 ERA in 10 starts, and limited the opposition to a .184 batting average. He totaled 78 strikeouts on the year and tied the school record at that time when he had 15 in a win over Ripon.

Kinda quiet on this board.  Rowan is off to a good start in 2021. Some of the seniors are back after the Covid shortened 2020 season.  Transfer Ryan Murphy has taken over the big hitter role for Rowan this season (hit 3 HR's in his first 4 Rowan games). Overall the team is looking solid and should fight for the NJAC title.

Rowan had a phenomenal 2021 season. Was great to see their progress through a tough NJAC season, NJAC tourney, Regionals, and up against the best at the World Series.

Plenty of building blocks should return in 2022 for another run to the D3 WS.

A lot of senior laden teams with lots of players returning for a fifth year. Rowan had a lot of seniors who were key contributors but a good core returning.

Rowan has had a solid 2022. They were the NJAC in-season champs, but were eliminated in the NJAC post season tournament.  They rebounded with a 3-0 victory in the regional.  In a few days they kickoff the super regional against #1 East Conn State

This is certainly possible. As is often the case with state schools, there are lots of things to consider, including whether Rutgers would allow/want another D-I in the state, all of the funding issues, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if schools such as Rowan pursue agreements with D-I schools just in general, which may or may not affect athletics. St. Joe's in Philly just merged with University of the Sciences in Philly. Are other Philly-area schools looking for such partnerships, whether in the form of a merger or otherwise? There are lots of possibilities in play.
