Welcome to the Baseball Message Board for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
Great site - long overdue. Anybody with thoughts on the 2007 NEWMAC season? MIT is coming on strong, Coast Guard has a new coach, WPI will open eyes with one of the leagues top pitchers in Fahey. Etc...
Babson should be strong as well. 3 frontline pitchers return along with their bullpen ace. Their middle infield is intact - Schmitt and Delaney are an excellent combo. Campbell gives them power in the middle of their order. Tough to replace Dziuba's bat but pitching will make up the difference.

No one posted a single time in the 2006 season. :D
Though they lost eight seniors from the team that was runner up in the World Series, Wheaton has a very strong group to build around. Catcher Laplante, Yagjain (2b), Leonard (ss), Guillerault (3b) and Anthoine (of) all were major parts of that successful team. Add the returning pitchers; McDonough, Bernadini, White, Moore and Simmons, and you have another team that will be battling for the right to go to Appleton again!
Many of the teams in the NEWMAC have top flight aces that could give Wheaton trouble. WPI - Fahey, Babson - Whelan, Springfield - Lisowski, etc. Don't mean to leave anyone else out, just not as familiar with their staffs.
Quality of play in the NEWMAC seems to have been consistently improving over the past few years...Wheaton being the most obvious example based on their 2006 accomplishments. I would be wary of the Clark team....they had an ugly season in 2006 but their pitching staff this season is better than people know. Biggest issue for the Cougs will be finding position players in the infield who can catch and throw the ball....they were pitiful in Florida. if they solve this issue they will make some noise.

Welcome rem, thanks for the opinion.
Happy St. Patrick's Day: Orange is the color of the day!![/b]
WOW Wheaton, ranked #2 and currently 2-4 on the season, wins a nail bitter against TCNJ (commonly know as The College of New Jersey), 23-12.
23-12? 23-12? Was this a spring football game? Did TCNJ miss the extra points?
I mean 23-12, 35 runs by 2 teams alleged to be Top 10-15 material?
In the words of the immortal Allen Iverson:
We talkin' 'bout baseball man, not football, baseball, baseball, not, not football, baseball.
TCNJ plays Keene State today. Another tough game. Predictions: TCNJ wins by a field goal.
Write me back, after all how many times can you get an Iverson reference in a D-III baseball posting??
Word
The Wheaton/College of New Jersey game was probably just two teams that when it comes down to it haven't played enough games outside to hit any kind of rhythm with pitching and hitting. It's kind of tough to come from indoor facilities facing your own teamates for over a month or so without seeing any other pitching or hitting. These two teams are pretty good though, so I wouldn't use the word alleged top teams in the nation, because they can play. College of New Jersey averaged almost 10 runs a game in Arizona and Wheaton put together a 4 game winning streak at the end of their trip down there beating UMass Boston, College of New Jersey twice, and Denison. Don't be surprised if Wheaton goes on another 20 + game winning streak this year also.
Babson, 5-1 on trip with wins over Amherst and Trinity.
Wheaton shuts down Southern Maine 2-1 as Josh Moore goes 7.2 and gives up 3 hits and 1 run.
By the way, Joe White is playing in his 5th year? How is that? I understand red-shirting back in the day, but he shows innings pitched in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and now 2007. At my school that adds up to 5 years. Did he get a medical red-shirt?
The Southern Maine/Wheaton game was a good one. Wheaton comes out and looks as if they're going to jump all over Southern Maine early, but they settle down. Wheaton played great defense behind more all day and the bullpen comes in and struggles for a little bit but get the job done.
And Joe White did get a medical red shirt, tommy-john.
After a couple of early season hiccups, Wheaton seems to have hit its stride as the class of the NEWMAC and probably the region. Guillerault heating up and their pitching and defense seem consistently solid now. My understanding of their loss at Coast Guard in Game 1 of a DH was that they ran into a buzz saw in terms of the CG pitcher....note, Wheaton's pitching was pretty darn good that day as well and they actually lost the first game on an error if memory serves.
What is up with Springfield? I know they lost some players but...geeeessh!
I continue to be intrigued by Clark. I know they are only 8-10 ( as opposed to Wheaton's 13-5) but there is something about that team, if you look at the overall stats, that makes me think they could get something going. In general, their pitching has been good and they call on a lot of guys to pitch. It appears they have made a change at shortstop and I am told that this has had a huge impact on their overall defensive improvement ( initially a glaring shortcoming).
They bear watching..... not prepared to predict anything about them at this point...just a feeling that they may be quite a surprise.
Love to hear others' thoughts on the league
Just saw that WPI beat Wheaton today at Wheaton.
Very suprsising, see how they can do this weekend at Babson.
Not too much of a shock...WPI's #1, Fahey, is very, very good.
i didn't know that. Wheaton definitely didn't throw their number 1 but still looks good for WPI. They play two against Babson this weekend, they win the pair and they are 5-1 in the league. Could get interesting.
Interesting...both Gingras and Fahey are sophomores from Rhode Island. If you asked any Legion coaches in RI who would win that game based on pitching alone, every one would say WPI...
I don't know if everyone would say WPI. I have seen both of them pitch and they are both pretty good. Wheaton never seemed to get comfortable at the plate today against Fahey and WPI had 4 or 5 little bloopers that fell in for them for base hits. Mix in some solid base hits and those bloopers will kill you. We'll have to wait for the rematch of the R.I. pitchers.
They are both excellent pitchers! Fahey NEWMAC rookie of the year last year and Gingas getting some starts this year, will certainly develop into a weekend pitcher on a deep staff. I think any D3 (plus many D2 &D1) teams welcome either of these boys on their pitching staffs.
WPI over Wheaton? surprise- yes, but shock- no, w/Fahey on mound - w/o Fahey on Friday it went 15-0 Wheaton w/McDonough 2-hitter - but anyone who has seen the WPI lineup knows that there are a number of tough outs - Fiore at leadoff is #1 in nation for toughest to strike out, Rainone is a very steady hitter, and both Brown & McNee had solid freshman years and are contributing again, also senior bomb threat Mahoney - a group of 4 or 5 frosh recruits w/contact & speed round out a pretty good lineup that usually scores runs - pitching depth, defensive inexperience seem to be issues - Callahan has done a good job recruiting at a school where u need the ballplayer/engineer type (ask MIT) - I noticed that WPI dropped back ends of d-headers in the 8th & 9th vs. Babson & MIT w/leads of 5-0 & 9-3! if they had hung on, guess who might have been NEWMAC season champs?
That's very true but you have to look at depth between Wheaton and WPI. Pretty sure most people would say that department would go to Wheaton. Not only are your starters important but when you get into later innings role players become crucial. When you go into the 8th and 9th innings of games 5-0 and 9-3 somebody needs to come in and finish teams off. IF WPI finishes those two games, yes NEWMAC champs they are, but baseball is an interesting game, never over until it's over. It'll be interesting to see the NEWMAC tourney though, shoudl be some good games.
good points bball13 - and exactly my point that WPI pitching depth may be problem i.e. not being able to finish off teams late - no way to say that WPI is anywhere near Wheaton as a program but don't think anyone would have thought that WPI would come that close, making your point again that baseball is a crazy game to figure and never over til it's over - WPI turns a corner, but can they sustain over time as Wheaton has? Wheaton also seems to do a lot of the little things well necessary to win - as far as tourney goes, we know the bye is huge to line up rotation and tough for teams to use ace in opening round w/o being able to bring back later in weekend, especially if rotation is not deep - but this tourney is always interesting because it's early & moves quickly
Can someone explain to me how Wheaton's Laplante has recieved player of the year honors 2 years in a row??
2006- I thought you could've given it to WPI's Matt Fiore who batted .374, 55 hits, 36 runs, in only 36 games for a team that bid well in the 2006 playoffs. Or how about Laplante's teammate third baseman Scott Guillerault who had an All-American season batting .339, with 14 HR and 60 RBIs. But Laplante who batted a measly .319?
2007- How about Babson's Steve Tamoush who is batting .384 with 66 hits, 42 Runs and 24 RBIs. Or Clark's Joe Silva who batted .383 with 44 hits, 38 Runs and 28 RBIs. But, Laplante gets player of the year again, by currently batting a weak .310, with 45 hits, only 31 Runs and 23 RBIs. Not to mention defensively he has thrown out only 7 runners in 40 games...
Seeing several NEWMAC games this year, he has not handled the staff any better than Silva or Fiore have handled their own, from a defensive stand point.
The numbers don't lie. I think the NEWMAC coaches have got caught up in the politics of the dominant Wheaton organization.
The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) has named Norman and Terry Govoni Field, the home of Babson baseball, the top college division baseball field in America. The award, also sponsored by Turface Products, the country's premier producer of field maintenance products, will be presented to Coach Matt Noone at the annual ABCA national convention, to be held in Philadelphia in January 2008. Joining Coach Noone in accepting the award will be the team most responsible for the supreme condition of the field, led by head groundskeeper Jimmy Lexander, co-worker Doug Pottle, and foreman Nick Butera.
Lyons win fourth straight to complete Arizona trip, sweep 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins and Western New England
March 16, 2008
PHOENIX, AZ- The Wheaton College baseball team completed its Arizona trip on a four-game winning streak Sunday afternoon, as the 13th-ranked Lyons swept 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 13-8 and regional foe Western New England College, 3-0.
Winners in six of its last eight games, Wheaton returns to New England with a 6-4 record, having played eight games against 2007 NCAA Tournament participants, including seven that are either nationally ranked or receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll. Johns Hopkins fell to 4-2 today, while Western New England remained winless through three games.
Junior righthander Adam Gingras (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket) got the Lyons off to a strong start in game one, retiring nine of his first 10 batters through the opening three innings. Wheaton's offense came alive in the third, as senior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) triggered a three-run frame with a two-run double.
Freshman Sean Munley's (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) two-run double highlighted the Blue and White's three-run fifth, pushing the Lyons to a 6-0 advantage. The Blue Jays got a run back in the sixth before evening the score in the seventh, but Wheaton showed its resiliency with seven runs over the next two frames to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings), who smacked a two-run triple to right center in the eighth, went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Senior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) batted 2-for-5 with an RBI, a run and hit by pitch, as 11 different Lyons recorded at least one base knock. Wheaton also drew eight walks.
Gingras had a no-decision after allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 6.2 innings. Freshman Chad Kasik (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) collected his first collegiate victory, giving up an unearned run and two hits in 0.1 frames, while junior Karl Olson (Bethel, ME/Gould Academy) was credited with his first save on two runs, four hits and one strikeout in the final two innings.
In the nightcap, junior southpaw Brian Hughes (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and sophomore Nick Kostaras (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) combined for an eight-hit shutout, as Hughes' impressive outing consisted of seven strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. Winning for the second time this week, Hughes surrendered just five hits while facing six batters over the minimum, setting down 13 of his 14 batters into the fifth. Kostaras fanned three batters with three hits allowed over two frames to corral his first career save.
All three of Wheaton's runs and half of its six hits came during the first three innings, as Guillerault's run-scoring single in the first proved to be the game-winner. Yagjian scored on a wild pitch to make the game 2-0, while Guillerault's RBI in the third extended the Lyon lead.
Junior Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) was Wheaton's lone multiple hitter, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, triple and sacrifice hit. Guillerault had a pair of RBI with a hit by pitch, while freshman Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) was hit by a pitch twice, scored a run, drew a walk and stole a base.
Wheaton's opening game up north is at Rhode Island College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

It looks like the Lyons are off to a solid start. They really put some tough teams on their schedule. I would expect them to take this conference again. Interesting to note is the last line of the press release. Playing on Thursday!? Awesome!!

Jim, Just to clarify. The award is for the best maintained baseball field, ( to me means the field maintenance specifically vs best overall baseball facility)? I believe there is a subtle difference. see below
http://www.profileproducts.com/sports_fields/document.cfm?document=266:
ABCA/Turface Maintenance Award:
Awarded to coaches that have outstanding maintenance programs in both infield and turf care. Winners will receive 1 ton of Turface MVP and $400 to be spent on maintenance equipment, and a plaque recognizing their excellence in field maintenance.
ECSU,
The award recognizes the quality of the field, and obviously if the field is nice, it must have been well maintained. That is why it is noted as the best maintained field. This is the only award given each year to recognize the NICEST field, so I'm not sure what your're trying to clarify. It doesn't have anything to do with seating or facilities, so if that's what you mean then I understand you're point. Babson does not have a row of box seats behind home plate like ECSU, nor does it have stadium style seating. The award is recognizing the playing surface only. Clemson University's field won the award 2 years ago. Legitimate award.

newmac tourney starts today
(1) Babson vs. (6) Clark
(2) Wheaton vs. (5) WPI
(3) MIT vs (4) Springfield
should be some good ones
A shocker in Wellesley--Clark beats Babson 12-11 this afternoon in an opening round game of the NEWMAC tournament. Babson led 11-2 after 6 innings, and pulled its starter, only to have its bullpen implode. Clark scored 10 runs in the 8th, 9 of them earned, to pull out the win. Wow!
More NEWMAC opening round scores:
MIT over Springfield, 11-2
Wheaton over WPI, 10-3
Wheaton pounded out 22 hits, 16 against WPI's #1 pitcher, Conor Fahey, who fell to 8-2 on the season. Chris McDonough got the win for Wheaton. Six Wheaton starters had 3 or more hits.
MIT's Turner pitched a complete game 7 hitter for MIT.
Second round games set for Thursday are:
WPI @ Babson
Clark @ Springfield
MIT @ Wheaton
I think my point was made about Babson being a little to high low come tourney time. Only Babson can give up 10 runs in one innings to blow a sure win game. Very interested to see how they bounce back, they certainly have the talent to do so.... but it seems like it's wheaton's tournament to win again...
on another note, is it possible for any coach to run a pitcher further into the ground than wpi's coach has to to fahey?? this is a kid who was lights out last year and all summer in the necbl, but consistently having him throw over 100 pitches and on 3 days rest just does not give him a shot at success. My hats off to the kid on how well he has performed all things considered.
Looking forward to the weekend. Seems like another Wheaton sweep to me.
Dubbc,
I was actually at the Babson game and I can tell you that Babson came out dominating the game hitting 4 home runs including back to back jacks that made it 11-2. Their ace dominated 6 strong, and then the normally very good bullpen struggled in the 8th. All of Clark's hits were singles, with the majority of them coming on ground balls through holes. Four HBP's in the inning didn't help either, but half were on skimmed jersey balls. But, that's baseball and Babson will have to battle now in the remainder of the tourney. I'm also interested to see how they bounce back vs WPI today, because again Babson is the stronger team, but Clark proved that anyone can get lucky.
It will also be interesting to see if these pesky lower level NEWMAC teams can upset Wheaton for once, seems like in years past they just roll over vs them. I wonder if Clark will ride their momentum for a few games or prove yesterday was only a fluke. Also, I agree about Fahey, its a shame he has been overused because he has a lot of talent for sure. Looking forward to the weekend games.
Turnaround was fair play for Babson today as it eliminated WPI 10-8. A day after giving up 10 runs to Clark in the 8th inning, Babson used an eighth inning rally of its own to stave off elimination this afternoon. WPI led 8-3 going into the bottom of the eighth when Babson erupted for 7 runs on 7 hits to take the lead for good. The key blow was a 3 run homer by shortstop Dave Ahern, who had 2 hits and 4 RBI's on the day. Jeff Wojnar went 6 innings for Babson and John Hudspeth pitched the last 3 and got the win to improve his record to 5-0.
More scores:
Springfield beats Clark, 13-1
Wheaton beats MIT, 13-2
Saturday's pairings:
9:30 Clark vs. MIT (elimination game)
12:45 Babson vs. Springfield (elimination game)
4:00 Wheaton vs. Winner of Clark/MIT game
Two Dallas-Ft Worth players going to MIT (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/columnists/mwixon/stories/052208dnspowixon.28f7557.html).
Nice preseason write up on Wheaton. Sounds like they will have their usual strong deep pitching staff, but will have alot of offfense to replace. Looks like they will return to the NEWMAC regular season title as well as the playoff champion and auto bid.
363, I disagree. Although it is certainly Wheaton's conference to lose, I'm sticking with my prediction that Babson will get the auto bid this year. Babson swept them in the regular season to win the regular season title last year and has quietly put together one of the best programs in all of New England. Aizenstadt should challenge Gingras for pitcher of the year honors and possibly player of the year honors as well. Babson also should have their 3rd rookie of the year in P/OF Bill Miller.
Wheaton lost a thriller the other day to St Johns of Minnesota. THey scored runs in bunches in the end to come back from 10-2. Good sign the offense can score or bad sign the pitching gave up 10?

I'd say bad. The Johnnies can hit, but they're a middling Midwest team. No big deal in postseason terms, but I thought Wheaton would surely beat SJU.
Their defense and pitching were not at the level needed to maintain their reputation. Though this is still very early. They will get roles settled and improve. You will see them in Willamantic in May..............hopefully two different times!
Nice start for WPI's Connor Fahey, who pitched the Engineers to a season opening 3-2 win over St. Joe's of Maine yesterday in Lakeland, FL. Fahey pitched 8 innings of 4 hit ball with 13 K's. WPI pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. St. Joe's started Pat Moran--didn't he pitch for UMaine for a couple of years after a great Legion career for one of the Portland teams? St. Joe's returned the favor in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to win a 14-13 7 inning slugfest.
Good win for the Wheaties as they knock off TCNJ 6-0 behind some very good starting pitching. Good sign that Louie Bernardini showed no rust and almost got the no no against a team of TCNJ quality. Wheaton seems to be off to a good start, correct if i am wrong i think they are 3-1. Them and Babson should be the class of the NEWMAC.
Wheaton is 4-1. They beat TCNJ twice in two days. Good wins against a good team. There only loss so far is to St. Johns 11-12 in ten innings. Were down 10-2 going into the seventh, took the lead in the eigth but couldn't hold on. Not a bad start so far. It is nice to see Louie B. back and throwing well.
I'm very impressed by Wheaton's W over Jonnie Hopkins. This definitely should give some added credibility to the NEWMAC as a "for real" conference in the northeast. I've been reading that Babson picked up their first win of the season in their first Florida contest over 24th ranked Augustana. After sweeping a double dip today against Bethel University to better their record to 3-0 I'd like to see them ranked here on d3bb. What do you guys think?
Wheaton is headed northeast with a little bit of confidence. Doing it with the bat lately, knowing that the pitching will be there. Turning double plays regularly. They are on a roll. Looks like a very fun season is upon us. Play ball!
JustAFan, yes, nice start for WPI's Fahey vs. St. Joe's. As week unfolded, a little trouble vs. Beloit in next start. But also, nice start down south for WPI's Scott McNee, who "temped" in the CCBL this past summer. The 2008 returning NEWMAC Player of the Year hit 3 HRs (one off Moran, who you mentioned in your post, in his 1st AB of year), 6 doubles, 15 runs, 12 RBI, 5 SBs, 28 total bases, slugged near 1.000, and OBP of .560 s-thing in the RussMatt "southern swing". Certainly, Wheaton & Babson are the perennial heavies in the NEWMAC, yet these two guys (Fahey & McNee) have been a huge factor over the last 3 years, along w/some solid supporting cast, in the relative, one step at a time, turnaround for that program. We know its a long season, but I suspect that a team like WPI, although not one of the "big boys" on the playground yet, will at least attempt to be competitive on a daily basis, whether they are able to catch a Wheaton or a Babson by season's end or not.
Pop Fisher
WPI will be in a lot of games with Fahey pitching. I saw him this summer with Lowell in the NECBL. He pitched well into most games and never got much run support. He'll probably be one of the top pitcher in the NEWMAC.
I like Faheys stuff, but theres no question they have run him into the ground at WPI. Gingras and Aizenstadt will battle it out for pitcher of the year with the winner probably going to the team who gets the auto bid.
Wheaton looks like it will be a perennial power. With a deep, experienced pitching staff, strong defense and the ability to handle the bats there should be no reason they don't win the NEWMAC...again.
WPI swept Wheaton to win the regular season title today.
All the NEWMAC league playoff games scheduled for today have been postponed until tomorrow.
Babson Underrated?
Hey guys,
I'm a new member of D3 baseball I haven't seen many games, but have followed every now and again over the years, and figure what the hell why not join if I think i can contribute a little. I've been posting more recently on the general New England boards and whatnot talking about Wheaton/Curry/WPI's chances at large-bid attempts.
However, I recently put together some stats regarding Babson and their pitching and what kind of pitching their offense faced throughout the year. I came across Fahey from WPI, who is having/had a spectacular year, as a legitimate All-American candidate. I also saw they faced Gingras from Wheaton, who was an All-American in his junior campaign, but does not seem to be having quite the season he had last year. Was wondering if anybody knows/knew about any injuries he may have had, or battling currently, or if its just a case of the pieces not falling in the right spots at the right time? Seems like the numbers hes putting up this year don't reflect the type of pitcher he really is. Just a curious question before selection Sunday, the LEC conference, and regionals kick off. (Am I bored over here? Sure. But everybody loves a little baseball :))
Also, congrats to Babson on a well played tourney this year over the heavily favored Lyons. This regional is going to be a great spectacle to watch with the teams that may be there this year. Also good luck to Wheaton and WPI as they attempt to secure at large bids and see Babson over in the regionals (Babson would love to see that ;)) Thanks. Have a good day.

d3spectator,
I think it was more of the pieces not falling into place. His two losses he gave up 12 runs but only 4 were earned. Having talked to him he will be the first to tell you that no matter what happens behind him he has to make pitches to get the team off the field. His ERA got inflated after the RIC game only because the home plate ump was not giving either team calls on the corners. All pitchers that day were painting the corners and getting no calls forcing them to throw it down the middle. That's probably why they ended up with a 19-13 final score.
Sorry Wheaton, and Congratulations to WPI!
We overvalued New England this year.
I am usually posting in the basketball boards here, but just had to stop in and give a big hand to WPI.
Congratulations to the WPI baseball team! They have had the greatest baseball season in school history and will played for the first time ever in the D3 NCAA Baseball Championship Tournament!
Just had to say a few words about WPI today.
First, Coach Mike Callahan's Engineers look to be the next up and coming NE team out of the NEWMAC!!
Second, Coach Callahan looks to be the next star coach in NE
Third and finally, I have not seen a more gutsy performance in my life than the one displayed by Conor Fahey today vs ECSU.
Just a really superb athlete, very very smart kid, who deserves a lot of credit for his performance today!!!
Best of luck to him in the future, be it in the pros or in his future non athletic career :)
So as the year begins to get going, how do you think this season will pan out in the NEWMACs?
Willows478, I posted this on the General New England site a little while ago.
Hey guys, I followed a little d3 baseball in New England the past couple of years and it seems in the NEWMAC that the power tide may be shifting however Wheaton has to be considered the favorite year in and year out. Just the overall dominance they have displayed since they've been a team has been unthinkable. What is it now, something like 9 out of the 11 NEWMAC championships have gone there (I'll dig it out after). I will say Babson will have another deep run with returning pitching but losing those two key guys at 2b and the OF will hurt. Wheaton also has their own problems but it will not be on the offense side, they lost one position player in All-New England selection Nick Pecora, but return every position player from a team who won 30 games last year. Their struggles will come from pitching from both the starting and bullpen aspects. They lost 3 starting pitchers most notable All-American Adam Gingras (playing anywhere??). They also lost their All-New England closer in Josh Simmons as well. WPI may be in the mix depending how they recruited in their off-season however you can't replace All-American Conor Fahey, he was their ace starter and closer for that matter, without that kid WPI doesn't win much of anything, but we will see. As for Clark I just don't see them reloading and recruiting enough talent on both the pitching and hitting side of the game to keep up with Wheaton and Babson, unless they bring in a couple of big bats and one go to ace I think this comes down to Wheaton and Babson and whether or not some of the Wheaton young kids can step up.

WPI beats RPI...Impressive stuff so far. At 6-0 and coming off their regional success, I might place them at the top of the NEWMAC right now.

Nice work. Should bring more informed readers to this site as well as your own.
Babson and WPI sweep doubleheaders in first NEWMAC weekend.
Good day for both teams pitchers as the bullpens really shut things down.
WPI now 10-0 on the year
http://ned3baseball.wordpress.com/ (http://ned3baseball.wordpress.com/)
Wheaton is struggling and WPI and Babson are riding win streaks at the beginning of the season. Is this the year Wheaton is removed from the ranks as a perennial top team in the country? I think so.

Take a look at the schedules they've played so far... then reconsider your statement...I'm sure wheaton would enjoy feasting on the spring schedules both schools have had rather then playing 5 games vs. top 30 teams
YA, Boy...I just looked at both schedules. Right now, I don't see much of a difference. Wheaton played Cortland, Suffolk, and Curry, WPI played RPI and two against St. Joes (ME). Add the league weekend sweep for WPI and split for Wheaton and I would say we have a new favorite.
Other big news in the NEWMAC...Where is Aizenstadt? He has yet to throw for Babson. That is huge!!
WPI drops its first game of the year to Worcester St.
Check back tomorrow for a weekend preview...Babson and WPI set for a double-dip Saturday!
http://ned3baseball.wordpress.com/
WPI lost its first game of the season yesterday pretty convincingly and Babson has won 8 straight games, including back to back wins over Suffolk and KSC, without even using Aizenstadt yet! Anybody know where he is? Could Babson be saving their ace for this weekends double header against the nationally ranked WPI? Babson looks very strong. Should be a great, great day of baseball Saturday.
Anybody know who Babson's starter was against KSC? Threw a great game but I had never heard of the name and the kid was a senior. ???
Curry-WNEC doubleheader pushed back until Monday and WPI-Babson games moved to Babson so that means I will be there tomorrow!!!

Babson takes game one 1-0. Kucher hits his first career home run in the top of the 7th and Michael O'Brien threw a complete game.
Babson sweeps WPI with still no Aizenstadt. I think its pretty clear who the top team so far in the NEWMAC is. The Babson/Wheaton series in a couple weeks should be interesting.
Two good games over at Babson today...
Check out a short recap and interviews here
http://ned3baseball.wordpress.com/ (http://ned3baseball.wordpress.com/)
Incredible game today as Babson took down Worcester St in 13 innings on a walk off double. WOW! What a game. This team is really on fire right now.
Looking at the box score what a game!!! Kucher another big home run but Babson cant hold the lead in the ninth. Teams combine for five home runs, wind must have been blowing out today!
Aizenstadt got the start but only threw one inning. Gave up a home run. Willows were you there? And if so, was it injury that took him out or were they only giving him one inning?
I'm not sure. But it certainly seemed like it was a scheduled one inning. They had the bullpen going before Aizenstadt even threw a pitch.
Interesting. Good news for Babson for him to get in a game. Add O'Brien and Babson has a great 1-2 punch!
Very scrappy team but not much speed on the basepaths. Kucher looks like hes going to be a real good player.
WHERE OH WHERE ARE THE WHEATIES??????
Ya, Boy
Excellent question. Funny how quickly fans jump off a team's bandwagon after a poor start.
Is it actually going to be a down year for Wheaton? I just cannot see that happening because of their consistent success over the past decade. Are bigger recruits falling to the upstart powers like WPI and Babson now?

Easy willows not off the bandwagon still my favorite in the NEWMAC by far, just wondering what's goin on in Norton!?!
Wheaton still 4-1 in the NEWMAC but a big game with Keene tomorrow...dont write them off just yet.
What I think and a preview of this weekends big games!!

Comment and let me know what you guys think!
Stellar column this week hobbsey, keep it up
I see Bowdoin making a statement this weekend also...Do yout think woo St can keep up their pace?
Ya, Boy
Ya, Boy-
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed.
As for Worcester St.-
Its hard to tell because, like everyone else, the early rains have made their schedule a mine field. A string of poor play dooms them but consistency will keep them in the polls. Unlike some other conferences, there is no team that is far and away better in the MASCAC. This was evident last year when Westfield St won the championship as the fourth seed.
I think its going to be those two again in the finals but I think Worcester St. could have the hitting advantage. Pitching...depends on who survives April
Hi all...
Big weekend in the NEWMAC starting this Thursday with Wheaton taking on Clark who they beat 3-2 in a duel in Worcester and clark coming off a huge upset win over babson....and also Babson taking on springfield who beat the beavers in extras earlier this season...
Then on Sat. the fireworks will be going off as Wheaton goes to Wellesley to take on the highly touted beavers for two...
Predictions...whatever you come up with i'm sure there will be surprises everywhere as the NEWMAC regular season starts to play out into the final weeks...
Ya, Boy
The doubleheader between Wheaton and Babson 4/9 is being streamed live over the web. Here is the link in case you'd like to watch and can't get to the game:

Wheaton sweeps Babson in the big DH at the Beaver Lodge. After losing all the pitching they did Corr is now 5 - 0. Nice day for the Lyons, hoping to make it a great weekend with a win over USM tomorrow!

Thanks 363 Lovin those Lyons
Ya, Boy
The Lyons broke out the bats for a 27 -2 win over Roger Williams as Corr improves to 6-0. Ya Boy!!!
Wheaton again regular season champion. Just pounding the ball and pitching is coming around. Are they the best team in New England????? Ya Boy and I say they are!!
They are looking pretty darn good and especially with the NEWMAC tournament coming up this week...look out though if Babson can get Aizenstadt back...it may not help against this Wheaton offense but stranger things have happened so far this spring.
Although I have still surprised Curry took all three games from Wheaton...
I cant quite nail WC in on the number one spot in NE...agree with hobbsey the three losses to Curry and UMB amongst others leave doubts. Everyone seems to be having these types of seasons, but in the coming weeks the men will separate from boys and the cream will rise to the top...
Ya, Boy
Word from Wellesley is that Aizenstadt won't be back this year for the Beavers. They could still catch fire like they did last year in the tournament and prove why they were the number one team in NE earlier this year.
Unfortunately the Beavers have also lost their Freshman DH Chris Kutcher who broke his thumb. He'll be out for the rest of the season.
Wow! He was having a pretty nice freshman campaign too, leading the team with 6 homers. The Beavers might be in trouble without that big bat in the lineup. Is that known for sure?
Wheaton moves onto the championship game tomorrow with an 11-4 win over WPI and Babson is trailing Coast Guard 4-1 in the fourth of an elimination game.
Not looking good for the Beavers.
Roads paved for the lyons gotta come out and expect a game from a surging Coast Guard team who proved they can play with the better NE teams beating Babson and WPI in one day!!!!!
Prediciton:
Lyons pick up the loose ends of USCGAs pitching staff tomorrow and lay it on...but the bears will not go down without a fight as they pounded out hits today vs the beavers and engineers...should be fun to watch

NEWMAC Announces 2010 Baseball Post-Season Award Winners
BABSON PARK, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2010 Baseball award winners on Tuesday. The NEWMAC Tournament Champion, Wheaton, led the way with five All-Conference selections, including the NEWMAC Player of the Year, Dan Haugh (Andover, Mass.) and Rookie of the Year honoree, Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass.). Wheaton head coach Eric Podbelski also earned his ninth NEWMAC Coach of the Year award. Babson had three First Team All-Conference picks, including NEWMAC Pitcher of the Year Michael O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.). MIT received the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award for the third time in four years.
In addition to Haugh, teammates Nolan Corr (Somersworth, N.H.), Paul Malaguti (Andover, Mass.) and Sean Munley (Trenton, N.J.) were tabbed to the First Team All-Conference. O'Brien was joined on the First Team by Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) and Billy Besinger (Milton, Mass.). Tyler Babkiewich (Golden, Colo.) of Coast Guard and MIT's Stewart Park (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the First Team.
Ryan was a Second Team All-Conference pick, along with Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.) of Babson, Steve DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) and Phillip DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) of Clark, Springfield's Joe Kropa (Cranford, N.J.) and John Schmaltz (Cromwell, Conn.), and Jameson Kokolis (Manchester, N.H.), Cody McGregor (Westfield, Mass.) and Thomas Whiting (Farmington Hills, Mich.) of WPI.

Pitcher of the Year: Nolan Corr VS Michael O'Brien
ERA: Corr 0.89 - O'Brien 1.91
W-L: Corr 8-0 - O'Brien 4-2
Innings: Corr 50.1 - O'Brien 47
Opp AVG: Corr .230 - O'Brien .260
Head to Head: Corr won 2-1
So who is Pitcher of the Year: O'Brien....?
----This doesn't make sense. You must have misspelled Corr's name with O'Brien's.
Also, Lieneck, Skelley, and Jensen are all hitting .379, .354, .359 with 20+ RBI's each. Not one of them are mentioned. Their averages are better then several First team members and better then a .291 avg on second team...
Wheaton had a great year and were certainly reward. Coach of the Year, Player of the year, 4 first team All Conference selections.
The 2-1 head to head matchup between the two was a great game.

Hey, I'm dying to hear any news from the NEWMAC! Does anyone know what's happening with the teams?
Who makes their spring trip here to AZ? I'd like to get out and see them play since I don't think I'll be going to FL this year to catch Babson playing.
The Unofficial 2011 NEWMAC preview:
Babson is likely the preseason favorite with a number of talented players back and word on the street is that Aizenstodt was healthy and in the low 90's at the end of fall workouts.
Wheaton returns the best position player in the league in Danny Haugh, and a top pitcher in Nolan Corr. Although they lost a lot from last year's team, they always do a great job recruiting and tend to reload instead of rebuild.
WPI lost a huge senior class and will be impacted by no longer having a home field as their new athletics center is being built on the site of their old field. It will be interesting to see how they fare offensively with the loss of some great senior hitters and the new bats.
MIT could be a beneficiary of the new bat regulations. The Engineers finished second in the conference in pitching in 2010 and return their entire pitching staff along with senior catcher Danny Hyatt. The Engineers will have to replace Stewart Park, who created a lot of offense for them.
Coast Guard made a deep run in the NEWMAC tournament last year. Pitcher Tyler Viera and shortstop Tyler Babkiewicz both had award winning freshman campaigns in New London.
Clark had a tough lineup last year and figures to be strong offensively again, but will have to replace LHP Jon Merritt, who was their ace last year.
Springfield will have a veteran team, with nine seniors on this year's squad. The 2010 Pride were very athletic, and this year's squad will need to rely on some young arms to help get them to the NEWMAC tournament.
There are two major changes in the NEWMAC this year. First, the conference has shifted to a 3 game series format, with each team playing 18 conference games. Also, only the top 4 team will qualify for the conference tournament. It should be a great year!
The Beavers certainly look to be strong this year. But I don't know if you can mark them as favorites just yet. Lots of guys coming off major injuries that will need to be healthy for them to be successful. If fully healthy though, the 1-2 punch of Aizenstadt and Ahern will be tough to beat in a 3-game conference series.
Until then though, have to think Wheaten, the reigning champs, should be favored again in the NEWMAC.
I agree that Wheaton has to be the favorite in the NEWMAC until April 1 & 2nd when Babson and Wheaton meet. They have had too good a track record of bringing in talented players and have a dominating #1 in Corr.
Babson returns the conferences' rookie pitcher of the year in Lyon. They will miss the conferences' pitcher of the year O'Brien but Lyon and the lefty MacNeill threw the 2nd and 3rd most innings on the team. If Aizenstadt and Ahern are healthy, they figure to be one and two.
Offensively the Beavers graduated there 3rd baseman Bartlett who lead the team in BA at .379, their lead off hitter O'Toole and one of there two starting catchers Scanlon, who has joined the coaching staff. Still their lineup figures to be strong 1-9 with the return of Ahern and a full year from So. Kucher, who led the team in OPS.
I love that they are playing a three game conference series this year but with games just about every day in season it will be a grind. Can't wait for the season to begin!
MIT's pitching was ranked 2nd in the conference last year? I bet you can't name one of their starters. That they can be competitive at all amazes me. Their school workload is extremely difficult to say the least and it is a very tough school to recruit.. I saw where they had the 20th toughest schedule in all of D3 last year and they finished above 500.
MIT sweeps Wheaton today with 1-0 and 5-3 finals. Great start for MIT (5-1, 2-0)...they are a very gritty team that does everything the right way
Nice sweep by the Lyons today over Babson and the big A. Getting themselves back in the hunt for the newmac regular season title. Still a big game tomorrow.
Wow who is the brain trust that came up with this tournament schedule. Play the first round, then take a day off, play the next round, then get rained out, and postpone the rest of the tournament an entire week. Basically this tournament decides who has the best two pitchers.
Wildthng-
I could not agree more! It makes no sense. Even if they played yesterday and the winner of the Babson/MIT game beat Wheaton in the 2nd game, the "if" game would not have been played until monday! It hurts Babson and MIT because now they will have to face Wheaton's ace on full rest. With the NECC earning an automatic bid this season, at-large bids are going to be few and far between (I would assume).
It will give us one heckuva pitching matchup in that Babson/MIT game though. Should be Aizenstadt or Ahern against Dama you would assume. Ahern went all 10 innings, struck out 14, didnt walk a batter and had three hits, including the game-winning hit in the 10th.
I think you'll see Ahern go against MIT
Wheaton will once again return to Harwich hoping to return to Appleton. Looks like they have the players and coaching to do that! Go Lyons.
