Looks like the new Player Watch List for the Collegiate Basketball Invitational is out. It appears that the committee is down to 95 players for the 60 invitations for this prestigious event: www.mccarthysports.com

Brian Williams 6'0" Whitworth NCAA D- III
Tori Davis 6'3" Baldwin Wallace NCAA D-III
Brandon Adair 6'5" VA Wesleyan NCAA D-III

Yeah. You know, we might want to make sure that some of these guys will actually show up as well before we go with prestigious.

I really like Miss College's Timothy Broomfield. :)

Gee, Ralph, do you think he likes you? Maybe you should pass him a note after gym. :-* ;) :D
I'm just having fun that Amir Mazarei is on the list. Though he is definitely not quite 5'11" and he's probably not got much chance at anything after college because of that, I like the props for a great college player. :)
And no, I've never passed a note down to the bench for him David. :P :P :D

A short white guy like me with 7" vertical leap? ??? :-\

Now I'd really like to see USWP play with no one on that list.
Gonna bump this so it's on the top screen again.

Point usually plays outstanding
team ball. They are a very good team. With that said, had this thing been put together two years ago, Jason Kalsow would definitely be on that list, IMO.
I would love to know how Tom Port makes this list over Tim Vandervaart. Granted he has an injury for most of the year, but Vandervaart is clearly the better player, especially in crunch time. When Wooster needed a basket, option #1 was Vandervaart, #2 Cooper, and #3 Port. Maybe its because Vandervaart is undersized for his position and Port would be a better prospect overseas? Any thoughts on this?
I think this thing is all about projected professional ball, yeah. Port has the size and ballhandling skills to play a guard spot.

I think that's why Kerry Gibson got an invite. He has the size and ball handling skills to play the guard spot as well. :P
Hah. :)
I was looking at the schedule. It kind of stinks that if your team loses its first two games they are done. Two games doesn't seem like much exposure for a whole weekend. I would have thought they'd get each team at least three games.
Do these guys have to pay anything to be at this tournament or is it all taken care of?
Anybody planning on going? Is it even open to the public?
I assume at least one of the main writers for D3hoops will. But I thought since it was in Ohio there might be some folks who would make a weeknd out of it.
I'm thinking it's not open to the public.
It is open to the public. Here is a blurb about ticket information from their website:
As a reminder, game tickets are available by calling Wadsworth High School at 330-336-3260. Lower bowl tickets for each of the six sessions are $7 and upper bowl tickets are $5. Tickets for the All Star Game on Saturday night, April 21, are expected to sell out, so it is suggested that you purchase these tickets in advance.
I stand corrected! lol. When I first read the webpage, I got the impression it was just for scouts and stuff. Oh well. That's what I get for being lazy and looking prior to posting! ::)

I hear on the lazy note. But maybe I am just blind. I was trying to see if any of the games will be webscast. I know the final will be on ESPN U.
I hope we can at least get box scores from the games.
If they publish box scores, Old School will start a CBI Fantasy League. ;)
I was up at Wadsworth this afternoon and caught a game and a half. Wooster's Tom Port had a nice outing and his team came from behind to win by 3 or 4. If my memory is correct he hit 4 out of 5 threes plus a left-handed layup for 14 points (11 in the second half). He also played some excellent defense, mostly guarding wingmen like himself, which is something he didn't often get to do at Wooster where he was needed underneath.
The basketball was pretty darned good, considering that these were all-stars that hadn't had much practice time. The crowd was sparse, and that's unfortunate, because it was a good show. I'm going back tomorrow night to see the evening session, or at least Port's game at 4:30.
Was it to be expcected that the all star team had only 1- D3 hoopster?
(Tori Davis of Bladwin-Wallace)
It's hard ot make many asessments without seeing any of the players, but for the guys we are familiar with, did we get robbed? I was hoping for at least 3/8.
There wasn't a huge d3 presence to begin with. I would have thought 2 of 8, but one is what we have to work with.
Obviously, I didn't see any of the games (or else I would've had a fantasy league...just kidding), but I noticed that Ricky Volcy guy was in the tourney. He's a D2 guy from Northern Michigan. Stevens Point went up to Marquette to play them and the guy was unbelievable. I looked it up and he ended up being the conference player of the year...So, I guess you could see what the D3 players were up against. Not to take anything away from them, of course, but it was invite only, right?
yeah... did any of you guys happen to see the selection comittee. UST's (St. Thomas) own Steve Fritz among others. Most "selectors" seem to have a representative in the invitational.

Who do you think should get invited from NCAA Div. III's senior class for the 2008 Collegiate Basketball Invitational?
It's a little early to be asking that, isn't it? The CBI takes place after the season. Howzabout we let this coming season take place before we decide who has earned a spot in the CBI and who hasn't?
How about we see if that event even still exists at the end of the season.

Seven guards, 14 forwards, and Ben Strong. Not a bad list; we'll see who actually gets an invite.

What else would you call him? Honestly, though, if he gets an invite to one or more of the NBA camps, I suspect he'll decline the invite to the CBI, no?
I chatted with Brett Adams on the season finale of Hoopsville Tuesday night. We talked only about the CBI... and thought those reading this Post Up would be interested.

When you hold an all star game i thought it was for the best players not just the best teams best players. Isnt that how the all amercan list is selected every player selected to the cbi absolutely deserve it it just seems better individual players were left out once again. Seems as if numbers just dont matter in this sport anymore
I've answered your question on the other board you posted it on.
Are any of last year's CBI players currently playing in the NBA? If so, who?
None of last year's players from the CBI are in the NBA.
Here's the list of small college players that are currently in the NBA (according to nba.com):
Chris Anderson Blinn College, TX (JC) -- New Orleans Hornets
Darrell Armstrong Fayetteville State (D2) -- New Jersey Nets
Devean George Augsburg (D3) -- Dallas Mavericks
Jemario Moon Meridian CC (JC) -- Toronto Raptors
Ronald Murray Shaw (D2) -- Indiana Pacers
Jeremy Richardson Delta State (D2) -- Atlanta Hawks
Ben Wallace Virginia Union (D2) -- Cleveland Cavaliers
Thank you.
There are a few playes from last years CBI that are playing in the D-league, however. I list a couple, but there may be more:
Luke Anderson - Minnesota St.
Damien LoLar - West TX A&M
All the action starts this week.....www.collegiatebasketballinvitational.com.
What a joke that all-star game was. At first I was wondering when James Cooper would even get some minutes, but it made no difference. He got nearly as many touches of the ball on the bench as he did when he was on the floor. The guy put up fantastic numbers in his three regular games, shooting 19-31 including 9-15 from behind the arc. Despite that, his so-called teammates decided to literally shut him out. If I had been him, I would have started guarding my own guards; it might have given him a chance to get the ball. Baloney to that tournament. I didn't know if Cooper could play at that level. His first three games proved that he definitely could, and then this complete bull****. Again, what a joke, and it might have cost him a chance to play pro ball somewhere.
Scouts were there all three games. I don't think not being involved in the ALL-STAR game was going to cost him a chance to play pro ball somewhere...If his first three games were good enough, that will get him a contract, that last game isn't going to make or break his chances, IMO
anyone know how olson played
This tournament is really controlled by the NAIA Coaches. The tournament is a typical All Star tournament about guys trying to show their stuff. One or two passes on offense and they jack it up. Olson played his typical game where he shared the ball and not really a chance to show what he can do in a set offense. It is a great opportunity for most of these players to showcase what they have. Without it many would have a battle to get any recognition. Big guys benefit the most from this exposure.

Sounds like that's the complete opposite. Usually it's guards and quick forwards that benefit the most, using their quickness, athleticism and ability to play above the rim with dunks, tossing up 3s and taking players one v one. That seemed to be the case (from what I read) at the McDonald's All-American game in Milwaukee...probably not too many "set plays" and a lot of individualism, I suspect. Of course, I wasn't there! ;D
Olson played pretty well. He didn't put up elite numbers, but showed that he was capable of playing at that level.
I was pleased to see Troy Ruths put up some reasonable numbers in his 3 games - going in, wasn't sure how he would do with his history of being a '5' man at 6'6" - but he adjusted to the tune of 13 points a game and 5 rebounds - even made a 3 pointer!!!! Congrats Troy, hope it was a fun week - now if You'd come to work for us, I need some serious IS help....
