GC 87 RC 76. Great game! Lots of gritty playing, with Hannah Wolf knocking in 3s, lots of turnovers, and a determined effort by the GC squad. Ripon looked a bit stunned as they left the court. This team shows great promise for the rest of the season and of course next year.
Great defense and rebounding as well. Kaitlin Shannon had her best game as a Pioneer today. The guard court with Wolf and Veit worked so well together. Shumacher doesn't show up so much in the box score, but she has been giving some great error free minutes and providing some press breaking speed. B. Burt is really contributing right now with great pressure defense. In the teams two recent wins, she's become a defensive momentum switcher.
Congrats to ALL the Pioneer Women for a stunning victory that at least a few of us knew was due!

SNC Women on top of Conference standings
Great road trip this weekend ladies! Three more games to go, with tough games against Carroll, Lawrence and Ripon. The Knights are playing together and are primed for an NCAA bid!
Big games this weekend with a few shockers. This time of year the teams with no chance have one thing in common - get the W's against the top of the conference. That's just what happened. This time of year also, you never know what's going to happen. Still no forsure as to the host of the tourney yet. It proly won't be locked in until the last game of the season. Big weekend next weekend LU at SNC. What a game that will be! Since LU snapped their losing streak against the Knights at home early in the season, who knows what will happen. Very pleased with #23's play this past week. #22 as well. Frosh post off the bench has been making it a physical game for LU. Very excited to see how this week plays out. The Vikes can't look past BC right now. Take it a game at the time! Go Vikes!!!
I'm going to have to say that I'm VERY impressed with the way that SNC has QUIETLY shimmied their way to the top of the conference once again. I believe that some people on this website were majorly hatin on the Knights a while back and I'm glad that the ladies of DePere are showing what real gritty MWC bball is all about. Congrats and good luck tomorrow against Carroll. Where are we?
Shimmied ? Ooh, that's a good word for describing women's hoops. Kind of reminds me of a brass pole in DePere.
keep it clean.
Sorry, my mind wandered there for a minute.
Big game on Saturday between the Vikes and Green knights....I think LU can pull the win off again and sent the green Knights not shimmying, but sliding down the pole backwards...
Games tonight
How did LU do against BC? SNC defeated Carroll down in Waukesha with a solid defensive effort, forcing a lot of turnovers while also getting a good effort from their sophomore posts Bianca White and Kelly Dugan. I wish the MWC site was better at updating scores sooner!
LU with an easy win over BC...no question in the second half who was the winner.
Game of the year Saturday at 2....LU at SNC, for the right to host...gonna be huge...LU's biggest game in 3 years...
Saturday's game is going to be awesome!! I'm sure SNC is going to be majorly "up" for that game. Not only is it a big game, with big implications, but the revenge factor is going to be huge. I am pulling for my Vikes (how cool would it be to have both men's and women's conference tourneys in Alex?!), but it is going to be a tough test. I wish I could be there!
Anyone have a prediction for the conference tourney?
As much as I love my Vikes, I think the Green Knights are going to just be too tough. They are in the midst of a 10 game winning streak and their defense is obviously outstanding. What did LU shoot against them? 20%? 30%? You can blame only so much of that on just being cold.
I think LU will get past Ripon (yet again) in the 2 vs. 3 match-up and SNC will beat IC (although it will be a tough game - IC only lost by 4 a few weeks ago). But, I don't think LU will have enough to take down SNC again (not that I won't be rooting for the upset!). I do think it will be a much better game than this weekend.
I like SNC's chances in this year's conference tourney. I think IC (or LF if they beat out IC) will be a tough test but the Knights are playing too good of D right now. Ripon/LU will be a great matchup, not sure who wins that one - if LU has their press going and Getzoff gets hot, it could be a double digit victory for the Vikes. For the title game, it's hard to go against SNC with the way they're playing right now. If they play like they did Saturday, it's a conference championship and a NCAA bid. For Lawrence to win they need Poratta and Getzoff on their games, and their diamond press to be 100% effective for them to have a chance at beating the Knights in Schuldes arena.
I agree with your assessment, E. Part of the problem that I think LU will face is getting up for another game if they beat Ripon in the 1st round. I have been involved in enough RC vs. LU match-ups in a variety of sports (as a player and a spectator) to know that you get so pumped up for that game that it is hard to follow it up with another strong performance.
I'm sure Coach Proctor will do her best to get them going again for the championship and they have some experienced players (Poratta and Getzhoff), but if they beat Ripon, it's going to be tough to come back the next day with the same fire. Their best hope is to put Ripon away early and win in a blow-out, but I don't really see that happening.
so close to the play-offs and nobody's talkin' smack?
ITS ALMOST PLAYOFF TIME BABY!!! Damn I love basketball. Ripon or LU? LFC or SNC? I really think its anyones championship this year. I am glad that LFC made the show. I think they can get past SNC better than IC could have. Don't by any means count out SNC. They have a great program and I think Rachel Dom. is a super cool kid, but I am seeing (maybe secretly hoping) that they lose. No offense, but I want my team to win. That's that. Ripon and LU???? What a great tournament game! Ripon seeking revenge from their Feb loss to LU and LU seeking respect and proving they are one of the best teams in the conference. It's going to be a great game.
I hope its a great tournament. The last one at SNC wasn't very exciting - except for the championship game. Good Luck to all the teams - give us spectators something to cheer about!
(Go Vikes)
Sorry it's been a while since the last post! I was a little disheartened after the loss to Ripon, but then I realized that the girls didn't have too much to play for, so it's no big surprise that they came out flat. That being said, I think this is going to be a very very tight tournament. LFC can certainly knock SNC out in the first game, but I think the girls on this team still have the "sweet" taste of the Sweet 16 from two years ago and want to get back there, especially this year's seniors.
I think the Ripon/LU game will be a great one to watch. I like the energy both Emmer and Poratta bring to the game. The question is which Ripon squad will show up: the one that dominated SNC up here in De Pere or the one that lost three straight conference games toward the end of the season? I think Ripon will probably beat the Vikes (sorry LU fans) and move on to the championship game vs. the Knights.
Who will win the championship? That's a tough one, simply because of what Ripon did to SNC last week...But I think the squad is fired up and wants to get that tournament seed. The problem playing SNC is that we do not have one person you can key on...If you try and shut down Robak, Meg Hau will score on you...or any one of our posts will step up and have a big game. If SNC matches or exceeds Ripon's intensity, then the conference championship will be theres. If they come out flat again, then it's goodnight sweetheart, and Ripon gets their second straight tourney bid.
That's all, I'm out folks
Okay, I'm going to have to disagree with you "E" - I think LU will take care of Ripon. They still have the bitter taste in their mouths from the SNC loss and desperately want a rematch to prove that their win earlier in the season wasn't a fluke.
And I don't give much weight to Ripon's performance against SNC. As you said, the Green Knights didn't have much to play for. We saw that from LU vs. Carroll on the men's side. You never want to lose certainly, but when there isn't much at stake, it's hard to get too up for it and the underdog gains an advantage.
So, my predictions are for an LU vs. SNC rematch in the title game. As I said earlier, my head can see SNC winning, but my heart is for LU!
Go Vikes!!
Congrats to the Redhawks. You should cheer for who beat you, right? Therefore I was all about my Ripon tee today. So congrats to them. I am very excited to see who they will play this week. I hope the girls are having a blast tonite. Good luck to them in the Playoffs!
Go Redhawks
As much as it pains me to say it, I do have to agree with classy_vike - Go Ripon (I never thought I would catch myself saying those words!)!! But, you have to root for the team that beat you.
Plus, it would be nice to see a MWC team make a run in the national tourney. Let's get some of that national recognition on the women's side like we are starting to get for the men - thanks to LU's run last year (you knew I couldn't leave without saying something about my Vikes!)
Go Redhawks (look - twice in one post)!!
It is time to find out who is in... and who is out.
Whose bubble has been burst and who is wearing Cinderella's glass slippers.
It's Selection Sunday... and tonight there will be a special "Hoopsville" as the 2005 NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Brackets are announced... LIVE on our air!
The Road to Salem and Virginia Beach officially starts tonight! It plans to be a huge night... as 50 womens and 48 mens teams are officially invited to the dance and a chance at a national title.
Some teams already know they are going (thanks to winning their conferences) and some think they are going, but there are always surprises.
So tonight, we will break it all down. Starting at 8:30 PM EST, we will take a look at who is definitely in, who might make it, who will be disappointed, and what match-ups you might want to look forward to seeing later in the week.
Then at 10:00 PM EST... we will broadcast LIVE the Women's Selection Show so you can find out when we do... the 50 teams on the Road to Virginia Beach.
That will be followed by the Men's Selection Show at 10:30 PM EST - when 48 teams find out what their Road to Salem will be like.
After those selections... we will go over it with a fine-tooth comb and find out who we think are the surprises!
And throughout the show, we will hear from different regions with live reports and talk to coaches that have made surprising moves into the tournament.
Of course, you can listen in thank to
Goucher College.
We suggest you try and use the low-bandwith signal which will require you to have
Real Player and selection the

Again... it all starts tonight at 8:30 PM EST.
WAY TO GO RIPON GIRLS!!!
Time for yet another run in the playoffs. Get that first home win Wednesday! I don't know anything about Rockford, but I don't think they'll be able to handle Ripon's frontcourt of Guay (styx), Emmer, and Dehn.
Home game for the Redhawk women - that's great for the MWC. Good for you, ladies!! Let's see a run!!
Hey all - MWC All-Conference is out. Congrats to Emmer for POY and to all the All-Conference selections. Ripon/SNC tied for most selections with 3. My Vikes had 2 1st teamers - Getzoff & Porrata. You can count on Stoner being on this team before she is done. She doesn't have the big point numbers, but she is a hell of a defender. She never gives anyone room to breathe!
Hey does anyone know why they do 10 1st teamers on the women's side (instead of 5 1st team, 5 2nd team, and 9/10 Honorable mention like the guys)?
The power of 3 for RC!
Emmer, Dehn, and Guay. Super studs.
NO idea why the girls have a different All-MWC ratings. First time I realized that.
It's time for the Big Dance... the teams are selected... the games are scheduled... and now 48 men's and 50 women's teams will take to the court this weekend with the same goal... a national title.
But who will win? The tournament previews are tonight on "Hoopsville"!!! Sunday night we were live when the teams were selected and we found out who was in and out. The women's bracket was done relatively well... the men's bracket seems to be a bit of a disappointment.
But now we are looking ahead at the big games this weekend. From now on its win or go home.
One of those men's teams that is one of the hottest in the nation is #17 Gustavus Adulphus... who is riding an 18-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament. The Gusties now will take on Lawrence on Thursday and could face the defending National Champs, UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. So, what might Mark Hanson be thinking. We will hear from him tonight and how his team has recovered from their 4-5 start to the season.
Now... the NCAA doesn't seed the Men's and Women's Brackets... but we will!
Tonight, live on the air, we will seed the men's and women's brackets according to how we see it and how we think the NCAA was thinking. So you can get an idea of who the NCAA thinks are the top teams and who might be hosting games in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 (Regionals).
And there are new #1 teams in both the Men's and Women's Top-25 this week... but barely. UW-Stevens Point is just points ahead of Amherst on the men's side. And on the women's, it is just a point between Scranton and Bowdoin.
We will breakdown the final regular season Top-25 and try and figure out what the voters were thinking. Along with pointing out how not all of the Top-25 made the tournament.
And of course, we will have live regional reports from around the nation and take your questions and comments live on the air.
So come join us online and LIVE from 8PM - 10PM Eastern!

Hoopsville": only place where you can listen or chat about Division III Basketball in the nation.

Ripon over Rockford 62-57, play next at UW Stout.
Congrats, Redhawks!! Good luck on Saturday...
Let's go Hawks. See you at Stout!
Did you kids see that RC game??!! It was amazingly intense! What a great way to start NCAA tournament play. Very excited about the Stout game. I don't know much about their team, but our MWC rep RC looks like they are ready to go. Good luck at Stout!
Yeah Red - Yeah Hawks
Wouldn't it be nice for the MWC to send TWO WIAC teams home this weekend?! I'm rooting for the Ripon women to knock off Stout and (of course) my Viking men to get some revenge against Stevens Point.
Go REDHAWKS!!
Congratulations to Grinnell College and to Marie Opsal-Lister who was just named assistant coach for the women's basketball program. This will be a great addition to the coaching staff and the community. Marie graduated from Grinnell in 2003 and brings lots of experience and great attitude to the program.
Shadow Lives! :-)
Saw a very promising Grinnell team last night in a scrimmage with Coe. Great quickness, very agressive inside which could help make up for the lack of height. I think this team will compete for a spot in the conference tourney this year!
find me a bigger limb, wouldya? :o
check one two, check one two
Sorry, I'm trying to see how this picture thing works...
Technolgically challenged,
Scottie
Anything going on, on this board....No....okay.....bye....will check back in a couple of months....
The Viking women are looking pretty good. They had a good win against IC earlier this year (right before IC knocked off number 1 Millikin). They have a big test at home against the Ripon Red Hawks. Best of luck!
Confrence is starting to take shape now knowing what teams are doing against confrence teams
Ok, I am from carroll but have yet to see the girls play. If anyone has seen them this year what are your thoughts? Think they will win the tourny?
I haven't seen them play, but based on the score from the LU game last night, Carroll is still not quite good enough to contend. I don't suppose you can really judge a team by one poor (or for that matter one good) performance. But, this is a team that went 8-15 (7-9 conference) last year. While they will be in the MWC tourney, I don't think they have the ability to make a complete turn-around and win the conference this year. It is still a two team race - Ripon v. Lawrence.
Nice last second Regional win for Grinnell against Iowa Conference Loras last night on a well designed play that caught everyone by surprise. Bowen canned a lay up with .3 seconds left!
Grinnell played LU to within 6 at Larry last weekend so we know they can play with the best in the conference. They have struggled a bit lately, but last nights game hopefully signals a trend!
Congratulations to the Carroll College Lady Pioneers!!! Midwest Conference Champions, and making history!!! What a great showcase of Women's Basketball in Waukesha this weekend. You deserve it Pios!!!
21-4 and counting... MWC Champs!!!
Heading to St. Louis for the NCAA Tournament, Good Luck!!!
Go Pios!!!
Congratulations again to the Carroll College Lady Pioneers on their first round win in the NCAA tournament against Calvin College.
22-4 WOW!!!
What a total team effort!
GO PIOS!!!!!
-
What happened to CC?????
Way yo go LFC!!! Great start to the non-conference season.
Keep up the good plays for the conference season...and those 3's!!! :o :o
MSOE/St. Norbert joined in progress: St. Norbert up 10-2, about 15:30 left in 1st half.
Halftime: St. Norbert 42, MSOE 13.
MSOE's Chappell getting her points, but very little support to this point. Boatload of turnovers are further hurting the cause. St. Norbert's White had 14 first-half points.
Just shy of 10 minutes left now: St. Norbert 59, MSOE 29.
(MSOE's Guthrie stepping it up a bit offensively).
Final: St. Norbert 78, MSOE 48.
MSOE's Chappell held to well below her scoring average. Guthrie had 30 points, but the Raiders appeared to be overmatched (only 7 players available). St. Norbert outshot MSOE 46% to 24% from the field.
Congrats to LFC on their #17 ranking, highest ever for the foresters...let's have a great tourney! :)
First off, Congratulations to LFC on the great season that they are having, they do deserve all of the credit that they are receiving, but I do believe that Carroll is also deserving of some credit. Last year, it took all the way until the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament to prove that that they were a legitimate top 25 team and to get d3hoops to recognize them. Now this year, they sit at 18-3, 13-1 in conference (a better record than last year) with NO recognition once again. Let me make this official they are a top 25 team, in addition, Crystal Hoewisch, a junior pre-season All-American has made the d3hoops team of the week TWICE and another junior, Kim Wickert, just made it last week. Therefore, this shows their balance and ability to have some of the top athletes in the nation, but yet NO team recognition. Anyway... this team deserves national recognition, stay tuned for additional proof.
What's the win on Carroll's schedule that screams out "TOP 25 TEAM"?
I don't think it takes ONE win to be put in the top 25, how about the 18 that they have won, and two of the 3 losses were to top 25 teams. Your point is taken, although if you look at the schedule they have beat some tough teams i.e. Eau Claire, who has beat some of the teams who are in the poll , not to mention the other top teams in the MWC. Wouldn't you think their record at least warrants others receiving votes or some recognition. Also remember that as Calvin sits at #2, Carroll was the team that knocked them out in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year, in which both teams rosters are still pretty much the same.
I just saw the regional rankings, congratulations to LFC at #1 and the Carroll College Lady Pioneers at #4 in the Central region, one of the toughest regions in the nation! Good press for the MWC! Also, good win against the Redhawks last night, Pios!
GREAT TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL AT LAKE FOREST COLLEGE. LOOK FORWARD TO AN EXCELLENT CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY. HOPE TO SEE BOTH CARROLL AND LAKE FOREST ADVANCE TO NCAA BERTH!
GO FORESTERS!!!
Hello MWC fans,
Congratulations to Carroll and Lake Forest on receiving NCAA bids. Regular IWU supporter here.
Here's a bit of what Carroll can look for: IWU lost two post players (one before the season started and one after two games), and so the team is very guard-oriented. The usual starting lineup comprises four guards. Top scorers are Mallory Heydorn at 16.9 ppg, Sarah Bull at 15.7, and Claire Sheehan at 13.6. Other major players include posts Thea Rogers, Crystal Dye, Colleen Caplice, and Becky Kiverts, and backup guards Tasha Gaston-Bell, Kerri Gravlin, and Elyse Sanchez. Scoring is usually quite balanced, with 4-6 players in double figures. The Titans like the press and do it effectively.
Anything you can tell us about Carroll? Looking forward to Friday!
Here's a link to tournament information on the IWU website:

Good luck to all teams, and safe travel to all.
Carroll vs. IL Wesleyan on deck:
Carroll up 18-17 midway thru 1st half on IL Wesleyan--Titans' Bull has 3 fouls already.
Halftime: Carroll 38, IL Wesleyan 32. Titans' Heydorn and Pioneers' Wickert and Hoewisch having good scoring games thus far. Pioneers also hit two 3's. Titans' Bull still has 3 fouls.
Just over 15 minutes left in 2nd: Carroll 49, IL Wesleyan 34. (Pioneers out of the gate hot in 2nd).
Over 12 minutes left in 2nd half: Carroll 57, IL Wesleyan 36. (Pioneers are hitting virtually everything they're putting up this half.)
Carroll 86, IL Wesleyan 59. Final. (Have to wonder how much closer this would have been if the Titans' M Heydorn had been 100%). Pioneers' Wickert and Hoewisch had great scoring games tonight.
Congratulations to Carroll. Sitting at home by the radio it sounds like the Pioneers played a near-perfect game. IWU coach Mia Smith said she really doesn't know what happened yet; she felt that she had a good game plan but it just wasn't executed well. Mallory Heydorn had a very good game (19 points)--I don't she could have made the difference tonight at full strength. Carroll was the better team tonight. Good luck tomorrow!
Heard Carroll lost to Luther tonight.
Congrats to Lake Forest and Carroll for making it to the 2nd round of the NCAA dance! Hope to see you both back there next year! Wow, what a season...
I would also like to congratulate Lake Forest and Carroll on making it to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament. Both did a great job of representing the MWC. Also, a special congratulations to Crystal Hoewisch of Carroll College for being named MWC player of the year. Great season Pios, can't wait until next year!
Wow! Big news in the MWC today. Amy Proctor retires from Lawrence:

Anybody see the lady bucs play UWM in the exhibition game friday night?
Congrats to Carroll's Crystal Hoewisch for being named to the d3hoops.com 1st team All-America! She continues to amaze and we all can't wait for another great season! Also congrats to Carroll and Lake Forest for being named in the pre-season top 25 polls, bringing some more national recognition to the MWC along with Hoewisch!
Good Luck to all MWC teams as play opens this weekend.
Lawrence won new coach Walsh's debut at Lawrence in a rout of Clarkson 73-45. They then lost a close one to host North Central 61-59. Anyway, good start to the season. I think LU has a good mix of veteran leaders and a promising group of freshman.
Congrats to LU for getting their first conference win over Knox yesterday. Although the beginning of the season appeared promising, LU has fallen on hard times recently. I think they are hurting from the loss of the on-the-floor leadership provided by guard Jenny Stoner who has been out with a wrist injury. Hopefully, she'll come back soon and LU can make a push at the end of the season.
Don't you mean "Tall" Jenny Stoner.........................
Since this seems to be the place for congratulations... Congrats to Allison Grubbs on her 3 team all decade selection.
I'll add another congrats. Clearly, it's been a tough transition season for LU, but sophomore Caresse Reiland provided a bright spot yesterday by posting a triple double in LU's 66-51 loss to Monmouth. 16 points, 17 boards, and a school record 10 blocks. Story here. (http://www.lawrence.edu/athletics/wbasketball/gamerecaps/0708_mc2.html)
End of an era...Congrats Coach Slaats on a great season and an extraordinary 22 year run at Lake Forest!
You will be missed on the court...
You Lake Forest fans get a good coach in T Tills. I saw the NAthCon Tournament Semi-Final and she and the Cougar team were only a missed lay-up away from a berth in the Final. (Between '06-07 and '07-08, Concordia-Chicago improved greatly.)

MIDWEST CONFERENCE HISTORY BOOK: NO ORDINARY CONFERENCE
George Drake, a former Midwest Conference student-athlete and 1956 Grinnell College graduate, has culminated a project he calls "a labor of love" with the completion of the 100-page soft cover book No Ordinary Conference, an introspective history of the Midwest Conference. The Midwest Conference office is making the book available to the general public at a discounted price via the Order Form linked below for a limited time only (a small number of copies may be available at full price after the ship date). Orders are expected to ship in September.
Drake, who remains a professor at his alma mater, teamed with 2001 Grinnell grad John Aerni to provide a unique look at the league's history through interviews with Midwest Conference student-athletes and unprecedented access to league minutes.
No Ordinary Conference includes the accounts of numerous student-athletes and chronicles over 80 years of history from the league's formation through the men's and women's conference unification and beyond. No Ordinary Conference also features a 34-page photo gallery of some of the conference's all-time great athletes, coaches and administrators.

I have to admit I feel bad for Coach Gluckman (New WBB Coach for Grinnell). It will extremely difficult to be successful after getting a team who was middle of the pack w/o the highest scoring player in the conference the past four years. Hannah Wolf was an incredible all-around player who was the main reason for the wins that GC has had in the past four years. To lose her will be a frustrating start to Gluckman's head coaching career.
Lots of turnover in the coaching ranks this season... Marc Heidorf chosen to lead Lawrence, Knox Tabs Emily Cline As New Head Coach, Grinnell Names Kate Gluckman New Women's Basketball Coach and Tamlyn Tills Named Women's Basketball Coach At Lake Forest. Who's got the best shot at succeeding in their first year?
If anyone's interested in the D-III regional volleyball tournaments, I have a fairly extensive blog (http://uwoshvball.wordpress.com/) that covers the St. Thomas (http://uwoshvball.wordpress.com/2008/11/11/st-thomas-regional-guide/) and Oshkosh (http://uwoshvball.wordpress.com/2008/11/11/oshkosh-regional-guide/) (where SNC will be) regionals. It's not bad in national terms, either. Stop by and tell me what you think.
What is the report on the Lady Scots this year? Are they going to be able to rise a couple nothes in the conference?
WarHens 75 Red Hens 66. Sorry but I'm not much into the "lady" versions of mascot names. Nice effort by Ripon though, unfortunately Whitewater refused to miss free throws down the stretch or this one might have had a different ending.
Looks like the Carroll women are not rebuilding, only reloading. They had a great win over #11 ranked University of Chicago yesterday in Waukesha. I'm sure the young team learned a lot in their early defeat against Lakeland. This will be a fun team to watch!
Congrats to SNC Coach Connie Tilley - as she approaches her 500th win, the school named the court for her at the Schuldes Sports Center.
She will be just the 15th NCAA coach to reach that milestone.
Seewald's ACL injury is a huge loss for Carroll. Will they be able to fight for the conference championship without her? I'm not so sure, she's such a huge asset to that perimeter. Losing her takes away a lot of Carroll's firepower from the 3-pt line.

Here's news on a prep player headed Lake Forest's direction:

("Other college choices" section)
I recently saw on the Grinnell College women's basketball website a blog that mentioned incoming freshmen recruits for the Lady Pioneers expected to arrive on campus this coming fall. Those players reportedly to be coming to Grinnell are Toluwa Alabi (Nigeria), Michelle Briggs (Monterey, CA), Liz Burton (West Des Moines), Kelly Clarke (Eureka Springs, AR), Karen Gogins (Roseville, MN), Erica Tharp (Joy, IL), and Kelly Zucker (Phoenix, AR). This is by far the largest class of incoming freshmen (7 total) recruited to play women's basketball at Grinnell as far as my memory can recall. It will be interesting to see what Kate Gluckman's first recruiting class looks like and it will be interesting to see how this young class jells with last year's nice class of freshmen that represented former coach, Andy Hamilton's, last recruiting class which Coach Gluckman inherited.
With some additional research, I was able to learn that Michelle Briggs is a 6'3" post player who put up very good scoring (about 14 per game as far as I can tell) and rebounding numbers (about 9 per game) for Santa Catalina H.S. in the next to smallest classification in California and Liz Burton at 6'1" was a double-double (scoring 15 and rebounding 10 per game) girl for large class Valley H.S. in Iowa. Those two players will provide the needed height in the post that typically was missing game in and game out for the Lady Pioneers last winter that will provide solid defense and rebounding along with easy low post baskets that were so hard to come by last season in the form of offensive stick backs and set low post plays. There presence on the court should be extremely important for the progress of this team if Coach Gluckman is to establish a foundation for the program to succeed in her tenure.
Although I was not able to determine a lot of information about other players that Gluckman has recruited in for next season, it would appear that Kelly Clarke of Eureka Springs, AR, and Erica Tharp of Westmer H.S. in Joy, IL, would be the "sharp shooting 3-point specialists" that seem to be attracted to Grinnell College in both the men's and women's basketball programs. Those two players are likely to be potential scorers in the rotation this coming winter that will be needed to provide team depth and offense lost by the graduation of Jody Watkins.
Last year's freshmen were led by starting post player, Meg Huey (Valley H.S., West Des Moines, IA) and the first player off the bench in combo guard Ashley Jeannin (Basehor-Linwood H.S., Bonner Springs, KS). These two players showed lots of promise last season as the season progressed. Huey proved to be a very reliable defender and rebounder with good ballhandling skills for a post player. Jeannin showed very good passing and defensive skills combined with solid ballhandling skills and improved 3-point shooting skills by season's end. Another freshmen from last season, Sara Hoffman (Lyons Township H.S., Western Springs, IL), showed solid potential as a wing forward with her 6'0" frame highlighted by her strong rebounding skills and mid-range scoring ability. These three girls, along with the young class of incoming recruits, could prove to be the foundation of a good team in the years ahead for Coach Gluckman.
Finally, with veteran returnees in sharp shooter and lone returning senior, Jessica Shotts, along with juniors Brianna Gallo (defensive standout guard), Mallory Scharf (forward), and Jessica Vaverka (forward), the mix of youth and experience could allow the Lady Pioneers to make a move out of the conference bottom third in 2009-2010. Despite a 4-19 overall record (3-13 in conference), this program has a chance to improve in the next couple of years. The size, athleticism, and skill of the players coming into the program is an improvement from what has been the case in the past. I don't expect a team that has 11 freshmen and sophomores to win a lot of games this winter. That just does not happen. However, the talent in the program is improving and a conference record of 6-10 and an overall record of 10-13 is attainable in the coming season. That type of success will be the foundation for improved play in the next two or three years as well. I think that it is possible for the Lady Pioneers to challenge for a MWC tournament berth in a couple of years, too, based on the type of athletes that have been recruited into the program.
After completing some additional internet research regarding some facts related to the incoming freshmen class of Grinnell College recruited by Coach Kate Gluckman, I have learned the following information:
Michelle Briggs, 6'3" post from Santa Catalina H.S. in Monterey, CA, averaged 16.6 points per game and 14.1 rebounds per game according to the Monterey Herald News Online.
Liz Burton, 6'1" post from Valley H.S. in West Des Moines, IA, averaged 8.1 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union website.
Karen Gogins, 5'9" combo guard from Roseville H.S. in Roseville, MN, averaged 7.4 points per game, 1.5 rebounds per game, and 1.0 assists per game according to MaxPreps website.
Erica Tharp, 5'5" combo guard from Westmer H.S. in Joy, IL, averaged 15.7 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game according to the Lincoln Trail News.
As mentioned earlier, Coach Gluckman's first recruiting class combined with key returnees from last season such as senior Jessica Shotts (wing guard); juniors Jessica Vaverka (forward), Mallory Sharf (forward), and Brianna Gallo (point guard); and sophomores Meg Huey (forward), Ashley Jeannin (combo guard), and Sara Hoffman (wing guard) give the Lady Pioneers a chance to develop into a solid team in the next couple years while evolving into a potentially competitive team in the MWC in the years ahead. From top to bottom, this team will be vastly improved next season with better size, skill, and athleticism. Although it is to early to tell how good this team can become, the fact that Grinnell College has some legitimate size on the roster and improved athleticism and skill through out its roster indicates that improvements will be forth coming.
Good luck to the Grinnell College Lady Pioneers in the 2009-2010 basketball season.
Now, the fun starts with today representing the first day of practice. Also, for many D-3 colleges, one month from today represents the opening game of the actual regular season. Thank goodness basketball has arrived. I just love it. Go, Grinnell College!!!
Yes it sounds like Grinnell has some nice players coming, but I don't see them moving up in the standings all that much this year. St. Norb and Ripon will still dominate because of their strong post players. Carroll and Beloit will be near the top, as usual.

I definitely agree with you from the perspective that the current addition of Lady Pioneers from Grinnell will be extremely young. However, Grinnell has a probable chance of improving this season with a reasonable goal of winning 6 games in the MWC as a reasonable goal for this season. To win those 6 conference games, Grinnell would need to beat Knox both at home and on the road, defeat Lawrence at home, and split with Monmouth, Lake Forest, and Illinois College. I believe that is possible and achieving those victories would be a step in the right direction given the youthfulness of the team and the potential of that youth two and three years down the road.
Grinnell College's 2009-2010 roster is now online. That website is as follows:
http://www.grinnell.edu/athletics/wbasketball/roster/
Carroll's got their roster up: http://athletics.carrollu.edu/sports/roster.asp?teamid=353
Is Seewald healthy this year?
Marquette 102 Beloit 30. Two D1 exhibition games in recent years with almost identical results. The Lady Bucs may want to look for a D2 opponent in the future or simply not schedule exhibition games.
Yikes! That's as lopsided a score as UW Madison's rout of UW Oshkosh on Sunday. I agree with you Roop... I don't quite understand what Beloit gets out of this match-up every year. Maybe a little bit of publicity for their program - they say that any publicity, good or bad, is publicity! But I doubt the players look forward to this game every year. MWC teams are only allowed one scrimmage every season - why waste it on a game vs a DI team?
In a way I can understand the 105-28 (or whatever it was) thrashing UW-Milwaukee gave them as they only dressed 6. The rest of the team was playing in the MWC volleyball tournament at the time and they only had 1 starter available I believe. This time they should have been at full strength but didn't do any better.

After watching the Lady Pioneers of Grinnell play two games in their Tip-Off tournament this weekend earning a 3rd place finish with a second day victory over Martin Luther College on Saturday, I believe that Coach Gluckman's 2009-2010 team has a solid chance to win at least 10 games this winter (they are now 2-1 to date). This represents a great improvement over last season's team that went 4-19 overall and 3-13 in MWC play.
The team has added some very solid freshmen post players in Michelle Briggs (6'3") and Liz Burton (6'1") to go with returning power forwards Meg Huey and Jessica Vaverka. Jessica Shotz looks to be a real scoring weapon again from the perimeter. The backcourt looks solid with point guard Ashley Jeannin who demonstrated good leadership, ball handling, and defensive skills. Other solid contributers in the back court are returners Brianna Gallo and Sara Hoffman along with freshman, Karen Goggins.
The Lady Pioneers are as balanced of a team with respect to post play, high-low play, and perimeter play as I have seen the team over the last several years. I don't believe that they are a solid enough team to challenge for a berth in the MWC tournament just yet. However, they will be a difficult opponent and a challenge in every conference game this year in my opinion. That is a welcomed change and it represents the start of a greatly improved overall program.
After watching the Lady Pioneers play again this weekend against Beloit and Ripon, I am again impressed with the potential of the team, not only this season as they grow their team chemistry, but in future years as this team attempts to become a top tier MWC team. Last season, Beloit and Ripon each blew the Lady Pioneers out twice handing the team four losses. This weekend, the Lady Pioneers defeated Beloit 76-66 and lost to Ripon by just 62-55 (the Ripon game could have easily been a Grinnell win and I think it would have been if the Pioneers starting point guard, Ashley Jeannin, had not gotten in foul trouble).
Grinnell continues to impress me with their front court of Michelle Briggs, Meg Huey, Liz Burton, and Jessica Vaverka. In addition, the team is getting good play from its starting backcourt of Jeannin, Brianna Gallo, and Jessica Shootz. Shootz is playing with a lot of confidence offensively and Jeannin and Gallo are doing a great job of defending, pushing the ball, and making good decisions with the ball. The team's weakness is lack of dependable depth on its bench in the backcourt with only Karen Goggins as a reliable alternative at this time. I believe that Sara Hoffman can evolve into a good role player if given a chance which does not seem to be the case at this time.
As I have said previously, I believe that Grinnell is still a year away from really challenging for a spot in the conference tournament. But, I do believe that the Lady Pioneers will win the games they should win and earn some upset wins along the way just as they did this weekend against Beloit. Grinnell's combination of size in the front court allows the team to be tough to score against and the ability to score in a variety of ways without simply relying on perimeter shooting as was the case in the past will eventually pay off for the team in the weeks ahead for this season and in future seasons as well.
I believe that Grinnell has a chance to win more MWC games than they lose. That will be a real change in this program and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
Lake Forest had a big weekend, Although both were home games. They beat Carroll on Friday and upset St. Norbert on Saturday, both games by a total of 5 points. It will be hard to go to Carroll and St. Norbert and get two more wins later in the year. Lake Forest looks to be a contender this year if their guards continue to play hard.
Carroll had a tough weekend, also losing to Illinois College.
Caroll is a good team, poorly coached. Two of the best players, Seawald and Haywish did not even start.
The coach was sitting most of the game and you could tell the players are not getting it done for her. Poor game management cost them, bottom line, new coach, winning season. Anyone thinking of transfering?
As an alum of Carroll, I felt the need to reply to the previous post. I think you need to get your facts straight before you point fingers. I do know that the Coach was ill the entire weekend. As for Seewald and Hoewisch (Note: Correct spelling!) starting or not, did they play most of the minutes? You are right, this is a good team, and I'm very excited to see what January and February bring for this talented group!
Go Pios!
Looking at how the season has gone thus far, there's a few early surprises: Illinois College winning three tough match-ups to start the seaosn, Carroll falling to 0-2 and not playing well overall, and Lawrence finally winning a game.
Should be an interesting January and February. Can Carroll pick up the intensity? Can Ill College keep winning? Will Lawrence get another victory, possibly a conference victory?
This is old news (December 29th), but any word on Ripon's gym and how that will effect their upcoming home game(s)?

I can't believe this isn't posted yet:
http://www.ripon.edu/news/2009-10/storzer_closure_122809.htm
The Storzer Center at Ripon had 8 FEET of water in the basement over break. They are moving games to other sites. Wednesday's game against Rockford will be played at Marian.
(from the mens MWC board)
Illinois College seems to be slipping a bit with losses to Beloit and Ripon this weekend (although they were both away games). Meanwhile St. Norb, Ripon, Carroll and Lake Forest all walk away 2-0 this weekend.
Is Carroll finally playing at the level they should be?
Lake Forest seems to be the cream of the crop in conference this year.

Grinnell better start to pick it up if they want to win more games than losses in conference. 1-5 isn't cutting it right now.

Grinnell will not win more games than they lose this season. The door for this opportunity has closed to them while having let some "winnable" games slip away this season. This fact is a clear sign of youth as this team is relying on freshmen and sophomores in to many positions and in to many important leadership roles. I do believe that Grinnell's women are making positive improvements to the team based on playing skill and roster make up. But, that youthfulness continues to cost them positive possessions during games ultimately leading to games lost that were winnable. This team is still probably a year away from making a "statement" about their improvement that reflects wins. Never the less, the future is bright at Grinnell College in women's basketball when so many young players are contributing to the team's efforts.
It looks like St. Norb, LF and Ripon are locks for the MWC Conf tournament. It's going to be a fight for the fourth spot between Ill Col and Monmouth. I give the edge to Ill Col at this point because they've got Knox twice, Lawrence and Grinnell to end their season (all winnable games). It'll be very tough for Carroll to get in because their remaining 4 out of 5 games are against the top 4 teams.
My seeds:
1. LF
2. Ripon
3. St Norb
4. Ill Col
LF goes to the NCAAs with an auto bid, no Pool C bid for any other team.
Should be a good weekend of basketball. Predictions? Comments?
Three Ripon fans get the 'ol heave-ho at the championship game. Pretty rowdy crowd all game.
UWSP gets the top seed, but SNC gets to host since UWSP's men are home and have priority.
UWSP vs. Minnesota-Morris
SNC vs. Calvin
SNC women trailed much of the first half, but now are threatening to put Calvin away. It's 47-37 with 13:13 to go. CC was up 33-31 at the half.
I thought the Clavin fans were great...showed a lot of spirit in support of their Knights. Could not say the same about their coach...who bitched to the refs all night...he even took a timeout in the second half to bitch at them (and never addressed his team during the same timeout).
He was quoted in the GB Press this morning with "I'll just let that one go" when asked how he thought SNC played. Not showing much class in defeat
Kudos to the "Green Knights' for their strong comeback after being in the hold, 16 - 4, early in the first half.
Take care of the Pointers tonite!!http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20100306/GPG020102/3060588/1225/GPG02
Nagan named Lawrence Interim Women's Basketball Coach
3.17.2010 |Women's Basketball
APPLETON, Wis.-- Assistant Coach Dennis Nagan has been named the Lawrence University Interim Head Women's Basketball Coach, Director of Athletics Mike Szkodzinski announced March 17.
Nagan, who joined the Lawrence staff before the 2009-10 season, takes over for Marc Heidorf, who was dismised after two seasons. Heidorf compiled a 3-43 record with the Vikings.
"We are excited that Dennis has taken the opportunity to lead our Women's Basketball program," Szkodzinski said. "With Dennis' knowledge of the current players, the players that we are currently recruiting and the overall program, we believe this will provide the continuity the women's basketball team needs to keep it moving forward in a successful manner."
Assistant Coach Kelly O'Keef, who has been with the Vikings for the past two seasons, also will remain on the staff, Szkodzinski said.
A native of Kaukauna, Wis., Nagan has been coaching women's basketball for nearly three decades. Nagan began coaching in 1981 at the middle school level and has coached both high school and AAU teams.
Before coming to Lawrence, Nagan served as an assistant coach at De Pere High School and helped the Redbirds to WIAA State Tournament berths in 2008 and 2009. Nagan also has worked with teams at Appleton East High School, Bay Port High School and Appleton Xavier High School.
So they gave the other guy one year of recruiting (after inheriting a team of 7 kids), watched him make the squad a little more competetive in a year, then the axe? I feel bad for the players. More than likely 3 coaches in 4 years.
Ripon College Names Julie Johnson New Athletic Director
April 22, 2010
RIPON, Wis. – Ripon College is proud to announce Julie Johnson as the institution's new athletic director, effective at the end of the 2009-10 academic year. The current athletic director, Bob Gillespie, will remain Ripon's head coach for both baseball and men's basketball, and an instructor in the exercise science department. Gillespie has served as athletic director since 1992.
Johnson becomes the first female athletic director in Ripon College history and will continue to serve as head coach of the Red Hawk women's basketball team. She has been assistant athletic director since 2002.
"The College owes a debt of gratitude to Bob for his leadership of the athletics department during the past 18 years," said Gerald Seaman, vice president and dean of faculty. "Julie is a charismatic and passionate advocate of Red Hawk athletics, and we're confident our programs will continue to flourish under her leadership."
Johnson was named to the Ripon College Hall of Fame in 2005 for her commitment to the education of students through the classroom and athletic competition. This school year is Johnson's 20th at Ripon College, where she has become the school's winningest women's basketball coach with a career record of 272-199.
"I'm looking forward to this new opportunity and the challenges it will provide," said Johnson. "I hope to bring the same focus and dedication to this role as I expect from my players on the court."
Johnson came to Ripon in 1990 from South Dakota State University where she received her master's degree in exercise physiology while serving as an assistant women's basketball coach. Johnson also earned her bachelor of science degree in health, physical education and recreation at Dakota State University in 1988. A four-year starter on the Trojan's women's basketball team, Johnson was a three-time all-conference selection and the Dakota Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player in 1987 as well as the NAIA District XII Player of the Year.
Although I expect the MWC to still be dominated by the likes of St. Norbert, Ripon, Lake Forest, and Carroll, I do expect Grinnell College to make some strides as a women's basketball team moving up into the top half of the conference this coming winter just as we have witnessed the GC football team to do this fall.
GC was dominated by many young players a year ago with only one senior in Jessica Shotts (a very good shooter who had some shortcomings). GC will return their backcourt in Brianna Gallo and Ashley Jeannin along with a very tall and improving front court in Michelle Briggs, Megan Huey, Jessica Vaverka, and Elizabeth Burnett. If Coach Gluckman can find some backcourt help for Gallo and Jeannin from newcomers Rebecca Degroot, Aby Jaeger, and Patty Murphy-Geiss, to go with some returning help all through the line-up from Tolu Alabi, Kelly Clarke, Mallory Scharf, and Sara Hoffman, the Lady Pioneers of GC might just be a team that other MWC opponents would prefer not to see on their "upcoming" schedule.
Times are changing at GC as are being demonstrated by GC's football, volleyball, and soccer teams.
What is going on with the other MWC women's basketball teams as the first day of practice is now just 11 days away?

I assume that Simpson College will continue to be the main challenger for Coe College and all of the Iowa Conference until someone knocks them down from their title perch. Would you agree?
The MWC doesn't have any exhibition games against DI schools this year (at least not any that I can find). Doesn't bode well for the conference.

I'm not sure I understand how. Before the 2008(?) season I watched St. Norbert play Wisconsin. The Badgers won that game something like 92-28 and I don't think the Green Knights had a made field goal in the second half. Sure St. Norbert had the great experience of getting to play in the Kohl Center but it wasn't a game at all. It's nice to see a D3 school get the D1 treatment for one night but I don't see how having an exhibition against a D1 school as an indicator of success.
I don't get it either. I'm guessing the inference is that no D-I school thought any MWC team worthy of inviting for an exhibition game. At least that's all I can think of.
I don't think jam gets how scheduling works.
I do understand how scheduling works.
d3 schools that are scheduled for d1 exhibition games gain a lot, including exposure, money, and experience. the fact that no mwc team was scheduled against a d1 team shows exactly how the conference is viewed on a larger scale. meanwhile, the wiac has multiple programs playing d1 exhibition games this preseason. the wiac is a considerably stronger conference, and that shows in the scheduling.
Or it's more likely that MWC programs simply don't care to play D-I exhibitions.
The WIAC is a better conference because they have better players, not because they play D-I exhibitions. The WIAC was a better conference 10 years ago too, before exhibition games with D-I teams were allowed. And if they stopped doing D-I exhibitions tomorrow, the WIAC would still be a better conference. One might be an indicator of another, but you're implying causality which just doesn't make sense.

Exposure ... ehh, I guess. It's fleeting. You can use it briefly in the recruiting process I guess but if you're best selling point is a 40 point beating from a D-1 you're in trouble.
Money? How much money do you think teams get for playing UW-Milwaukee or Green Bay? Even a Marquette or Wisconsin. I think I can find out but I'm curious to think what people think it actually is.
Experience- If you mean to warm up and play in a facility then, again, it's fleeting. It's a nice thing to go through.
Honestly though does it really matter all that much? I just think these things are blown way out of proportion. The fact that no MWC school plays one means less than nothing about their teams or their conference.
D3 schools are very similar to NAIA schools. It is very rare that NAIA schools play D-I schools. Agreed? It really makes very little sense, in my opinion, for D3 schools to play D-I schools either unless the team is really a very high quality D3 team. Those high quality schools are always changing, too.
Now, what makes sense to me is for D3 schools to occasionally play some D-II schools and for D-II schools to play D-I schools. In the end, however, whether or not a D3 school plays some one in another division is irrelevant. The mission of D3 schools, as it has been stated numerous times on this Board and its threads, is completely different that D-I and D-II. So, who really cares if MWC schools are playing D-I schools or D-II schools, for that matter? I sure don't.
Time to get this forum moving again.
The first weekend of conference play is in. Anybody have any thoughts?
Based on the results I have seen so far it looks similar to last season.
I agree. Not a lot of change in how things will look from last year to this year based on what happened this past weekend.
I was not in attendance to watch Grinnell College in their first MWC road games up in Wisconsin. However, I do know that the team is "running on fumes" right now with a lack of team depth and active roster members as they are missing some very important players who will help this team be competitive in the weeks ahead due to a combination of factors. Senior guard, Brianna Gallo, apparently is unable to play for the remainder of the December schedule because of an acute ankle injury. The team hopes to have her back in January after some rest and recovery time. Two starters and very key players from one season ago in juniors Ashley Jeannin (guard) and Meg Huey (forward) are studying abroad during this fall semester and their return is anxiously being awaited by the team in January as well. Finally, Mallory Scharf, a team captain, was not in uniform this past weekend due to the loss of a love one. However, she is expected back to the team this week.
With the graduation of Jessica Shotz, four of last season's starters at GC are not playing right now and that makes things extremely difficult for Coach Gluckman. However, in the mean time, some valuable experience for some underclassmen is being gained and, when everyone who is expected to be back to the team is playing in January again, GC could be a much different looking team who has the ability to win some games given the team's over all size. With only two more games on the team's schedule before the Christmas Break, the Lady Pioneers will sneak up on some people in 2011 is my prediction. The only games scheduled so far by the Lady Pioneers in December that will be a critical loss to GC will be if Knox can go to GC and get a tough road win while the Lady Pioneers roster is short handed. GC losing to St. Norbert, Ripon, and, likely, Carroll next weekend, all on the road, are not any big losses to the team based on expectations. Perhaps, the GC ladies can get some wins in 2011 when 10 of 16 games will be played at home and the team's roster is back to full strength.

Knox College got that critical road win, by one point, at GC last night. This loss hurts GC and this is the first loss of the season that was directly effected by the fact that Brianna Gallo, because of injury, and Ashley Jeannin and Meg Huey, because of studying abroad, were not in uniform. The return to action by these three girls will give the Lady Pioneers a much needed boost starting in January. For now, the ladies from GC need to just keep battling and continue to improve where ever they can. I think that the team will be a tough "out" in the second semester.
Congrats to the Green Knights of SNC on their victory over Bates College in the D3 Hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. One more game Thursday against Kenyon College and then home to resume their MWC conference schedule.
The Lady Pioneers of Grinnell College picked up a good home victory last night by the score of 60-49. The team got its two "study abroad" roster members and starters from one season ago in Meg Huey and Ashley Jeannin back last night in their first action in a game since returning to campus. Jeannin, in particular, helped the team a lot with her leadership at the point guard position looking as though she is ready to take up from where she left off at the end of last season as the team's floor general. Although she did not start, she definitely got "starter minutes" during the game and her presence seemed to steady the Lady Pioneers in this game.
It is important to note that Jessica Vaverka and Tolu Alabi really had excellent games for Grinnell along with a very good outing by senior, Mallory Scharf. Grinnell's defense was extremely active as a team and, at times, the defense was down right good resulting in a lead of 20 points or so before Coach Gluckman began to generously hand out playing time at the end of the game.
The Lady Pioneers just might be a tough out once the second half of this season gets going. Although I doubt that they are a team capable of earning a berth in the conference tournament, it would not surprise me if the team's play doesn't eventually have an effect on who actually makes that tournament. GC's women are a team on the rise.
First Regional Rankings: http://www.d3blogs.com/d3hoops/category/ncaa-stuff/regional-rankings/
GC has done a great job in the second semester and the Lady Pioneers have demonstrated that they are capable of playing with anyone in the conference this season. I believe that Coach Gluckman deserves some credit for getting GC to 8-9 in conference play after starting the season 0-4 in conference play prior to the Christmas Break. Also, the return of Huey and Jeannin from their study abroad opportunities in the fall combined with Gallo and Gogins getting healthy at the same time have helped the Lady Pioneers to a record of 8-5 in MWC play since the Christmas Break ended.
Some credit needs to be given to the great play as well of Briggs and Burton, the team's two primary post players, who have gotten better all season long with Briggs being a legitimate all-conference consideration. Also, despite the late season injury to Vavercka, who should be an all-conference candidate, too, scoring has been balanced all season long with it coming from many areas. Finally, credit needs to be given to the development of Alabi and DeGroot (first year) this season with those two being players that will be relied on more and more beginning next season.
Now, can the Lady Pioneers steal a win Saturday at Lake Forest and end their MWC campaign with a non-losing record for the first time in years. I am sure hoping that they can. Go, Pioneers!!!

Why isn't St. Norbert ranked in the last regional poll? 20-2 record. Good team. I have a hard time believing Wisconsin Lutheran has better numbers than Berts.

WLC has a win over UW-Whitewater which I'm sure is carrying a lot of weight. Too bad the NCAA hasn't posted the SOS numbers for us to look at this week.

Berts Men and Women are both dancing again!
Congrats to SNC and MC for an instant classic! The early word out of Las Vegas is that the only way to stop the Scots next year will be to lock them out of the gym.
New coaches for Beloit...

... and Lawrence.
http://www.midwestconference.org/news/2011/4/13/WBB_0413111503.aspx
With classes starting up later this month for the 2011-2012 academic year regarding most, if not all, MWC schools, has anyone heard whom the new first year and transfer basketball players will be on the MWC women's teams this fall? Very little information has been forthcoming regarding this particular topic so far. Of course, that information likely will become available in the next several weeks. But, it is never to early to ask.
Obviously, it is to early to make predictions for the season regarding standings and MWC tournament qualifiers as this point in time without information regarding roster additions from first years student/athletes and those potential transfers. However, I think it is safe to say that St. Norbert will be the team to beat until someone actually de-thrones them. Monmouth is always tough, too. But, I think Monmouth is definitely a step below St. Norbert while only being just a "small" step above the next group of MWC teams (Carroll, Illinois College, and Lake Forest).
Yet, the team I think that could easily move into that next grouping of MWC colleges this coming winter is Grinnell College. Grinnell was a very tough out for nearly all of the top teams in the MWC beginning in January last season and GC will have some very experienced players returning that includes excellent size and good athleticism at all positions. Coach Gluckman of Grinnell has done a great job of assemblying a very solid and deep roster of players after three full seasons on the job who just might be capable of making a lot of noise this winter in conference play and who, again, likely will be a tough out for all MWC opponents.
In my opinion Ripon, Beloit, and Knox College are all still a long way from challenging the conference's elite teams. Yet, each of those teams are capable of beating a few of the upper teams under some circumstances. Only Lawrence is not a team ready to challenge any one on a regular basis in the MWC. Their conference record is 1-65 over the last four sesaons. A lot of work still needs to happen for Lawrence.
What are your thoughts?
Practice has started for all MWC women's basketball teams as of this past Saturday. Good luck to all of the teams.
If you have any information regarding the teams that could be good pre-season discussion, please, share it with us.
Attached is a link to the pre-season report for the women's basketball team at Grinnell College. I am optimistic that this could be a very intersting season for the Pioneers.

Place School (First Place Votes) Points - 2011-12 Midwest Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Poll
1 St. Norbert (8) 80
2 Monmouth (1) 68
3 Lake Forest 62
4 Carroll 55
5 Ripon (1) 51
6 Illinois C. 42
7 Grinnell 40
8 Beloit 24
9 Knox 19
10 Lawrence 9
No Surprise with St. Norb on top again. They should be able to run the table and go 18-0. I don't see anyone coming close to upsetting them, except possibly for Monmouth. They've got that confusing chaotic 3/4 court zone trap. Very fun to watch when it's clicking, and very difficult to beat.
Ripon gets 1 first place vote? That's random. They're still a year or two away from really competing for 1st place. They could slip into the conference tournament though, in place of Carroll.
And speaking of Carroll, are they ever going to shore up their defense? They could be a contender if they ever learned to play disciplined team defense. The offense is always there for them, but their defense is sloppy.
Lawrence picks up a win. From their website:
"The victory snapped a 31-game winless streak for the Vikings. It was Lawrence's first victory since an 88-68 victory at Silver Lake College on Feb. 15, 2010. It also marked Lawrence's first Midwest Conference victory since a 62-53 victory over Knox on Jan. 19, 2008. Lawrence had gone 62 league games without a victory."
Yikes I didn't realize how long it's been for Lawrence to get a win in conference. And it's not like it's that strong of a conference to begin with. The box score looked ugly. 32 TOs for Knox and 39 for Lawrence. When's the last time you saw a team with 39 TOs win a ball game??
I didn't see the game, but judging from the box score it looks like Knox might be playing a Grinnell-style system. There's 14 players with nearly equal playing time. And they put up 37 three pointers. Wow.
At approximately the half way point of the MWC women's basketball regular season heading into this weekend's MWC action, the standings are currently very interesting. The standings are as follows:
St. Norbert 9-0
Monmouth 6-2
Grinnell College 5-3
Lake Forest College 5-3
Ripon College 5-3
Carroll University 4-4
Illinois College 3-5
Knox College 2-7
Beloit College 1-7
Lawrence Univeristy 1-7
Obviously, St. Norbert is in a class of their own in the conference. Yet, they are definitely capable of dropping a game or two before the season ends. But, there is certainly a "log jam" fighting it out for the 2nd place through 6th place as conference teams begin determining whom will qualify for this season's MWC Post Season Tournament. With five teams at 6-2 through 4-4, the second half of the season will be very compelling to watch.
As a fan of GC, the Pioneers have lost two games that I hope won't come back to "haunt" them as the season ends and those are their two losses to Carroll, each by just two points, where GC led nearly the entire game in Grinnell back in December and led late while falling at Carroll by the game's end. The process for GC qualifying for the MWC post season tournament will require that GC wins all of the games remaining that they should win and getting some wins from those that they find themselves battling for in the standings. They must overcome late game "funks" and close those hotly contested games out better than they have against Carroll.
Further commenting about GC, it appears as though DeGroot, Briggs, and Huey are playing some really outstanding basketball for the team with Jeannin continuing to provide excellent floor leadership. Continued good play by those four and consistency from others is necessary for the team to make its first MWC tournament berth in years.
Great win by GC last night over MC. They were down for much of the game, gritted it out, and got their win. I think we'll see them in conference this year! Nice conversions by Jeanin toward the end of the game, and solid performance throughout by Huey and Briggs.
The Pioneer women's basketball team from Grinnell College had another amazing victory against Monmouth College on Wednesday improving their conference record to 10-5 (sole possession of 3rd place). The team continues to be well balanced with a different player "rising to the occasion" nearly every time the team earns another hard fought victory.
Different people this season have provided the Pioneers with amazing efforts. Senior power forward, Meg Huey, and junior center, Michelle Briggs have been the players who have provided the team with the most consistent play all season long and, in my opinion, both deserve strong consideration for the all-conference team. Sophomore wing forward, Rebecca DeGroot, has shown offensive explosiveness many times during the season. But, the team's senior point guard, Ashley Jeannin, who is primarily known as the team's floor leader who provides solid playmaker skills and is an excellent defender, provided some dramatic play on Wednesday night against Monmouth.
This 60-57 GC win saw an unbelievable six minute scoring effort by Jeannin where she scored the final 12 points for the Pioneers and 10 unanswered points to end the game. With about six minutes remaining in the game, Jeannin began her scoring burst with a jump shot from the free throw line resulting in a score of 51-50 in favor of Monmouth. Monmouth scored 6 unanswered points to take a lead of 57-50. Jeannin followed with 2 three pointers and 4 free throws in the last 3 1/2 mintues or so to help the Pioneers capture the 60-57 win that included over 4 minutes of clock where Monmouth did not score a point demonstrating the Pioneers tremendous defense they have shown time and time again this season. It truly was a dramatic finish.
Go, Pioneers!!! Good luck against Illinois College on Saturday.
Grinnell College had a devastating loss at Illinois College yesterday. The team seems to have trouble finishing closely contested games unless a "miracle" finish is involved. A win against Lake Forest College next Saturday, plus some other tie-breaker requirements, now are necessary for the team to earn a berth in the MWC. Hang in there Pioneers and beat Lake Forest on Saturday. This is now all that you control.
St. Norbert College has earned a regular season MWC championship by defending last season's championship. They will host the conference tournament and likely will get the conference's NCAA tournament bid as well based on the assumption that they will win the tournament this weekend as many expect to happen. St. Norbert will play Carroll in the conference tournament semi-finals. Monmouth is the second place team and they have shown they are definitely "beatable" this season. Monmouth will play Lake Forest in the conference tournament semi-finals and I expect this game to be a real "barn burner." Good luck to all the teams.
I think that it is appropriate to give some concillatory commendation to Grinnell and Ripon who tied for 3rd in the regular season with both Lake Forest and Carroll with all four teams having MWC records of 11-7. The tie breaker procedure was very cruel to Grinnell and Ripon who demonstrated that they were just as good in all phases of season play as the two teams whom also had 11-7 records that advanced to the MWC tournament. Tie breaker rules are never perfect and no one would attempt to state that they are either.
As a fan of Grinnell College and the college's women's basketball team, congratulations to the Pioneers for their outstanding season despite missing out on a conference tournament berth. It was the team's first winning season in conference play since the 2003-2004 season. Grinnell College had as much talent as any team in the conference, with the exception being St. Norbert, and the Pioneers proved that on several occasions this season with their "sweep" of Monmouth as proof of the fact. However, four critical conference losses by a total of nine points (home against Carroll and at Carroll, Illinois College, and Lake Forest), with a win in any of those four losses, kept the team from earning sole possession of 3rd place and a berth in the conference tournament. The Pioneers just had a hard time finishing some of those closely contested games and that cost the team dearly this season. The lack of team depth probably contributed to this fact as much as any thing.
Finally, congratulations to Meg Huey and Ashley Jeannin as they conclude their playing career at the college as extremely important players in the rebuilding of the GC women's basketball program. Both girls were instrumental to the yearly improvement of the program as leaders and players with both leaving their mark on the program statistically rising to career leaders at GC in rebounds (9th by Meg) and assists (6th by Ashley) with both being outstanding defenders and solid team offensive players as well. Those of us that enjoy watching the Pioneers play will miss their intensity, toughness, energy, and skill in the years ahead. However, with great returning players such as Michelle Briggs, Rebecca DeGroot, and Tolu Alabi, complemented by others on the team and with indications that the incoming commitments for next year's first year class will be very talented, the future at Grinnell will continue to be bright with more program success yet to occur. Good luck in the future to Coach Gluckman and the Pioneers of Grinnell College as they improve on this season's success with goals of a MWC championship and more in the years ahead.
Good luck to Monmouth College in their game tonight against the University of Chicago. I don't expect Monmouth to defeat undefeated Chicago. But, I do hope that Monmouth competes against them well enough for the outcome to not clearly be decided by half time with Monmouth "putting a real scare" into the host college. And, that result is potentially a reality if Monmouth can muster its "A-game."
Also, congratulations to the post season award winners from the MWC. Furthermore, as a GC fan, congratulations to Michelle Briggs and Meg Huey for earning 2nd team All-Conference. Both, definitely, deserved the recognition as they were solid performers for the team all season long.
Finally, congratulations to Janelle Groer of Carroll University for earning MWC player of the year. No one else in the conference meant more to her team and performed at as high level all season long as she did. She was Carroll's "go to" player all season long and she produced even with opponents double teaming her and defending her with lot's of help defense. Her ability to score, pass out of double teams to open teammates, and rebound the ball made her a very special player to watch over the last four years.
We've released our list of All-Americans. Congratulations to Camille Marie, who is our first All-American selection from Cornell.

Big coaching update in MWC: After 23 seasons as Ripon College Head Women's Basketball Coach, Julie Johnson will step down from her role to become full-time Athletic Director. There should be some pretty good young coaches applying for this job. And with Julie most likely leading the hiring committee, she will choose her successor well.
And then a not so surprising update: Tara Carr has resigned as the head women's basketball coach at Lawrence University. The new coach will be the sixth women's basketball head coach at Lawrence in eight seasons. Yikes. With the LU AD leading the hiring committee, the next coach will most likely be anther dud. Sad to see LU athletics dept struggle so much with this.

Carroll leaving:
Waukesha—(April 25, 2014)—Carroll University will join the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) as a full member in the 2016-17 academic year. It is anticipated the university will become an associate member for women's lacrosse beginning in 2015-16, one year before full membership in the CCIW begins. Carroll returns to the CCIW after a 22-year absence, bringing the total number of full members in the conference to nine.
"We are delighted to return to the CCIW. It is one of the premier NCAA Division III conferences in the country and is comprised of institutions that are widely recognized for academic excellence," said Doug Hastad, president of Carroll University. "We are especially excited for our student-athletes who will be able to test their skills against some of the finest competition in the country. We look forward to renewing our relationship with these outstanding institutions. It is a proud day for the Carroll family."
Carroll was a member of the CCIW conference from 1955 to 1992. Since then, Carroll has been a member of the Midwest Conference. The announcement marks the first change in full membership since the university left the CCIW after the 1991-92 academic year.
"Joining the CCIW is a significant achievement for our Pioneers Athletic Program," said Joe Baker, athletic director for Carroll University. "Future student-athletes have a lot to look forward to as we also prepare to add men's and women's lacrosse to our sports lineup in fall, and begin renovations on our Van Male Fieldhouse this summer."
Founded in 1846, Carroll University serves an enrollment of 3,539 students and an athletics department that sponsors 20 sports (10 men's and 10 women's). The university is adding men's and women's lacrosse for the 2014-15 season.
"Our office will begin the process of incorporating Carroll into all of our conference schedules starting in 2016-17," CCIW Commissioner Chris Martin said. "We will work to create draft schedules for our athletics directors to review and decide upon as we add an additional game or series."
Currently, the CCIW sponsors 21 sports and will sponsor men's & women's lacrosse beginning in 2014-15. CCIW schools have accounted for 46 NCAA Division III National Championships in its 68-year history.

Maybe this will stir conversation on your site good luck.

The national championship pedigrees of Wash-U, DePauw, and Illinois Wesleyan are well-known, but don't sleep on Illinois College--the Lady Blues have had two winning seasons in a row and bring a bumper crop of height to the Fieldhouse--6 players at 5'11" or 6'. 3 more at 5'10".

Quite the difference from the men. There are four UW schools in the women's ranking, none on the men's side.
Looks like another must-win conference tournament and subsequent road trip for SNC/MWC winner

SNC beats Cornell, finishes conference play 18-0
SNC beats Cornell for the title.
I knew it was bad but I did not realize it was this bad. Over the last ten seasons (2007-2016) Lawrence women are 14-193. In the same span their football team won 16 (and that was a BAD football program).
That's a steaming pile right there.
SNC goes to Cornell and wins the title on the Rams (ewe's?) home court.
Though I suspect many of you already know this the Beloit College women's team is just bad. 38 turnovers to 40 shot attempts is just ugly.

They will still win at least one against Lawrence.
Oh. My. God. Lawrence won a conference game. This has not happened a LOOOOONG time.
Umm, that's not good:

DE PERE -- The St. Norbert College women's basketball team is unable to compete in its next 10 women's basketball games due to a violation of institutional policy stemming from an on-campus alcohol-related incident involving a number of players.
The decision, as decided by the St. Norbert College student judicial review process, suspends the involved students for 10 games. The suspension is effective immediately and will run through Jan. 24.

This decision effectively ends the St Norbert season. The administration may just as well formally end all play for the season as well, as St Norbert was not regionally ranked by the NCAA in last season's final rankings.
Hoopsville will discuss this item first tonight, but this is right up there with the Wheaton (MA) women's soccer team being suspended for the NEWMAC tournament earlier this year because one of the players dressed in "blackface" at a Halloween party with the other teammates accompanying her to the party and attempting to cover it up afterwards.

I don't see a reason to end the season. True, nothing to play for in terms of titles, but the players should still get to play the games coming to them, especially the seniors. And, they can play spoiler, for what that's worth, for the other teams,
As I understand it, it wasn't all of the players, but the team wasn't left with enough to play. I feel bad for the innocent ones who are punished as a result.
Not sure whether they would get a chance to play spoiler. If I were the MWC (thankfully, I'm not!), I would not count ANY games against SNC as conference games, since they will miss so many - would create too unbalanced a competition.
It is the time of the season when managing practices and games around finals and soon-to-be holiday breaks can be difficult, especially as most conferences have begun in-conference games while there are still non-conference battles on tap.
On Thursday's edition of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), Dave chats with a number of coaches who have had significant starts to the season, but are now managing their seasons. How are the highs and lows massaged and how to keep student-athletes focused not only on their studies (and finals), but also the game.
Results at this time of the year will be a factor come the end of the season.
Dave will also discuss, and update if able, the breaking news out of St. Norbert where the women's basketball team has been suspended ten games due to a number of players' actions.

Per what Dan Lukes said on Hoopsville, enough players were suspended for an alcohol-related incident that it doesn't allow for enough players to suit up for games. Thus the games are canceled until those players can return to play - after ten games; at the start of the second semester.
From what Dan said, this does not appear to be a hazing incident. Just underage drinking, most likely, on a campus that have higher standards than your average school. Furthermore, it does appear the drinking was well in access.
The previous three conference games sound like they will be switched to non-conference games. The remaining games, after the ten-games that were canceled, will be switched to non-conference games as well.
The men's side had a similar problem last year with an ineligible player at Grinnell. Makes for a weird conference situation. If the games are changed to non-conference I think that makes the most sense.
LU to look for new coach.
http://vikings.lawrence.edu/sports/wbkb/2017-18/releases/20180122ioad80
On an unrelated note Lawrence forfeited a win earlier in the season due to an ineligible player. Had spent the whole season wondering why the conference website was "off" by a game. They weren't, I was.

So, what's up with SNC this season? Starting 1-4 in conference and 2-10 overall is not what I expected. Hangover from last year's lost season? Injuries?
After 42 seasons - she was hired when Carter was president, and Schuldes/Mulva hadn't been built yet - Connie Tilley is retiring at the end of the season.
Tilley is currently seventh all-time in Division III women's basketball coaching wins. Through Jan. 2, Tilley has a 684-307 career record and led St. Norbert to 18 conference titles, 14 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances and one Final Four in 1985. Four of her basketball teams advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament Sweet 16, most recently in 2003. Tilley is Wisconsin's all-time winningest collegiate women's basketball coach.
Her career record in all sports combined is 1,012-505 for a .667 winning percentage with 24 overall conference titles. In 61 sports seasons, Tilley has had only five records below .500.
https://www.snc.edu/athletics/pressrelease/4871/
Wow. Tilly has been a fixture, and she has impacted a whole lot of other coaches that went on to success.

Time for a marathon!
Thursday, Hoopsville will be on the air for at least nine hours in the 7th Annual Hoopsville Marathon Show.
This year's show will feature coaches, administrators, and many others around Division III to give us a sense of the season to date and what is to come. There is only a month or so left in the regular season, so there is plenty to talk about.
For more information about the show and its impact, click here.
The show's guest list is below with a rough idea of when they were scheduled to appear during the live show.
The marathon is also a chance to fundraise of the show. Many fans of Hoopsville ask often how they can give to the program so we can continue doing our work into the future. In the first few years of the Marathon, the fundraising side was an important aspect. However in the last few years, we have shyed away from fundraising as we tried to find other means to financially run the program. After requests from many, we are do have a few ways fans can contribute.
Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch the entire Marathon show LIVE in the video player above. We will effort to turn around podcast episodes of the entire show. They will be available to the right (after the show is off the air).
Guests appear on the Hoopsville Hotline presented by BlueFrame Technology.
And don't forget to interact with the Dave and guests. You can use the social media option to the right and even email (dave.mchugh@d3sports.com) questions to the show.
When it comes to the game of basketball, we love celebrating not only the student-athletes in Division III, but also those who help carry the game forward sometimes outside of the spotlight.
Sunday on Hoopsville, we celebrate those who have made the game of basketball, especially at DIII, so great. Coaches who continue to excel in different parts of the country and programs who play for more than just themselves.

I share across nearly the entire site to not only be fair, but also because some posters don't frequent other boards ... so I do my due diligence. I don't have the rankings memorized at the time of my sharing. I have barely broken them down at that point ... so I wouldn't be able to say whether an NACC (or any other conference) team was ranked or not.
My thought was more lamenting the state of the conference,
Not your intention on the post. I get why you share it on each page. That makes sense. Just sad that no MWC team is there.

Not your intention on the post. I get why you share it on each page. That makes sense. Just sad that no MWC team is there.
That I can completely understand. Bottom of the conference has to start scheduling better is probably the "easy" answer.
Bottom of the conference needs to GET better. Harder answer, but true.

Champion GLO Back for 2021 With A New Head Coach
[Oshkosh, WI] "Let's GLO" Along with a championship caliber team coming back for the 2021 season so is General Manager Brad Fischer. In 2019 Fischer built a coaching staff and roster that went undefeated and won the GWBA Championship. The GLO will once again feature NCAA Division I basketball stars and former WNBA stars. Opening night will feature the first championship banner raising in the Menominee Nation Arena's short history.
"As General Manager it is my intention to build the best women's basketball team that has ever been assembled in Wisconsin. Despite the relative infancy of the team and our league, we will aggressively pursue the goal of being the best women's basketball team in the country shy of the WNBA."
The Wisconsin GLO is pleased to announce Lauren Busalacchi as the new head coach for the 2021 season. Busalacchi is the women's basketball coach at Ripon College. In 2019 Busalacchi was named Midwest Conference Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.
"I am incredibly excited for Coach Busalacchi to put her stamp on the GLO. She earned a lot of respect from our players in her year as our assistant coach and I think that familiarity and those relationships will allow us to hit the ground running. She has continued to build a championship program at Ripon and is one of the best coaches in the region. I look forward to watching her and her staff mold this team over the course of the summer."
