I'm doing a study on the likelihood of winning a conference regular season championship and the conference post season tournament championship. In the CAC the regular season champion has not won the post season conference tournament very often in the last 10 years.Does anyone know how many teams won both of these championships this past season in their conference?
The CCIW's postseason tournament is only three years old, but in two of those three years the league's champion (Augustana both times) has also gone on to win the tournament. In the inaugural CCIW tournament in 2005-06, league champion Augustana failed to hold home-court advantage and the tournament was won by North Central.
ok Jeff, I'm always a sucker for this kind of trivia, and in past seasons have done a writeup on this exact subject.
Of 42 D3 conferences, 21 had regular season champs go on to win conference tournaments, (the UAA has no Conference tourney)
Those were:
CCC Curry (co champ during regular season)
NAC Elms (Division champ during regular season)
MASCAC Salem State
Sky Farmingdale State (co champ during regular season)
Sunyac Plattsburgh State
NEAC Baptist Bible (co champ during regular season)
MACF King's (Tri champ during regular season)
CC Ursinus
AMCC PSU Behrend
ODAC Guilford
ASC Mary Hardin Baylor (Division winner during regular season)
GSAC Maryville (Tn)
MIAA Hope
PrAC Bethany (co champ during regular season)
CCIW Augustana
MWC Lawrence
MIAC St Thomas
UMAC Northwestern (Minn)
NWC Whitworth
WIAC UW Whitewater
NJAC Richard Stockton (Division winner during regular season
On the other hand, here are those that failed to win the confernce tourney after winning the regular season crown:
GNAC Emerson regular season, Lasell tourney
NESCAC Amherst Regualr season, Trinity touney
Newmac WPI Regular season, Coast Guard tourney
LEC UMass Dartmouth regular season, Rhode Island College tourney
E8 Stevens Tech/ Ithaca cochamps regular season, Nazareth tourney
LL St Lawrence regular season, Clarkson tourney
Cunyac York NY/ Brooklyn co champs regular season, John Jay tourney
Landmark Susquehanna regular season, Scranton tourney
MACC Lycoming regular season, Widener tourney
PnAC Alvernia regular season, Immaculata Tourney
CAC York Pa regula season, St Marys Md tourney
SCAC Centre regular season, Milsaps tourney
USAC Methodist/Ferrum co champs regular season, Averett tourney
NCAC Wooster regular season, Ohio Wesleyan tourney
OAC Capital regular season, Heidelberg tourney
HCAC Defiance regular season, Franklin tourney
NATHC Aurora regular season, Lakeland tourney
SLIAC Webster regualr season, Fontbonne tourney
IIAC Buena Vista regular season, Loras tourney
SCIAC Cal Lutheran/Occidental co champs regular season, Pomona Pitzer tourney
UAA no tourney
It's probably helpful to note how many teams qualify for the tournament in each case.
A note from Around the Nation earlier this year. Note this is, of course, from last season's results.
Seeds who won one-division conferences, in 2006-07
1 seed: Won 19 tournaments
2 seed: Won 5 tournaments
3 seed: Won 4 tournaments
4 seed: Won 4 tournaments
7 seed: Won 1 tournament
Two-division conferences
1 seed: Won 3 tournaments
2 seed: Won 1 tournament
3 seed: Won 1 tournament
hopefan, I think you omitted the WIAC.
Bill -- thanks much - I never go down the west page far enough - i have revised my posts
The MIAA's had a tournament for 17 seasons now, 11 as a 7 team conference, 6 as an 8 team conference. In the first 6 tournaments the regular season champ dominated winning all 6, since 1998 the regular season champ has only won 3 of the 11 tournaments, with 1 tournament being won by the lower seeded co-champ, and 1 by the higher seeded co-champ.
Hope's win in 2008 ended a 6 year run of defeats for the regular season champion.
When I did this analysis in the past, I seem to remember similar results - league champs winning conference tourney about 50% of the time - I would be amazed if any other conference could document a 6 year run of "upset" victors in the in the conference tourneys.....
Hopefan, the NJAC has two divisions, WPU won the Northern Division and Stockton won the Southern and Stockton was the top seed in the Tournament. By being top seed Stockton was the regular season champs of the NJAC, that would make 21 conferences where the regular season and tournament champs were one and the same.
knightstalker - thanks, I'll adjust again -
I think this is right.
6 of 10 tourneys the reg. season champ has won the tourney. Interestingly, when the #1 seed makes it to the final, they've been unbeaten.

In 18 years of the Midwest Conference Tournament the Regular Season Champion has won it 14 times.
They won the first 9 and have since won 5 of the last 9.
Looks like the WIAC is going to a SIX-team tourney, giving byes to the #1 and #2 seeds.

There is added pressure on the #6 thru #9.
The deference not to damage the OWP with an #8 or a #7 is also wise.
