I'm moving to Fort Worth in November and I'd like to know what programs are reasonably nearby.
My son finishes his senior year at LaGrange this year and I still want to see some DIII football after I move.
So, guys where are the programs in Texas, especially the ones that are reasonably close to Fort Worth?
Thanks.
A few resources that should help you:
Your best bets are to ask on the American Southwest Conference board or to check out this map (since ours no longer works):

It's not perfect, but it should give you an idea
Closest program is Austin College in Sherman, about 90 miles from Fort Worth, then the two programs in Abilene (Hardin-Simmons and McMurry, 140-150 miles)). After that, probably Howard Payne in Brownwood, East Texas Baptist in Marshall (200 miles?), Texas Lutheran in Seguin and Trinity in San Antonio (240-260).

Ron, you left out Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, about 125 miles due south on I35

Makes you wonder if that was intentional? ;)
No doubt Freud would weigh in on this, if only he were still alive. ;D
Thanks folks. I actually did see Mary Hardin Baylor in the playoffs against W&J.
Maybe I'll some of y'all in Texas next season.

QuoteTRENT — While researching a term paper on the history of six-man football in Texas, McMurry student Leman Saunders stumbled upon something fascinating last spring.
Combing through newspaper records on the first officially sanctioned six-man games which were played in 1938, Saunders discovered a long-forgotten experimental six-man league that played in Fisher County in 1936.
At that point, his project changed from historical study to an effort to disprove conventional wisdom.

"Generally, what students do is they try to find something with a lot of nice printed primary sources and they spend some time in the library and that's about it," McMurry history professor Gary Shanafelt said. "Leman decided to write about six-man football and ended up going all over the place.
"It was really amazing because his research for the paper was as interesting as the paper itself. Traveling all over West Texas trying to track down often-defunct high schools to find the records is kind of hard to do. You can't just go in to their library and ask to look through their yearbook from 1936.
"He had a passion for the subject, and he wanted to change the way people thought about six-man football."
In the meantime, Shanafelt is considering Saunders' paper for submission to the West Texas Historical Association, which gives an award for the best student paper of the year.
(Rather than starting a new topic, I have put this story in this topic.)
Ralph: That was pretty interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Here's a map I made:

If you see somebody at a game with a LaGrange College cap or shirt at a game next year, it might be me ;)

Guess I need to go to games in Brownwood, Seguin, and (shudder) Alpine so I can complete my tour of TX D3 stadiums. Was going to Seguin a few weeks ago until they forecast a 100% chance of rain ... which, of course, didn't come through.
Let me know if I missed any on the map and I'll add them.

I was headed for the Wesley @ LaGrange game a couple of weeks ago on my way to Atlanta. I decided the rain was too much of a threat. Maybe I will see you at one of the other places in Texas.
If you like basketball, there are some closer teams to watch.
I don't think anyone mentioned the ever bottom ten in all of football, SAGU, an NAIA team.

Good thought. I should try to take in some basketball games. And I'll be there for this year's basketball season. Any recommendations?

Good games everywhere depending on geography. In DFW, catch the games at UTD.
There is incredible balance in the league for about 10-12 of the 15 teams. Any game would be good.
Don't forget the women.
Howard Payne usually has an excellent team and sells out their gym. Catch them at UT-Dallas or elsewhere.
