I got a request to open a board for this game.
I should point out that the 2009 Monon Bell game board has been open for weeks already and the DePauw and Wabash people know how to start one for themselves. :)
Who will actually be in attendance? Max will be at his first Cortaca since 2005...
Cstate19?
Oh, sorry man, "attendance" = "present at a function or place".

I don't know what to call the stadium where you play your games. First it was Butterfield and then after we took the field over twice it was changed to Chugger West, and last I heard it was Curry field.
Hard to see the name on the stadium when you're walking away from it after the second quarter.
There is a possibility that I will have some extra tickets. Will let everyone know tomorrow or Wednesday.
MaxPower will be set up in the alumni lot (if i can get my a** out of bed early enough) with a small black saturn, a cooler, and (hopefully) some food. Would love to meet any and all PPers.... even if I have to use only one-syllable words ;)
Looking forward to a great game. Weather is sounding like it might be crappy as the long term is calling for rain Saturday. Thanks Max for keeping posts down to one syllable words. Sure it will be easier for you to not have to key your posts into Word first to spell check before cutting and pasting to the boards. Should be a real time saver for you.
dlip is hoping Grastorf goes out on a good note and takes it to the Red Dragons.
Go Cortland! That is all I have to say on the matter. ;)
New poll up. Coach Welch's ever popular game management skills.
I'm tired of these beat downs the Dragons have taken over the past two seasons. Although it's a rivalry, I'm hoping for an IC let down after their big win over Alfred. Cortland's defense gets pissed for getting embarassed by Brockport's offense and pitches a goose egg! Do we have any predictions based on 2009 first hand experiences?

No, no, no, you've got it wrong. It's called an "extra point" when it happens after a touchdown. We'll show you a few dozen times Saturday
Is there any truth to the rumor that after the loss in the first round last year to Curry that coach Welch added his players to his will requesting that they be his pall bearers should he pass away? Rumor is that should he die, he wanted to be let down by the team one last time.

Isn't it funny that your taunts have to involve
another team beating IC?
In reference to the fan poll...I never understood why Coach Welch did this, and from what I understand continues to do so. I remember a Cortaca game at Butterfield one year (I believe it was the year that CS won on a last second TD pass in the same endzone as the score board) where IC punted the ball at least twice while at the CS 30 yard line (one I believe was at the 28-29 yard line). Both punts went into the endzone.
Great coach...but I never understood this. At worst...throw it up in the end zone...

Looking back, I think Welch made the right call, both times
I think his logic was this:
1) Grastorf was
terrible in that game. Absolutely awful. As in 8-25. There was no way you could think he was going to convert a 4th and 9 and 4th and 10 the way he was throwing. It was windy, cold, and he wasn't doing anything in the passing game
2) Curry was down 21-18 at the time, but they three kicks blocked in the game, and muffed a snap on another XP. They weren't playing to get into FG range to kick it and force OT. They needed a TD. Everyone in the stadium knew it. Even when they scored to go up 24-21, they risked going for two.
3) I think Welch believed it would be tougher for Curry to drive all the way down the field on Ithaca, and even gaining 10-15 yards on a punt could be huge. And I think he had confidence in his coverage unit and punter to down one at the goal line (they came close on the first one)
Ultimately, Grastorf just wasn't playing well enough to justify going for it. Heck, he had a man open on the slant the second to last play of the game that would have won it and he wasn't even close.
I'm ultra-critical of the team and the coach, but I think he made the right call there. They wouldn't have picked up those 1st downs anyway

I cannot speak to the Curry game (if you were there...I will take your word for it that it was the right call). But do you remember the Cortaca game I mentioned above? If I remember right, they were moving the ball up and down the field (I am about 90% sure that BY was the QB then) against a .500 Cortland team. On that day (and that day only) punting at the CS 30 seemed to make zero sense...especially because it wasn't like 4th goal/15+ or anything like that.

That was 1997 I think. (Boy, when you start with the qualifier "Cortland won at Ithaca" it really narrows down the number of games you have to flip through :D.) I don't recall the punt in question, although, if memory serves me correctly, that last TD was a busted play where the Ithaca safety fell down. The weather was terrible that day, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Although if BY was the QB, that would make it 1999. I was there and I don't recall there being an incident like that. Just an epic 4th quarter collapse by the Bombers.
I can't confirm nor deny the call in that instance except to say that asking Young to "throw it up" was never a good plan. (And frankly, the QB of the 1997 team, Mike O'Donovan, had issues with INTS too)

On that day, I still thought it made more sense to throw it up to the endzone. At worst, the ball gets knocked down and CS takes over at the 30 or it gets picked in the endzone and they start at the 20. At best, someone makes a play and you put 6 on the board. I mean, to punt and get 10 yards in field position is ridiculous.

Excellent point and to take that train of thought a couple of steps further, another team that I believe Cortland beat 42 zip in the second round of the games that one could argue are probably a bit more meaningful at least to those outside the Cortland Ithaca campuses.
But we're not outside those campuses, and it's a good think we shat the bed against Curry, because you would have had the embarrassment of losing TWO to IC...
It makes sense that your quarterback was awful in the Curry game, but both punts went into the endzone! The net was ten freakin yards! Whats the difference between Curry going 80 down the field or going 70?
I am hoping Coach Grape Jelly brings those game management skills on Saturday.

I see no logic in this comment although your writing skills are outstanding as you don't see many people using the phrase "shat the bed" but if that somehow "floats your boat", "butters your biscuit" or wait, almost forgot your IC stock, "Tickles your pickle", knock yourself out. That aside, would have loved to have seen Cortaca II but not our fault you couldn't pull it off. And yes we did enjoy going that deep into the playoffs even if it were the first time particularly in a year that IC crapped out when it counted.

There was a punt that was called back because Cortland fans were blowing whistles in the crowd. Then the next punt was shanked. That might be what you were thinking about.

Actually we did see Alliance last year and we love the opportunity to square off with IC anytime, anywhere and the playoffs would have made for a great game. The more important question though is why no clever quips in you last post? Guess you "shat the bed" in the first round of your posts here

Thanks for the tip but I usually like to stay to the end even if Cortland is up 2-3 TD's so would never think of cutting out early. You are right though about being uncomfortable in the stands. It's a great facility you all have over there. Another thing to be proud of.

Yeah, I know. Come on, bring something new than the standard Kickball and fans walking out early issues.
Ithaca is certainly more into the arts so you think they'd be more "creative" shall we say? Heard they also have a decent science department thats been doing some interesting experimentation around breeding. They actually succeeded in breeding an Ithaca Bomber offensive lineman with a groundhog indigenous to the Ithaca area back in mid September. The only thing they learned was that had 6 more weeks of crappy football ahead of them.

But we're not outside those campuses, and it's a good think we shat the bed against Curry, because you would have had the embarrassment of losing TWO to IC...
Why would you have wanted to see Cortaca II? Wouldn't you have rather seen Alliance instead of our fans celebrating at your expense, again?
Actually we did see Alliance last year and we love the opportunity to square off with IC anytime, anywhere and the playoffs would have made for a great game. The more important question though is why no clever quips in you last post? Guess you "shat the bed" in the first round of your posts here and last year in the playoffs as well. Well done.
I wasn't the one who made the "shat the bed" comments. Sorry if talking to more than one person is too much for you to handle.

Yeah,
that's an original joke...

Didn't realize originality was a requirement on this board particularly as I seem to recall reading some kickball jokes in the past??? Got something to add to the party other than sitting back and critiquing? Would welcome any originality but my guess is it will be a long wait.

All of RDF's IC jokes were scribbled in the margins of his college textbooks. Unfortunately, he cannot refer to them because they were destroyed in a
cave dorm fire. The real tragedy, however, is that three of the books weren't even colored in yet.

Congratulations boys. You've managed to post two comments even older and lamer than the previous kickball commentary. Was hoping for something more inspiring from two Ithaca boys being such a shall we say "creative" school.
Based on the photo below of Yanks and Johnny U. many years ago, their families knew it was a foregone conclusion early on that they would end up (no pun intended) at Ithaca College.

Ironic that as I type that I await the impending cave man reference, JQV can't resist to go lame too and throw in the cave reference and tack on the coloring book add-on. Nice job...almost time to get creative boys or this will get boring fast.

You have to actually make a pun to use the phrase "no pun intended." I'd try to explain what a pun is in terms you can understand but, frankly, I am not Annie Sullivan.
Be happy to spar with you over the use of the english language anytime you like JQV but let 20 people read the post and 18 will get it. Another sharp pencil out of IC. Or it could simply be that sometimes the truth is actually funnier then anything that could be exaggerated. In other news, Cortland fell just below South Harmom Institute of Technology in the latest Princeton Review college rankings.

Excellent point. The truth is funnier. Now go back to listening to Broadway show tunes and in the end, I'd much rather have a crayon in my hand than my roommate.

Wait a second though. As silly as this whole thing is, why would you use the phrase "no pun intended", when you didn't use a pun? It's not that people won't get it, but it's kind of like writing a post and then just throwing a big word in at the end to appear smart or something. Its a bunch of buncombe if you ask me.

So, have we had our fill of insults? Anyone want to talk about the game? Cortland's 56 points against Brockport is pretty impressive. Is it the competition or is Smith now fully comfortable back behind center?
And on the opposite end, Ithaca with arguably their best defensive performance, albeit against a Secky who may not have been 100% or fully comfortable after the injury.
What can we expect from Cortland this year? Strengths? Weaknesses?

Love to talk football instead although the insults are fun.
Smith is in fact appearing to be more comfortable leading the offense and I think the coaches have figured out how to best use his skills as well as the rest of the team. Personally I think the coaching staff has done a great job with this years team at CState given the injury situation. When Pitcher went down, I was thinking a .500 season would be acceptable. They got creative and brought Smith back and moved more toward a wildcat like offense using the talents of the younger Guiliano. My hats off to the coaches for adjusting and getting to 7-2.
Last weeks concern for me was the defense. They didn't show up giving up so many points to Brockport particularly after the outstanding year the defense has had. If they play up to their potential, it will be a great game.
What's the deal with Ithaca? Certainly not a banner year for them either but frankly I don't know what the expectation for them was at the start of the season.

That Cortland-Bport game was a mind****. Cortland had only allowed a maximum of 17 points in any game and suddenly, they allow 42? It looks like Brockport's turned into Hartwick, but still, that's shocking. But, at the same time, it makes me feel a little better about the 56 they scored now that I know Brockport can't stop anyone.
Ithaca's season has been disappointing, but in retrospect, the talent they lost, especially along the offensive lines, and a road heavy schedule (that's actually been pretty tough) if they wind up 7-3, that's a pretty good season.
It's impossible to know what you're getting from Grastorf, whose accuracy comes and goes, and you won't see any big plays from the passing game like you saw last year. I think this will be a great game.
Man this does suck.... why even bother without an adversary as able as CState?

Inconsistency is the one thing I have been hearing about Grastorf and the significant losses on the O line to graduation. I agree that if both teams play up to their abilities and the weather holds, it could turn out to be a really fun game to watch. Didn't realize they spent a lot of time on the road this year. That really does make a difference IMHO. Traveling was fun but there's no place like home. Sorry for what might be construed as a Judy Garland reference. It was totally unintentional.
Has Ithaca defended anyone that made any signficant use of the wildcat offense this year? While I'm not a real fan of it under normal conditions, it has certainly proved itself to be productive for CState this year and forces defensive coordinators to build plans for it which often takes valuable time away from building a defensive game plan for the opponents standard offense.

Nothing Wildcat related, but Springfield runs that triple-option read and it was a total disaster for IC. Their top defensive player, Matt Scalice has been hurt all year and they miss that. IC's also bit on trick plays from Cortland before. Ithaca's biggest defensive problem for the last five years has been rushing the passer.
One interesting wrinkle is that IC seems to be running trick plays of their own quite a bit, which could be a good sign (Welch opening the playbook up) or a bad sign (not having the confidence to beat teams running standard plays)

I think its a good thing they're opening it up a little bit. The Patriots run flea flickers all the time and you never hear anyone saying its because they didn't have the confidence to beat teams with "standard" plays. I hope the Bombers have something in store come Saturday!
I agree. Coaches opening the playbook wider because they think they have to is very different from a coach simply loading up the gameplan. This is really shaping up to be an interesting game when you break it down.
Wow. I am gone for a little bit and 5 pages are put up. The jokes have been pretty lame with both sets of fans striking out. The old jokes with inserted school names are awful and I have seen them from both sides on here.
As far as football goes I have absolutely no clue what to expect. I have gone to every game since 2003 when I was a freshman and each year, my expectations were clear, but I have no clue what to expect. The Cortland-Brockport threw me for a complete loss and Ithaca is up and down. This might be nice to just walk into the gate at Butterfield and enjoy what unfolds.
Things to consider:
- Does Cortland have a prayer of a Pool C if they win? I say no.
- Why do IC fans use "caveman" references when making fun of Dragon fans when they chant the ever intelligent "OooGa BooGa" after each TD?
- Does Cortland have to "rent out" Butterfield for our annual dance on their field?
- Was Kelly Gordon the best KR to ever play in the Cortaca Jug? Why did Mr. Gordon give him a girl's name?

Are we really talking about the Wildcat, opening up the playbook, and Pool C bids on the Cortaca Board?
Has IC's total domination of the last two jug games (and three of the last five) really beaten C-State's expectations so low that they are relying on the Wildcat?
Here's a football question: How is C-State going to stay within 23.3 points of IC (IC's average margin of victory since 2004)?

Quoting IC's average margin of victory since 2004 is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic...what's the point unless the labs over at Ithaca have succeeded in cloning players from your past? Your team sucks this year relative to even just last year so how does quoting margins of victory back to 2004 become meaningful? Exactly, it doesn't. Should be a great game as both teams struggled this year and seem to match up well. I personally think this could be one of the more interesting and entertaining games to watch in a long time.

Also: Ithaca has beaten Cortland by a sh!tload the past two years. Since after neither of those years did either roster have a complete overhaul, it is relevant to this year.

Was referring to the Cliche a Day toilet paper but seeing as you only focus on what catches your attention which seems to last 3-5 seconds, will let it go. So getting back to football which I am not sure you will attempt to answer as your attention will likely be focussed on the first part of this post, are you actually stating that the IC team this year is not significantly different than last year?

1) It's called punctuation. It's used to break thoughts into clauses and sentences. It makes your written thoughts into coherent statements instead of rambling run-ons.
2) I'm not stating anything. I am typing on a message board.
3) Let me answer your question with a question. Are past results only relevant if both teams bring back 22 starters?
EDIT: No pun intended.
I'll take your delayed response to mean you are searching the walls of the men's room in the truck stop that employs you in the hopes that someone wrote a funny zinger on the wall you can somehow use.

Who will be there to hand me a beer when I walk through the alumni lot? (I said hand me one. I am sure there will be plenty of willing to "throw" one at me.)
I would guess either up in the Terrace Parking lot above the Stadium or across from the main entrance to the college.

Is anyone else having trouble typing a reply after you inert a quote (Yea, Yea here come the awfully clever "Cortland Grad Cant Figure out how to post jokes")?
I think I have parked in both lots before. The one above the field makes for a shorter, more awesome walk to the game but wont allow me to walk through the alumni lot and say hi to a few IC scumbags friends.

Also: Ithaca has beaten Cortland by a sh!tload the past two years. Since after neither of those years did either roster have a complete overhaul, it is relevant to this year.

Surely that plate would be in the Capital parking lot? :D
I'm not sure anyone will get this joke. Capital's QB has a last name of Assman.
Yeah, I went back-and-forth whether it was too arcane, or explaining it would insult people! ;)
Dude, d3 has some of the best names ever...
The quarterback for Depauw is named Spud Dick
Marty Assmann at Capital
Vinson "Jimi" Hendrix at Alfred..
etc.

Saterday IC has a chance to win three straight Cortacas for the first time since '95....
IC and the word "straight" in the same sentence for the first time since...ever?
Almost game day and virtually none of the regulars around. Must mean happy hour down at the RamRod Club in towntown Ithaca. Now I understand why the Ithaca fans are always standing during Cortaca.

Are you Cortland people uncomfortable around that? Is that why you always leave the game midway through the third quarter? And here I thought it was just the 20-point deficits

Looks like Bomber had his fill for the night so he's back here with his head in front of his laptop. Quite a difference from back in the day when your roommates head was in front of your laptop isn't it? Ahh the good old days.
Just got home from bartending. Leaving for IC at 5:45 AM. Hope to see everyone around.

Oh, what a Cortland degree will get you!
Haven't been around lately, so I apologize if this has been discussed, but word is that Grastorf has been suspended for Cortaca because he was caught in possession with an, um, illegal substance. Anyone w/further info?
I'm from Cortland! And even I don't think the Red Dragons have a chance today! I don't even know what a "red dragon" is!
Bombers take home their 3rd straight Jug, 23-20. Story of the day: Turnovers and special teams.
Cortland has four turnovers to Ithaca's one (and the Bombers wound up with the ball then anyway) and great punt coverage and returns gave Ithaca great field position all day. Cortland also had an XP blocked that caused them to chase points all day, including a strange attempt at 16-12 in the 4th quarter. Ithaca goes 3-3 on field goals, including a 39-yarder, and has a pair of good punt returns. Cortland's lone bright spot on special teams was a 40-yard kick return late in the 4th. But Ithaca then downs the ball at the five on their next punt.
Neither offense really looked great and there were few big plays. Smith made some nice throws, but his first INT really killed a promising Cortland drive.
Grastorf made the plays when he needed to, including a huge 3rd and 8 with 5 minutes to go and Ithaca up 16-12.
Three straight wins in the rivalry for the first time since '93-'95
Congrats Bombers...no one likes to see Cortland win...
You know what would be funny right now...a well placed gay joke by 1stand10!!! Let's here it my good man!!!

Congratulations Bombers. Tough game played by both teams.
Man, there was just no excitement on this board this year...
No pun intended. Right Bombers?

Not as old as your holier-than-though post-Darnley peacemaker attitude.
