Title: any programs looking for a player
Post by: IceTrimble on November 17, 2010, 05:26:57 PM
Hey Im a transferring student athlete looking for a program that I can come fit in at. I'm a CB, 5'8, 170lbs. I run a 4.53 and bench 235. I currently have a 2.47 college gpa and 12 credits. I'm from Newport News, Va so it would be nice if you could suggest a school near the Virginia area. I also run track so hopefully a program with both...but if it doesnt have track I'm  fine with that. Im looking to transfer to any school in the spring. Here are some highlights so you can get a feel. Im number 30 in the purple and also white jersey.

What are your educational interests?  I think the best way to go about this is to have some idea of what you would like to do after your college study is completed, and find some schools that fit well with that goal.  Then perhaps arrange a visit to those schools and meet the coaches to see you would like to play for.  Since most D3 schools can be fairly expensive, you may also consider how much of an educational or other supportive scholarship might be available to you.  The educational experience you will get with a D3 school can make the difference and should be a very important part of your focus.  :)  Good luck with your search!

Yeah, in previous threads we have had like this (such as this one (http://www.d3boards.com/index.php?topic=6348.0)), there's been good advice and links to other good advice on other parts of the board.

If you don't get a lot of specific advice, the general stuff can still be really helpful.

Try also the link quoted in the below. Will explain the deal. Sometimes you gotta do the work yourself to get on a D-III team's radar; don't wait around for them to find you.

Quick,
The most informative place to have this discussion might be on the Parents With Kids Looking to Play D3 football Thread, which is here (http://www.d3boards.com/index.php?topic=4015).

Although you're not a parent, that thread is specifically set up for anyone who's brand new to D3 football, to learn the ins and outs.

Good luck, and happy hunting. The D3boards community is usually glad to help.

Since I moved here 5 years ago from Ashburn, I think I know who you are. Let me offer some more info that you might not offer due to some humility, but could help. If I'm wrong just say so.

His brother played at West Point (All-time leading receiver if memory serves). His father played a bit in the NFL and was his coach in High School. If genetics mean anything, he is probably intelligent, and a good athlete. I would guess his size is the holdback for some. Good Luck.

I would worry first about where you can get an education instead of being the D3 Cam Newton.

I just know the Midwest programs.

But, you may want to check out Emory & Henry (Southern VA).  Their Head Coach is the former D. Coordinator from my Alma Mater.

D-III schools in Virginia:
Christopher Newport (757)
Shenandoah
Averett
Ferrum
Bridgewater
Emory & Henry
Randolph-Macon
Hampden-Sydney
Washington & Lee
Catholic (D.C.)
Guilford, Methodist, NC Wesleyan (N.C.) might also be closer to Newport News than some of the others.

Make sure to emphasize that the 2.47 is something you plan to bring up and show that you have something to offer the overall school community besides being a football player. Sometimes schools will look beyond the raw numbers if they feel you can be an asset to campus life. Most of these are not easy schools to get into, but there's a lot of competition between them for good football players and character men, so if you impress them there, you might be alright.

Best thing to do is find the school that offers the educational program you are interested in.  Then contact the coaches (check their websites for phone numbers of the recruiting coordinators and/or fill out their internet forms for prospective players).

Finally, go visit the campuses and see how you like the school, atmosphere, and coaching staff.

Did you find a new place to continue your football and education?  It would be nice to know you found a college to call home, and earn your degree.
