Title: D3's unique player names
Post by: sac on November 23, 2010, 04:25:01 PM
There should be a thread about unique names in D3.

I'll throw out James Oshkeshequoam from Lakeland.  He should be playing for UW Oshkosh.

Well, 3 weeks ago, I felt I had that all timer of names, one Mr. Prettiboi Knuckles, at Maryville College (Tn)....   his merits were being discussed in the GSAC room.....but as I looked to check the spelling, I note that Mr Knuckles is no longer on the Maryville roster!!!!     :'( :'(    Certainly our all namers must be active during the season.....

smedindy found one on Green Mountain College's team which he commented about on the Undefeated and Winless board. Player's name is Cleopass Nakoma.

But Maryville still has Maverick Willett!

No time to do a lot of research, but Denison has a treasure trove:

Bolaji Azeez
Jon Akpapunam
Mike Garabedian
Dimonde Hale
Peter Sahasrabudhe

That's a heck of a starting five. Pity the radio announcer if they ever do play at the same time!

I think they have to win the team award. I'd like to hear Dick Vitale announcing their game. Bolajiiiiii Babeeeee!!! :D

There are very few names that are really hard if you properly prepare.  I am not an announcer, but eventually had no trouble with Tshimanga Biakubutuka (Michigan RB who lit up OSU for 313 yards in 1995), but fully understand why the announcers preferred "Touchdown Tim"! :D

I just found two while perusing the box score of that 7 OT game...

For Southern Vermont:  Jorge Jorge

But more interesting:

For Skidmore: Sakhile Sithole

I was always impressed with my ability to spell Houshmandzadeh without looking it up first.

I always liked the telephone commercial (I think) referencing Bob Wehadababyitsaboy.

A little mundane perhaps, but Keuka's Teddy Tuggles is my entry for today.

In a related matter, the last three players to wear #50 for the U of R were named Thorn, Rose and Bloom.

That is simply the most adorable name I've ever heard.  What preschooler wouldn't want to find a Teddy Tuggles under their Christmas tree?  They're so cuddly!

And how appropriate that he plays for the Keuka Fran & Ollies!

Teddy is only 5'8" and 165 in college.  I hope he had a big brother to protect him in grade school and high school because I'm sure he got harrassed a lot with that kind of name! lol :-)  Big bullies!

Well, he could go by Ted, or Theo, or Theodore perhaps. But his Dad was a Teddy Tuggles as well, and his nickname is "T-Tuggz".

Keuka also has 2 players, Diamond Booker and Putter Brown that were instrumental in their 1st win of the season on Saturday against St. Lawrence.

Aha, a bridge-playing librarian and a winter golfer. :D

Now I know St Louis pharma, who has already played 2 SLIAC teams, isn't D3, but please, these guys deserve consideration

For Stl Pharma... Gozie Uzendu, and Alish Kuply

I had the pleasure of watching Isaiah Shakespeare the other night as his Muskingum Muskies lost to Kenyon in OT.

From a post I made on the E8 board back on Oct. 30th

Perhaps Coach Kornaker is optimistic that this year's recruits will contribute right away. After all incoming frosh 6'5"  Optimystik Kinard (got to be the E8 name of the year and possibly the D3hoops name of the year) has optimism written all over him.

We used to have a lot of fun on this page, but it died... I can't resist this name though..
Yjack mentioned a returning player for Randy Macon over in the ODAC room...Rip Engel.... those of us who are baby boomers may know that Rip Engle (note spelling difference) was a VERY successful football coach (win % .679) at Penn State in the 50s and 60s..... the man who preceded and tutored the next guy, Joe Paterno....  Thought we might be talking a grandson or great grandson till I noted a spelling difference....

NOTE... if you want a chuckle, read preceding pages in this room... some GREAT names....

Indeed!

Take a look at the CUNYAC team pages if you want some interesting and hard to pronounce names.

Like this guy (http://athletics.baruch.cuny.edu/roster.aspx?rp_id=2152&path=mbball), who was the CUNYAC rookie of the year. Do the pronunciation as best you can in your Marv Albert voice!

uh oh. was looking at former Fontbonne Coach Steve Shafer's roster of his first team at Bendictine College, Mesa, and found a candidate for name of the year... except it's DQ'd because it's not D3...

Welcome to Benedictine, Mesa.. 6'8"... Melvin Orji

I'll leave it to someone wittier than me to come up with a great line using his name.... :o :o

Orji finds himself tangled up on the ground with several other players. Not sure who had their hands on the ball.

Fans of the winning Ben-Mesa team rushed the court at the final buzzer, shouting "Orji, Orji !!!!"

Sounds like a fun place to go to school !!
