Great idea but just one question...
Why not Cortfred? Top billing goes to the originator I guess! Just kidding...Alfland is much better and rolls off the tongue even without top billing for Cstate although NBC attorneys might have a problem with that name! I did find a photo of the perfect referee for the fist annual Alfland Mug game.

Looking like it will be a cold day with some possible snow showers on Saturday which in Cortland can mean 6 inches by half time. I know CState is used to cold weather and my guess is AU is as well. Does poor weather favor either team in anyone's mind?

AU is in Allegany County which is known for nasty winters. The old joke is "Attend Alfred University where the sun comes out once a week." However, there hasn't really been any games affected by precip this year, so I don't see any advantage either way. I'm more worried about wind than snow!!

I figured as much. Wind can be a problem in Cortland's stadium. It's been whipping up pretty substantially lately so happy to hear it might slow down the Saxon's! ;)

My email and 50 cents won't buy a NY Post anymore but sent one off to several people at Cortland asking what gives. Not allowing bands just sounds wrong unless there's some legit reason why they don't allow. Whenever that's the case, I immediately think there's some liability issue but for the life of me can't think of one. Probably just a inane rule someone put on paper and it's never been reviewed.

By the way, to the best of my knowledge there is no rule against bands at NCAA D3 playoff games. We have had our band playing at them before. Maybe Cortland doesn't have a band and as a result doesn't want the disadvantage against a visiting team that has school spirit.
MINUS 100K to those at Cortland that made that decision. Isn't D3 all about the experience...from the players, to the students, alumni and friends that support the programs?

To all those making the trip to Cortland for the game,(To see a Red Dragon win) regardless of which side you sit on, safe travels and enjoy the holiday. Looking forward to a great game (Cortland wins) and apparently some top notch kazoo playing! I have no idea what to expect having never seen an AU game, but no doubt both teams will show up loaded for bear. (Cortland moves on) Whatever the outcome, (Cortland wins)congrats to both teams for great seasons...it's always sad that one teams season will end. (Saxons)

Cstate needs:
1. Pitcher sharp passing wise
2. Solid pressure from defense on AU's QB
3. Solid special teams play to win the field position battle
Left out Autera rushing well cause that's a given!
C'mon, give me a break...it takes a while for the postings to get to the west coast!
If PEP does a solo, could someone send me a copy of it? I will play it for our pep band.

Who will win the 2010 Alfland statue?
So has it been determined who is transporting the Alfland statue to the game?
The 3 keys to victory for Alfred:
1. Can not turn the ball over. The AU offense, when on, has been unstoppable this season. But when they are out of sync and turn the ball over it leads to losses to inferior teams (RPI, Rochester) and subpar performances against subpar competition (St Lawrence). With Cortlands ball hawking secondary, this may be the single most important factor in determining the victor.
2. AU must have good protection on saturday. With all conference OLineman Zach Morgan being potentially out (Being the starting Left Tackle no less) its going to be key that the backup step up and perform. This may go hand in hand with key #1, and if protection is good I believe Secky will manage the game well and, through a balanced attack, put up a lot of points.
3. The AU secondary must step up and perform. Considering how heavily Cortland relies on Autera, this may seen counter intuitive, but AU's run defense has been consistently excellent all season long. If the secondary can turn Cortland into a run only team, I will take my chances that Clark, Raplee, Pieri and the rest of the front 7 can stop the run.
Overall, I would say the AU offense is a little bit better then the Cortland offense, but on the other side of the coin I would give the Cortland defense a slight edge over the AU defense. This game will come down to Secky's ability to manage the game and avoid negative yardage plays and turnovers. Obviously I am biased, and that is a grain of salt you should take while reading my predictions, but I think the AU offense comes out and puts on a show. I'll say AU 34 Cortland 17
Another factor to consider is the Strength of Schedule factor. Per D3football.com, Alfred had the #3 SOS in the nation, with Cortland coming in at 102. In their 2 wins over decent teams (Montclair and Ithaca, though considering Ithaca to be a "good team" is highly debatable), Cortland won by a combined 4 points. Where, in Alfreds 3 wins over good teams (St John Fisher, Springfield and Ithaca, with Ithaca again being debatable) they won by a combined 32. Now I know that the transitive property does not apply in football, but Alfred (while more inconsistent) has looked a lot better when playing well. This may become another SUNY maritime like situation (MUCH MUCH MUCH less drastic) where a good record gets exposed by a better team. Not saying I think it will happen, but it is certainly possible.
Remember with SOS, the Empire 8 plays generally 5 OOC games (allowing for a huge variance in SOS above or below .500), while the NJAC teams play 1 OOC each (meaning SOS is trapped between .490 and .510 for the most part). Again, this is a reminder of how deceiving SOS figure can be -- we don't truly know from the numbers alone how good/bad Cortland is this year.

Ok dumb question of the day so please excuse me in advance. Isn't SOS by definition then useless when comparing any two teams when they don't play common opponents or is there some attempt made to weight the calculations to make the results meaningful?

Ok dumb question of the day so please excuse me in advance. Isn't SOS by definition then useless when comparing any two teams when they don't play common opponents or is there some attempt made to weight the calculations to make the results meaningful?
No. SOS was actually chosen, from my memory, in order to do just the opposite -- compare teams that lack common opponents, especially when teams from different regions are being compared. If you have common opponents, your SOS will look very similar to the other team's SOS.
However, SOS only works well if one of two things exist:
1) The SOS's of the teams being compared are on either side of the .500 mark (showing some sort of meaningful deviation, especially if either or both are meaningfully away from .500); or
2) Both teams play in conferences with the same number of teams, and thus, a similar number of OOC games played by both teams' conference members.
The reason I say this is displayed by the following scenario.
Team A plays 5 OOC games with all 5 OOC opponents at 6-3 in games aside from the game vs. Team A. Team A loses one of those games and finishes 9-1.
Team B plays 1 OOC game with the OOC opponent at 9-0 and wins that game. Team B's only loss is to the 8-1 (against other teams) runner up in their conference.
Who had the better quality win? Whose loss was against a better opponent based on numbers alone? Guess what. Team A's SOS, assuming some relatively consistent OOWPs (not varying much from the OWPs) will far exceed Team B's SOS. Why? More or less because Team A played in a smaller conference and had the ability to schedule teams that, when put together, had win/loss records that exceed .500, unlike Team B's requirement to play teams that add up to .500 in all but one game.
Did SOS do its job there? I'd argue no. And the bigger problem is this: what if Team A was actually in the NEFC, with mainly ECFC teams as the team's OOC opposition, and what if Team B was in the OAC, with just that one OOC game? What did SOS accomplish exactly?
More to your question, though, SOS is more meaningful if the OOC games are identical or virtually identical and if the two teams play in the same region against somewhat equal opponents (on a subjective scale). When we compare an East team with a West team, what do the numbers really mean? Can we really compare those opponents when there's no crossover? Essentially, isn't that an indication that the purpose of SOS under the current system isn't really being accomplished?

Not
completely useless, but it can be misleading and (contrary to the selection committee this year) should not be
over-emphasized. Since it is composed of both OWP and OOWP, it tells
something about strength of schedule, just not necessarily very much.
The CCIW, for example, heavily populated the top end of SoS due to a 22-2 record out-of-conference. By our own admission, many of the victims were cupcakes and tomato cans, but (by good fortune) some were highly successful cupcakes this year! (NathCon AQ Benedictine [8-2] lost to North Park, who hasn't won a CCIW game in approximately forever. :o) When your 7 conference opponents all share that 22-2 non-con record, SoS is gonna look good! ;)
Other than human judgment, there is no 'weighting' done to correct the flaws in SoS (as far as I know).
Thanks for the great explanations and examples Frank and Mr Ypsi. In the end I guess it's fair to say it is what it is and better than nothing as long as you keep it's limitations in mind.
To steal a line from The Untouchables, "And so endeth the lesson."
Thanks again and happy thanksgiving.
My last trip to the NCAA's took place in 1997 and ended abruptly with a loss to TCNJ in the round of 16. How do most of the schools deal with Thanksgiving? Early Thr practice followed by a lay off with a Fri afternoon walk through? Kids within several hours can go home for the night.......or is it Turkey in the dining halls?

Cstate team had to stay. Dorms closed but there seem to be enough players in off campus apts to cover everyone. They lifted and practice today and are going as a team to a local hotel for a thanksgiving dinner. Usual day before sessions tomorrow then game day!
Let's fire up these boards!!

But when we work together
We've got the right stuff
Go, Saxons, yay!

AUKazOO:
Plus K for the enthusiasm!!!
Go for it dude. We are all pulling for you guys to have a great day....and also for your Saxons on the field!
Hope you loaded up on turkey day...our best.
From my Wonder Pet knowledge...due to a 2.5 year old girl........I believe they would come to the Dragons aid if in need, not slay them. Wonder Pets got our back!
Perhaps, but the Saxons were close enough to the Vikings that you can call me Hiccup while Alfred trains the Red Dragons to lay down tomorrow!
I'm afraid I'm going to have to shut down this whole train of thought before it leaves the station...
So who is bringing the giant cardboard cutout head of Alf? I will be at the game with my 11-year old son, who wants to brave the cold and watch some playoff football.
Just an FYI to anyone coming to the game...Game time temperatures will be in the middle to upper 30s, and the wind will be 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. So factor in the wind chill when you decide what to wear.
The best place to sit will be on the Cortland side, because it is the west side and the tall bleachers will shield you somewhat from the wind. There should be plenty of room for Alfred fans based on last week's turnout for the Endicott game. ::)
I'd like to think that the winds will work to Cortland's advantage, but don't know enough about Alfred to say. If neither team throws due to the winds...who's rush offense v. rush defense looks better?

We allow 111.9 yds. rushing per game, Cortland 78.8. Coming into the AU game Ithaca was holding teams under 90 per game and our freshman Austin Dwyer rushed for 273. His best games this year came against the toughest defenses. In that game Secky only threw 20 passes. I think if the wind really affects the passing game, then can our o-line block your d-line and vice versa. Of course that's true whether it is windy or not. But I will say that I don't think the AU coaching staff quite realized what we had with Dwyer, even though he was Class B New York State Player of the year in 2009. He is the real deal. I guess your guy Autera (sp?) is as well. I think it is going to be a hell of a game!!

This is going to be a great game wind or not. By all accounts it should be a close game which means exciting to the final whistle. Can't wait for kickoff! Anyone making the trip, safe travels and dress warm!

FWIW, this thing has Mount Union beating D-1A teams like San Jose State, Wyoming and Eastern Michigan. In other words, its worthless.

Agreed. Me and Johnny Labcoat are over on the NESCAC board trying to talk some sense in the form of "No, Mount Union would not beat Harvard. Thanks for playing."
AU up 7-3 on a 30 yd run by Dwyer Cstate looks flat.
Now 14-3 Alfred with 9:42 left in the half.
Cortland play calls seem painfully conservative and the d can't stop Dwyer other than that it's a good game!; ;D
Cortland is wide right on a 34 yd field goal attempt on the last play of the 1st half . 14-3 Alfred at the break.
What did Crispo do?
Congrats AU. Cstate just didn't get it together. Good luck in Ohio !!

NESCACians are usually smarter than that. Do they really believe that? The odd upset, yes, for some of the elite D3 teams, but certainly not on a consistent basis. And Penn would walk through any and all comers from D3, easily.
The AU followers will be happy to know that the guys on the internet broadcast gave a shout out and some face time to the pepband, citing them as the element that pushed the game over the edge in favor of AU. On to next Saterday. There is a reason they play the game.
My sincere congrats to AU and its faithful....Minus some of the tools that were on the chat page on the vid feed.
Make us proud AU!

Nice win for Alfred. They are officially the "last {east} team standing". Pretty impressive for a "non-ranked" team to make it to the Elite 8. Hopefully the Saxons can figure out how to solve for that MUC defense.
I thought DVC would fare better and it looked good in the early going, but the second half was all MUC.
Their defense has allowed 3 pts in 2 games. Pretty impressive to say the least.
As Chris already said, the announcers gave kudos to the pep band! Definitely the deciding edge. Having met Austin Dwyer at the SLU game, I'm amazed how such a diminutive person can be such a "beast" on the field! Secky did a great job moving the chains. Great day! Being able to score against the wind and control the ball was huge in the first half. Wanted to be there, but had to attend a funeral for a colleague who passed away on Monday. Watched the game on the internet. Great option. The winds were minimal and the temps were around 68 in my kitchen. I'll be watching next weekend too. ON SAXON WARRIORS!!!
Congratulations to Alfred. We were beaten by a better team. Alfred controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Cortland tried to hang but not enough fire power. Good luck in Ohio.
Just back from Cortland. The Alfland Mug stays in Mayberry. Congrats to the Red Dragons on a great season and a well-played game. Great game, Saxons! AU Pep Band is proud of our team and will re-group for a trip to Alliance. Pep is now off to music ministry rehearsal. Maybe more later.
On Saxon Warriors!
Congratulations Alfred! I'm sure that win gave my brother Mike something special to smile about today.
Without question the Saxons are the best team we have seen this season. I think Montclair is a solid club, but Alfred was a full tier above that level. Alfred brought great line play on both sides of the ball and that was the difference. It makes me think they have some hope in Alliance next Saturday, though they will have to play their best game to keep it close.
No complaints on the Cortland side. It was a good season - NJAC Championship, 10-2 record, Cortaca Jug, 2nd round of the NCAA's. I won't go into broken record mode on Cortland's weaknesses, as nothing has changed in the last several games. Suffice it to say their season needed to end soon. They over-achieved in my opinion, and had gone as far as they could go in 2010. Hopefully the coaches can parlay the great season into a strong recruiting off-season.
They really need to limit the turnovers next week to give them a shot... Good Luck Alfred.
AUPepBand:
Congradulations to your band, team and fans. I watched most of your game from the West Coast today. It looked real cold. Good luck the rest of the way, Pep.

Thanks for your support, dalby....+K
It was C O L D but the team's play warmed us up and the Alfred fans were extremely vocal and supportive of our Saxons. Our "band" amounted to nothing more than one trumpet, two kazoos and a drumset with a non-drummer banging on them all day. Pep was grateful for our lone trumpet, who drove from Long Island this morning to be there, en route back to Rochester after spending Thanksgiving with her family.
Pep is excited that the students will be back on campus and perhaps Pep can muster a "real band" for the trip to Alliance on Saturday.
On Saxon Warriors!
Congrats to the Alfred program. Your guns were just too big for us to defend! Nothing stings more than an offense that keeps moving the chains leaving you with that helpless feeling. Our offense was just too sporadic, as it has been for several years in big games. Best of luck next week in Alliance!

This Alfred team has matured significantly through the 2010 season. Ironically, the Saxons struggled running the ball early in the 2010 season. Freshman Austin Dwyer emerged as the "go-to" back and has come up with his best results in Alfred's biggest games. Today, Dwyer finished with 186 yards on 32 carries, giving him 1,390 on the season, just 16 yards off the school single-season mark set in 2007 by Vinson Hendrix. Incidentally, Hendrix is one of Dwyer's biggest fans!
On Saxon Warriors!
Here's a story on today's game in which Coach Murray talks a bit about Dwyer:

With all due respect to xdragon77, the offense did not give up 34 points and over 400 yds of offense today. Alfred controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
Clandfan,
You are correct! I only add that the offense left the Defense on the field quite a bit. If we could drive the ball with more consistency, even if going scoreless.....it keeps the other team off the field while wearing out their D. Nothing we don't already know. That is where we got pounded yesterday. The Yin didn't compliment the Yang!
Alfred definately contributed to this situation, but those of us that follow the Dragons know offensive consistency suffered after the O-line injuries starting at the Rowan game. Regardless, Alfred took care of business.
I am proud of the Red Dragons, and agree with DP that we may have over achieved this year! Congrats on a great year and I am already excited to see what experinece returns for next season.

I'll be watching next weekend too. ON SAXON WARRIORS!!!
Unfortunately, unless you can make the game or live in NE Ohio, you'll have to settle for listening to the game. UMU has a deal with the local cable company who broadcasts their games on tape delay. All the more reason to make the trip!
And after seeing Cortland's impressive stadium yesterday and considering that the Jets practice there along with SUNY tuition rates, I think the Red Dragons are the East's best hope for a national contender. Thanks for being gracious hosts yesterday, though the A/C was a little high for my liking.
Thanks AUKazoo but thought you all were used to cold weather. Frankly it was chilly but not the worst by far! Congrats again the Saxons were certainly the better team Saturday for sure. Give em hell in Alliance and a couple renditions of the fight song...you guys were fun to listen to even in a Cstate losing cause!
Hope there's a need for an Alfland 2011 board next year!
Absolutely. Let's hope we play a little more often than once every 30 years. :-[

Well, gosh, Kaz00, if Pep can get past the warning message, perhaps the 2010 Alfland Mug can be back on the front page. My question for Cortland fans is....are the Red Dragons ready to take on the ball control Bombers who play solid defense and excel with special teams play?
Meanwhile, Pep prepares for a Saturday morning trip on a bus (a new bandwagon?) with the cheerleaders, a capella group and the band...to the Courage Bowl. Should be a great game!
On Saxon Warriors!
Just out of curiosity I'm reading the Alfland Mug and that brings to mind a simple solution for how to continue this series. No brainer! All you gotta do switch Cortland and Frostburg. Cortland belongs in the E8 with StJF, Buff St, Ith and Alfred. And why is Frostburg (Maryland) in the E8 and not say the NJAC anyway( along with Salisbury)??? Mug game and Jug game both live on! Pep,AU and RedDragon you should get on that.

Yes, and Salisbury and Wesley will go with Frostburg to the NJAC while Morrisville State comes with Cortland State to the Empire 8.
