I think that the Fair Use of the term, The Belt
TM, for the educational purposes that occur on these boards might mitigate against any copyright infringement or roylaties. ;)
It is not like we have to pay out the wazoo whenever we refer to that championship game that occurred in Arlington, TX yesterday.
Now a product placement ad employing the The Belt
TM during a D-III sporting event might run into challenges from the NCAA.

I'm looking forward to the recruitment wars. Ralph, you could get a lot of sweet campus visits and front-row seats for games out of this. And you could rat out anyone who offers you some wink-wink-nudge-nudge financial aid. Don't be so quick to dismiss kate's idea! :D
As a curiosity, did the Diva Belt originate with Millikin winning the championship that year? If not, it is completely feasible that a team could hold the belt and not be the National Champion. For instance, if a belt holder lost a game late in the regular season or playoffs to a team that didn't make the post season. That team could hold the belt through the next season meaning the national champions would never have held the belt. If that is the case, then the true holder of the Diva Belt would only be able to be known if it starts in 1982 with Elizabethtown's victory and follows the path from there.

Yes, Millikin was the champ the prior year and came into the season with it....with virtually every conference having a conference tourney, there is little chance that the belt holder won't make it in, and therefore the belt will progress to the National champion....But it could happen, particularly if the belt was in the UAA late in the season, and a third or fourth place team got the belt on that last Saturday... and didn't get in the NCAA dance....
One thing did happen - probably more than once. In the 2009-10 season the belt holder, George Fox, lost to NAIA D1 Lewis-Clark State.... of course, it was announced prior to the game that this was a non-title match, and George Fox retained the Belt....
Where The Diva BeltTM resides, and has been, is determined by when the creator of The Diva BeltTM started the competition.
I just awarded The Diva BeltTM to Trinity as champs of the 2003 season when I chronicled its trip to Abilene.
I agree. A non-D3 game is a non-title match.
Well then, it would seem the Grand Exalted Keeper of the Records needs to track the belt from Trinity (by the way, I was on hand at Rose Hulman to see Trinity be awarded the belt that day in 2003) to Millikin.... will try to have it posted before the weekend

If that's so, perhaps it could change the entire course of the Diva Belt's path. Just as others have suggested, it is possible that it ended the season with a team not in a tournament. Wouldn't that shake up D3HoopLand! Anxious for the new research!
Blue Zone Bruin... you nailed it
SERIOUS PROBLEM
the Diva Belt is a tad flawed... by going back to Trinity, wow.. a can of worms....
McMurry beat Trinity to claim the belt on 12/29/03.... it then changed hands 8 times in less than 2 months, going back to McMurry on 2/19/04
on 2/21/04, Sul Ross beat McMurry in the final regular season game, but did not make the ASC tourney.... so the belt went into the 2004-05 season belonging to Sul Ross, not the defending NCAA champ
so in 2004-2005, a repeat performance!!! the belt never left the ASC, changing hands 8 times to Howard Payne.
On Feb19, 2005, Texas Lutheran beat Howard Payne in the last regular season game, and Tex Lu did not make the conference tourney!!!..... Again the belt was done for the year without making the tourney..
So, do we go with the Ralph Turner agenda, starting with Trinity in 2003, working to Texas Lutheran at the end of 2005, and changing the history previously printed.... and keeping the belt in the ASC for who knows how long.... or do we keep with Millikin as the original Diva Belt holder as National Champs of 2004-2005
Perhaps the Trinity belt was simply the Southwest States Championship.... and the National belt did not originate until coming into the 2005-06 season......
This may have to go to the Hall of Fame committee..... I just hope I'm not asked to testify in court.....
oh my gosh... could this mean competing factions????
You mean that there was a competing organization, with its own BeltTM, creating its own championship, just because we were having fun with The Diva BeltTM in Texas.
This is even more dramatic than having competing Wrastlin' Federations!
Maybe the design consultant for the Sul Ross Men's Intercollegiate Rodeo Team (http://www.collegerodeo.com/membership/RegionInfo.asp?Region=SW) attached a silver and turquoise customized Rodeo-style buckle (http://www.bonanza.com/booths/captnmoondancer/items/Western_Rodeo_Decor__Faux_Turquoise__Silver_Buckle) to The Diva BeltTM in the 2004 off-season.

Hopefan,
Great work! I love it when the conventional wisdom gets turned on its head. Gives us another thing to discuss.
I sure do miss the archives that were accessible on the old website.
I am not sure how to look up the old ASC stuff from back when The Diva BeltTM was traveling Texas back roads, like a Willie Nelson tour bus.

I am having trouble finding the old scores from those years to chronicle how and where The Diva BeltTM was unified/reconciled to its current manifestation.
I hope that they are on the old server and will re-appear after this off-season. :)
Ralph- everything you ever needed to know is on NCAA.com... go to Women Basketball, D3, statistics, team statistics down in the lower right where you can pick a team and a season, when the team's page comes up, hit their record for that season and it shows all their results.. not only that, but its easy beyond that because each team they played has a link.. when the title changes hands, just click on the winner and it goes to their schedule.... you only have to go back to original page at the beginning of each season.....
THAT MAKES INFO AVAILABLE ALL THE WAY BACK TO 94-95!!!!
Have Fun and give me a +!!!

Ralph, just a heads-up -- no data is lost.
I have a list of about nine big-ticket items that Presto needs to finish before I feel like we have completed the original scope of this project as was discussed in our first organizational meeting about a year ago. One of them is indeed restoring team pages from past seasons.
Okay, after rereading through the entire original Belt
TM thread and remembering that a Diva Belt
TM thread existed... I'm going to try to rebuild this history.

Amherst becomes the second team in Diva Belt
TM history to keep It
TM for an entire season (Thomas More in 2015-16) and matches its program record of 34 consecutive title defenses. The Mammoths will need to win their first 28 games next season to match Thomas More's streak.
surprisingly Amherst only successfully defended The Diva Belt TM twice, against Farmingdale State and RPI, before the upset loss to Eastern Connecticut last Tuesday.
The Warriors immediately ceded The Diva Belt TM back to the NESCAC, losing to Williams on Sunday.
The first title defense for the Ephs will be Friday night at home against Alfred. If they hold it until January 16, Amherst will get a chance to win back what it surely considers to be its personal property.
Williams defeated Alfred last night, but gave it up in defense #2 today to sixth-ranked Tufts in non-conference intra-NESCAC action.
The Jumbos put The Diva Belt TM on the line Tuesday evening at home against Bridgewater State.

Tufts get Amherst at home and I believe also now #2 Bowdoin in Medford, so The Diva Belt
TM might want to look for rentals in the Medford area because it could be there for a while. Outside of those 2, I actually think a road game @ Conn College could be their 2nd or 3rd toughest test remaining this year (depending on what you want to make of Amherst this year in the early going).
after 6 successful title defenses, D3Hoops #1 Bowdoin took The Diva Belt TM from Tufts yesterday.
The first defense for the Polar Bears will be Tuesday at Husson, but I imagine their first serious challenge will be Saturday 1/26 at home against reigning national champion Amherst, a rematch of last year's national title game and very possibly the regular season Game of the Year in all of D3 women's basketball.
I suppose I should probably put this in chart form.

Bowdoin likely survives their toughest test of the regular season in defeating Amherst so hopefully the Diva Belt TM likes Maine winters!
so Bowdoin held The Diva Belt TM until dropping it back to Tufts in the NESCAC championship. The Jumbos successfully defended three times in the NCAA tournament against Western New England, Haverford and Messiah before ceding it to Scranton.
Scranton lost its first defense to Thomas More, who goes for the championship in its final ever Division III game against...Bowdoin.
Jeez, even end days WCW had a more vibrant main event scene than D3 WBB. Speaking of which, in pro wrestling parlance, when "leaving the territory" one is always supposed to go out on one's back, counting the lights, doing the job, etc.
What happens if Thomas More walks into the NAIA sunset as unbeaten national champions? Will they throw The Diva Belt TM in the trash at their first home game in November, as Madusa (nee Alundra Blayze) did with the WWF Women's Championship on Nitro in 1996?
Is the title vacant for the 2019-20 season and handed out along with the 2020 Big Doorstop if the Saints win tonight?

do we recognize Amherst or George Fox as the belt holder coming out of this event? What if Emmanuel and/or CMS win today, do they have a claim? Might need a Triple Threat, Fatal Fourway or a Ladder Match to decide this!
so it looks like Emmanuel won yesterday, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps lost. I propose each team claim its ownership of The Women's Belt (honestly, WWE retired the term "diva" 4 years ago, so can we) and we'll see how long it takes the three paths to become unified.
next defenses:
Amherst 12/31 vs. Redlands (at Chapman) 7 pm EST/4 pm PST
George Fox 1/3 home Willamette 9 pm EST/6 pm PST
Emmanuel 1/8 at Salem State 6 pm EST
Sounds good. Pro Wrestling used to have regional champions years ago anyway. :)
#6 Amherst fends off Redlands by 8 points and will defend again today at Chapman.
EDITS: Amherst defeated Chapman, will defend 1/4 at Widener.
George Fox lost its first defense to Willamette. The Bearcats defend the West Coast title 1/10 at Whitworth.
Amherst tapped out Widener, Stevens and Albertus Magnus with ease and will bring its Belt into the NESCAC, starting tomorrow night at Middlebury.
Emmanuel hammered Salem State in its first defense; GNAC play begins Saturday at home against Rivier.

Last night, Whitman pinned PLU, 63-51, to capture a share of the Women's BeltTM.

From the Department of Desperately Seeking a Silver Lining: at least two of the three would have ended their season with a loss - this way all three finished with a win! ;D
1st defense of the season for one of the pieces of the D3 Women's BeltTM.
Messiah beats Lebanon Valley 73-38
Looks like Bowdoin and George Fox will keep their pieces until next season but the third will be up for grabs in the MACC.
2nd defense in as many nights for Messiah as they head to Lebanon Valley and beat them again 68-47
Next up Messiah heads to Stevenson on Thursday.
Messiah holds on in their first game against Stevenson 49-45. Up 12 headed into the 4th quarter, Stevenson went on a 16-4 run to tie it up but couldn't finish off the comeback.
In the return meeting Messiah wouldn't give Stevenson a chance to even think about holding a share of The D3 Women's BeltTM jumping out to a 20-4 1st quarter lead and winning 78-48
Next up for Messiah is Alvernia
Messiah again takes both matchups 78-52 and 65-47.
Next up is Widener who is also 6-0 for the year. Should be a great couple games with The PieceTM on the line.
George Fox will at least have their Piece of the D3 Women's BeltTM on display for the first time this weekend as they have 2 matchups with NAIA school Northwest (WA). These are currently the only scheduled games for George Fox.
Messiah will continue to defend their PieceTM after beating Widener 65-49 and 65-42.
Final regular season games against winless Eastern Thu/Fri
But fear not... there will be more games with a Piece of The D3 Women's BeltTM on the line. George Fox will begin NWC play on Saturday with 9 games currently scheduled.
Messiah is a very good team and will continue to be so. This could be a long reign with The Belt!
Messiah will carry The PieceTM to the Commonwealth championship on Thursday after beating Eastern 75-44 and 72-38.
George Fox gets underway Sunday afternoon at Whitman.
First transfer of the season... Whitman defeats George Fox 74-55 and takes The Western PieceTM. They will carry ItTM to Spokane for two games Fri/Sat against Whitworth. They've already played twice in Walla Walla and split by a combined 5 points.
Will The PiecesTM be reunited this season?
Messiah: 11/12 vs Salisbury
Bowdoin: 11/13 vs Nazareth
Whitman: 11/8 @ E Oregon (on display only); 11/20 @ Austin
Bowdoin wins their opener 65-44 vs Nazareth. Next defense of The PieceTM is tomorrow at UNE.
Messiah wins both games at the Gwynedd Mercy tournament, Salisbury 53-44 and the hosts 98-68 to retain The PieceTM. Next defense is Tuesday at Gettysburg
Whitman is continuing their "display but not up for grabs" tour after beating Eastern Oregon and Montana Western. Currently showing it off to Southern Oregon. The PieceTM will first be up for grabs next Saturday against Austin.
Bowdoin is 5-0 and will face the only team to be within single digits of them so far this season U New England tomorrow.
Messiah passed The PieceTM on to Gettysburg after the Bullets won 65-55 at home on 11/16. Their first defense is tomorrow at Johns Hopkins.
Whitman has finally started putting The PieceTM on the line. They won their first defense and take ItTM to UT-Dallas tonight.
Bowdoin continues to hold The New England PieceTM after beating U New England and MIT last week. Next up are some non-conference conference games against Bates and Colby.
Gettysburg were successful in their first defense of The Atlantic PieceTM. They face McDaniel, Dickinson, and Washington College next in conference action.
Whitman still holds The Western PieceTM. They'll open up conference play against Willamette.
Bowdoin lost on Wednesday to Bates 74-70 thus giving The New England PieceTM to the Bobcats. They successfully defended ItTM today against Clark. Final game before the holidays is at Husson on 12/13
Gettysburg continues to hold The Atlantic PieceTM after 3 successful defenses this week. One more game before the holiday break 12/11 at Haverford.
Whitman retained The Western PieceTM after beating Willamette. Still 4 games before the holidays, first at Whitworth on 12/7, then a visit from Colorado College on the 12th before heading to Santa Cruz for games the 19th and 20th against C-M-S and hosts UCSC
Bates and Gettysburg still hold their PiecesTM but The Western PieceTM changed hands before the holidays and spent the break with the Banana Slugs in Santa Cruz. With Tufts out west to play UCSC tonight in a battle of one loss teams, it's possible 2 of the 3 PiecesTM end up in NESCAC hands.
Two of the three PiecesTM have been reunited. Trinity took possession of a PieceTM in back to back games this week. We're now down to just The Atlantic PieceTM and The Double PieceTM

Trine hits a Blue Thunder Bomb and covers Hope for the 1-2-3 and new The Women's Belt tm champions!
The Thunder defend for the first time against our pal Greg Sager's North Park Vikings at 5 pm Monday in St. Petersburg, Fla. with Wartburg waiting for a potential title shot tomorrow.
Trine won its first two defenses against North Park and Wartburg; UW-Eau Claire is the new #1 contender this afternoon on DePauw's home court. The winner will defend again tomorrow against the winner of DePauw vs. Marian.
Blugolds new champions, they dethrone Trine 75-68.
UWEC at DePauw tomorrow.
after two successful defenses against DePauw and Oshkosh, #9 Eau Claire's title reign came to an end in a ranked battle at home against #17 Whitewater 79-69.
Oshkosh immediately regains #1 contender status as they visit UWW on Wednesday night.
another title change - Whitewater won its first defense against Oshkosh but went down today 72-65 at UW-Stout.
Eau Claire with the first shot at getting The Women's Belt TM back on its home floor against the Blue Devils this Wednesday night.
UWEC reclaimed The Women's Belt TM by thrashing Stout and then survived in OT at La Crosse on Saturday. They're at River Falls tomorrow night; if they make it through that and the ensuing two defenses against Oshkosh and Whitewater there's a pretty decent chance the Blugolds hold it all the way into the NCAA Tournament.
The Women's BeltTM has been doing some traveling the past month. River Falls claimed ItTM in an 81-70 win over UWEC on the 25th then promptly handed ItTM to Stout on Wednesday in a 70-55 win for the Blue Devils.
Next opponent, UW-Platteville

Stout has made two successful defenses, against Platteville and La Crosse - huge test tomorrow at Whitewater.
2/11: Stout drops title to Whitewater
2/15: Whitewater drops title to Platteville
2/21: Platteville drops title to Eau Claire (the Women's Belt almost didn't make it out of the regular season)
Eau Claire succesfully defended 2/24 against Stout, but dropped the title to Whitewater in the WIAC Championship game.
a lot of hot potato over the last month. UWW defends against Webster in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this Friday.

You realize I get $1.25 every time you use the word "BeltTM" don't you? My agent will be in touch.
I think that the Fair Use of the term, The BeltTM, for the educational purposes that occur on these boards might mitigate against any copyright infringement or roylaties. ;)
It is not like we have to pay out the wazoo whenever we refer to that championship game that occurred in Arlington, TX yesterday.
Now a product placement ad employing the The BeltTM during a D-III sporting event might run into challenges from the NCAA.
Re-reading the Women's Belt thread...
Does the Women's Belt have an NIL?
The traveling continues as Whitewater loses to Trinity in the Sweet 16 who immediately lose to Smith. The 12 days Whitewater held The BeltTM tied the longest stretch ItTM remained with one team since last year's champs gave ItTM up to Trine in December. Hopefully (to me anyways) ItTM will change hands again when Smith faces Transylvania in the Final Four next Saturday. Either way, the Pioneers will carry The BeltTM to Texas for the title game April 1st.

The Pioneers beat the Pioneers 76-65 as The BeltTM changes hands yet again and will spend a couple weeks in Kentucky. We must wait until April 1st to see where ItTM will spend the summer. Could ItTM decide to have a family reunion with The Men's BeltTM at Christopher Newport?

3/18/23: Transylvania
I may have missed something but I believe if CNU beats Transylvania they will be the first D3 school to ever win the men's and women's basketball national championships in the same year. This feat has only been accomplished three times in NCAA history, once in Division II by Central Missouri in 1984 and twice in D1 by UConn (2004, 2014).
The BeltTM spent the summer in Lexington making all the Kentucky Wildcat fans jealous that they've never won anything as wonderful as The BeltTM.
Now that the season in underway, Transylvania has defended ItTM at DePauw 60-50, then at home against Maryville 72-42, and Wisconsin Lutheran 54-48. Next up Wittenberg will head to the Beck Center.
2023-24 Belt PathTM
3/18/23: Transylvania
Since March 18, 2023, Transylvania successfully defended the Women's BeltTM on 32 successful occasions.
However, tonight, March 14, 2024, in the DIII Women's Basketball Semifinals, the 33rd challenger, NYU, successfully hit Violet Storm ZeroTM and covered for the 1-2-3 pin over Transy to become the new Women's Belt TM champions.
Final score-- NYU 57, Transylvania 42.
In the process, Transylvania's 64 game winning streak, the third longest in NCAA DIII Women's Basketball history, came to an end, and Wash U's 81 game winning streak set from
1998 to 2001 will still stand as the longest DIII Women's Basketball streak for some time to come.
NYU's first title defense will be on Saturday, March 16, 2024, against Smith. The winner of Saturday's game will not only hold the Women's BeltTM for the summer, but will also claim the Walnut and Bronze from the NCAA.
2023-24 BeltTM Path
3/18/23: Transylvania
3/14/24: New York University
NYU's first defense as holders of the Women's BeltTM ended up successful. Smith gave a 5 star match to try to claim the baubles, and stayed within single digits for a lot of the contest.
Many people did not think that Smith was worthy of being a "Final Boss" to end the season, but the Pioneers proved up to the challenge.
However the match came to an end when Sofia Rosa of Smith was forced to submit to NYU's suffocating defense. After Rosa submitted and fouled out, NYU hit Violet Storm ZeroTM and made the cover to not only remain Women's BeltTM champions, but also claim the Big Doorstop-- the NCAA Walnut and Bronze.
The Women's BeltTM travels to the corner of Bleecker and Mercer Streets in Greenwich Village where it will be based for the summer. Among the stops on the summer tour, Caroline Peper and the family are planning to make arrangements for the Women's BeltTM to pay a visit to Stonehill in Easton, MA for a few days-- there will be plenty of security on the tour to make sure that no one absconds with the baubles.
Once again, the final BeltTM path for the season was as follows:
2023-24 BeltTM Path
3/18/23: Transylvania
3/14/24: New York University
NYU's next title defense will be in November, 2024. Until then, enjoy the off-season.
Since March 14, 2024, NYU has successfully defended the Women's Belt TM 17 times. No team has even come close to getting a pinfall or submission on the Violets this season.
NYU's 18th title defense will be on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Ratner Center in Chicago, when the Violets face the team that came the closest last season to defeating them in the Chicago Maroons. Should that defense be successful, the anticipated 19th title defense will be played at WashU in St. Louis on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
That is your latest update on the Women's Belt TM situation.
