Does anyone know if the NCAA tournament is taken into account when voting for the D3hoops All American teams and POY? I know Pat had said last week that regional teams are based off the regular season. Maybe Pat could answer this?
The All-Region team nomination process starts at the end of the regular season and only includes regular season stats. But it would be silly for us to ignore the postseason when selecting All-Americans.
That's what I thought but just wanted to clarify. Thanks Pat!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the WBCA announced their D3 All-American team at this year's banquet which was always a highlight of the banquet. Two players were announced at a time-out of one of the games....very anti-climatic! Then I guess POY is announced at D1 Final Four, even more anti-climatic as those aren't the fans that follow D3. In the past POY was announced at the banquet, then attended D1 Final Four and was introduced. Anyway, just seems weird to me to not celebrate these fine players in a bigger way infront on "their" fans.
That's true, they didn't.
One of the coaches on the NCAA committee told me they wanted to have a WBCA presence at the games themselves, rather than just at the banquet and not afterward. I don't know if they got what they wanted out of it, but that was their reasoning.
I'll be interested to see how they handle the announcement going forward, because it was such a non-event this year at least for those in attendance. Oh well, at least they are trying.
I would be interested to understand how the D3 Hoops player of the year doesn't even warrant honorable mention by the WBCA (There team is announced on the website)
In order to be on their All-American team, you first have to be nominated by your coach. If your coach doesn't send your name in, you will not be on the list that is then sent out for voting by the other coaches. I don't think coaches can write in a name if they are not on it. I do believe that if Olivia Lett had been nominated she would have more than likely been named to a team, if not first, than at least second.
There's no second team for WBCA. There's a 10-person "first" team and a ton of honorable mentions.
It has been awhile since this thread was used, but I figured it was a good time to bring it back.
2017-18 Preseason All-America selections in women's basketball have been announced: http://www.d3hoops.com/awards/all-americans/women/preseason-2018
One note on the preseason All-America teams: I believe Sara Dyslin is out for the season. She was injured just before volleyball season, and while HIPAA probably precludes me from mentioning the specific injury, it's one that'll have her out for a full calendar year.
Regardless of the rest, for what it's worth, HIPAA only prevents you from speaking if you are the one treating her.
Well, that's a total bummer.
I'm very sorry to hear that for Sara and Hendrix.
Once again resurrecting this thread. I think it is a foregone conclusion that Aston Francis will be national POY for the men. Is Madison Temple also a shoo-in, or am I forgetting some worthy competitor?
I'd be very surprised if Temple isn't Player of the Year. :)

Hannah Spaulding (St Thomas), Brandi Dawson (Trine), Kelsi McNamara (St Joe's Maine), Nakira Examond (Mass-Dart) would seem to be candidates for consideration(AA for sure). But none are nearly as dominant in so many categories like Temple (on the #1 team too). 23.8 pts, 7.7 rebs, 5.7 asst/g, 2.3 a/to, 2.8 stls/g. 61.8% FG%, 89.2 FT%.
Maybe there's a chance Spaulding could still play her way past Temple with a couple of great performances next weekend. But Temple has to be the leader right now.
We just released our All-Region Award winners, which is the first step in the All-American process.

Congrats to all the winners!

Looks like it is Temple, then, as UST loses to Bowdoin in the first semi, with Spaulding getting just 17 points.
Had 4(Madeline Eck, Katie Garrish, Hannah Fox, Cassidy O"Malley) of the 7 NE & Mid-Atlantic players on the preseason All-America 1st 3 teams on my prospect lists 4 & 3 years ago. Ironically, never saw Scranton's Makenzie Mason or Erica DeCandido in AAU and Maddie Hasson I considered too far away from Scranton.
Good to see the HCAC getting a rep on the 2nd team with Alexis Nall, Hanover. Was hoping Shelby Boyle from Transylvania would find her way on the Honorable Mention List, but it was maybe too wishful of thinking on my part.
WRT to Ryan's column on POY:
Good choices! I go back 4 years to AAU ball with Hannah Fox and Maddie Hasson; saw Maddie in person @ the final 4 last season and talked with her dad at our hotel breakfast; either is worthy; haven't seen the other 3 nominees yet. 2 others that I would recommend for consideration are Leah Springer(Messiah) and Cassidy O'Malley(Ithaca). If forced to choose, I'd give the nod to Hannah.
So big awards handed out today from D3hoops.com: https://www.d3hoops.com/awards/all-decade/2010s/women/announcing-wbb-all-decade-team
By eliminating 2 years of competition, consideration for the productive careers of Leigh Ann Burke(1st and 2nd team AA), Liz Hickey(2nd and 3rd team AA), and Hillary Klimowicz(national POY) were unfairly penalized. Those years should have been included.
There will eventually be some recognition of the players who got lost in between the All-Decade teams. We're aware.

Patients, sir... patients.
... or, if you prefer, patience. We're good either way.

HAHA! That bites me everyone once in awhile especially when I'm in a hurry. Having a father for a doctor hurts that spelling in my head ... always patients first. HAHA
I think that would be......having a doctor for a father.
You need to slow down a little more. ;)

Yes, over the years I've used a function for D-Mac that translates his written word to spoken. ;)

I've been a bit distracted. You are right ... got that backwards. Sometimes my LD likes to kick in and I don't catch it. HAHA

Jordan Moretti (UMass Dartmouth) is the best female player in D3. Change my mind.

Don't sleep on sophomore point guard Damaris Rodriguez at NJCU. Already has games of 16 steals and 18 assists this year and would have likely been the D3hoops.com National Rookie of the Year if they had made selections last spring.
If you're talking guards, returning All America Kenedy Schoonveld of Hope has to be in the discussion. Her numbers are modest because Hope normally plays 10-15 deep and is going even deeper this year so she plays just 18 minutes/game. But if you watch her, she is just so solid in every aspect of the game. As a 5'10" point guard, she is much stronger and overwhelms many of the typically smaller guards at the D3 level.

She's also racking some of those numbers up playing 35+ minutes in 50 point blowouts. I think she's a tremendously talented player, but the number are not going to help her argument.

Some contrast to that from another player worthy of consideration - Olivia Voskuil (Hope). Currently averaging 12 points, 6 reb, 3 blocks, and 3 steals while playing 17 minutes per game
I watched Moretti play against Tufts on Saturday and was impressed.
Same goes for Mya Shannon at DePauw.
