Title: 2013 Playoffs
Post by: Ron Boerger on November 11, 2013, 01:42:30 PM
Well, thank you so much, NCAA, for making undefeated Trinity (TX) not only travel to Illinois for the first two rounds but for also setting up a potential third-round match with #1 Montclair State should they win.

Quick look at the brackets using last week's Top 25:

WashU Bracket (NCAA's top seed):
#2 WashU
#8 Messiah
#13 Hardin-Simmons
#14 UW-Whitewater
#16 Aurora
#17 Calvin
#24 Puget Sound

William Smith Bracket
#3 William Smith
#9 TCNJ
#10 Ithaca
#12 Rowan

Montclair State Bracket
#1 Montclair State
#4 Trinity (TX)
#6 Wheaton
#7 Lynchburg
#11 Emory
#20 Loras
#21 Illinois Wesleyan

Johns Hopkins Bracket
#5 Johns Hopkins
#15 Misericordia
#19 Middlebury
#22 Carnegie Mellon

Yep - those are some well-balanced brackets.   Why not just give Hopkins their tickets to SA now  ???

Don't overlook Middlebury Ron!

Kinda funny that Amherst and Springfield, about 30 mins apart from one another in Mass., travel 7 hours to Messiah to play one another. Joining them out there will be Mass. neighbor, Lasell, who is less than two hours to the east of Amherst. Lots of bus miles for those three teams!

The game between Trinity (TX) and Illinois Wesleyan University has been postponed until 10:30 AM Monday due to inclement weather at the site which knocked out power at the IWU campus.

Let's see.  Middlebury weather for the weekend.  30's and snow Saturday, 20's and snow Sunday.  Way to go NCAA!!  Sure to get some great playoff Soccer in those conditions.

Not a whole lot better in San Antonio with very windy, wet weather in the low-mid 40s all weekend.     It's that time of year.

But not a 'surprising' upset (see Rose-Human over Ohio Wesleyan on the men's side).  It was #1 vs. #4 In d3.com rankings.  Plus the game was at Trinity.  The gusty wind hurt both teams, of course.  I also watched the Wheaton-Emory game, and the passing and ball control by both teams was much better in that contest than what Trinity and Montclair State showed.

Thunder over the home team tonight, 2-0.

Why isn't Hopkins hosting? Higher in nat'l rankings... Am I misreading something?

Trinity (TX) finally qualifies for the Final Four they have hosted for a number of years with a 2-1 victory tonight over Wheaton.  Hannah Kuhl scored the equalizer in the first half and assisted on Kimberly Polasek's GW goal in the second.

A bold prediction.   The wrong one, as it turns out, but bold nonetheless.   ;D

Preliminary forecast for San Antonio this weekend:

Friday:  High 47, Low 32, wind N 10-12, 30% chance of rain
Saturday:  High 36, Low 34, wind NNE 11-14, 30% chance of rain

One forecast offers snow instead of rain on Saturday, which would be highly unlikely but has happened before.

While the video below from a local station focuses on Trinity, there are a few shots at the end of Toyota Field where this week's festivities will be held.

A safe journey to all making the trip.  The forecast is still a bit up in the air; if anything ends up freezing on the roads, exercise EXTREME caution as we don't know how to drive in such conditions, and there is not much highway equipment available to help make travel safer.   In South Texas about the only thing we usually have on hand to spread on bridges and such is sand, which doesn't do a whole lot of good in icy conditions as you folks from up north know.

I do remember bundling up for the weather down there in 2009?  Have fun, drive carefully.

Soccer in Texas just can't seem to catch a break! Every since the Tigers went up to Chicago it seems they've brought the bad weather back with them! Warm all week and then a frigid cold front worst then the sweet 16/elite 8 games two weeks ago! Good luck Tigers but a big congratulations to all the teams that have made it this far!

Great game by William Smith to make it to the finals.  I think Coach Wilbur is going to get another National Championship this year!   They scored early and then held the lead to beat Capital 1 to 0.
Middlebury is going to be tough in the other semi.  Coach Kim is a pretty intense guy. I am sure they will be prepared to play.

Middlebury was solid but Trinity controlled a good deal of play and earned the victory.   It will be an interesting battle tomorrow between a veteran team used to Final Four appearances and one making its initial foray on that scene.    With Smith giving up only three goals all year (and none in months) the Trinity women have their work cut out for them.

Trinity had a few chances today, but the stout William Smith defense was up to the challenge.   Congrats to the Herons on their second NCAA championship.
