Title: Conference Tournaments 2014-15
Post by: 7express on February 08, 2015, 04:01:23 PM
Hey Pat, are you going to create a separate thread for conference tournaments this year like you did last year, or should we post all results on this thread??

Yes -- I've separated this out into a new thread. Thanks for asking!

In the LEC:
An Eastern Connecticut win over UMass-Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon would give Eastern Connecticut the regular season championship and the #1 seed in the upcoming LEC tournament which starts with quarterfinal round play on Tuesday, February 24.

After Saturday's action in the LEC:
Eastern Connecticut beats UMass-Dartmouth 74-65 to officially clinch the #1 seed in the LEC tournament.
Boston beats Plymouth and will likely end up as the 6th seed.  Can still finish as the 5 seed but they need to win twice and have Western Connecticut lose twice for that to happen.  Likewise, Boston can still end up 7th, but they need to lose twice and have Southern Maine win twice.  Boston can still tie Plymouth at 4-10, but since Boston swept the season-series 2-0, it's become impossible for Plymouth to finish higher than Boston.
Keene state put a second half beatdown on Western Connecticut to run away with an 18 point win (after trailing by 4 at halftime).  Keene goes 1 up on Western for the 4th spot, the final home game in the quarterfinal, but Keene finished the season-sweep of Western Connecticut, so Keene is theoretically 2 games up with 2 games to play, so it's looking likely we have the 4 teams that will have home games in the LEC quarterfinals all wrapped up (Eastern has locked up 1, Dartmouth, RIC and Keene are likely the other 3).

The LEC tournament is officially set:

#5 Western Connecticut (14-11, 6-8) (99)
@ 2/24 7:30 PM
#4 Keene State (17-8, 8-6) (101).  Keene swept the season series 2-0 winning both by at least 13 points.

#8 Southern Maine (5-20, 2-12) (39)
@ 2/24 7:30 PM
#1 Eastern Connecticut (21-4, 13-1) (80). Eastern swept the season series; won by 29 @ USM, but only by 14 at home.

#6 UMass-Boston (14-11, 6-8) (82)
@ 2/24 7:30 PM
#3 UMass-Dartmouth (13-12, 9-5) (98).  Season series was tied at 1-1 with each winning at home.

#7 Plymouth State (7-18, 2-12) (62)
@ 2/24 7 PM
#2 RI College (18-7, 10-4) (66).  RI College swept the season series 2-0 and haven't lost to Plymouth in 5 years.

Semifinals and finals @ Eastern:
#4 Keene State (18-8, 8-6) (81)
@ 2/27 5:00 PM
#1 Eastern Connecticut (22-4, 13-1) (63).  Eastern was 2-0 winning by 24 in Keene, but only by 6 at home in a game they trailed most of the way.

#3 UMass-Dartmouth (14-12, 9-5) (63)
vs. 2/27 7:30 PM
#2 RI College (19-7, 10-4) (75).  Series was tied 1-1 with each team winning at home.  Dartmouth won by 10, RIC won by 11, but RIC was up by 32 with 11:30 to play in the second that game before they fell asleep at the wheel and made the score appear closer then it was.

#4 Keene State (19-8, 8-6)
vs. 2/28 2 PM
#2 RI College (20-7, 10-4).  RIC swept season series 2-0 have won 8 straight in the series and 14 of 15 overall.

UMass-Boston was 0-2 against RI College while Western Connecticut was 1-1 that's how Western ended up as the 5th seed: Plymouth was 1-1 against Eastern Connecticut while USM went 0-2 that's how USM ended up 8th.   Dartmouth, Keene & Eastern all have home quarterfinal games with the women's team and in LEC play women play at 5:30, men play at 7:30, RI College is the lone men's team that has the single game at home so that will begin at 7.  Semifinals and finals will be Friday, February 27-28 at the site of the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals.  Eastern Connecticut women are also the 1 seed in the women's tournament and even if both win on Tuesday I believe the women will play first on Friday at 1 & 3 and the men will play at 5:30 & 7:30 regardless of where the semifinals are taking place.

Ohio Wesleyan has clinched the top seed in the NCAC tournament. The Bishops have a two-game lead on Wooster with two to play, and having swept the Scots, own the tiebreaker. OWU will be the first #1 seed not named Wooster or Wittenberg in at least 22 years, when Wittenberg and Allegheny were co-champions.

The CCIW tourney will be in Rock Island.  Augie (#1) will meet the winner of NPU @ NCC (#4).  Elmhurst is at IWU to determine #2, but they are assured of meeting in the other semi whoever wins this week.

Definitely a key game to see who the "home team" will be in Rock Island. If Elmhurst loses, it will be tough for them to win as the away team against IWU, especially two games in a row. As we know, home teams generally have the advantage!  ??? ;D

The NESCAC tournament is set:

#8 Colby (13-11, 4-6) (63)
@ 2/21 3
#1 Trinity (CT) (19-5, 9-1) (66)

#7 Williams (15-9, 5-5) (74)
@ 2/21 2 PM
#2 Bowdoin (17-7, 7-3) (87)

#6 Wesleyan (16-8, 5-5) (66)
@ 2/21 3
#3 Bates (19-5, 7-3) (59)

#5 Amherst (18-6, 6-4) (92)
@ 2/21 2
#4 Tufts (13-11, 6-4) (66)

All conference games are over, but Bates & Bowdoin have a game on Monday, while Williams has a game on Tuesday.

Semifinals and finals are 2/28-3/1 at the highest remaining seed after quarterfinal play.  I don't think the #8 seed has ever beaten the #1 seed on the men's side in the NESCAC tournament.

Semifinals & finals taking place @ Trinity:

#2 Bowdoin (18-7, 7-3)
vs. 2/28 4 PM
#5 Amherst (19-6, 6-4)

#6 Wesleyan (17-8, 5-5)
@ 2/28 2 PM
#1 Trinity (CT) (20-5, 9-1)

WIAC field is set, just not the seeds.

Whitewater 14-1
Stevens Point 14-1

Both have 1st round byes. Whitewater plays at winless Stout and Stevens Point plays at Superior. If they both win, it's a coin flip. If they both lose, Whitewater gets the #1 seed as they would be 2-0 vs Superior, finished higher than Stout.

Platttville 9-6
River Falls 9-6

Ironically,  both play each other at River Falls (River Falls won the 1st meeting)

Oshkosh 7-8
Eau Claire 6-9

Eau Claire plays at Oshkosh with Oshkosh already beating them on the road.

The four-team MIAA Tournament field is set, but seeds have some sorting out still.

#1 Calvin (11-2) (at Albion this week, but have #1 locked up)
Trine (9-4) (hosts Olivet this week)
Hope (9-4) (hosts Adrian this week)
Alma (8-5) (at Kalamazoo this week)

Trine holds the tiebreaker over both Hope (beating Calvin once) and Alma (going 2-0 vs. Albion).
Alma holds the tiebreaker over Hope (beating Calvin once).
Hope cannot win a tiebreak scenario.

#1 hosts #4 and #2 hosts #3 for the semifinals on Thursday, February 26.
Finals are played at highest remaining seed on Saturday, February 28.

NCAC update:

The NCAC plays a traditional 8-team format (1v8, 2v7, etc.) As a 10-team league, the 9th and 10th place teams do not qualify for the tournament.

That having been said, allow me to introduce Mr. Wally Wabash.

Quote from: wally_wabash on February 18, 2015, 11:44:30 PM
Standings - bolded teams are locked into their seeds:
1. OWU 15-2
2. Wooster 13-4
3. Wabash 11-6
4. DePauw 9-8
5. Wittenberg 8-9
6. Denison 7-10
6. Allegheny 7-10
8. Oberlin 6-11
9. Kenyon 5-12
10. Hiram 4-13

Kenyon and Hiram are eliminated.  Oberlin will play at OWU.  The other three quarterfinals are TBD.

Saturday's games:
OWU @ DePauw
Allegheny @ Denison
Wooster @ Oberlin
Kenyon @ Wabash
Hiram @ Witt

Scenarios as best I can tell:
- DePauw clinches the 4th seed with a win over OWU.  If not...
- Witt clinches the 4th seed with a win over Hiram and would host DePauw in the quarters.
Meanwhile...
- The loser of Allegheny/Denison will be the 7th seed and play at Wooster in the quarters.
- The winner would play at Wabash unless Witt loses in which case...
   - Denison wins a tiebreak with Witt (h2h split, Denison 1-1 vs. OWU, Witt 0-2 vs. OWU) so Denison @ DePauw, Witt @ Wabash
   - Witt wins a tiebreak with Allegheny (h2h split, both 0-2 vs. OWU and Wooster, both 1-1 vs. Wabash, Witt 2-0 vs. DPU, Allegheny 0-2 vs. DPU) so we get Witt @ DePauw and Allegheny @ Wabash

Corrections appreciated.   :)

NJAC:

#5 Rowan (16-9, 10-8) (58)
@ 2/22 3 PM
#4 Rutgers-Newark (17-8, 11-7) (83)
Winner onto #1 TGHIJGSTO (20-5, 14-4) February 24 @ 7

#6 NJCU (12-13, 9-9) (74)
@ 2/21 3 PM
#3 TCNJ (15-10, 11-7) (60)
Winner onto #2 Mr. William Paterson (19-6, 13-5) February 24 @ 7

#4 Rutgers-Newark (18-8, 11-7) (54)
@ 2/24 7 PM
#1 TGHIJGSTO (20-5, 14-4) (70)

#6 NJCU (13-13, 9-9) (61)
@ 2/24 7 PM
#2 Sir William Paterson (19-6, 13-5) (63)
Finals are February 27 at the highest remaining seed after semifinal play.

#2 Mr. William Paterson (20-6, 13-5) (61)
@ 2/27 7 PM
#1 TGHIJGSTO (21-5, 14-4) (65)

Richard Stockton is 1st in the Atlantic Region, William Paterson is 2nd and Rutgers-Newark is 5th.  I think Richard Stockton is the only "safe" team and I say that very loosely, the other 5 teams probably including William Paterson, even if they lose in the finals to Stockton need to win the tournament to get in.
William Paterson will be the first team on the board up from the Atlantic and in 19 rounds I think they'll be able to get into the tournament.  No bubble busting from this conference as TGHIJGSTO was getting in and Paterson probably is as well.

CUNYAC:

#8 CCNY (8-16, 3-13) (55)
@ 2/22 5 PM
#1 Baruch (18-6, 14-2) (72)

#5 York (NY) (13-12, 8-8) (70)
@ 2/22 1 PM
#4 Staten Island (17-8, 11-5) (67) (the rematch of last years championship game in the 4/5 game)

#6 Hunter (9-16, 6-10) (77)
@ 2/22 1 PM
#3 Lehman (17-8, 12-4) (79)

#7 John Jay (5-20, 4-12) (68)
@ 2/22 1 PM
#2 Brooklyn (20-5, 12-4) (83)

#1 Baruch (19-6, 14-2) (52)
vs. 2/25 6 PM
#5 York (NY) (14-12, 8-8) (50)

#3 Lehman (18-8, 12-4) (70)
vs. 2/25 8 PM
#2 Brooklyn (21-5, 12-4) (80)

#1 Baruch (20-6, 14-2) (90)
vs. 2/27 8:30 PM
#2 Brooklyn (22-5, 12-4) (83.  2 overtimes)

According to the Lehman schedule on the d3hoops page the semifinals take place February 25 and the final is February 27, both of those games will be taking place @ CCNY.

Baruch is 3rd in the Atlantic, Brooklyn is 4th, and CSI is 7th.  Probably only a 1 bid league no matter who wins.  I'd watch out for CSI; they got waxed twice this year by Lehman including as recently as Tuesday night but lost by 4 @ Baruch and beat Brooklyn & York.  They are also hot winners of 10 of their last 13.
Baruch likely the only team as Brooklyn probably misses the NCAAs.

Brooklyn beat Baruch this week.  Will Pat lost too. TGHIJGSTOTM is #1 in the region. I think they are safe. I think the CUNYAC is a 1-team league.

Do you know what the tie breaker rules are for the HCAC?

This is from the 2012 season so it's a little old but should get the job done. Pretty sure the first two tiebreakers are still accurate. It'd be nice if all conferences would just post all tiebreakers in an easy to find place.
QuoteTie Breakers for Seeding
1. Head to head competition. When there are multiple teams tied, this head to head process will apply the total number of wins and losses among these teams in an attempt to break the tie.
2. Competition against rank/order of regular season standings
3. The NCAA Quality-of-win-index
4. Win-loss percentage in-region
5. If these four steps do not break the tie then a coin toss or lottery will be used.

Tie Breaker Notes:
1. If the final standings have more than one tie then lower ties are resolved first
2. If there are multiple ties for a position the tie breaker process must start from the beginning each time a team is eliminated from the tie.
3. If there are more than two teams in an unbreakable tie than a lottery will be used
to determine the seed positions.
4. The commissioner will administer coin tosses or lottery draws.

Capital Athletic, first round 2/24, semifinals 2/26, finals 2/28; all games @ higher seed:

Needs Sunday to sort out the final 3 spots.  St. Mary's is #1, Salisbury is #2 and Wesley is #5.  The #3 seed will come down to Marymount or Christopher Newport.  If Marymount wins @ Frostburg State Sunday they will be the 3 seed and CNU will be the 4 seed; if Marymount loses CNU is the 3 seed and Marymount is the 4 seed.  The final spot (6 seed) also comes down to the Marymount/Frostburg game: a Frostburg win gives Frostburg the 6th seed, a loss will give the 6th seed to Mary Washington.  First round is 2/24, semifinals 2/26 and finals 2/28, all games played @ the highest seed.

#6 Mary Washington (7-18, 7-11) (63)
@ 2/24 8 PM
#3 Marymount (19-6, 13-5) (61)
Winner to #2 Salisbury (18-7, 14-4) 2/26 8 PM

#5 Wesley (12-13, 10-8) (81)
@ 2/24 7:40 PM
#4 Christopher Newport (18-7, 13-5) (87)
Winner to #1 St. Mary's (MD) (20-4, 16-2) 2/26 7 PM

#6 Mary Washigton (8-18, 7-11) (52)
@ 2/26 8 PM
#2 Salisbury (18-7, 14-4) (59)

#4 Christopher Newport (19-7, 13-5) (83)
@ 2/26 7 PM
#1 St. Mary's (MD) (20-4, 16-2) (69)

#4 Christopher Newport (20-7, 13-5)
@ 2/28 4:30 PM

Centennial Conference:

Opening round game is #5 McDaniel (14-11, 9-9) (45)
@ 2/25 7:30 PM
#4 Gettysburg (14-11, 10-8) (53)
Winner goes to Baltimore to play #1 Johns Hopkins (22-3, 16-2) Friday, February 27 @ 6 PM

#3 Dickinson (20-5, 13-5) and #2 Franklin & Marshall (20-5, 13-5) also receive bye's to Baltimore and will face each other in the second semifinal 2/27 at 8 PM.

#2 Franklin & Marshall (20-5, 13-5) (68)
vs. 2/27 6 PM
#3 Dickinson (20-5, 13-5) (82)

#4 Gettysburg (15-11, 10-8) (67)
@ 2/27 8 PM
#1 Johns Hopkins (22-3, 16-2) (80)

#3 Dickinson (21-5, 13-5)
@ 2/28 7 PM
#1 Johns Hopkins (23-3, 16-2)

Dickinson likely sewed up a pool C bid along with Hopkins.  Gonna be a stressful 72 or so hours for F&M and their fans they could go either way.

Whitewater won the coin flip.

Tuesday, February 24
First Round
UW-Whitewater (#1) - Bye
UW-Stevens Point (#2) - Bye
UW-Oshkosh (#5) at UW-Platteville (#4), 7 p.m.
UW-Eau Claire (#6) at UW-River Falls (#3), 7 p.m.

Thursday, February 26

The CCIW tourney will be in Rock Island.  Augie (#1) will meet the winner of NPU @ NCC (#4).  Elmhurst is at IWU to determine #2, but they are assured of meeting in the other semi whoever wins this week.

Definitely a key game to see who the "home team" will be in Rock Island. If Elmhurst loses, it will be tough for them to win as the away team against IWU, especially two games in a row. As we know, home teams generally have the advantage!  ??? ;D

The Titans rather decisively took care of that tonight, 96-66. ;D

Alas, Gregory Sager's Vikings fell to NCC, and will turn in their unis. :(  Juwan Henry was out-of-this-world great with 34 points (more than half their total until the final minutes), but no teammate stepped up today.

NCAC Tourney is set, thanks to the Old Tigers losing to Hiram, meaning they have to travel to face the New Tigers!

First round Tuesday:

Oberlin (8) @ OWU (1)
Wittenberg (5) @ DePauw (4)
Denison (7) @ Wooster (2)
Allegheny (6) @ Wabash (3)

Semi-finals Friday, Finals Saturday at OWU [provided that OWU defeats Oberlin Tuesday. OWU did just that last week by 30, so...but for the sake of accuracy, I felt I should add this...dc]

Tie game, CCC #1 Nichols college with the ball.  Senior Matt Langadas drives, pulls up from the FT line, sinks a shot with two seconds left.  #8 UNE calls time out - 3/4 court pass to the top of the three point line, tip pass to the corner, dude knocks down a three with a guy in his face at the buzzer.  Pretty phenomenal.  Pat, you gotta get that video - both shots were pretty clutch.

Can't let you guys forget about the SLIAC....  no, not a big deal on the national scene, but very competitive within the conference, a heck of a lot of fun to follow and watch..

This year's race, muddled by inconsistent levels of play by the more talented teams, and some incredible one-night performances by the weaker teams, came down to the last night, as the Webster-Greenville result would determine both the first place tourney host, and the 4th place team...

With Webster's win:
Webster earns the No 1 seed, despite a 3 way tie among them, MacMurray, and Spalding.  Fontbonne came on strong in the 2nd half of the season to earn the 4th seed.

Semis at Webster on Friday night, Championship Game Saturday night...

GNAC results from Thursday.

#1 Albertus 81, # 4 St. Joe 51

#2 JWU 77, #6 Emmanuel 43

Albertus host JWU on Saturday  at 1pm. Albertus won both regular season games by a combined 5 points; hitting a buzzer beater at home and converting on a lay up with less than 2 seconds on the road. Should be a good game.

This is essentially the first round of the NCAA tournament for these two teams.

NECC Championship Game

#2 Regis 74, #1 So Vermont 72

Thrilling last 5 minutes. Regis was up 12 with 3 minutes left to go in the game. So Vermont tied it twice in the last 30 seconds. Including, tying the game with 8.6 seconds left at 72, but Regis executed on a wonderful in bound play leaving a guy opening for an easy lay-up forcing So vermont to foul. Regis hits two free throw to advance to their first ever NCAA tournament. I think they have only had a program for about 4 or 5 years.

Congrats to them!

Calvin comes back from a big deficit to win by one - it might have been their first lead of the game - I know they went down like 15-0 to start.

It was a 13-0 start, with the Hope lead topping out at 15. Jordan Brink's jumper with five seconds left was the winner and gave Calvin their first lead of the game.

Ben Gardner actually had a good run at the basket after a timeout following Brink's bucket but he lost control of the ball and never got a shot off.

I took a look for all the conference champs that weren't a top 3 seed...
6- LaGrange
4- Alvernia, DePauw, Keene St

And teams that are still alive
6- Bluffton (vs 1 Defiance), Hendrix (vs 1 Rhodes), Wesleyan (vs 5 Amherst)
5- Amherst (vs 6 Wesleyan)
4- Bethel (vs 1 St Thomas)
