Title: NESCAC Picks
Post by: WilltheMan on September 11, 2015, 02:12:37 PM
Conference games only.  W-L-T, I'll keep a running total.  Scores if you like but no bonus for correct score.  If interested just post your picks.

We can probably combine this topic into the Nescac topic to make it easier. Also, since you are doing this and keeping track of everything lets do it like we do the premier league picks....You pick the game of the week including mid-week conference games and you need to keep track of correct picks / correct scores and figure out a point system and then keep the standings.BIG RESPONSIBILITY but I am glad you volunteered. Also, lets make it interesting and compettitve

Yeah my ambition was limited; scores take it from a quick tabulation into something more.  I'm having NCAA hoop pool flashbacks....

I think keeping this separate and posting results in NESCAC thread once a week might work well.  Contained here is much easier way to tabulate without sifting through pages of text.  If out of conference is wanted I have no problem including......

Amherst v Bowdoin       0-0     Bowdoin is out to prove that 2014 was no fluke and I believe they matchup with Amherst this year better than ever. I believe Nescac is wide open this year and any of 5 teams could win it.

Midd v Conn                 1-1       Midd will not have frosh for this game due to an orientation thing they do every year which has got to drive the coaches NUTS.  Conrad nets one on set piece and Devlin snags one back.

Hamilton v Bates          1-0     I believe Hamilton bounces back and gets a much needed Nescac win. This game means VERY MUCH to both teams as a win here will help either to sneak into the Nescac play-offs as the #8 seed. I do not see either team qualifying and would be a quick exit for either if they snuck in.

Trinity v Williams          2-1  Trinity has been a thorn in Williams side for the past 7-8 years, especially at home. Williams looked very motivated and in form against Oneonta. I am still not convinced of Williams midfield defending.  Trinity coach Pilger always has some great set piece's and I believe Bednarek will catch Williams napping to win it.

Tufts v Colby                 1-0  Tufts will most definitely not score 5 goals against Colby, I believe they will struggle a bit to get 1 or 2. Colby will be organized enough to keep Tufts at bay but will generate few if any chances of their own. Tufts looked very impressive and in-form against Endicott and they will dominate possession and come away with the W in this one.

Haverford v Wesleyan     0-1 This is an unknown for me as I do not know much about Haverford yet this year. Wesleyan will slog it out and play how Wesleyan always plays. Cowie-Haskell or the Frosh will sneak one in to win it.

First week:

All Nescac           5
FourMore           5
Off Pitch           5
1970 Nesc   4
OldCard           4
JumpJoy           4

Mr Right           1

Question is how to handle ties.  Without objection correct ties will receive 2 points.  The alternative was a wrong tie is a 1/2.  Works out in similar fashion.  be nice if we can get a few more, can pro rata add anyone this week.

Okay, I am gettiing thoroughly confused now.  Let's just merge these two threads - it will be too difficult policing people to post on the correct NESCAC thread.

ANyhow, Willitheman, you forgot to include my picks - got 5 correct.  Heart told me to pick Wes, but head overruled and picked a tie instead.  Revised standings are as follows:

All NESCAC - 5
FourMore - 5
Corazon - 5
Offpitch - 5
1970 Nescac - 4
OldCard - 4
Jump4joy -4

Not sure how you're calculating, but I had 4 wins correct and predicted ties for Midd-Conn and Wesleyan-Haverford.

A suggestion on the NESCAC picks...1 point for a correct pick with a bonus point (or a bonus 0.5 point?) for correctly picking a tie (which is a pretty ballsy thing to do).

Should we pick out of conference games?  We already have, with Wes and Haverford so we might want to continue to do that, although I personally only care about the NESCAC games and there would be less chance of us forgetting to submit our picks.

How about from here on out, only league games but count the Wes-Haverford game - or we can eliminate the Wes-Haverford from calculations?  Several posters were not counted the first go around (NCAC, me, perhaps others ...)

Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things but it was pretty clear to me at least that this was conference games only or I would have picked the Wesleyan game ...

The very first three words on the thread were "conference games only".

Well, it doesn't get any clearer than that!

Let's revise scoring and pick league games only as far as this contest goes. That is my preference anyhow, and I assume will be for most on the board.

Didn't see your picks I assume they were in regular thread.  No worries I'll add you to exel sheet.  Less confusing for me, one place for picks, (here) conference only(simple) and I agree correct tie call gets you 2 points instead of one.  If it's close going into last week we can use scores in last week as a tiebreak.  If anyone wants to be more elaborate, by all means take this over, I won't be insulted!  I'll put up a tasty bottle of wine as a door prize........a little added incentive.

I would keep the picks here w/ no conversation. Also, if someone picks a draw and it was not a draw then you get a loss. Vice-versa if someone picks a loss and it is a draw you get a loss

Not sure why picking a tie counts for more than picking a win.

Why not 1 point for picking correct result (who wins/loses or ties), and a bonus point for picking exact score? Isn't that how OffPitch does it for the BPL picks thread?
Title: Re: NESCAC Picks
Post by: Corazon on September 14, 2015, 02:11:44 PM
My thinking, and I'm certainly not set on this, is that since ties don't happen very often, you would be incentivizing folks to predict a tie.  Seems more fun than just picking a winner or loser for every game (more statistically likely).

I agree. This is how we should go as ties are fun to pick. I am not sure why they would not be as fun?

2-1-0 conference only, that's how I'm doing it.....to many cooks.  last offer if anyone wants to take over now is your chance.

PS A tie is less frequent than W/L and in truth should be more like 2.8 points but lets just leave it at 2 and move along to the weekly picks.....

You have objected 3-4 times, don't submit then.  Only reason this has been getting squirrely are the objections.  Very simple to keep track of, ----your in last with one point anyway, so ya know drop.

thanks.

Amherst 1 - Williams 0       Williams still finding their way.

Midd 1 - Bowdoin 0        Midd has already put up 18 goals this year, unfortunately 16 of them were vs. Green Mtn and Colby-Sawyer.  Bowdoin has been blanked in 3 of their last 4

Colby 2 - Trinity 1          Trinity has not won in their last 4 and is in midst of a 4 game conf. road swing.

Wesleyan 1 - Bates 0       Can Wes master Bates tough D?  Bates has only yielded 1 goal in 5 games.

Conn 2 - Hamilton 0       Hamilton's streak of scoring in 3 consecutive games comes to an end in New London.

Tufts 1 - Brandeis 0       Having already dispatched Conn, Tufts avenges their only other loss from last year.

Williams 0 - Bates 0       Dispirited by Saturday losses, Bates plays not to lose and Williams complies.

Hey Will,

If everyone bailed after a run-in with Mr. Right, there wouldn't be anyone left on these boards. Best thing to do is to not get too offended at anything he says. You have to admit, it is more interesting with him around. Anyhow, you're an obviously intelligent and knowledgeable poster and would be good to have you around. + karma to you.

Best,

Corazon (basking in the glow of correctly picking the Tufts-Wes tie)

I realize that I'm hopping into this one quite late, but better late than never:

Saturday
Wesleyan 2-0 Colby - Colby's defensive issues aside, the Cardinals are just too strong for the Mules.
Tufts 2-1 Middlebury - Make no mistake, Tufts is a wounded animal. Conrad at 6'5" will match up to Sullivan and Coleman, and maybe even gets on the scoresheet. However, being at home gives Tufts the edge in what I'd bill as the standout fixture of the weekend.
Trinity 1-1 Bowdoin - Both teams have been rather anemic offensively, though the Bantams picked up a solid road win over Wheaton. Bowdoin has yet to find its stride, but I think will hold its own on the road.
Hamilton 0-2 Amherst - Despite its win over Tufts last weekend, which given the context has to be one of the biggest in program history, Hamilton won't be able to stop the Amherst machine. Jeffs are rolling.
Conn. College 2-1 Bates - This is the one that I struggled with the most, but I think 2-1 is fair. Bates is the enigma of the NESCAC - they started 5-1-1 and even boasted a couple of decent road wins, only to follow it up with losing at home to Trinity. I must say I saw that coming - they got flattened 5-0 by Wesleyan, so even though they beat Williams there are still a lot of questions to be answered. Anyway, I've been impressed by Conn. when I've watched them this fall, and I think they're just too strong for the Bobcats.

Sunday
Wesleyan 1-0 Middlebury - Midd. will be tired from its tight game against Tufts, which, combined with the travel, gives the Cardinals the edge. Cowie-Haskell will prove the difference with either a goal or an assist.

Wes 2 Colby 0 -- Wes knows they are in the mix but with no room for a loss here.

Midd 1 Tufts 1 -- Brutal game to pick.  Want to pick Tufts but their confidence may be reeling a bit and I can't see Midd losing 2 games in 2 days.  Brutal back-to-back for Midd with Tufts away and then Wes away very next day.

Bowdoin 2 Trinity 1 -- Trinity showed a spark of life and now time for that to flicker out.

Amherst 4 Hamilton 0 -- Amherst is feeling themselves distancing from the pack and setting sights on national goals as they march towards a #1 ranking.

Conn 3 Bates 1 -- Conn is starting to see themselves as a NCAA team, and the combination of hunger and growing confidence will prove to be too much for the Bobcats.

Wes 2 Midd 1 2nd OT -- Another very tough game to call but Wes needs two wins this weekend to thrust themselves into the NCAA bid discussion with more very difficult games still ahead.

With both teams on the slide, Williams @ RPI could be an interesting one. Williams struggles on turf and RPI can stretch them out. However, RPI relies on set pieces, and against a bigger Williams could cause problems. Neither teams having success finding the back of the net. Good chance for each side to head back in the right direction.

Don't see either side winning at the moment. 1-1.

Conn 1 Amherst 1 ---very physical game, but somehow the Camels get a point, although it will be very difficult on the Lord Jeffs home pitch.  Conn has played them close with 2 ties and 2 close losses in the last 5 years (except the juggernaut Amherst team of 2012 which won decidedly).  Problem for Conn could be lack of depth vs Amherst today.

Amherst 2-1 Conn - Even though the Jeffs are the vastly stronger team, I think Conn. will get on the board against Amherst.

Non-conference matchup (just for kicks):
Tufts 3-1 Gordon - Like Endicott proved, CCC sides are capable of nicking a goal against Tufts' defense. That said, Tufts has too much for the visitors.

Saturday

Colby 0-2 Amherst - This is Colby's cup final, and they'll be up for it no doubt especially being at home. But the Jeffs are just too good, and they'll score a routine 2-0 victory on the road.

Wesleyan 2-1 Williams - Wesleyan will be reeling after Midd's smash-and-grab win last Sunday. Cowie-Haskell is a great player and will prove tough for the Ephs backline. Williams is still a bit inconsistent - winning at RPI and then tying away to Endicott - and I think Wes. is the more complete team.

Bowdoin 1-0 Hamilton - Were this at Hamilton, I might fancy the Continentals given their big win over Tufts earlier this year (yes, I know the Jumbos threw that one away and rotated some players.) But Bowdoin being at home and with spirits high after Monday's performance, it's hard to see Hamilton getting a result on the road.

Middlebury 1-1 Trinity - A tough one that neither can really afford to lose. Despite a relatively weak out-of-conference schedule that I often harp on, Midd. is the better team, but Trinity will do enough to get a point.

Bates 0-2 Tufts - Having Tufts, Amherst, and Midd. all at home is certainly a boon for Bates. But the Jumbos are just too good for the host Bobcats, and Knoth and Merchant are not on the same level as Majumder and Kayne. Will I have to eat my words? Time will tell, but I still think Tufts gets this one somewhat comfortably, although Bates' fighting spirit has been evident this season.

Sunday

Bates 1-2 Amherst - Yes, yes, I know I said Bates would score. Amherst's defense has been imperious, but I think they'll go complacent for a second against the Bobcats' opportunistic offense. Bates will show up for this one and, the Wesleyan game aside, has shown that they don't go down without a fight. However, they're untested against the (IMHO) three best sides in the league, and - add in that they'll have been worn down by Tufts the day previous - and Amherst will walk away with a pretty comfortable win.

Bonus:
Babson 1-2 Williams - Two great coaches and both of their teams are reeling - Williams hadn't dropped points against a CCC opponent in quite some time before Tuesday, and Babson got shellacked at Bowdoin. Kaplan is a solid CF and is coming off a goal against the Polar Bears. That said, I fancy Williams to get the job done away - they seem to be playing better away where there's less pressure, as they're 3-1-1 away vs. 1-3-1 home.

Bowdoin 2-0 Colby - Mules show up for this one but Bowdoin is at home and will get the job done. Look for them to make a late push to keep moving up in the NESCAC standings.

Trinity 1-2 Wesleyan - Wesleyan is the better team and will perhaps feel less pressure playing away from home.

Williams 2-0 Hamilton - Far from a barn-burner, but I think that Williams' confidence and recent form is simply too good for Hamilton.

Williams 1-1 Tufts - Williams will be fired up for this game at home, and rightly so after some big wins, but I just don't see Tufts losing this game. Don't see them winning it, either, to be fair, and that's why I'm going for the draw.

Hamilton 1-0 Colby - Both teams have had some hard-luck results this year, but I think that Hamilton being at home will just about give them the edge.

Conn 1-0 Bowdoin - Much like the above match between Hamilton and Colby, Conn and Bowdoin are about the same ability-wise, although Conn is sitting at a superior 9-3-1 to Bowdoin's 6-3-3. Despite both teams being equal in ability IMHO, I'm giving this one to Conn, especially being at home.

Bates 0-0 Middlebury - Bates held firm last weekend against Tufts, although I think that had more to do with Tufts being awful up front than the Bobcats' excellent defense. That said, they were quickly exposed by Amherst on Sunday. But Midd has blown hot and cold this year offensively, and I think they're ripe to drop points on the road in Lewiston this weekend.

Amherst 3-0 Wesleyan - Amherst is just too good. Boring, I know, but what else can you say. If Wesleyan pulls an upset it will be the shock result of the decade.

Conn 1-0 Wesleyan - Wesleyan needs this game, but Conn will be out for revenge after losing its first match on home turf all year to Bowdoin.
Middlebury 1-2 Williams - Williams has been much better away from home than the opposite, and they have shown the ability to score on occasion, so I fancy the Ephs to pull the upset.
Tufts 2-1 Bowdoin - Bowdoin has shown the ability to score in the past few games, beating Babson 4-1 and a resolute Conn side away. Still, Tufts is too strong, and will take care of business at Kraft.
Trinity 0-2 Amherst - Trinity will show up for this one but Jeffs will get a routine 2-0 road win.
Colby 0-0 Bates - Both teams have been rather sporadic offensively, although Bates is more potent and needs a win to have any shot at the NESCAC playoffs. Still, I see this one ending 0-0.

Middlebury 2  -  Trinity 0

Midd extends winning streak to 7 games.  Midd outshot Trinity 21-8 in their prior meeting and is undefeated at home.

Amherst 2  - Wesleyan 0

Wesleyan has dropped 5 straight games during which time they have been outscored 12-3.  They lost to Amherst 5-0 just last weekend.  The current Vegas over/under on yellow cards is 8.

Conn 2  -  Williams 1

Williams put up 11 goals in 2 games vs Babson and Colby -- and hasn't scored since.  Conn has yielded 14 goals in conference, by far the most of the top 4 seeds.  Williams finishes 7-7-2 for their first non-winning season since ?? (all winning seasons back through at least 1982)

Tufts 1  -  Bowdoin 0

Bowdoin prevailed in last year's tournament despite not scoring a goal in either the semis or championship game.  In the dry-run for this game Wednesday, Bowdoin succeeded in playing Tufts to a scoreless tie.  Bowdoin would clearly like to take this to PKs Saturday, but Majumder breaks through.

Guys, given that we're in the home stretch, let's agree on playoff scoring upfront.

For games that go into PKs, they are technically considered ties but in our case, I think we need to just give 1 point to correctly picking whomever ends up advancing. Agree?

Middlebury 1-0 Trinity - Trinity put up the performance of the season against Amherst. Coming back from 1-0 down was impressive, but what was even more impressive was that they held on for the draw, and I would even argue looked slightly the better team from the second half on. But Midd is too strong and will get things done on their home turf.

Amherst 2-1 Wesleyan - They say that the form book goes out the window in the playoffs, and I think Wesleyan will put up more of a fight than most would expect. But Amherst will be rejuvenated from their first dropped points of the season, and will edge this one, with the performance being dominant.

Conn 2-1 Williams - Aside from dropping a clanger at home to Bowdoin, Conn has looked very good this year. They rebounded from their first home loss with a nice 1-0 victory over Wesleyan. You never know which Williams team is going to show up, and while they've notched some impressive results - beating RPI away and Babson 7-2 on the road - I think Conn's consistency has to see them favorites.

Tufts 1-0 Bowdoin - I was very tempted to say that this would go to PKs, with Tufts edging it, but I think the Jumbos will get it done on their home turf. They'll know they very well could have won the previous meeting, and won't take the Polar Bears lightly. Still, could very well see Bowdoin springing the upset in this one.

I agree.  Also Corazon, could you check your picks from this week and confirm that you really have 35 points.  I've lost track of scoring and can't recall whether we're giving an extra point for correct score.  You only had two correct picks from Tues./Wed. games, so I'm not sure whether you're at 34 or 35.  Thanks.

I've been trying to keep track - 1 point for correct result, bonus point for correctly picking a tie - based on what Willtheman put in place. Admittedly, I don't spend a lot of time on this, so it is quite possible that there is an error or two.  If you find one, please post an updated standings.

The scoring is correct. Yes, I only picked 2 games correctly, but one of them was the Bates - Colby tie. Thus, I got 3 points.

Looking at Blooter's post, we can wait until the completion of tomorrow's games before picking the final (since we don't actually know the teams yet), unless we agree to make all predictions before the first game and live with whatever we pick.

I'm thinking the former, if we're going to be completely fair. The latter could be fun, though. Thoughts?

I gotta go with Bowdoin winning back to back titles. They are really playing well of late and Stevie Van Siclen is stepping up again at the right time. Besides a few chances in the 1st Half they really did not have much against Midd. Bowdoin gets it done today with 4-5 SOG but they are capitalizing on their chances. They have pitched 3 straight shutouts and even more impressive they have given up 1 GOAL in their last 6 GAMES. I was disappointed with Conn today but they didn't look ready to play. Bowdoin 1-0.
