Title: 2018 Non-Conference Games
Post by: bluestreak66 on December 18, 2017, 12:13:20 PM
So now that the 2017 season is over, it's time to start looking ahead to next season! :)
Obviously, conference schedules are mostly locked in.
Anyone have any info on non-conference games?

no official schedule release just yet but Hendrix will travel to Texas Lutheran, setting up a pivotal game for South Region rankings (and a potentially high-scoring affair).

I believe Wesley opens with Delaware Valley for the third straight season. That would be WCs lone non-con game.

that would be the kind of nonconference game UMHB likes, and next season the AQ returns so less concern about committee and more about winning the ASC

In the middle of this season Coach Pete actually said something was brewing up with UW-O but it hadn't been confirmed, hadn't heard any confirmation though.

W&L switches with RMC for the next 2 years, opening with Dickinson while RMC opens with JHU.

I'd assume W&L will play Sewanee week 2. Week 3 is unknown. The h&h with CMS is over and I don't think renewed though not positive, and Wash U is no longer an option as they move back into a conference. On the upside, W&L, and the ODAC schools overall, gain Ferrum to the conference this upcoming year, so only 1 of those extra slots needs to be filled.

The MAC adds an 11th member next year when Alvernia starts football. But, instead of eliminating the only non-conference game, the MAC is going to an unbalanced schedule where teams will play eight conference games and miss two conference opponents each year. So that leaves each of the MAC teams with two non-conference slots instead of one. It's possible that MAC teams fill each other's non-conference slots with games that don't count in the conference standings.

Del Val opens with Wesley in Dover and then goes on the road to Mass-Dartmouth for a weird one. The Aggies have a hard time finding willing dance partners within driving distance.

Hopefully the MAC manages that better than the PAC did.

It actually worked out for them as they got two teams into the 2nd round of the playoffs, had they played each other, only one team would have made it.

I'm not a fan of the unbalanced schedule. It's bound to play a factor in determining an AQ at some point, though maybe not next year. Assuming Del Val is still a contender for the title, the Aggies will still play Albright, Stevenson and Widener. The two they skip are FDU-Florham and Misericordia.

IMO that would be a wn win win. Win for UMHB and UWO bc playing a highly ranked team, help SOS and gauge where your team is at the beginning of the yea. A loss by either team wouldn't hurt either one bc their conferences will have automatic qualifiers. This would be big for D3 to have another game (like this years St Thomas/St Johns) to show the rest of the country that D3 football is relevant and exciting. I get tired f hearing people say that it's glorified HS football. I live in northeast Ohio where HS football is king and it doesn't compare with a good D3 game in my mind.

I guess Twitter is about as good as Wikipedia when it comes to confirmation but a coach from Albright College tweeted last night that they would be hosting UMHB next year and would be coming to Texas in 2019.

So far I'm aware Hobart will play SUNY-Morrisville, Brockport, Endicott and Shenandoah for OOC games. A 5th one is pending for Week 5, but hasn't been confirmed as of yet.

Thanks. I know sometimes unposted schedules still get circulated to fans, whether they're sent to alumni organizations or posted on social media, so I figured I'd check.

Thomas More has released its schedule for 2018.  Its a really tough one in terms of having 7 road games, distance to be traveled and who they have scheduled.

There are four games which really stand out:  At home vs. UW Plattville and Muhlenberg , road games Saint Johns and Huntington.

You'll also notice they have their first D2 opponent since the Dean Paul era.. when they host Lake Erie College.

Makes it even more impressive that Wesley was not only able to survive, but thrive, as an independent for so long.  But I bet they are as happy as a pig in slop to finally be in a conference!

I think Wesley did it for as long as was something close to survivable.  Even then, that last year as an independent the schedule's back half was all non D-3 games:
@ Concordia-Selma
@ Menlo
@ Virginia-Lynchburg
vs. College of Faith
@  Charlotte

That's kind of the point at which you can't keep doing it and really be part of D-III football, iyam.  Fast forward three years and it's even more difficult to get in-division games beyond Week 3.  Thomas More has done really, really well to get nine in-division games this year on somewhat short notice, but that's clearly not sustainable.  They'll have to find a league somewhere soon.
