In my annual bid to help the NCAA with their bracketing, here's the half of the bracket that I care about :
#1 Amherst (TCNJ,Skidmore/Roch Tech,Mt St Mary)
#2 Tufts (UNE,SUNYIT/Keuka,Cabrini)
#3 Scranton (Marymount,SUNY-Geneseo,Stevens)
#4 Bowdoin (St Joe(ME),FDU,SUNY-Old Westbury)
#5 Rochester (Juniata,MIT/WPI,Mt Aloysius/Hilbert)
#6 Montclair St (Gettysburg,Randolph-Macon/Emory & Henry,Mass-Boston)
#7 Messiah (CNU,Staten Island,Becker)
#8 Brooklyn (Roger Williams,Albright,Westfield St)
Sectional rounds (1-8 & 2-7; 3-6 & 4-5)

Fixed. We left off Gettysburg.
Understand long day for you guys.

This tournament is tainted no matter who wins. Not so much by what teams got into the tournament but more so by the teams that were left out. The at large bids are a joke this year. Pfffft
Ha. That's pretty funny. We predicted 18 of the 20 correct (19 of 21 really)... and you think the at-large bids are a joke? Honestly, look at the criteria and the numbers and how it all gets put together and make an argument. I'll read it. If valid, I'll let you know.

No need to disparage the school.or the education it provides. Tier 1 engineering school BTW. I may be passionate about my stances but I do not insulting the institutions or the athletes. Would you like to join me on some higher ground or would you like to continue in the mud?

I apologize for the unfair cheap shot. I spent my career teaching at Eastern Michigan U, which is TOTALLY in the shadow of U of Michigan just 8 miles down the road. I should show more empathy for others. Sometimes I just fail to rein in a predilection for cheap jokes. :-[
I just thought you had gone rather over the top in your defense of Mass-Dartmouth - not that I haven't done the same thing in defense of IWU from time to time over the years! ;)
We forgot to post this yesterday... or more realistically, didn't have time...

The NCAA Division III tournaments are set. We know which 128 teams will be playing for the national championship. But there were some surprises, maybe some controversy, and certainly a lot of questions.
On a special edition of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), Dave McHugh was joined by Ryan Scott as they answered questions, tried to understand some of the decisions made, and pointed to some of the more interesting games to watch.
Dave also had a chance to talk more in depth about one of the big stories in the men's bracket, Yeshiva. Men's coach Elliot Steinmetz discussed the team's first ever conference title, NCAA tournament berth, and some of the scheduling changes that will take place to accommodate the school's religious background.
Dave will also talked to the men's committee chairs, Tim Fitzpatrick (Coast Guard Athletics Director), later in the show.

Amen and God Bless!
Mass-Dartmouth did beat one ranked team in its run to the final eight last year, a definite upset and a nice run. But it didn't earn UMD a spot in the top 20, and that was appropriate.
Similarly, UMD didn't do enough to earn its way into the Top 25 this year. Or an at-large bid.
SidelineHero -- UMD being left out is unfortunate for UMD but it's hardly unexpected and it doesn't invalidate the national championship. Amherst beat UMD by 40 last year, remember? There's a huge gap between UMD and the national title contenders.
When you don't win the conference title, you have to rest on your out-of-conference accomplishments, and that definitely includes out-of-conference wins. Losing to Roger Williams means Roger Williams is on the table ahead of UMD for an at-large bid. And RWU got one. If UMD had won the conference title game, OR beaten RWU, it would have had a much better at-large resume. But this isn't your older brother's Little East, where the winner is a national title contender like Southern Maine or Eastern Connecticut was.
UMD being left out is no travesty.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the gap between UMD and the champion level teams. UMD played Tufts to the wire this year. Had that game been 60 seconds longer, UMD would have won. Tufts is in the championship talk now, no?

But the game wasn't 60 seconds longer and you can't make any assumptions that they would have just passed Tufts. Even scoring runs end in a game at some point.
Tufts isn't as strong as we all expected. Four losses this season is pretty surprising. If they were only two to Amherst, so be it. Yes, UMD has come a long way, but they need to start winning those games... not coming close honestly. Had they beaten Tufts... they probably also would have been ahead of RWU despite the head-to-head loss.

The Division III men's and women's national tournaments are set, teams are where they need to be, and practices underway. Now, it's just a matter of tipping off the games.
But before we tip them off, we need some final thoughts.
Tune in Thursday night to Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com) where Dave will talk to a number of guests about their programs and their chances in the NCAA tournament. You can't starting heading down the Road to Rochester or the Road to Salem without getting an idea of who may be joining you, either. Dave will give some insight on how some of the pods just may shake out as well.
Also, earlier in the day, Dave talked with Women's Basketball Nationall Committee chair Bobbi Morgan (also head coach at Haverford) and asked her a lot about the selection process and bracketing for this year's tournament. You can hear that special podcast here: http://bit.ly/2GUbfE0

The NCAA committee's lack of imagination never ceases to amaze me. Chicago squeaks into the NCAA field last year at 18-7, gets sent to a top 5-ranked St. Thomas site, beats Wartburg, then narrowly loses to UST in the final minute. This year, Chicago is a top 10 team with a 21-game winning streak, and the committee just lazily slots them right back in at top-10 ranked St. Thomas again, even as Chicago is the higher seed. The 4 teams in the pod could have just as easily been hosted by Chicago due to mileage, but the committee refused to have a 3rd central team host. That's fine if they don't get to host, but how about sending them literally anywhere except UST. Their reward for a great season was an equally crappy draw as last year. Lame.

There were only two or three people bracketing and they started after midnight. Rightly or wrongly, I think some of the problems came because there weren't enough eyes on the job, they didn't seem to practice bracket ahead of time, and they had already been working for ten hours on selections when they started the bracketing process.
That's eye opening!

The Sectional Round games are here. Soon 16 teams on both the men's and women's brackets will be whittled to eight ... and before we know it just four will remain.
Who will advance, who will fall short of the final weekend, and who is best prepared? Hard to answer all of those questions, but on Thursday's edition of Hoopsville Dave will have plenty of guests who will give us their insight on their programs.

Gordon,
Sorry that I missed u last nite in the Scranton press box; I had heard that u were going to be at Wartburg, so I didn't look u up even though I was only a few feet away. Enjoyed your commentary with Dean tonite during the sectional final.
Wow! Just looking at the Amherst box score: starters play whole game and hold Alex Leslie to 4 shot attempts and no points.
Congrats to Amherst, Wartburg, Thomas More and Bowdoin for making it to Rochester.
And congrats to those who vote in the women's top-25. All four teams are in the top five teams in the poll.
Thanks, Ronk. I love working with Dean.
I had a good time, even if the games were sort of duds.

The contrast with the men's FF could hardly be starker. There the HIGHEST ranked team was #24, with three of them being unranked (one was the highest ranked ORV, but two of them received ZERO votes)! :o
Parity on the men's side is insane. It is starting to show up on the women's side, but not nearly as deep right now. :)

Unranked (not even receiving votes) ETBU erases a 54-36 deficit at 9:38 in the 4th to close to 61-59 with 2:00 to play. Final #2 Wartburg wins 65-61 in the closest game in the Elite 8.

The Road to Rochester and Salem are nearly complete. Only thing left is to actually hit the road and get the teams, media, fans, and others to their respective championships.
It was a thrilling and, maybe, shocking Sectionals Weekend in Division III. For the women, quite a few exciting games, but four of the top five teams in the country advanced to the Championship Weekend.
Not so much on the men's side. Only one ranked team is headed to Salem. Two weren't even receiving votes in the last Top 25 poll. And two have never been to the final four. Only one host got out of their own gym by cutting down their own nets. It was crazy.
On Sunday night's episode of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), Dave and guests try and break down what happened this weekend and what we might be able to expect in Rochester and Salem. Who came up big, who had the bounces go their way, and more. Guests from four of the eight teams will also discuss their roads and initial thoughts on knowing they are two wins away from a national championship.

What's the story on the audio portion of the Bowdoin semi? Your play-by-play has only been on a few mins.

I'm not sure what the story was. I'm flattered that you think that was me doing the audio, but that's a guy from Turner named Brennan Gullick who's really, really good. I didn't have any role in the broadcast.
