It is that time of year - the leaves are turning to shades of Scarlet and Gold and the echo of a bell is ringing in the distance, approximately 28 miles from Greencastle. This post has a lot of good news for both DePauw and Wabash as the television coverage for this year's game has been announced.
This November's meeting between DePauw University and Wabash College will mark the 125th meeting in the historic football game known as the Monon Bell Classic, and for a second consecutive year one of America's oldest and most storied college rivalries will be televised by FOX Sports Indiana and streamed nationally on the FOX Sports app. The 125th game in the series, which began in 1890, will take place Saturday, November 10, in Crawfordsville, with kickoff slated for 1:07 p.m. (Eastern time).
The 125th Monon Bell Classic will be televised on FOX Sports Indiana and on FOX Sports Midwest or FOX Sports Midwest Plus. It will be streamed nationally to all users of the FOX Sports app, FOX Sports GO app, and at FOXSportsGO.com. The game will also be carried nationally, either live or on tape delay, by FOX College Sports.
"The partnership that our two schools began with FOX Sports last year resulted in a telecast that received rave reviews from alumni, parents, and others, and received an Emmy nomination," said Ken Owen, of DePauw. "We're thrilled to continue our relationship."
"Fans who attend the game at Wabash will enjoy a number of special features designed to celebrate the 125th game and the amazing history our two colleges share, but for those who can't attend on game day this is an exceptional platform with wide reach," said Jim Amidon of Wabash College.

Just posted on the Wabash website:
Cancer Treatment Centers of America Global, Inc.® to Sponsor the 125th Monon Bell Classic
Wabash College and DePauw University are excited to announce that Cancer Treatment Centers of America Global, Inc.® (CTCA) will be the presenting sponsor of the 125th Monon Bell Classic on November 10, 2018. The historic football rivalry will be televised live from Crawfordsville on Fox Sports Midwest beginning at 1:00 p.m. EST.
"This partnership brings together three great organizations and we are proud to welcome Cancer Treatment Centers of America to the best college football rivalry in the land," said Wabash President Gregory D. Hess.
"DePauw and Wabash have partnered to present our alumni and friends a national telecast of the game for four decades," said DePauw University President Mark McCoy. "We are honored to join with Cancer Treatment Centers of America to lift up our great institutions through this historic rivalry and celebrate those brave individuals who are fighting and beating cancer."
Wabash and DePauw first met on the gridiron in 1890 and have played continuously since 1911. In 1932, the Monon Railroad, also known as the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway, donated a 300-pound locomotive bell to the winner of the widely celebrated matchup.
"The students of Wabash and DePauw, two of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges, are changing the world, and I am proud to be counted among Wabash's distinguished alumni," said Richard J Stephenson (Wabash College Class of '62), founder and chairman of Cancer Treatment Centers of America. "Just as our victorious patients ring a bell after completing treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, so will the victor of the Monon Bell Classic. We are honored to be part of this historic event."
CTCA® was founded by Mr. Stephenson in 1988 following the death of his mother, Mary, a DePauw University graduate, who lost a long fight with bladder cancer. Stephenson vowed to change the face of cancer and, as a result, CTCA uses a personalized, patient-centered approach to cancer care, dedicated to tailoring a combination of precision cancer treatments and supportive therapies to address the needs of each patient.
"We identified extraordinary parallels when forming this partnership," said President Hess. "CTCA's integrative approach to treating cancer is similar to our schools' holistic approach to liberal arts education. And when we discovered that CTCA patients — surrounded by their entire care team — ring a bell when they complete treatment, we saw a natural fit with the pride DePauw and Wabash take when winning and ringing the Monon Bell."
The two schools will host CTCA Cancer Fighters at the game, survivors committed to helping others, who will have an opportunity to ring the storied Monon Bell at halftime along with Tom Runge, former Wabash director of alumni affairs and retired USAF colonel, himself a cancer survivor. The promotional theme created for the game recognizes the remarkable achievements of both Wabash and CTCA in their respective disciplines and their shared pursuit of victory: "Two Giants. One Fight."
Tickets for the Monon Bell game are now available for purchase. Both the Wabash and DePauw athletic sites have instructions and links. FYI - all Wabash tailgate sites available for purchase were sold out as of 3:00 PM yesterday (Monday, October 15).

Glad to see someone, albeit a caveboy, picked up my reins and started a Monon Bell thread for this year. I guess the thought of having to travel to Crawfordstucky really got me off my game. I can't wait to see some of you in a few weeks.
Also, this never gets old.

Typical Wally believing a Pancake is knocking someone down from behind.
Just so we are clear:
Block in the Back
ARTICLE 4. a. A block in the back is contact against an opponent occurring
when the force of the initial contact is from behind and above the waist.
When in question, the contact is at or below below the waist.
Holding. The hand(s) and arm(s) shall not be used to grasp, pull, hook,
clamp or encircle in any way that illegally impedes or illegally obstructs
an opponent.
PENALTY—10 yards Penalties for Team A fouls behind the neutral zone
are enforced from the previous spot.
Blocking in the Back
ARTICLE 6. A block in the back (other than against the ball carrier) is illegal.
PENALTY—10 yards. Penalties for Team A fouls behind the neutral zone
are enforced from the previous spot.
You probably also believe Rudy wasn't offsides.

Just read the Indianapolis Monthly article about the Bell game. The last 4 sentences sort of sums up a lot about the differences between the 2 schools. Mamma's boys can't guard the bell so they need the police to do it for them. Note: Wabash does not.
"The last successful heist was in 1998. Wabash students pulled off a daring raid on Halloween and brought the Bell back to Wabash. Today, when DePauw has possession, it places the Bell on a pressure sensor wired to the local police station. Wabash does not."

I was heist-adjacent at best.
I was sports editor of our student newspaper in the fall of 1998 and late on the evening (early in the morning) of the Halloween Heist, the staff of the paper had basically all but put the edition to bed when the EIC rolls into the office and announces "Gentlemen, we have the Bell!" It took us all a minute to grasp exactly what it was that he was saying, but needless to say we had to shuffle the entire edition to make room for very late breaking front page news. I know that we got art for the front page of that issue with the Bell in Wabash possession, but the Bell wasn't around for long that night. It was whisked away to parts unknown and didn't resurface until the Monon Bell chapel the Thursday before the game at which point our administration, having "found" the missing property after what I assume was an exhaustive weeks long search, did the right thing and returned the Bell to DePauw.
I always thought it would have been cool for the Great Eight who pulled off that heist to shed their cloaks of anonymity and give an oral history of the event on the 20 year anniversary, but alas, they remain nameless legends.

https://youtu.be/FfrQj0l6_xA (https://youtu.be/FfrQj0l6_xA) "Masterminds"
Wally, you will recall, I'm sure, that at the beginning of Monon Bell Chapel, 1998, a "group" paraded the Bell to much applause down the center aisle to a site near the stage. The Bell's clanger had been silenced because in the view of those involved in the heist they/Wabash did not yet deserve to ring it because Wabash had not won the game the previous year. The Wabash Dean of Students had been informed earlier in the day that the Bell would show up at Chapel. He called DPU to inform their administration that the Bell would be returned that day. He had promised shortly after DePauw found the Bell missing that he was confident it would be returned in plenty of time for DPU to prepare for the game. After Chapel the Bell was loaded into the Dean's van and driven south to the Montgomery/Putnam county line, about mid way from Crawfordsville to Greencastle. There the Bell was transferred to a DPU maintenance truck for transport back to DePauw.
And that's the rest of the story.
That was the same year that Coach Nick and staff stole the Wabash signs. The game was a runaway for the Tigers. DPU did not deny that they did this - even as, I recall, there was an agreement not to do so. I believe this was reported to the NCAA but no action was taken. This has always seemed to me a blemish on the integrity of the coach and university.
I can't help but think; what was it like on the Greencastle campus after the various successful heist attempts? I remember my sophomore year the group of Rhynies guarding the Bell fell asleep and a group of full Sphinx club members taught them a lesson by hiding the Bell behind some of the bushes next to the Chapel before waking them, inducing quite the panic. It was Thursday morning and the mood prior to Monon Chapel on campus was incredibly morose. When the Bell was brought into the Chapel it was quite a relief.
DePauw won the 1998 game 42-7. Yes, that was the year of the sign stealing. Wabash players were saying during the game that the DPU players were calling out what was coming just before the snap of the ball.
Indeed, the Wabash head coach complained to the NCAA, but the Wabash AD was unwilling (or perhaps there was no formal mechanism) to file a formal complaint. There were bitter feelings than usual at the time.
Was there an agreement not to steal signals from the sidelines? I think there were different interpretations from the two sides.
The 1998 DePauw win was #3 on their way to 5 in a row. The streak was broken in 2001--the year of "the Catch." Wabash then won 3 back to back to back. And from 2009 to 2015 Wabash took 7 consecutively, including in 2010 the first shut out for either team (47-0) since the 7-0 victory in the Mud Bowl of 1967.

Thanks for posting this reminder, "1837." Max Urick seemed to have a fascination with a "balanced" season - 3 wins, followed by two ties, and concluding with three straight losses - a perfect .500. As a rhynie at the 1970 edition, following a long night of running around a bonfire, this was a tough way to lose but certainly applauded the decision to go for a win. Really appreciate your historical posts.
