Non-Conference Opponents:
Retained (4): Dickinson, York (Pa.), Elizabethtown, Eastern Mennonite
Dropped (6): #9 Cortland State, #21 Johns Hopkins, #10 Montclair State, Misericordia, Whitworth, Hartwick
Added (6): Hobart, John Carroll, Salisbury, Ithaca, Penn State-Harrisburg, Muhlenberg
Lost three Top 25 teams and didn't gain any Top 25 teams. Hobart, John Carroll, Salisbury and Ithaca are each solid opponents, but collectively it would appear to be a weaker schedule based on last year. No opponents who finished ranked in the Top 25 last year, and only two who received any votes in the final poll. Only 4 opponents made last year's NCAA tournament, none advancing past the 2nd Round.

Thoughts:
- Looking forward to the RWU matchup as season opener.
- W&L is another great opening weekend test.
- Seems that they eased up the schedule a bit after last year's perhaps overly-ambitious slate. Aside from the usual UAA games plus the addition of W&L, many of the usual in-region suspects: Babson, Clark, WPI, Tufts, Wheaton (MA), MIT, Mass. Maritime, and Springfield. In-region swaps of WNE, Mitchell, and RWU for Gordon, Endicott, and Amherst (in no order). Even given last year's tough schedule I still do not think Brandeis would have made the NCAA tournament with an easier schedule — too many breakdowns defensively and a light midfield that lacked size and steel — but easing up a bit this year on the schedule will give them a better chance of getting back perhaps.
Thanks for doing this, FW.

Retained: Ohio Northern, Carthage
Dropped: Wesley, Stockton, Lake Forest, Millikin, Manchester, Marymount, Cleary, St. Mary-Woods,
Added: Chicago, North Park, Illinois Wesleyan, Wabash, Aurora, Transylvania, Heidelberg, Greenville, Alma
Note: the Oct. 2 match against fellow MIAA team Alma is not a conference match; that occurs on Oct. 22.
In Coach Dave Brandt's second season in charge, the schedule has definitely been strengthened. With Chicago and North Park you add two Top 25 teams that were title contenders in recent years. Wabash is a solid pick-up and better than any team that was dropped from the schedule. Illinois Wesleyan is coming off two of the best seasons in program history and also may be better than any team dropped from the schedule. Retained were the two strongest non-conference opponents, Ohio Northern and Carthage, with everyone else being replaced. That includes the two non-Division III opponents from last year: the sub-.500 NAIA team Clearly and the first-year men's program at St. Mary-Woods, a non-affiliated school that was transitioning from being a women's-only school. Alma, as a non-conference opponent, is very weak, but the next weakest non-conference opponent this year is probably better than at least four of last year's non-conference opponents. It's a pretty significant upgrade from one year to the next. Time will tell if the team has improved as much as the schedule has improved. A drop in winning pct. can be expected, but in the long-run it will help the program.
Also, Coach Brandt's son Danny, who served as his assistant at Hope last year, has been hired as an assistant coach for the men's team at Carnegie Mellon.

Dropped Case and Carnegie Mellon but picked up Colorado and Wheaton (Ill.). If Spalding can have a repeat of 2018, that will help Kenyon's SOS with minimal risk of picking up a loss.
How does the NCAC scheduling work that Kenyon has 3 home and 6 away matches?

@Flying Weasel -- re Kenyon's home/away imbalance -- I don't know how it might work in terms of conference, but the fact that Kenyon does not have lights so 7pm starts become impossible at a certain point in the fall could be a factor in scheduling home/away matches.
IIRC similar concern was expressed about Kenyon's lack of lights last year. Certainly having lights provides more flexibility but I think there are other NCAC schools that play all or almost all games during the day. I noticed the imbalance in Kenyon's schedule too. Nothing new really, at least in terms of the overall number of home and away tilts. I used to think it was to help with SoS before but that actually never seemed to pan out as expected. As a parent it was annoying to have so few home games, but I never heard that it had anything to do with a lack of lights. After all, Kenyon has managed to host multiple Sectional and 1st and 2nd round NCAA games in recent years as well as a Final Four in the more distant past. At any rate, my guess is that there is some correlation with inherit scheduling difficulties for games with DePauw, Wabash and Allegheny (and for them too). I can't recall Kenyon ever playing a night game in Greencastle or Crawfordsville but I could be wrong. The issue there is that any mid-week game -- day or night -- involves an overnight and missed classes, so Saturdays are better for those games, and making two separate trips to Indiana isn't optimal (while understanding that DePauw and Wabash have to make multiple trips East and Allegheny also has more of a burden than the Ohio schools). I'm glad DePauw and Wabash are in the NCAC and they add a lot, but I wonder if the administrations of those schools struggle with the viability. Centre, now in the South Atlantic, probably is just as doable or more so than the Indiana schools, and as an aside, if the NCAC was looking to add a school Centre would be high on my list.
Note: I was curious about Centre, thinking that Oberlin, Allegheny and maybe the Indiana schools would be an unrealistic stretch.....but over 8.5 hours from Danville to Conway, AR (Hendrix) and over 9 hours to Jackson, MS (Millsaps).

SOS should be improved with the addition of Amherst, Conn College, Endicott & possibly Western New England which had a solid team last year. Four NESCAC opponents are probably the most by any non-NESCAC team.

Wow, fair enough, Babo! I felt the last few years that they had scheduled a bit easier than in the past, but I guess they learned the hard way last year after being NEWMAC favorites and having their SoS/RvR keep them out of Pool C contention after that hard-luck NEWMAC final loss. I do feel like you can go too gung-ho on scheduling tough opponents (as I felt Brandeis did last year and, out of region, CWRU did for a while), the key is striking the balance in the middle between a solid schedule and one that your team can handle (easier said than done as foresight is much less than 20/20). Either way, I would agree that four out-of-conference NESCAC opponents is probably the most in New England.
I think you can look at the 2017 Capital season - and OWU for years - as proof that strong schedules with a winning record vs ranked is hard to pass on (for post season committees). And given the changes in strength of teams we know a preseason schedule may appear tougher than it plays out. So kudos to the teams challenging their squads.

I continue to be impressed with Coach Singleton. He's transformed W&L from a good ODAC team to a good National team. Not quite able to reach the top tier in the country, but consistently on the doorstep. The OOC improvements have been real and continue to provide a challenge. Every team is either from a very good conference, Emory and Brandeis in the UAA and Willy Pat in the NJAC, or a conference leader, JHU, Ogelthorpe, Mary Washington. The lone exception is CNU who had an uncharacteristically bad year last year.
What does "lower tier UAA school" mean vis-a-vis Brandeis?

The way I read it, I think he meant that they finished near the bottom of the UAA last year, which is a fair point.
That being said, if I was mistaken and it was intended to represent a more long-term view, I would hardly call six consecutive NCAA appearances, two Final 4s, and a UAA title in the last 7 years "lower tier."
Of course, we all know I'm not biased. ;)

That's how I took it as well, particularly since he said that Emory was at the bottom of the UAA. Of course, they did finish last, but that doesn't mean that they weren't pretty good, since all the UAA teams were pretty good. And that was jknezek's point: when W&L is playing an OOC game against a team that wasn't at the top of its conference, it's usually a good team anyway because the conference it's in is strong.

Bingo. Brandeis and Emory were both good teams last year. But they finished where they finished in a brutal conference.

Fair.
It was interesting because 'Deis was looking like it could turn a corner after the Emory game last year, but then they went 0-4-1 down the stretch. There do seem to be some good FY players coming in (one from Maine!) so I am hopeful even if they will be a young side. From what I heard, it did not sound like Nardizzi was expected to return, which is a shame but not unexpected — in my opinion he did look good in spurts technically but did not seem to have the strength nor the work rate that is standard of Brandeis forwards. They will have to find the goals from somewhere.
I am looking forward to the W&L game. Reminds me of when 'Deis played Haverford on the opening weekend of 2016 — high quality side from out of conference. As for W&L, I really thought they were a solid side last year (Sweet 16 potential or more) and just got unlucky 1. having a tough draw against Hopkins in the NCAAs and 2. being the better side in the game IMHO but losing on PKs. A bit of luck and I think they could have made it to the second weekend.
* on my earlier post, should be two UAA titles, one outright

I had heard that, too, but didn't quite believe it because it would make four schools in four years (NC State, UNC Wilmington, Brandeis, and, from what I understand, Framingham State). It will be interesting to see what pans out...

Looking forward to it as well. Always nice to get these interesting and different match ups. Last year was a tough NCAA draw but the game was pretty seesaw and I have no complaints. The year before we got a fairly lucky draw and made the most of it, so perspective is important. W&L was going to struggle just like JHU did against Messiah. As I said, they are knocking on the door, but they are just that tier below the true national champ competitive teams. No shame in that. Breaking through to that top tier is ridiculously hard, staying there even more so. I'm just pleased they have reached the level I think they should be competing at. W&L has the resources and ability to be in that second tier in most sports. They reach that potential in many of them and I'm happy to see men's soccer join the crowd.
