Title: 2019 South Atlantic Region
Post by: lastguyoffthebench on October 18, 2019, 10:57:17 AM

The South Atlantic region appears to be deeper than previous seasons.   Several teams are going to be left-out on selection day:

ODAC:  W&L, Noke (Lynchburg).   Three bid league if Lynchburg steals the AQ

Capital:  CNU, UMW, (St. Mary's).  Two bid league.  Can't see St. Mary's earning the AQ

SAA:  Ogelthorpe (Centre).  Possibility of two bid league.

NJAC:  good luck.   History says two bids, but tough to read.  League is wide open...

UAA:  Emory.  With losses to Ogelthorpe/W&L, along with the UAA grind... highly unlikely they are tourney bound.

USAS:  NCWU / Covenant / Maryville    One bid league.

I doubt Lynchburg can win the ODAC AQ. They are off their game from years past a bit. Bunch of tough losses/ties, but the 4-0 W&L laid on them was a very fair result. The earlier 0-0 tie at Lynchburg was the Hornets holding on for dear life, outshot 22-11 and 10-3 on corners. W&L just couldn't put one away and the Lynchburg goalie came up with 11 saves.

W&L hosting Roanoke Wednesday should decide who hosts the ODAC tournament, though the ridiculous unbalanced schedule leaves H-SC in the running as well since they have nothing but middle to bottom of the league left on their conference run.

Va Wes had 1 shot on goal. It might have been the only shot they had all game. W&L just couldn't find the net. One of those games. I think the Marlins had all 11 guys in their third of the field for 89 minutes...

W&L picked a bad time to hit a scoring slump. They outshot Roanoke last night 24(7) to 11 (3) and tied 1-1. The previous game against Va Wes they lost 1-0 on 12(6) vs 2(1). Going to need to find that touch again soon. Might have already lost the ability to host the ODAC tournament with these 2 games.

Very irritating W&L and Roanoke will meet, should both progress, before the finals, but both dropped points in conference they shouldn't have. The unbalanced schedule means that H-SC had an easier path to hosting and the 1 seed, and since they have played neither W&L nor Roanoke, they could win the conference regular season and tournament without facing one or both this season. It's... not a good system.

Ok - that's just nuts.  And Hampden-Sydney hasn't beaten Roanoke since 2013, W&L not since 2010.

It's what happens when conferences get too big in certain sports and they try and get cute and predict who will be good and need quality wins and who won't. H-SC is a solid team. They didn't do great in their non-conf schedule, but they weren't blown out by good teams either. They ran through the bottom of the ODAC. To be fair, W&L lost to Va Wes and Roanoke lost to Bridgewater. H-SC did beat both teams. Though it is interesting that both W&L and Roanoke lost those games as the precursor to their own conference match up in Lexington. In other words, both teams fell in trap games.

I forgot what a great job Lynchburg does with their game coverage!  Such a pleasure to watch the Hornets defeat Randolph-Macon 2-0 in the ODAC QF this evening.  They're now "lucky" to get #1 seed HMC rather than either W&L and Roanoke who play in the other semi-final.

Yes. Ridiculous. Though Lynchburg and H-SC did play to a draw earlier in the season. In fact, both quarterfinal games are repeats of earlier draws. And if Lynchburg and W&L win, that will repeat an earlier draw. Roanoke and Lynchburg also drew in conference, though Roanoke won an early season OOC match 4-1. If H-SC wins, it will be the first time they will face whoever wins the other quarterfinal.

Ouch. That puts Roanoke into more of a bind. Might need to win the ODAC AQ, or at the very least defeat W&L in the semi. Tough to get knocked down from 4 to 7 this late in the season. Wouldn't want to lose if I was the Generals either. Yes they are sitting at 1 and hold h2h over 3, but a 3rd loss could really shift them down. That loss to Va Wes might be brutal for the Generals.

Somewhat surprised CNU isn't 1. They tied W&L, granted it was at CNU, but they hold the SOS and an extra RvR result. If you are going to have them in front of Mary Washington despite the h2h, not sure why they are behind W&L with a draw.

You're right, the whole unbalanced conference scheduling might be backfiring on them.

Yep. I understand the unbalanced thing but I hate it. If the conference is too big, do divisions and be done with it. But make the schedule relatively balanced.

W&L and Lynchburg win. Lynchburg in penalties. Should be a good title game. Lynchburg needs the AQ, W&L should be a lock at this point, I suspect Roanoke needs W&L to win and they are pretty shaky on the bubble regardless.

Generals hold serve. Hopefully they have earned some hosting privileges. We will see but with the exception of the Va Wes loss, this has been a fantastic season for the Generals.

The ODAC got 2 teams in the field. One Pool C, one AQ. It's not like they were given a lot of respect, though Roanoke getting in was a mild surprise. W&L hosted a pod and progressed. Roanoke went on the road and were eliminated in PKs by a team that just progressed out of the bracket. Hard to say overrated. Seems about right to me.

Montclair, Rowan and Centre also advanced correct? But a rough opening weekend for this region outside of the NJAC...
