Title: D1 Men Soccer
Post by: Michel Bernstini on December 01, 2019, 10:29:59 PM
On Saturday, December 6th, the D1 Men will play their Quarterfinal games.  These, in order, are the best games:

Clemson #2 vs #3 Stanford
Virginia #1 vs #5 SMU
Georgetown #4 vs #8 Washington
UC Santa Barbara #6 vs #14 Wake Forest

10 ACC teams got into the field and 3 are left. Clemson is by far the most entertaining team to watch when they are playing their best but have struggled this tournament winning a couple games in OT. Georgetown is the next best with Virginia and Wake right behind..SMU and UCSB are the dogs that are left but are historically fantastic programs.

The D1 tournament has got to be one of the chalkiest tournaments in history.  Thirteen of the 16 seeds, including all of the Top 11 seeds, advanced to the Sweet 16, and seven of the top eight seeds advanced to the Elite Eight.  The biggest upset to date has been unseeded UCSB over #5 seed Indiana in the Sweet 16--not expected, but not exactly a stunner.

Not that the D3 tournament has been a fountain of upsets, either.

Tough call for today's final Georgetown v Virginia. Virginia has a linebacker up top that can put a team on his back and go out and win everything. Virginia has a depth problem and a couple key injuries. Georgetown has none of those problems but also does not have a striker like Daryl Dike. Man v child...Still Georgetown is so hungry for a title will it be enough to see them thru? Massive massive game here for Georgetown with program changing implications. They have been knocking at the door for 5-10 years now but this is their best chance. Virginia only goes 14-15 deep but I cannot ignore Dike. This is his weekend. UVA 2-1

The most striking thing to me about Georgetown's 3-3 (7-6 PK) claiming of the D1 title over Virginia is the use of players off the bench. In the first half alone, 18 players took the field for the Hoyas.  The "Hoos" made no substitutions in the first half.  All told, Georgetown used 19 players, with subs accounting for 228 minutes.  Virginia used 14 players, with the 3 subs accounting for a mere 51 minutes.  Sounds a little like a game played in Greensboro not too long ago  ;)

I saw that as well and had a similar thought. Great game — both teams showed a lot of character — although I was pulling for Georgetown at the end. And I was somewhat surprised at how much the ball stayed on the ground given limited viewings of ACC/other D1 games.

I had no idea on which thread to post this, but former Trinity (TX) player Laurence Wyke recently signed with USL Championship's Atlanta United 2:

It's interesting that he scored 11 goals in two seasons at Trinity and 16 goals in two seasons at Furman.
