Title: SUNYAC 2022
Post by: stlawus on September 07, 2022, 08:54:07 PM
SUNYAC doesn't seem to get much attention on here these days, so I figure I'll stoke some discussion.   A team to look out for is Plattsburgh.  They're now 3-0 and still have yet to concede.  Are the Cardinals back?

With Cortland rebounding very strong after losing to UR, Oneonta being Oneonta, Buff St having a very competitive team and now Geneseo at 2-1, the SUNYAC looks like an absolute gauntlet this year.   Even Potsdam has started off 2-0 and New Paltz has 2 wins as well.

The Cardinals ran the SUNYAC during my time and it was not even close.
Coach Waterbury is a legend, I think he won over 400 games.
Plattsburg being back would not surprise anyone.

Former D1 team Oneonta has had quite a 15 year run as well and maybe should have a championship or 2 to show for it.

Cortland has been very strong  for about a decade also.

The SUNYAC plays a very physical style and the best of them battle LL teams to get ready for league play.
LL teams do the same.

I agree on the physical play in SUNYAC...and Cortland & Oneonta to battle for the top spot. Cortland really moves the ball well with one and two touch play against high quality opponents.

I need to see Plattsburgh against more quality opponents before I put them in top 3 however they are off to a promising start before stumbling against Renselear

Looks like New Paltz (big upset win versus NYU) will battle for the third spot with Platts; both Platts & NP had trouble scoring last season

Geneseo has an experienced senior heavy squad. Buffalo lost a few key players (Pencic) and will likely find the season a bit tougher. Oswego has a decent squad as well.

Some interesting matchups this week SUNYAC vs. LL
NP vs Vassar then Skidmore
Oneonta vs. Renselear
Ithaca vs Brockport

Plattsburgh absolutely steals one today in Cortland.  Erased a 2 goal deficit and secured the game tying goal with 17 seconds left.   The Cardinals are legit in my view.

Potsdam playing well against #13 Cortland.

I have to tip my hat to the boys at Clarkson and Potsdam.
This might be the strongest Route 11 has been in its entire History.
Even back in early/mid-90s when Clarkson and SU were playing good football, Potsdam was not at the same level.

Now Potsdam is 4-1-1 looking strong in SUNYAC
Clarkson has played 6 games and has been scored upon 0 times.
St. Lawrence working hard to defend the LL crown.

Route 11 standing up in 2022.

Was thinking the same thing.  Overall Cortland probably had the better play in the first half but Potsdam had the best chance.  They seem to be using home field advantage to the maximum, as the ball moves noticeably different on their turf.

On another note, New Paltz gets back into the swing of things with a road win against Plattsburgh.   I still think the Cardinals are a good team given their result against Cortland, but New Paltz is also showing they are going to hang with the best of them.

Transfer #9 at Potsdam who scored the tieing goal last night played academy ball with my son for many years and DI for two different schools before transferring. He's a very talented player and a real nice kid.  I have no doubt he will be a difference make all year long.

Potsdam is the surprise team for sure. Solid Draw versus a tough Plattsburgh squad. Potsdam look much better with the ball this year versus last year.

Brockport 3-0-0 is off to a very good start in SUNY AC play but yet to play Oneonta, Cortland, Platts.(10\1) or New Paltz.
However trouble looms with yellow card accumulations already one player picked up his 5th and two more with four already.

Oneonta beats NP after a slow start to the match. Oneonta much better in the attacking third with good off the ball movement to beat. NP Offense just not as dynamic as Oneonta. Second goal for Oneonta was an absolute rocket upper 90.

Plattsburgh having trouble scoring in conference play but in the top 4 mix.

Brockport keeps winning and now sit at the top at 4-0.  Lots of big tests remaining but taking down Plattsburgh will add to their confidence.

Geneseo with the big upset at Oneonta to give the Red Dragons their first loss.  I was impressed with the Knights in the season opener against SLU, so I'm not completely shocked they managed 3 points today.

Cortland has now scored 10 goals in their last 2 games, looks like they're back.

Nice win for Brockport over Platts., down 0-1 and score 2 to win. Brockport hosting Fredonia mid week so 5-0 looks likely  and puts them in a good spot for playoffs and face a real test versus Oneonta on Saturday.

Platts in a tough spot with two losses and two ties, they cannot score in conference play (other than Cortland match)

Up & Down New Paltz gives up a goal with under a minute to go to settle for a tie with Buffalo. NP like Platts cannot score in conference matches.

Cortland & Oneonta still the most talented teams but Brockport can put themselves in the mix with a win or tie against Oneonta. Geneseo, NP and Platts best of the rest. Geneseo hosts NP Saturday.

Great win by Brockport versus Oneonta who are now top of the table and only need two more wins to clinch 1st seed. Only two goals conceded in Conference play to date.

Brockport and Cortland now the top of the conference. Brockport keeps on plowing thru the competition with a match still looming versus Cortland last week of season...the only question is can Brockport remain perfect 9-0-0 with three left to play??

Oneonta in a bit of a rough patch two losses sandwiched around a draw.

Nice comeback win for Plattsburgh against Oswego. Watched most of the second half and Plattsburgh regrouped well against the wind in the second half to pull it out.

NP squeaks by Geneseo, not much action in this game low SOG totals.
Looks like Geneseo and Oswego for the last playoff spot, Geneseo has a game in hand.

Good point about the conference wins but what wins did Brockport have out of conference play.  Oneonta has a poorer conference record.  How did they do out of conference?

That is what is so strange about Brockport this season.  Aside from the in conference win against Oneonta they have no remarkable out of conference result.  They started the season with 3 consecutive draws against average/mediocre competition.  They even lost to Ithaca who are having one of their worst seasons in recent history.

Superb turnaround for Brockport.  Started season with three draws against less than stellar competition, and after seven games stood at 2-1-4.  Now 8-1-4 after ripping off six SUNYAC matches in a row, including most recently Oneonta.
Title: Re: SUNYAC 2022

Agreed Brockport has had a fairly easy schedule out of conference and in conference until last two weeks, they played Plattsburgh and Oneonta both wins. They still have to play Geneseo (tmrw) winnable then New Paltz (Jekyll & Hyde - depends which NP team shows up) then end with Cortland which may be anti-climatic. Brockport has only conceded two goals in conference play in six games so they are tight defensively.

Cortland has to play four matches, NP, Geneseo, Oneonta and Brockport...so the top 2, conference playoff byes, still TBD... but Brockport controls its own destiny for the 1 seed.

Cortland has played the toughest out of conference schedule followed by NP. Typically Oneonta would have a tougher out of conference then NP

Brockport with a draw against Geneseo; I only was able to watch part of the match, but Geneseo was taking to Brockport.
Brockport scored a PEN and had a player red carded with 11 to go... The Draw sets up a real possibility of their last match versus Cortland for the #1 seed.

Cortland with a 2-1 win over NP. NP led at half 1-0 and outplayed Cortland in the first half. Cortland dominated the entire second half. Cortland looks back on track last few matches.  Oneonta with a bounce back win away at Plattsburgh keeps them in the top 4 mix (Brock., Cort., Onenonta, NP)

Some good matches this weekend:
Brockport at New Paltz - Big impact to how top 4 seeds will end up
Oswego at Oneonta - Can Oneonta get back to back wins, Oswego needs points to stay in playoff hunt
Geneseo at Cortland - Geneseo -2 pts. from last playoff spot, currently behind Platts. & Oswego (both played one more game than Geneseo)

Great response from Cortland after losing to Oneonta to dominate Brockport on the road and secure the regular season title.   SUNYAC playoffs should be some high quality soccer.

Busy last few weeks at work but watched a bunch of SUNYAC Playoffs and theur NCAA matches and caught most of the LL matches....

For SUNYAC Playoffs Very Disappointing result for New Platz vs Plattsburgh a team NP  handed easily on Conference Play. NP going down 0-3 and no adjustment by the NP coaching staff with Platts pressing sending 5/6 into a high press and Coach telling team to play of back under pressure the whole half. NP responded in 2nd half but too much damage done.

Cortland shocked by Brockport letting then hang around in match...Cortland making up for this loss in NCAA playoffs.
Oneonta a well deserved Conference Championship, Coash made a line up / formation adjustment last couple of weeks of Conference play and it paid off with a Championship and advancing in the NCAA to next round.

Cortland bounces back with a win versus SLU playing with 10 men, after a handball in the bid, converted the PEN.

Brockport with a last minute win today versus Elmira and Plattsburgh wins again versus Utica
NP second win of the weekend transfer Striker with a hat trick today versus St. Elizabeth.

Hartwick at Oneonta tomorrow & Oswego

SUNYAC conference okay starts this week with the top match being NP @ Oneonta.

Oneonta out of conference play has been off the charts to date.
Cortland back on track after an early loss and hammered Alvernia in the second half this weekend after being held to a draw at halftime

NP, Plattsburgh and Geneseo next top teams a win or draw by NP versus Oneonta will
Put NP in play with the Top 2.  Buffalo State transfer Striker scoring lots of goals against inferior competition but still
Impressive

Oneonta over New Paltz 1-0 however NP showed they could hang with Oneonta.
Oneonta scores a gift goal, NP GK received a pass back and took a heavy touch right to an
Oneonta forward who was able to touch it around GK and deposited into open net.
NP slight edge in play but gave the ball away numerous times but still had a slight edge.
In the first half NP had two clear shots within the box and hit it right at Oneonta Gk both times. Oneonta benched 3 players who started game after 30-35 min into the game, never returned to game.

Plattsburgh with a strong second half dominates Potsdam. Plattsburgh having a strong start.
Potsdam 1 SOG and 1 Corner entire game. Plattsburgh team to keep an eye on.

Oswego off to a disappointing start losing to Nazareth 0-2

Cortland rolls on 4-0 over Ithaca

Oneonta with a late goal to beat Geneseo 2-1 to stay unbeaten. End of game red cards one for each team. Hard to see on video but appears the Geneseo player came in studs up tackle on Oneonta player who retaliated. Both play out of conference games matches Wednesday.

Cortland rolls over Fredonia 7-0 match was over 25 min into match. Cortland getting on a roll.

Plattsburgh drew Brockport 0-0. A slight surprise as Plattsburgh had been playing well.
Brockport appears to have a strong squad again as one of their best players injured last season is back and looks good.

After losing a tough one to Oneonta, New Paltz beats Buffalo 2-0 and gets back on track
NP got out of the gate slow first 25 min. or so, but converted a PK later in first half, foul was obvious. Second goal headed in off a direct free kick. Buffalo played a lot of direct diagonal balls to their forwards once their backs got within 10-15 yards of midfield. Buffalo forwards were skilled, their midfield was okay and had a really good centerback, (i believe he was #5). Buffalo will upset a team or two.

Looking like another season where the path to win the SUNYACs will run through Oneonta & Cortland. Oneonta have only conceded 2 goals so far while Cortland has 29 goals scored on the season. Very excited to watch that game next Wednesday (10/4 - 4pm @ Cortland).

New Paltz have shown that they can keep it clean in the back (only 3 goals conceded so far) - which can keep them in any match. Plattsburgh @ New Paltz tomorrow evening will be an opportunity for both teams to make their case as a contender this season.

Brockport is a team that does have a bit of talent and if history has shown anything, they are capable of catching fire and making a run. The numbers show that this is more of a balanced team (10 goals for vs. 9 goals against). Good chance for them to build momentum tomorrow @ Oswego ahead of their away match @ Oneonta at the weekend.

Geneseo is a team that looks decent on film but their results tell another story. Their schedule leaves more questions than answers at the moment - we will learn more about them in the upcoming weeks. If they get results against UR and/or New Paltz this week, maybe their outlook changes.

Buffalo look good from a numbers standpoint (25 goals for vs. 8 goals against), but the sentiment for this group changes as soon as you take a closer look at their schedule. Would not be surprised to see this group take some points away from teams with some of their attacking players. Much needed game vs. Fredonia tomorrow to get their first points of the season.

Oswego is another team that is keeping games competitive, but I worry that they will struggle to consistently get results without any real threat in the final third (4 goals scored). With only 5 goals conceded so far, maybe this is a team that takes enough points away from opponents to sneak in. For now, need to see more from them.

Potsdam & Fredonia - thinking that the best case scenario for these teams is to get a few results. Potsdam did not look convincing despite a weaker schedule but have managed to concede only 6 goals so far. Fredonia did get a good result in their first game of the season but have looked like their weak schedule has them ill-prepared for the SUNYACs.

That's what I have by the numbers. Anybody else with insight on how they feel the conference will shake out this season?

Cortland with a beat down of Potsdam...Potsdam lost arguably their two best players, transferrred, and looks like they will be taking some lumps

Brockport looking very good agan, big strong squad....best Oswego 3-2. Oswego starting slowly if they need to pick it up excluding Potsdam match they gave up 7 goals in last three matches.

NP and Plattsburgh drew. NP had the slight edge in the first half but Plattsburgh dominatedd possession and controlled the play in the 2nd half. No adjustment by NP to Platts 6 man high press on the np side of the field forced Np to play backwards entire 2nd half creating turnovers. NP bad passes throughout the whole match. Sime bad luck in 1st fir NpP two cross bars and no call OBVIOUS handball in the platts box but Plstts hit a post...

Cortland with a statement 3-0 win over Oneonta. Have felt since the start of this season that this was going to be the team to make a run from Region 3.

Their 4-1 loss to Rochester to open the season was largely influenced by the three PKs they conceded. They have proven to learn from this as they have yet to concede more than one goal in each of the last 11 matches (+34 goal differential in that time).

Coach Axtell has been consistently knocking on the door of the Elite 8 with five Sweet 16 appearances in the last eight seasons. They impose their will on opponents and look to be up to the challenge this season.

Cortland just keeps rolling along. I caught about 10 minutes of each of the halves versus Oneonta and similar to previous few matches where Cortland (Coach Axtell) adjusts and dominates second halves.

Brockport right now appears to be the next best, big physical squad. New Paltz up next for Brockport.

Brockport will get a shot at Cortland in a week, a must watch.

Geneseo brings Cortland back down to earth. Cortland still in 1st but Geneseo shows why they're tough to play at home.  How about Buff State making things a little interesting.

Plattsburgh also quietly unbeaten.  Big mid week test for them against Cortland.

New Paltz and Brockport was a good match. NP had a slight edge in play and chances.
Brockport GK came up with two BIG saves in final few minutes to preserve the Draw.
NP hit a post in first half and a crossbar in second half.  Have to say NP has played both Brockport 0-0 and Oneonta 0-1 (loss in gk miscue) very well and slighlty outplayed both.
Cortland in a week will be for a top 2 slot.

Geneseo is always a tough out as Cortland found out today.

Cortland v. Platts on Wed. Then they host Brockport, then travel to NP, all tough matches.

Platts with three draws cannot afford a loss or another Draw if they want to finish in top 2 to get a bye. Platts has Cort., Buff then Oneonta...

Buff State has a decent chance for a playoff slot, they have three wins.

Well Cortland with a nice win over New Paltz 2-0 on Wed. so they control their own destiny and #1 see in the conference, a bye, with a win Saturday versus an eliminated Oswego

Brockport unbeaten in Conference play control their own destiny for a #2 seed and a bye with a win at Potsdam

Onenota struggling lately coming off a tie to Plattsburg can lock u the #3 seed witha win or draw versus Buffalo. A loss to Buffalo and they drop to the #4 seed.

New Platz struggling to score goals in Conferecne Play can finish 4th with a win and Buffalo loss.

Buffalo the surprise team to the upside

Plattsburgh the surprise team down. Platts. plays Geneseo for the final playoff spot after Platts. advanced to demi Finals last year.

Quarterfinal matchups set

New Paltz travels to Buffalo...Buffalo has been hot the last few weeks. This will be a contrast in styles...Buffalo their third best scoring offense in the conference versus NP tied for least goals allowed. Buffalo plays more direct feeding their athletic forwards. NP will try to build out of the back. NP won the conference opener 2-0 at Buffalo. Edge to Buffalo playing at home. They have gone unbeaten in their last 5 conference matches (4 wins & 1 draw) If NP falls behind early they will be in trouble as they struggle to score goals.

Geneseo travels to Oneonta. Oneonta last two matches ended in Draws versus Platts. & Buffalo this past weekend. Geneseo beat Plattsburgh this past weekend which was a play in match the winne of the match clinching the #6 seed. Geneseo has played the top teams in the conference tough all season giving Cortland their only loss in conference play. Geneseo will be a tough out but after a big win versus Platts. beating Oneonta on the road is a tall order.

Cortland #1 seed & Brockport #2 seed earned byes.

SUNYAC well represented in the Region III ranking...deservedly so.

Unfortunately history has only two teams being accepted from SUNY AC (AQ  + one Pool C team) into NCAA tourney when its likely it should be more like four teams total this year. Maybe SUNY AC gets third this year with Liberty League only getting their AQ in...based on SUNYAC teams wins over their LL matches.

Buffalo beats NP on off a flick on a Throw in...hard to see on video but appears as if thrown in landed in box near the six, and Buffalo player back heeled or flicked it in. NP had several chances to score in the first half out playing Buffalo but could not convert. Similar to to playoff matches in the last few years NP was out coached. Buffalo went to a higher press with two forwards in second to cut off the easy swing pass and to clog the middle of the field.  NP had trouble in the second half getting out of their own end and was left to go backwards to swing around and down the line. No adjustment by NP Coach until Buffalo scored but the damage was already done. Another curious move was subbing out three starters at once in second half of a 0-0 match. Buffalo travel to Cortland.

Oneonta with a PEN to tart the scoring beats Geneseo 2-1 and travel to Brockport Just caught a few minutes of this match in second half and Oneonta had it mostly under control.

#1 Cortland 5-0 #5 Buffalo State
#2 Brockport 0-1 #3 Oneonta

Cortland once again showing that they mean business. 4-0 going into halftime and were able to rotate to keep their guys fresh. Jack Coleman, who had been absent from the lineup since 10/7 vs. Geneseo (looks like it could have been due to a challenge late in the game), scored the game's second goal and will look to build his confidence after totaling 5 goals & 1 assist in the 2022 NCAA tournament. Never a doubt in this one.

Oneonta vs. Brockport was the game to watch. Both teams know that you don't want to leave your tournament fate in the hands of the selection committee - especially knowing Rochester has a massive opportunity to beat UAA champions Emory over the weekend. Oneonta got the game started with an early dangerous free kick by Ali Somow that hit the near post. Brockport had their first big chance of the half from a counter-press as Chuck Domm found his brother Russ just inside the box, but he was unable to make Oneonta GK Nate Hanna work too hard on the initial chance and rolled the subsequent chance wide. On a free-kick with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first, Brockport had an open header at the back post that was once again denied by Hanna.

Early in the second half, 2022 SUNYAC ROY Milton Mancias Magana took advantage of slow/sloppy play from Brockport in the back as he ignited the counter, driving centrally and finding Somow who earned a corner. After a delay due to an injury, Oneonta were able to make Brockport pay as they had a free header hit the crossbar from the initial cross and were able to bury the rebound. Frustrating from Brockport's perspective to be switched off during such a critical moment, but unfortunately that was the story of the day as they made several unforced errors throughout the game.

Oneonta had another chance late to put the game away, but were denied by Brockport GK Drew Taylor. Worth noting that the two goalkeepers are both graduates from Baldwinsville HS - and both had MOTM performances for their respective teams.

Tomorrow's Cortland vs. Oneonta match is the class of the SUNYACs, as the two programs have combined to win 9 out of the last 11 conference championships (Oneonta - 7, Cortland - 2). Despite Oneonta's history, I'm taking Cortland with a decisive win. Coach Steve Axtell has his sights set on a deep NCAA Tournament run and I have little doubt that their focus will be on anything else with each opportunity that they have the remainder of the season. They have 4-5 guys who are a constant threat in the final third and they go into matches with the mindset of imposing their will on every opponent. A win should give them enough to justify hosting at least the opening weekend.

Cortland likely secures first weekend hosting duties with a shutout of Oneonta.  Could be poised for a deep run but might be up against a NESCAC the 2nd weekend if they advance.  Some extracurriculars after the whistle as an Oneonta player completely blew off and ignored Axtell offering a gesture of respect, followed by him and Byrne having some words as a result.  I get that you're upset after losing but Axtell is a consummate professional and good sport, he wasn't patronizing.

Thoughts on the SUNYAC teams and their draws? I have to say I think Cortland is poised for a deep run with the weapons they possess, especially in the attacking third. Oneonta as well can definitely make some noise in their bracket albeit it's a tough one.

I saw the end of the game dramatics as well. Oneonta player, is very good, but a bit of a hot head.
A few weeks before he retaliated after he was slide tacked (red card) and went after the player and git his own red.

Cortland is deep as usual but their Defense is not what it has been last few years. I think they will make a run as well
Oneonta has been struggling to score last few weeks but they are well rounded and their GK j]has been playing well all year

Wondering if this is what a typical SUNYAC game looks like?
