We are 17 days from the joy of D3 soccer. What early game(s) are you excited for?
9/1 NYU v Montclair
9/1 Chicago v St Olaf
9/2 OWU v Calvin
9/2 Lynchburg v CNU
9/2 Messiah v Catholic
Are just some of the great early games. Add yours!
Also found a place that has the schedule. Did not check for accuracy: https://masseyratings.com/csoc/ncaa-d3/games?dt=20230902
9/1 Vassar @ West Conn
9/1 Cortland @ Rochester
9/3 Cortland @ SLU
I'm not sure what constitutes early, but I like the NPU / Chicago game on 9/12.
There's really only one for me, 09-September, Amherst is at Midd and I will be there. Can't wait!
From the first weekend, not already mentioned
9/1 Pacific Lutheran @ Colorado College (the other big game in Region X along with St. Thomas v. Willamette below)
9/2 Stevens @ F&M (the NCAA 3rd round match that never happened b/c of Cortland's win over F&M in PKs)
9/3 Chicago @ Gustavus Adolphus (NCAA QF rematch)
9/3 John Carroll @ Kenyon (tough opening weekend for Travis Wall with Kenyon @ Ohio Northern on Friday 9/1)
9/3 Johns Hopkins @ Mary Washington (rematch of last year's early season game, won by Hopkins 1-0)
9/3 St. Thomas v. Willamette @Southwestern (chance to establish superiority from the get-go in Region X among two of the best teams last year)
One other early-season, mid-week, game that I think is intriguing:
9/5 Connecticut College @ University of Hartford.
The is Hartford's first game in DIII after playing DI last year. I don't know how many on the team's roster have remained at the school, but I imagine there will be some who were promised more playing time, who were juniors and just want to finish up their last year at the school, or who were freshman and knew coming in that the team would transition to DIII. The team was winless last year, no doubt in part because of departures after the DIII announcement, so it may be that the strongest players from the previous year who had the ability to transfer already did so and the bulk of the team returns. Despite finishing 0-14, Massey ranks Hartford #58 coming into the season. So, this game is less interesting for the matchup (although it theoretically might provide a peek at a top DIII against a bottom DI) and more for what Hartford will look like this season.

9/3 John Carroll @ Kenyon (tough opening weekend for Travis Wall with Kenyon @ Ohio Northern on Friday 9/1)
And after the ONU/JCU top-of-the-OAC opening weekend gauntlet, one would be hard-pressed to match the 9/10 drama in Gambier with the Owls and Wall hosting St Olaf, the program that Wall just departed after elevating St Olaf to rarified air. He will still know the St Olaf players better than the Kenyon lads. Two days earlier, Kenyon hosts Hanover and OWU hosts the Oles.
SKUD, thanks for doing this and especially for potentially locating a place to see a master schedule.

Illinois Wesleyan is picked to finish seventh in the nine-team CCIW's preseason coaches poll. Of course, a preseason poll and $1.89 will buy you a medium coffee at Dunkin' Donuts. Just thought I'd mention it, anyway.

Thanks, yeah, I would not have the game as a must-see, but I am good with the good, early upset alert tag.
The Bears lost four starters in addition to their all-American goal keeper so who knows?
They did pick up a graduate transfer midfielder from Division I powerhouse Saint Louis University which is intriguing (the guy did play minutes here and there).

Bears @ Titans might be more of an upset consideration if it was played later in the season, when IWU's natural grass Neis Field typically turns into an ankle-bending cow pasture. It's the last remaining grass pitch in the CCIW, and Illinois Wesleyan is notorious for not keeping it up very well during the season. One of the first things I do every year when the North Park schedule comes out is to see if the Vikings are playing at Neis that year, and, if so, how late in the season is the visit. This year NPU will travel down to Blo-No on October 14, deep enough into the season for me to say a prayer that the Vikings all return home with their lower extremities intact.
That is hilarious, but also sad. I did not realize they did not play soccer in the historic football stadium.
Also, Illinois Wesleyan has been worse than I thought, having dropped off a bit, post-pandemic. I stand corrected.
Their football team shares Tucci Stadium with their two lacrosse teams, but the two soccer teams have their own stadium, Neis Field.
Love the top matchups compilation — thanks FCGrizzliesGrad!

Great recap can you do this weekly for us?! 4 more days!
4 more days!!! Cannot wait.
9/1 W & L at Oglethorpe
9/2 Stevens at F & M
9/8 Rutgers Camden at Gettysburg
These should be good games to check out for the first weeks
Tufts at Conn College on 9/9 is a huge early season match... probably a little more important for Conn to get a result but Tufts will also be looking to reassert dominance.

If Gettysburg is like last year, they should win.
FYI and not to excuse Stevens, but, for some reason, it is playing at home on the 1st against Manhattanville and then traveling to Lancaster for the their second game in less than 24 hours. Not sure what they were thinking especially with hot weather.
Franciscan @ Randolph-Macon Friday 9/1 at 11 am eastern (8 am pacific)
Why? Because, as far as I can tell, it's the opening match of the DIII men's soccer season! ;D
For one whole hour, it will be the only official DIII Men's soccer match playing in the entire country. Then, during the second half, it will have to compete with games starting at 12 pm at Emory, Husson, and UMass Boston.
That's hysterical! I'll watch it on the plane on my way to another game!
Last November, crosstown rivals WPI and Worcester State started what they intend to establish as an annual tradition of playing a midnight basketball game at the outset of the first day of men's basketball season. It'd be interesting if somebody started a similar tradition in men's soccer.

WPI is playing at Worcester St. on opening day, Friday 9/1, but it's at 7 pm eastern. No idea if Franciscan and Randolph Macon intended to be first (I don't think they've been advertising it on social media), but starting a game at 11 am on a Friday is not necessarily a typical game time.
I can't remember if it was this thread that a couple of folks were talking about playing D1s.
SUNY Maritime hosts D1 VMI Saturday night (listed on SUM site as exhibition game). VMI is already 0-2, dropping a pair of matches 5-0 to Robert Morris and 3-0 to Navy.
One of my weekend sleepers is Willamette at Southwestern Friday night at 9:00 EST....the Bearcats could be caught still hiberbating in a trap game looking ahead to St Thomas. PN INSTA-PREDICTION...Southwestern gets the W.
Southwestern is also a sleeper pick overall in Region X.

Southwestern has been a strong team for awhile and, while they didn't score many goals last season, they didn't give up a ton of goals either (other than against Trinity and St. Thomas). It certainly wouldn't surprise me if they handled Willamette, just liked they held Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to a 0-0 tie last year around this time. Willamette does have experience on these Texas swings (which pose the dual challenges of travel and heat), having beaten Southwestern 2-1 in 2021. That game was in San Antonio @ Trinity, though, while this one is at Southwestern's home field in Georgetown, TX. The challenge for Southwestern might be that their GK from last year, Jack Viles, who was two time first team All Region and an All American in 2021, has graduated and their most experienced returner, although a senior, has played two games in his career and only 16 minutes last year. I wouldn't be surprised if they start a freshman. He's 6'4" and was three time All State in Arkansas, but he's still a freshman.
This thread gave me an idea....
Game ... or Games ... of the Week (https://youtu.be/uB56WPRWIVU?si=pUfIpUD0m7D8_UrP)

With D3soccer.com gone, what is best spot for the cumulative schedule? Anything better than NCAA.com?

NCAA.com is better for the end of the day when you want to check results. It does have the capability to track live scores, but for a some reason it often doesn't happen (it's not working now). Massey doesn't appear to have live scores either.
Gustavus Adolphus is up 1-0 early in the second half against Knox. Adolphus is outshooting Knox 13-1, but after scoring in the 7th minute, has been stymied.
Macalester is up 1-0 over Carthage toward the end of the first half. The stream is way ahead of the Live Stats.
Emory and Covenant are tied 0-0 at half.
Franciscan beat Randolph Macon, 0-0
NC Wesleyan and Hopkins are tied at half.

Wisconsin Eau-Claire is up 2-0 against St. Scholastica at halftime. UPDATE: It's now 6-1 UWEC in the second half. That escalated quickly. UPDATE: St. Scholastica is playing down a man because of a red card in the 62d minute and UWEC scores on the ensuing free kick. It is now 7-1. Someone throw a towel in the ring.
And for those looking for a Bard revival, they are up 2-0 against SUNY Purchase at half.

Well, unfortunately, I will NOT be watching neither. I wont pay, but if they are playing non-conference, and are playing away, I will tune in if there is a game worth watching. This weekend I believe Catholic is playing away at Cortland. I wouldn't mind seeing that one. But no, I won't pay.
Honestly, not saying I am the end all be all about D3 Soccer, but I know the # of views I get for videos, and I can't believe they can make that much $ on subscriptions. Maybe for the major sports? I really don't know the business model for small schools though. But I would think there is an opportunity cost to being behind a paywall. Awareness, advertising etc..
Personally, I think it's a bad, but not saying its a bad decision for the schools. I hope they are making tons of money and it's used for their athletic programs. But I am not so sure.
SC.
For all those looking to get on the "feel good" soccer team bandwagon, Cal Tech hosts a game today against NAIA side Hope Pacific at 4 pm Pacific/7 pm eastern. Cal Tech is currently 2-0 for what I'm going to call their best start ever (although I can only verify that back to 2006). According to Cal Tech's Sports Information department, last season's 4 wins was the second highest win total for the program in 30 years. With 2 wins currently and Hope Pacific coming into the game with a 1-4-1 record, Cal Tech has a solid chance of starting the season 3-0. Pretty good for a team that didn't win a single game between 2012 and 2016. And you can watch the stream with NO paywall (who would pay? they average something like 25 fans a game, which must include the kids who came to the field to study because it was quieter than the library). Plus, there's a decent chance there won't be any technical issues. After all, it is Cal Tech.

I live in a Landmark town and was highly disappointed when I went to watch a match and hit a paywall. I haven't heard directly, but secondary sources say that schools are getting $$ from FLO which makes it worthwhile. I don't have any interest in paying. I'll watch some away matches and attend the live matches that I can. I am hoping this is not the way forward for all conferences.

I find it very disappointing for recruits and their parents that want to watch games of the schools they might be interested in playing. Sorry you are a recruit but not only will you have to pay to go school you also have to pay to watching your future team. They can not be making that much money off of FLO....
The OAC mandated paid attendance starting this year. All schools using Hometown ticketing. App download available. As I attend games at several locations I inquired about season passes (available for individual schools - not for a single sport). Oh well . . .
I have not seen this mentioned and this may have been. Not sure which category this should be. However, the Centennial Conf kicks off this weekend (just like many leagues).
Muhlenberg (3-1) last years Cent. Conf. tournament champs play Johns Hopkins (2-1-2) runner up on this Saturday. So big game for each. Any loss in the conf, like other confs., means a lot. Muhls are scoring goals like last year so it should be a very good game in Baltimore.
One possible big ODAC game that may be overlooked is W&L playing Virg. Wesleyan on Wednesday. VA Wes. is 6-0, might be soft, but still. Plus Va Wes. has not been known as a powerhouse. Other thing to consider for W&L is that they most likely are going to travel all the way across the state to play at 6 this Wednesday.
This isn't a "must-see" for any particular conference or for regional/national ranking purposes, but it's a curiosity because a D3 team will be playing a D1 team. In recent years, Averett has played Davidson, Trine has played Indiana University, and Endicott has played Boston College. All decent D3 programs, but not necessarily traditional powers and I don't think any of them have been ranked when their teams played the D1 team.
On Monday, here's your opportunity to see a highly-ranked D3 team play a D1 team. Trinity University (4-0-1), which is currently ranked #15 (although that may drop some after the tie with Hardin-Simmons) is playing D1 Incarnate Word University, also of San Antonio, at 7 pm central.
Unlike any other recent D1 v. D3 game, this game will be played AT the D3 team's home. Trinity's grass field is far superior for soccer to Incarnate Word's stadium field (in my opinion), which is an artificial turf football field that can be used for soccer. Incarnate Word fans could out-number Trinity fans, though, since IW has many more San Antonio natives on its roster than Trinity does and their family and friends may show up in force.
Not sure "early season" is accurate still here, however, exciting matchup today with Carleton against St. Olaf at 4pm CT. Carleton is 9-0 and has not given up a goal since their first game on Sep. 1. Might not have had the hardest schedule, but definitely respectable and includes impressive shutout wins against Gustavus and North Central. St. Olaf on the other hand, looks to continue their success after having a tough start to the season (albeit against a tough set of opponents).
Field seems narrow?
