My picks for the week matches 1 per day.
10/2 none
10/3 Amherst at Conn college
10/4 Oneonta at Cortland
10/5 none
10/6 Whitewater at Eau Claire (cheese curd Darby)
10/7 Widener at Messiah
10/8 Amherst at Bowdoin
Big week for Amherst!
What are yours?
Nice thread! I think the Tufts v Babson contest on 10/3 has post season implications?
Jackie made our picks this time.
Game.. or Games of the Week. The Midweek Edition for 10.2.2023 (https://youtu.be/yELk6bEx5hw?si=v2Mv4-CLNVN8QdYF)
Here are some alternatives:
Monday 10/2
Suffolk @ Boston College
If there's nothing else around, might as well watch one of these D3 v. D1 options. BC is winless in the last 6 (3 losses and 3 ties) and has been shut out in all but one of those games. Suffolk is 7-2-1 and has won 5 straight.
Tuesday 10/3
Tufts @ Babson
I'll go with the inter-regional with regional rankings implications over a conference game between teams that will both make the conference playoffs.
Wednesday 10/4
Occidental @ Chapman
Replay of last year's SCIAC finals won by Chapman on a bicycle kick in the final seconds of double OT.
Thursday 10/5
There are some ASC games if you want to scout Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, or Concordia (each of whom could make the NCAA Tournament as an AQ), but they are each playing weaker conference opponents.
Friday 10/6
Southwestern @ St. Thomas
A chance for St. Thomas to get back into the saddle after losing to Colorado College, but Southwestern is 5-1-3 with the only loss against Trinity.
Saturday 10/7
Muhlenberg @ Franklin & Marshall
The Mules are 7-1-1 and unbeaten in the last 8. F&M seems to be back on track after a three game lull of ties against Haverford and Swarthmore and a loss to Kean.
If you want an alternative further west, try Hope @ Calvin. Although inconsistent this year, Hope did beat Chicago and may have ambitions of beating rival Calvin for the first time since 2010.
Sunday 10/8
Texas Lutheran @ St. Thomas
Texas Lutheran comes in flying high at 11-0 after beating Trinity. This is the battle for supremacy in the SCAC and a chance to watch Jack Manke and Cole Sixkiller, both of whom have received mention in the National Perspectives thread.
If you don't want to watch St. Thomas a second time (or they lose the first game), then watch Willamette @ Pacific Lutheran. Those are the two traditional heavyweights in the NWC and may still be the two title contenders if Whitworth can't stay consistent

I agree that's a good one, but I was just offering alternatives to the fine ones suggested by SKUD in his original post, which already included the Widener-Messiah game.
keep it light and try to only pick one game per day.
10/09 Pratt @ Medgar Evers The Toilet Darby
10/10 U W-Whitewater @ UW-Plateville The Cheese Curd Darby (both yet to lose)
10/11 North Central IL @ North Park The North Darby

10/13 Oglethorpe @ Rhodes The Hatfields and McCoys Darby

10/15 Nescac Triple Superduper Darby Day with some dirty Jersey infused. Mid@Conn, Willi@Tufts (this is the tie Darby) as one coach recently subbed in the 87th min to kill clock. Amherst @ Montclair insert joke here _______

Fair enough as to Hopkins v. F&M as to a national perspective.
I am sure that Hop will back what I say next. For both teams, this game is huge. Locally, it is a rivalry game for both teams historically and plenty of implications for this season/conference. A third loss for JHU could make so that the only way it makes the NCAAs is through winning the Cent. Conf. So a lot of pressure on JHU. For F&M, if it wants to maintain its regional ranking and be on pace to make it to its 10th straight NCAAs. Also, F&M only has a one point lead over JHU and two points behind league leader, Wash. College. F&M has won over JHU the last two years. Two years ago 2-0 and considered an upset of sorts which F&M needed to make it into the Cent. Conf. playoffs. Last year, F&M gave JHU its only loss in regular time with a tough goal. Both times, F&M came into the games with very good game plans. Last year with the 1-0 win, F&M played a very different style to what it had played in previous matches. Plenty of banter on the boards concerning that game. Many might say that, over the last 15 years, Appleby and Wagner are the best two coaches in the Cent. Conf.
Historically, since 2000, they've met 29 times (minus the COVID year of course). Of these, only three times were they decided by more than a goal (twice by 2 and once by 3). 12 times they went to OT - during one period they went to OT 5 straight times. 15 times a team won by a goal. There are other teams that had stretches against F&M, but only JHU and F&M have gone back and forth regularly over the years.
F&M marks this game on its schedule, and, for some Hopkins soccer fans, they may do the same. Will the Dips dip or Hop hop??

Agree and wish Dezo was packing soccer size b@//s to have that type of mentality.
Yeah, I mean... What Sierra said. I've been away so maybe I missed someone trying to hype F&M v Hop as a national game, but that doesn't really even factor into it for me. It's absolutely a big game regionally, which, frankly IS what actually matters at the end of the day. One of these two teams is going to be needing and at large bid, this game is a major factor in that. Period.
Thanks Hop!
No insignificant games left for many.
I thought that comment had to be a joke, but maybe not.
As a neutral I view JHU vs F&M as very much a national game, and very much on par with Calvin vs Chicago, OWU vs Kenyon, Cortland vs Oneonta, GAC vs St Olaf, Christopher Newport vs W&L or Lynchburg, Tufts vs Amherst, Bowdoin vs Middlebury, etc, etc
And yes, the game is as important for getting a ranked win (or not) in the Pool C race as winning the conference regular season.
It was a joke and still is; can't wait to see the kickball team from Amish country vs the inner city bore-fest.

I get it now and that is a pretty accurate assessment from last year's game. F&M may play kickball again against JHU. That was the coach's strategy for that game last year and it worked out. If you watched other games, F&M definitely played differently.
This year, I think he might be a little different year as F&M has shown a lot more goal scoring ability than last year and maybe JHU is not as organized as in previous years. F&M may be more offensively minded and less disrupting (not worried about connecting many passes and take adv of any mistakes while playing very good defense). Last year F&M averaged 1.45 goals per game (13-2-5) and this year 2.62 (10-1-2). That is pretty big jump offensively for F&M.
Who knows, but JHU might get out of its normal game plan and play kickball. Both coaches are pretty good strategists. I would say that both teams' soccer IQs are pretty high.

Hopkins is 100 percent not as organized in the back. They will try to work it out of the back come hell or high water, but this squad doesn't have 5th year senior Treinen (sorry to be repetitive for those paying close attention) who bossed that back line better than any I've seen in a decade.
That said, Hop has started unlocking their offense a bit, which was really what has been their achilles heel the last few years.
With THAT said, I think this year's Dips squad is a cut above and with the came in "Amish country" I predict they win in a one goal game.

If you're looking for a game to watch while waiting for the North Park v. North Central game, Macalester @ Carleton might be a good choice. If you want a game after the NP/NC game is finished, try the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps game at Occidental.

Hahaha, I would go with shoofly pie and birch beer (preferably white version). Shoofly is the best, right up there with rhubarb pie. My mom was good at both though we lived a little bit out of Amish territory (more Moravian area - and not to far from the infamous bookstore). https://www.goldenbarrel.com/recipe/pennsylvania-dutch-shoofly-pie/

Definitely not going to predict as to score. Though round, the ball goes in so many different unpredictable directions. Will predict that it'll be a very good game.

Got it SKUD. Figured as much. The truth behind the kidding is spot on.
F&M has played that way in the past in certain games against specific teams. Just wanted to provide context as to why the kidding was true. The context being is that F&M purposely can play chaos, long and/or swarming ball when needed and the coach calls on it. Against other teams, F&M may look like JHU as it plays out the back. From my perspective, F&M has a style, but is not afraid to get out out of that to adapt to a style that would possibly be more effective against a good team.

Hmmm. Do mean as sort of high pressing (difference in that F&M backs are not in the other teams half - high line) or even gegenpressing in the final third?? Not giving the other team time to breath when F&M losses possession and/or the other team has possession off of a free/goal kick. Not saying that F&M is even close to Liverpool or Dortmund. F&M in many ways is trying to park the bus in the offensive side, while not letting a counter to bite them. Requires left/right back to fast/strong along with the two center backs to be beyond competent along with a keeper who has a high soccer IQ and good with his feet.
F&M, against the better teams, tends to completely bypass the midfield in their build up play. They generate a lot of their offense from pressing and forcing defender mistakes. Long diagonals or balls played over the top into corners from their backs or CDMs. I think that's where the Neanderthal ball comes from. Also, long throws, free kicks launched into the box etc. Contrast that with a team like Messiah who generally keeps the ball on the ground, builds through the midfield and aims to switch the point of attack laterally to create a numbers advantage on the wings or opportunities for their wingers to isolate an outside back and drive at them with the ball 1v1.

So, would that explain why F&M has tied teams like Haverford and Swarthmore this year? If the opponent is weaker and its defenders sit back and get rid of the ball quickly, F&M has to generate offense on its own, which is more difficult? Or were those just early season anomalies?
I've only seen F&M play twice this year and each time they pretty much bypassed the midfield and played long diagonal balls out of the back to Horowitz. Not unlike Montclair who are constantly launching long balls to Lukovic. Clearly both teams have found success with that, but you don't see a lot of combination play through the midfield from either - at least I haven't seen it.

Numbers kind of speak for this situation. Based on these, you pretty much don't need to watch the games.
F&M against Haverford - 31 shots 7 on goal. 1-1 Final Swarthmore - 26 shots 6 on goal. 1-1 Final - Kean 14 shots 11 shots on goal. 1-0 loss. Total over three games 71 shots with 24 shots on goal. Only produced 2 goals for F&M. If you did not see the game or look at the numbers, you would think that all three games were pretty even. F&M just couldn't figure it out till they played Ursinus. All incredibly frustrating games.
Next 5 games all wins, F&M scored 17 goals (three games 3 goals and two 4 which one was against the Muhls). Over last 5 games 95 shots with 45 shots on goal. F&M leads the Cent. Conf. on goals, shots and SOGs.
Also note over the previous two seasons, this season is substantially different. Perhaps a total anomaly. Last year over 20 games they scored 29 times (F&M was 13-2-5) or 1.45 goals per game, over 13 games this year F&M has scored 34 times (10-1-2) or 2.61 goals per game. Please keep in mind that they only have a 5-0 win as opposed to other teams that have 8 or 9 goal wins against teams that they crushed (Ursinsus 8-0 v. Medgars Evers and 9-0 v. PS Berks)

True. Oscar does have several of those types of goals. Check out this video of the three goals against the Muhls (4th was a unfortunate own goal) - https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyLjpqpPYk7/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Please note that the first goal by Oscar was a result of Koa Kaliebe (8 goals this season himself) great, great play with two defenders around him as well as the keeper. Oscar just got to the right place at the right time with a nice finish. Second was a very nice outside shot by a kid who has an incredible foot. The last was F&M camping out in front of the Muhls goal. Oscar again off of a good shot by another player saved by the keeper, then Koa had a chance which the keeper saved and then a back did not clear well. It went into Oscar's foot and then fortunate deflection over the keepers head. Constant pressure
Last video, Koa again and Phil Monos just weaving around many Muhls. Counted two megs with only inches from the end line. Point is that Oscar has the results, but guys like Koa and Phil get Oscar those opportunities. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyL6FNwuGTS/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Early shameless plug for GOW next week on 10/18 when Hopkins visits Washington College in the Battle of the (Old) Bay as I will be making the road trip to Chestertown for the game in person? If only I can find time to hit the Middleton in Annapolis while I'm up there ???

Hahaha. Live it every day. Many of my kids' friends and parents have similar accents. Live between Bmore and Annapolis on the Chesapeake (or did until recently just a little further from the Chesapeake). Strong, strong presence. You can definitely figure out in seconds who grew up here.
Only thing that gets confusing is the slightly variant Delaware/Philly/South Jersey amalgamations.
I'm gonna stand with CSO on this one....Middlebury at Conn Coll is the game of the week. Hard to beat #4 vs #3 according to the esteemed D3boards.com fan poll.
That's on Sunday...not too far behind in what is an unusually overflowing cornucopia of treats on a Sunday are Williams at Tufts, Amherst at MSU, and Texas Lutheran at Colorado Coll.
For Friday, SLU at Vassar is probably the most important, although Southwestern at Colorado Coll and Oglethorpe at Rhodes are key tilts as well.
On Saturday the headliners are the yet to be mentioned Hopkins at F&M match as well as Mary Washington at Christopher Newport. Very close behind are Brockport at Cortland, John Carroll at Ohio Northern, and CWRU at Rochester. That said, the shrewd consumer will not want to miss critical conference games like Wheaton (MA) at Babson, Western Connecticut at nemesis UMass-Boston, and Virginia Wesleyan at Lynchburg.
Sleeper upset pick....Colby at Conn Coll on Saturday.
PN keep sleeping on your sleeper.
Also of interest is the Boston/Cambridge Darby MIT (6-4-1, 4-0)v Emerson (7-4-2, 0-3) Last year Emerson had a miraculous win in the NEWMAC semi over MIT and now must win to have any chance of making the conf tournament. MIT is playing for conf tournament bye and home field.
Iam going to take Emerson in this one!

@SierraFD3soccer Funny thing happened on our drive up to Chestertown today. Son and I got to talking about F&M, and he says he knows one of the players--someone named Koa. Evidently he was in the same club, they trained together in the past, and my son's current club coach was also his. I told him I had seen some of his highlights, and he agreed he was a good player and had his coach's influence. Small world.
Was a great drive up. As a Baltimoron an MD native from the road I pointed out to my son where my grandparents used to live, my cousin was married, and a golf course I once played. Of course he didn't hear anything because his AirPods were glued to his ears.
About to head over to the game soon. Hoping it lives up to expectations. Hon.

Hahaha. Always great going down memory lane with your kids. Had the same with my kids when we've gone back to PA. Just flies over their heads which is fine. I was felt I was just lucky to remember all that stuff.
Yes, Koa Kaliebe. Great player and even better kid. Super, super quick along with a great ball handler. Really breaks some ankles as well as chasing down some unbelievable balls. D1 talent but off the bench if he was in a D1 program. Oscar Horowitz just got the F&M scoring record with 18 goals this year and many were because Koa sucks up players when he has the ball leaving Oscar wide open. Koa is having a great year with 8 assists along with 8 goals. He is a junior from Cary, NC as you probably already know. Do you all know Brian Morgan, Coerver coach in your area? He also knows Koa. Brian was my son's JV HS coach back in the day. Very interesting sense of humor which my son loved. One of those tough love coaches.
If you are going to the JHU v. WC game, that should be great as both teams have a whole lot on the line. Almost definite must win for JHU. A lot of students may show up (always the case when they play F&M) and it can get a little salty and fun. Nice field and very nice campus. Another connection is that my son's HS coach who runs Coerver in the MD VA area (and Brian Morgan's former boss) used to coach with WC's coach Roy Dunshee who is great guy and one of the few coaches who my son and I believe what he says. Our son's HS coach succeeded Roy when WC hired him. Roy was running Coerver at the time with him. Roy is also a really good guy and really doing well with WC. They have turned the corner the last couple of years as they used to have a tough road in Cent. Conf. Should be a beautiful night in Chestertown.
Major confession...when my kid was 7 or 8 and I thought being the best player in our little town meant he was one of the best players in the state (and he wasn't), I bought all of the Coerver tapes. Also bought the video of Pele working out with 1950s era equipment and juggling grapefruits. After watching the latter I went straight to the grocery store and bought some grapefruits and had my son trying to juggle grapefruits in the front yard. Total insanity...and the saddest part of all is that I can't wait to try again with a grandkid.
Hahaha. Some day for me as well maybe. Might be a bit old though by then, but I'll still be able to get to the supermarket hopefully!
Coerver was one of the reasons why my son did not go DA when that began became a thing. Plus he had a really, really strong USYS team, Balt. Celtic (made up of Balt. private school kids coached by McDonough and Mt. St. Joes coaches along with my son and one or two others who were very good players). FYI, Balt. Celtic does exist but not so much now.
So his HS school coach was a professional coach with his Coerver business along with his assist. coach which was very, very different than most HS programs. They always went deep in the MD large HS playoffs. Son as a GK was well ahead of his peers with his feet and soccer IQ because he did Coerver from an early age. Plus free Coerver training for a 3 months or so every a year.
Loras @Luther did not disappoint. Loras takes it 1-0. Second half Loras pressed for the equalizer, but Loras proved to be stingy on the night.

The name doesn't ring a bell, but I'm old and losing my memory. I'll ask my son. There's a good chance he may know of him if he is in the area. And it was a great night and a good game to watch live.

Game ... or Games of the Week - The Midweek Edition for the Week of 10.23.2023 (https://youtu.be/AQSg1HybmOE)
Battle for the Century/Centennial Conference
10/28 F&M v. Washington College. F&M has a point on WC for the Cent Conf regular season title. Battle of one lose teams. Win or tie F&M gets it done. Both teams have separated from 3rd place. Should be a great game!
Who are you picking? Do you have a player in the game?

So connections to both teams. Son just graduated and played at F&M. Roy Dunshee, WC coach, great guy and very good coach, started the upward trend at my son's HS soccer team (his assistant took over and coached my son). Roy also still has ties in our Maryland area. FYI feel the same about Coach Wagner.
Based on the season, I'm going with F&M. They have been able generate offense all season and even down. Hard to pick against them. Also F&M has been getting better defensively so they may have arrived at the end of the season as a complete team.
WC beat F&M twice at WC two years ago and they played really well against the Muhls. So I would say 51% in F&Ms favor.

Battle for the Main Line
This game will potentially mean a lot and could be considered a playoff game before the playoffs.
Haverford v. Swarthmore. Old time bitter rivals, dating way back. Teams are in the 5th and 6th playoff spots and have tied conference records. Whoever wins will be the 5th seed. The loser could possibly be overtaken by Dickinson, if Dickinson, on its slow grass and they play like they did against Messiah, upsets Hopkins on Saturday.
Saturday's game SLU vs Hobart. Winner takes first. Loser may come in 3rd or 4th in the conference.

Don't jinx us Sierra! i'll be there Saturday night. Daughter goes to Dickinson so I have promised to embarrass her by wearing as much Hopkins paraphernalia and cheering as loudly as possible.

Hahaha, that could be a great game! Hop has may have to bring it, because Dickinson needs this game. Have fun with your daughter. Good times!!
If you have time to watch, crazy game! From Kuiper -
UPDATE: St. Thomas 2 - Trinity 1
After Taty Aleman goes out with a knock, Daniel Castro settles a cross in the box and shoots a left footed ball over the GK and under the crossbar to put the Celts ahead.
UPDATE: St. Thomas 2 - Trinity 2
Meese scores a rebound on a free kick to tie it up
One thing that is clear in this game is that both teams have top class strikers and offensive play generally and both teams have undersized GKs who make things a little more difficult for the defense on high balls into the box. A taller GK could have done better on Trinity's goal in this case.
Update: Trinity 3 - St. Thomas 2
Adjei scores on a 1 v. 1 in a counter attack and Trinity retakes the lead.
