With the season kicking off soon, I'm putting the finishing touches on the 3rd Annual Weekly D3 Soccer Pool.
Basic set-up is the same...
- 10 games to select from each weekend
- 5 points for each correct winner selected
- 10 points for each correct score predicted
- Once again, your lowest weekly score for the season will be removed, so the winner is the person with the highest point total over 10 weeks.
- Winner will receive bragging rights
Week 1 pool will open on Tuesday 8/27 and close Friday morning (8/30).

At least Averett scored a consolation goal in the 81st minute, but I think that led Duke's coach to unshackle the players and they scored a final goal to make it 14-1. Got to admire their restraint in not going above a 13 goal margin!
I had Chicago 5-0, but I wanna stress that didn't represent any residue from last year's Natty final 😁.

LOL. There's still hope. Last year, FCGrizzliesGrad finished the first week in next to last place but managed to squeak out a season championship.
I started off last year with back to back weeks of 20 points but I was consistent and never had a week under 20. Plus I was one of only 8 people who picked every single week thus getting to drop their lowest score.

The matchups with F&M v. Rowan and JHU v. Kenyon then they flipflop on Sunday. F&M v. Kenyon and Rowan v. JHU. Any of these 4 teams could end the weekend with amazing records or falling back in the early season.
One thing that you all sort of said was that F&M and JHU are playing at home both games and both have great home results. Could be the tipping points in all 4 games. F&M usually have a good crowd especially on Friday nights compared to most D3 soccer games.
Plus all games are on turf (JHU brand new turf as it looks like) and Kenyon plays home games on grass. Not sure about Rowan, but the turf/grass might be a factor. I don't think as much though.

On the Cal Tech - Swat game, one question mark for Cal Tech is whether Ishaan Mantripragada will be healthy and back in the lineup. Etienne Casanova has been carrying the playmaking and scoring load thus far (although he has gotten help from others) the last two games, but the competition level wasn't too high. They could use another high quality player in the attack.
Another factor is that Cal Tech has been scheduling all of its games at 11 am local time. The whole LA area is in the middle of a heat wave and temperatures could be as high as 101 degrees by midday in Pasadena on Sunday. They may have to hose down Cal Tech's turf field just to keep the boys cleats from melting.

Picking up the Rowan thing... Earlier this week I did a quick scan going back 4 or 5 seasons and confirmed... That's a pretty darn good program. 80 percent on the Dips, though, comes down to them being an NCAA and contenting for the CC title every year for quite some time.
And they are an extremely tough out at home. Mentioned over in the MidA thread, they get a good crowd, especially on a Friday night. (And the weather is gorgeous today.)
Since you both mentioned the locker room motivation potential for Rowan I just sent a screenshot of this to my son who is on the PA Turnpike en route to F&M now. Strictly in the name of science, of course ;)

At least Rowan has advanced past the second round in the past 5 years. And I would argue they're equally as successful, contending for NJAC every year and playing in NCAA often.

Some of the conference preseason coaches polls aren't published by the conferences, so individual schools publish them (or not) as a press release. I got this list from Wilkes, which clearly was not too proud to boast that they were not predicted to come in last (https://gowilkesu.com/news/2024/8/28/mens-soccer-wilkes-mens-soccer-ranked-ninth-in-landmark-preseason-coaches-poll.aspx).
And I think most coaches are too busy worrying about their own squads in August to know much about everyone else before the season except where they finished last season. The preseason poll more or less tracks the 2023 final standings for conference games only, with some small variations in the middle third.

Since I only started watching D3 soccer a little over a year ago my knowledge is limited for now. So as much as I'd like to participate I feel way under qualified. Almost like one of those 17th century cartographers trying to map out the New World. Since I do rely on these forum boards I guess if I lived in the 17th century my map might look something like this:

That D3 football map is over ten years old and does not reflect a number of schools that have moved to D2, D1, or NAIA, have changed conferences, added football, or have shut down. It's good to see basically where conferences are located.

UPDATE: I did subscribe to FloSports since SCIAC has it too and I see that you are on the field with the covered stands! The bigger issue is that the camera work looks like a Veo where they take video from two sides of the field and knit them together. That can create some distortions and in this case one side of the field looks like green grass and the other looks like brown grass. Since it's artificial turf, I know it has to all be the same. It's probably just an optical illusion from one of the camera lenses looking into the setting sun in the early part of the game.

Wish they meet the last game of the year like in 2021-22. Still big. F&M had to win in 2021 just make the 5 team field for the CC playoffs. 22 they had to win to clinch regular season CC title.

Edit:I just watched again and so much to unpack. As Napoleon Dynamite once asked, do the chickens have large talons for that ice? The speed of Favorite's peck is amazing, especially when she took the second one. I picked York, but could have picked Messiah easily as they appear to be playing better. If they beat York then I will definitely pick Messiah. Kind of like show me first.
As to F&M, I can see why there is a split. A lot of emotions involved there, and, despite F&M outperforming JHU this year up to now, the team is not liked/hated? which is fine. Am a little nervous about SC picking F&M though, hahaha.
I went with Messiah. I think York is overrated at this point of the season and I think Messiah is slightly underrated. With that being said, neither team is close to the level of those aughts York and Messiah squads that were two of the top teams in the nation at the time. Messiah is a different beast once conference play rolls around. They don't have the squad strength that they normally do (they're probably missing 2-3 all-region caliber players compared to Messiah teams from the past) but beating them at home in October is still a big ask. York will probably look to capitalize on set-piece/long throw opportunities which has been their m.o. throughout the season. Their new head coach, Nate Gibboney, was previously at Lycoming so he has had some success against Messiah in the past and knows the traditional formula (bunker in and try to hit them on the counter, lump every restart past midfield into the box, and consistently foul to break up their passing rhythm). York is capable of getting a result and I hope they do but I think Messiah wins this one
As to Swat v. Dickinson, Swat definitely started really well till they lost to F&M, WC and JHU in a row and then beat Eastern and Ursinus. Both were the best of the Cent. Conf for the first 4 or 5 games. However, while Dickinson spit the bit against a decent Muhls team 4-2 (2 Muhl goals after they got a red card) and tied WC 0-0, Dickinson is playing at home on not so great grass.
I agree Dickinson hasn't really played anyone yet, but Swat, imo, is not nearly as good as Dickinson. Until Dickinson plays a decent team, I went with Dickinson. F&M plays Dickinson on Wed next week in Lancaster.
