Well I'm sucking up my FloSports anger and taking my boys to Atlanta for the W&L-Emory and W&L-Ogelthorpe games.

So those will be the games I'm watching and possibly the only ones this season until the NCAA tournament.

One game to watch is Trinity University (Texas) v. Clairmont Muddy Scripts, Friday 8/29/2025 at 8:00 p.m. CST.  It's Coach Paul McGinlay v. his long time assistant Ed Cartee. Cartee has done a great job bringing CMS into the national picture and Trinity has always been there. The game will be played at Trinity and the video production will be top shelf. Don't miss it.

Also, Trinity play the University of St. Thomas on Sunday at 6:00 at Trinity. The game is always spicy and will tell us a lot about what type of team USTR has this year.

Sad that in these times field conditions affect gameplay.  Back in my time, a flat field was amazing. Meadows with rocks were sometimes the standard. Many of us played on grass narrow football size fields surrounded by cinder tracks which had these metal ankle breaking borders. Also collected water on the sidelines which froze in Oct/Nov.

Today so, so much better in 80% or more (to include HS) play on turf or very good grass. One of the reasons son turned down a very good team at the time was the condition of their field. Made no sense as a goalkeeper.

The Trinity field was in bad shape (for its standards) last season in the NCAA tournament, especially in the Round 2 game against Bowdoin, because of the hard use over recent weeks and weather conditions late in the season, but it is usually one of the best fields around.  It looked pretty good in this Instagram post (https://www.instagram.com/p/DM9CDLTOZOo/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MWZsbDExNGVyMjUz) of an early August ID camp (see the last three videos of the 11 v. 11 game).

Wentworth 4 Colby-Sawyer 1 Halftime
Salve Regina 0 UMass Boston 0 Halftime

Swarthmore v. Yeshiva just kicked off

UPDATE:  Colby-Sawyer is catching up?  4-3 in the 68th minute
Swarthmore 1 - Yeshiva 0 22nd minute
Salve Regina 0 UMass Boston 0 73rd minute

UPDATE:  Who said defense is ahead of offense at the beginning of the season?

Barn-burner of a game between Colby-Sawyer and Wentworth.  Wentworth up 4-1 at Half, Colby Sawyer roars back to tie it up 4-4 in the 79th, and Wentworth goes back up 5-4 in the 81st minute with a roof shot from the right side of the box.

UPDATE:  On the other hand, Salve Regina's defense is holding (barely) against UMass Boston

Still tied 0-0 in the 89th minute despite UMass Boston outshooting Salve Regina 24-9

UPDATE:  Swat 2 - Yeshiva 0 in the 40th minute.

Kind of a camp cupcake opener for Swat, but Yeshiva is hanging in there.  Swat did lose starting defender Nate Kim to injury in the 2nd minute.  Hope he's OK

C-S tied it up again in the 86th minute

To heck with these uber defensive DIII coaches!  These teams were playing like the coaches think the mindset of kids these days in recruiting is about stats, not wins (and they may be right).

FINAL:

Salve Regina 0 - UMass Boston 0

These coaches played like defense is all that matters! (J/K Salve Regina hung on against a barrage of shots)

Reviving this thread to recommend a non-conference game from Region X that might not be on other people's radar screens and will be available on a free stream.

Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 pm Central

Mary Hardin-Baylor (NPI #41 10-1-2, 3-0 in the ASC) at Southwestern (NPI #15 11-0-2, 3-0 in the SAA)

There aren't many top non-conference games played this late in the season and this should be a good one.

Kuiper that is a big game!  Do either of those teams have a good chance vs Trinity?

Also tonight:

Chicago travels to North Park

Lynchburg visits Hampden-Sydney

Medgar Evers (1-10-1) at Baruch (2-4-4)
NY Subway 6 transfer to the 4/5.

The big question for both Mary Hardin-Baylor and Southwestern is whether they have enough offense to keep pace with Trinity, because very few teams have shown the ability to keep them out of the back of the net for a full 90 minutes.  Trinity's currently averaging almost 3 goals per game.  The fewest goals Trinity has scored all season was in a 1-0 win against Texas Lutheran and TLU basically sold out on offense to do that and was limited to two shots all game to 15 for Trinity.

Southwestern has had offensive outbursts (7 against Austin and 5 against Sewanee last game), but they have been shut out twice (Concordia and UC Santa Cruz) and limited to 1 goal against Berry and Oglethorpe.  Trinity beat Concordia 3-0, UC Santa Cruz 2-1, Berry 4-1 and Oglethorpe 2-1.  Mary Hardin-Baylor beat Concordia 3-1, but has largely played a weaker schedule than the other teams.  It's best results were ties with Whitman and Colorado College early in the season and it only beat Hardin-Simmons 1-0 in the last game.  Southwestern will be a tough test for the Cru.

Although I think Southwestern wins tonight 2-0 (unless they go on another binge like they did last week against a pretty good Sewanee team) it's worth noting the Cru's record against Southwestern all time is 7-3-1, against Trinity 4-9-0.  I agree UMHB has not played the level of competition Trinity has and another example in addition to those Kuiper pointed out lost 1-3 to a St. Thomas team that Trinity led 2-0 before the match was called in the 25th minute due to inclement weather.

Southwestern is playing incredibly well on defense this season, allowing only four goals in thirteen matches while scoring 30.  Combine that with the long-standing rivalry with Trinity in all sports (it's not quite HSU-UMHB but it's pretty intense) and you don't know what will happen on the last day of the regular season.  I'm sure the Pirates are motivated to get a second win in the series (1-34-4).

For their part, Trinity has given up seven goals in eleven matches while scoring 32.

It figures the impossible to pronounce Hsieh-Bailey (shi-ay, but with a subtle, barely noticeable i sound) would go off after this post. I watched sporadically, but from what I saw, a great game.  Chicago looks good.

One Tuesday 10/21 game between out WEST and NORTH teams that caught my eye:

Lake Forest (NPI #6) @ Wisconsin-Whitewater (NPI #54) at 3 PM Central

Other than an impressive 3-0 home victory over Calvin, I'm not entirely convinced by Lake Forest. They are the epitome of a team that has climbed the NPI ranks by beating everyone placed in front of them, rather than by playing a particularly difficult schedule.  Whitewater has arguably played a stronger schedule (including Augsburg, North Park, Loras), but they haven't won against their toughest opponents.  They have kept those games very close though.  It's a good test for both teams.

Hopkins just beat F&M 4-0, not W&L.  Suggests they may have turned a corner, but also suggests F&M is dragging toward the finish line.

Wisconsin-Whitewater 2 - Lake Forest 1

Whitewater hands Lake Forest its first loss.  Huge for Whitewater's NPI ranking.  Lake Forest gets a little bump in its SoS, but also takes a bit of a hit from Calvin's loss to Albion.

15-0 is still quite impressive, congrats to Lake Forest. They have four games left, the next two regular season games won't help their NPI and the best two opponents in conference tourney will get them ending between 9-12 in NPI. Still hosting a pod which is a great achievement and 19-1 would be an historic season no matter what happens in NCAA. Good luck to them.

Game to watch out WEST on Wednesday 10/22 at 5:30 pm Pacific

Whitworth (NPI #171) @ Whitman (NPI #58)

The Battle of the Whits is always a good matchup, but this year Whitman is in first place and Whitworth is in third place in the Northwest Conference.  In the first matchup between the teams at Whitworth, Whitman won 3-1, but that was almost a month ago and Whitman, while still undefeated at 9-0-5 (8-0-2 in the NWC), had some shaky results the last two games, tying Willamette 1-1 on an 86th minute goal and beating Pacific 3-2 on an 83rd minute goal.  Whitman has been living dangerously for awhile and is only two points clear of second place Pacific Lutheran, which is also undefeated in the NWC at 7-0-3.  I doubt this game affects anything other than the NWC AQ, but it could have implications for Colorado College and Mary Hardin-Baylor, both of whom have tied Whitman and are relying on those half-wins for NPI points.

15-0 is impressive, but the average NPI for the teams Lake Forest faced (before UW-W) was 201.  They faced and defeated two top 100 teams during the run; Calvin (42) 3-0 and IWU (61), 1-0.  They slipped by #380 Lawrence 2-1.

Whitman would be up to around 45 with the win tonight. Need to win out though to get close to at-large bid area. No conference tourney in NWC, last regular season game is against Pacific Lutheran and that could be a de-facto conference title game with only one getting a bid.

Long time listener, first time caller.

MIAC / North region D3 soccer fan located in Minnesota.

This Saturday #4 St. Olaf travels to #7 Augsburg. The Oles clinched their 3rd straight regular season MIAC crown on Tuesday and look to become the 5th team in MIAC history to go unblemished across the conference season (10-0). Standing in their way are the Auggies who are unbeaten at home this year (7-0-1). St. Olaf sports an away record of 7-1 with their only loss of the season coming at the hands of UW-Superior (who took them down in the round of 32 last season via penalties).

A benchmark game for both squads as the calendar flips to November. Should be a entertaining match with immense quality on both sides of the ball. Can't wait to tune in!

Mary Hardin-Baylor (NPI #36) @ Trinity (TX) (NPI #14)

This game could be of huge importance for Mary Hardin-Baylor.  Although the ASC is down to 4 teams this season, they are still holding a conference tournament.  So, the fact that UMHB has wrapped up the ASC regular season championship doesn't guarantee that they will get the ASC automatic bid.  Mary Hardin Baylor is currently #36 in the NPI, which doesn't give them a lot of wiggle room if they don't win the AQ.  If they can beat Trinity or even tie them, that might be enough to make the AQ not critical.

Trinity, on the other hand, probably doesn't need this game considering that they are also getting the SoS bump of playing Southwestern on Saturday and maybe again in the SAA tournament, but if they lost this game and then also were upset in the SAA tournament, they might be at risk of tumbling.  On the flip side, if Trinity could beat UMHB and beat Southwestern (perhaps twice if they meet in the SAA tourney), that might insure that they would get hosting rights, possibly beyond the first two rounds.  That would be huge for their chances of advancing in the NCAA tourney.

W&L moves into good position tomorrow, but gets a poor draw in ODAC tourney (Randolph, low NPI points), win that and likely get Bridgewater again for a must-win game to stay in the tourney in ODAC semifinal.

Didn't see this one coming, but Denison tying Wabash means that they are firmly on the bubble now after being #1 for many weeks earlier this year. They have John Carroll, a NCAC semi-final, and possibly a final left.

SCIAC preview of Thursday night games

Pomona-Pitzer @ Redlands 7 pm

The two teams played twice already this season, on Sept. 13 and Oct. 8, and tied 2-2 both games, which is telling since the first game they played P-P was 4-0-1 and Redlands was 1-3 after its long road trip, while the second game Redlands was in the midst of a 5 game winless streak.  The first game was also at Redlands at night, while the second game was at Pomona during the day on a slower grass field where Redlands often doesn't play as well.  So, the bottom line is the two teams match up pretty well regardless of the circumstances.  Right now, though, Redlands is probably the hotter team.  Zach Darmanyan is back and has been a difference maker and opened up space for Anders Beckton and others.  They are on a 7 game unbeaten streak and a 5 game winning streak.  They aren't as dominant as years past and they haven't had a single shutout all season, but they have played just enough defense to limit teams to a goal.  Pomona-Pitzer has been a little more up and down this year, but has won the last two games by identical 2-0 scores.  An interesting stat is that Pomona-Pitzer has scored first in both games the teams have played.  Redlands seems to play with more energy coming from behind and P-P has had trouble holding onto leads.

La Verne @ Occidental

Oxy is coming into this game on a three game winning streak, but the one loss before that streak began was a 1-0 loss to La Verne at Oxy on Oxy's Senior Night.  In the one other time the two teams played, they tied 3-3 after Oxy held a 2-0 lead from the 36th until the 73rd minutes, before allowing three ULV goals over an 8 minute stretch.  Oxy was bailed out by a Devin Bening tying goal with 13 seconds left in the game.  The key for Occidental is corner kicks.  They have both a height advantage and get strong service.  The problem is that when they don't hit on their offensive corners, they are vulnerable to counter attacks with their bigs in the opponent's box.  As in the Chapman game, La Verne's GK, Hector Duenas-Pena could be the deciding factor.  Oxy has had some good goalkeeping, but they've played four different keepers, with three of them starting at least three games as they searched for the right player.  Carlos Abram has taken the starting spot during Oxy's run to 1st in the SCIAC, but he doesn't have a ton of experience as he has only played 9 games over two years.

Now that Mary Hardin-Baylor isn't solidly within the At-Large line, this isn't a potential bid stealer conference.  Nevertheless, it would be a big upset if UMHB didn't win the ASC tournament

cross-posting from the Go WEST thread

ASC semifinals preview

Howard Payne @ Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 pm central

If ASC wasn't down to a 4 team league this year before reinforcements arrive for 2026, Howard Payne (NPI #374) wouldn't be anywhere near a conference semifinals.  They are 1-12-3 and have been outscored 39-11 this season.  Plus, this game is being played at UMHB, where the Cru beat Howard Payne 6-0 on 9/27.  Having said that, HP has improved a little since then.  They beat Hardin-Simmons 2-0 the next game for their only win of the season and they only lost 2-1 to UMHB when the game was played at Howard Payne on 10/18.  If Howard Payne fans want any further straws to grasp, UMHB ended the regular season on a slight downturn, losing to Trinity 3-1 and tying Hardin-Simmons 2-2.  Still, it would take a monumental turn of events for Mary Hardin-Baylor to lose this game.  They know they need to win the ASC and can't rely on an at-large bid after falling to #60 in the NPI.  I expect UMHB will come out flying, bury HP early, and then rest up their starters for the ASC final.

Hardin-Simmons v. East Texas Baptist at 1 pm central

This should be a much more competitive match than the other ASC semifinal game.  The two teams tied 2-2 on 10/1 and then H-S won 3-2 on 10/17.  H-S edged out ETBU for second seed with a 2-2-2 conference record, compared to 2-3-1 for ETBU, but H-S was unbeaten the second time through the conference, while ETBU's only win in its second pass was against Howard Payne.  If H-S lets it turn into a shooting match, ETBU might have the edge.  They've scored 44 goals compared to 25 for H-S.  Hardin-Simmons relies upon CM Benny Lube (6 assists) to set up F James Webb (7 goals), while ETBU has a more diversified attack, with 6 players scoring 4 goals or more and 8 scoring at least 3 goals.  My guess is H-S will try to stay more organized and disciplined defensively and wait for opportunities to exploit ETBU on the counter and in transition.

SCAC quarterfinal games on Thursday

Hendrix v. Austin at 5 pm Central

Austin just beat Hendrix 3-1 on 10/24 in a game where Hendrix generally led on all offensive stats, but Austin was more clinical in front of goal.  It scored in the 8th minute, which allowed it to play the low block and counter attack/transition game that it uses to generate most of its offense.

LeTourneau v. Concordia TX at 8 pm Central

LeTourneau and Concordia tied 1-1 in their only meeting, but that was so early in the season (9/26) that I'm not sure it sheds much light on this matchup.  LeTourneau really turned it on toward the end of the season, going 4-2 the last six games, including a 1-0 loss to Colorado College.  Concordia comes in with a 4 game unbeaten streak and it ended the season with a tough 0-0 draw against Texas Lutheran.  Neither team scores a ton of goals and both teams have fairly stout defenses.  If it comes down to goalkeeper play, Concordia might have the advantage.  Concordia's Leonel Cuellar leads the SCAC in Saves and was second in save percentage at .829.

Saint Johns v. Macalester
Gustavus Aldophus v. St. Olaf

The MIAC re-seeds their tournament so it is:
St. Olaf vs St. John's
Macalester vs Gustavus

Should be some good ones.
A Johnnie win probably means 5 MIAC teams in the NCAA which I'm fairly certain would be the most the conference has ever gotten in. 4 might even be the most ever, and that's virtually guaranteed at this point.

Might even have three (possibly 4 depending on many factors??) MIAC teams as 1st/2nd round hosts as well. Augsburg and Olaf are surely hosts, and I would think the winner of Macalester (currently NPI #18) vs Gustavus (#13) would have a decent chance as well. Though I'll admit I don't have a great grasp on the hosting selection process.

I normally do not get excited about the rivalry, but the men playing in Holland and the women playing in Grand Rapids, both with 12:00 / 1:00 start times.  These are games of the day quality games.

Two other games that should be fun.

Luther vs Wartburg - Luthers last ever game as a member of the American Rivers.

Lake Forest vs Grinnell - Can Lake Forest sweep the Midwest Conference or does Grinnell pull off an upset to give the Midwest Conference 2 bids.

SCIAC Championship game preview

Redlands @ Occidental at 7:30 PM Pacific

Two traditional SCIAC powers that started out the season poorly turn things around and end up back in the championship game for a re-match of the 2023 Championship game where Oxy beat Redlands 3-0.  According to the box score, that match had 4,200 in attendance.  Redlands fans typically travel well and Occidental has an all out push to get people to come to the game.  They even filmed a promo for the game on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQxIr3DEsD2/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link) with Oxy President Tim Stritikus out at the stadium encouring fans/students to attend.  I doubt they will get anywhere close to the attendance of the 2023 game, but it still should be a good atmosphere.

The last time these two faced each other this season was over a month ago on 10/4 at Oxy when Occidental beat Redlands 3-0.  That was a different Redlands team though.  Redlands was coming off a loss to CMS and a tie to Cal Lutheran - the two teams that finished at the bottom of the SCIAC table - and Zach Darmanyan, who had scored in the Bulldogs last victory before going down with injury, was not available for the Oxy game.  Redlands only had 1 shot on goal the whole game against Oxy and that was credited to the Redlands goalkeeper. I've found that Darmnayan has been the difference maker for the team this year.  They simply didn't have a balanced offensive attack or room for the offense to maneuver while he was out of the lineup in the middle of the season.  Since he's been back, the team has gone on a 7 game unbeaten streak and 6 game winning streak (6-0-1) to close out the season and start the SCIAC tournament, partly because of Darmanyan's return and partly because younger players got experience while he was out and now provide more quality depth.

It's also not the same Oxy team, though.  The last time the two teams played Oxy was pretty inconsistent. You didn't know what team you were going to get from game to game.  They blew out some teams and were powerless against others.  Oxy is now on a 4 game winning streak where they have averaged 3 goals per game and they are coming off a 4-1 thrashing of La Verne.  SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year Devin Bening has had 3 goals and 3 assists during that stretch.

The one worrying sign is the Oxy goalkeepers.  The starter for the first seven games of the season isn't even on the roster anymore. His replacement, Carlos Abram, who was a SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week in early October, is either injured or was benched.  Abram's replacement, Sammy Gramlich (Jr), who played his first collegiate games this season and did pretty well in two starts, was then replaced by another Junior, Casey Scott, who had only played 15 minutes before this season and was given a start against CMS where he gave up 3 goals, before heading to the bench again in favor of Gramlich.  Then, Scott started again in the SCIAC semifinals against La Verne, gave up a goal, and was pulled at halftime for Gramlich.  I'm a fan of giving more than 1 goalkeeper legit game action during the season so you aren't caught playing someone for the first time in a high importance situation, but Oxy seems just plain unsure about who is their starting goalkeeper.  I don't know if its because of injury/personal situations or form, but it's not ideal to be that unsettled at such an important spot this late in the year.  On the other hand, if Oxy keeps scoring 3-4 goals a game, it might not matter much.

Colorado College v. Texas Lutheran at 2 pm Central to decide the SCAC champion

Pacific Lutheran @ Whitman at 1:45 pm Pacific will decide the NWC regular season champion and AQ (not conference tournament).

Since Whitman and Colorado College tied each other earlier this season, they might benefit for seeding purposes if each other wins (I don't think CC (#43) could sneak in if it loses in PKs and CC wins)
