We hear a lot about how tough Wooster's schedule is (and it has been, no doubt), but look at what OWU and to a lesser extent Allegheny have gone up against.  Of course, one of Wooster's tougher games (UST) was extraregional and thus not reflected above, but then again so was OWU's game vs. WashU.  The Bishops are battle-tested, and I think they may be on the verge of pulling it all together and going on a run.

I saw that right away, too. But make sure you look at the OOWP as well. OWU's OOWP is among the bottom four of the conference. So, OWU is winning against teams with good records, but those good records are coming aginst bad teams.

I could be easily missing a team, but off the top of my head, has Wooster played a defending national champion the following year?
I can't recall any times where Wooster has played the defending national champions the following year, but this won't be the first time a defending national champion has been invited to one of Wooster's annual tournaments.
Obviously, Wooster played OWU following their 1988 national championship. In fact, the Scots took two of three (regular season split and a win in the NCAC tournament) that year.

I used Google Maps, and it was 501 miles from Wooster to Rock Island, but when the addresses of the schools are used it is under 500 miles. Either way, it is a long trip for the Scots.

QuoteIs Brooklyn going to get a Pool C bid?

PABegg is better suited to discuss the numerical criteria, but that looks highly unlikely.

The Bridges were not listed in the first regional rankings which are a fair indication which teams the selection committee will have its eyes on.  Brooklyn's opponents winning percentage (.359) hurts.  No ranked teams had a percentage below .400.
Brooklyn stands at about #140 nationally, which is about 100 spots off of what they would need to be in Pool C contention. They are about #9 in the Atlantic Region, and even the top teams (Farmingdale and Richard Stockton) are on the bubble if they don't win the conference tournaments.

Brooklyn would need to be at about 2-3 losses on that weak a schedule to be in contention for a Pool C.

Looks like the CUNYAC has already started their conference tournament. (Seems awfully early, yet) Three of the top four teams (including Brooklyn) lost first round games at home. Brooklyn is now just looking for an ECAC bid at this point.

I have Wabash's in-region record as 10-4 (losses to Hanover, Kenyon, Wooster, Wittenberg).

So, should we vote as the regional committee might vote (using just the regional record), or should we rank the teams according to their actual strengths (or our perception of their actual strengths)?

Wooster's James Cooper started this season with 1,491 career points in 94 games (15.9 ppg.)  So far this season he has recorded 334 points (19.6), bringing his career total to 1,825 (16.4).  With eight games remaining, he'd have to average 21.9 ppg. the rest of the way to reach 2,000 in the regular season.  He's 133 points (16.6+) from passing Bryan Nelson and moving into second all-time on Wooster's scoring list; 1st place Tom Dinger is well out of reach at 2,370.

Just for those who don't know, Dinger did that without the 3-pointer, having played 1967-1971. I would have loved to see him play.

I hope this answer to DCHopeNut's question is not taken the wrong way, but ...

I am one of the voters who ranked Wooster at 1. The easiest answer is that I am a Wooster grad and fan. But that is not the complete answer.

I have Wooster, Hope and Capital all in my top 3, and I have to sort them from there. (I am beginning to re-tink my Capital ranking, but that is not part of this discussion.) If I look at the Wooster and Hope results so far, I find it easier to evaluate the Wooster results because I know more about the teams that they have played. I don't know anything about Cornerstone, Aquinas (x2) and Marygrove other than Hope plays them every year. The D3 schedule that Hope has played so far is very impressive, but it is only six games (5-1, 2-0 MIAA, 5-1 GL). Wooster has played ten D3 teams (9-1, 4-0 NCAC, 5-0 GL). As the season moves on, there will be more for me to judge on.

And just because I am a Wooster grad/fan does not mean that I will always vote them #1. I will evaluate all teams fairly.

I have been thinking about ScotsFan's comments on Wooster's lack of fundamental baseball. He said that Wooster mashes its way through the NCAC, which is entirely true. But maybe that is exactly the time that the Scots can work on the fundamentals. As much as I might smile when I read about scores like the 14-1, 24-3, 12-1, 19-3 sweep of Hiram, I guess I'd rather see 4-1, 4-3, 2-1, and 6-3 game scores if it meant that the Scots played (nearly) error free and moved runners over rather than hit the long ball.

I actually saw parts of the 8-2, 26-1, 33-15, and 26-1 bludgeoning of Kenyon in 1986, and it was a lot of fun. But that team only had a 36-14 record and went 1-2 in the regionals, a pretty typical Wooster post-season result.

I made a snide comment about Marietta being "The Program" in Ohio college baseball earlier, but it wasn't completely meant in jest. Marietta has shown success year after year after year, and maybe Wooster has to take a look at how things are done down there. I would easily trade a few meaningless regular season wins each year if it meant that the Scots would be in Wisconsin (or wherever) in May.

Tim Pettorini has had success at Wooster. In fact, he has coached more than 1/2 of Wooster's all-time wins. But it seems like the Scots have not made the adjustments necessary to step up to the next level. What will it take for Pettorini and the Scots to be more like Marietta?

No one has responded to Pat's comment on the last page.

One might think that there could be a false sense of confidence based on the current state of the NCAC. But, the Scots were 11-0 before they played their first conference game, and are 20-2 against all teams not in the NCAC.

According to today's P-D, Rick Drushal was released by the Browns yesterday. Too bad for him.

So now that you seem accept that it wasn't completely about your JV pitchers giving up runs you decide to blame it on the position players?

I thought Marietta was THE program in Ohio baseball? If that is the case, second- and third-string position players should be good enough to put some runs up against Wooster. Or maybe the Scots aren't that bad a ball club themselves?

I have stayed out of the back and forth with Spence all season, but it is getting tiring. All you do, Spence, is make excuses. Excuses for Marietta losses, excuses for other teams' losses to Wooster, excuses for Ohio weather, and whatever else.

Marietta didn't have to play Wooster. Neither did ONU, or any other OAC team. Wooster is trying to play the best teams that they can given that the NCAC competition, for the most part, is generally pretty weak. Do you think Wooster doesn't want more challenge from Allegheny, Hiram, and Kenyon?

Whatever your problem is with Wooster, just let it simmer inside, and try to give a more level-headed analysis of the game. I know that you are capable of it because I see it on other boards.
