I find it hard to believe that the Hope assistant isn't a possilbility. He has been at Hope a long time according to the program and they have won some games there. Must be he's not the profile they were looking for at IWU if all this conversation is true.

Augiedad,
What is your source of info? Has IWU already notified those not selected?

I feel confident in my Augustana/NCAA coaching/misc. D3-based sources about every name for the IWU job I have posted here, just as I was confident in the same sources who confirmed that Scott Trost was leaving for Lewis the day before it was announced. I am sure of:
John Tharp (Lawrence)
Mike McGrath (Chicago)
Todd Raridon (North Central)
Ron Rose (Bloomington H.S.)
John Baines (Elmhurst, Asst Coach)
Rick Samuels (Eastern Illinois, former head coach)
Now this comes from a different source, so I do not yet know how reliable, but I recently heard another name --
Pat Cunningham (Trinity)
Not clear if Cunningham applied, or if the source was pretty sure he would. Not very solid info.
I have heard from a pretty solid source that IWU has over 100 applicants for the job. The real intrigue would be to know who are some of those 90+ guys we haven't identified. Most of the names above were pretty obvious going in.
Would seem to me IWU is going to end up with a great coach.
I heard that the Hope assistant whom I wondered about is interested. If the stats are correct from their tourney program earlier this season, he has been at Hope for a large share of the current coach's years as head coach. I agree....seems like IWU will have a great coach as it's next leader of the Titans.

You must be referring to Matt Neil, a former Hope player. He's been an assistant for at least 16 years and coached the JV's while I was at Hope. He's the man behind Hope's bigman success over the years.
I think he would make a good head coach someday, but I'm not sure thats his interest. He's a teacher first and formost.
Within the next 5 years or so Hope will be going through this same situation.
I think that he's the guy then. Will he be the next coach at Hope then? He seemed really in tune with the games that weekend and honestly appeared as the head coach at times. Perhaps IWU would be wise in getting him interested in the job.
Don' really want him in the CCIW though.

I would imagine that alot of interest will be shown that's for sure. When Wheaton was up at Hope this year, I noticed in the Hope program that their one assistant might be head coaching material. Not sure of his name but seemed really involved and according to the program, knows what it takes to win in D3.
I am sure this search will be interesting.

29-3, MIAA Tournament Champs and Sweet 16 of NCAA tournament. I don't see what the problem is.
The problem is that a team that well-stocked should have gone further.
Lost to the national runner-up on that team's home floor. Should have gone further? Perhaps, but the bracket didn't really allow for that.
Amen to that Pat. At what point will the NCAA realize that "even though it's DIII" having a great share of the nation's top five come from the Great Lakes means movement of teams around to create a "best of the best" tournament. The entire selection process needs tweaking if you ask me.....or even if you don't ask me. Why not seed teams nation wide?....something better than putting the top teams in the country in early brackets to beat up on one another.
Wittenberg and Hope were two of the top teams in the land all year. Let them prove their mettle and meet in the semi's. Just a thought.

Just wondering.....Olivet gives a HUGE financial break for juco transfers on tuition etc. I am wondering if other schools do the same for transfers or if they lose out because they didn't go to that particular school in the first place.
BTW, you DO play the games to win, but when it seems like a job and the fun is lost, these guys probably were ready to have fun again.
INSIGHT: I have heard that the financial aid packages at Hope are overall LOWER than competing MIAA schools.

I think this was discussed a LONG time ago and we all concluded that each of Hope's transfers was recruited by the Dutchmen when they were seniors in high school. Sounds like they were tired of dealing with the "stuff" that goes with a "full ride"...I.E. mandatory off season workouts, film time, practices on Sundays, etc. Oh, and I almost forgot, probably not having alot of fun.
I think the fact that these kids contacted the coaches about transferring says alot about what they want out of an education. It is a game, the last I checked and games are PLAYED to have fun. Let this whole issue lay down please.

Saw the MIAA well represented at the finals.....saw Hope's assistant, Jody May from Albion, Coach Turner, Olivet's coach. Great time, I imagine to see players watching the games.

Sturd,
you speak with such confidence.....you must be on the inside track here? Or is that just your opinion.

Realist,
I tend to agree....just seems like the playing of Witt has been in Springfield more often than not.
Regarding the former players.....great to hear of Shu, Neil, Henry, Benson, Heerdt, etc. That group of '80 and on who helped put Hope back on the map of championships is fun to remember. Ending the run of the tighty knighties comes to mind in 1980, beating the Knights at Calvin for the first time since the Vietnam War...ok, not that long.....but, nevertheless, beating them at Knollcrest. Those were the days in which the Civ was rather empty to start the season in 1979 and full at the end.
Great times to be a fan that's for sure....just as it is now. The league hadn't separated quite so much then I don't think. Anyway....thanks for kickstarting my tired brain.
I see that Neil is and assistant.....has he always been one?

Did Stan coach at Alma. I think that Bill (Colonel) Klenk was the hoops coach when Dan was there....or Chris Ragsdale....maybe Stan DID in fact coach. I have always known him to be the coach/AD at Okemos.
I know that Hope has recruited tons of Okemos kids, only to lose them to scholarship schools or state schools with cheaper tuition.
With all that said, Dan is one of the finest coaches in the state, blessed with players who work hard and happen to have some talent.

I remember a highly touted Wittenberg team coming into the Civic and the Hope boys taking it at the mighty Tigers in the paint. That was the one and only time the Hope program has played Witt outside of the confines of Witt's gym, I believe. Hmmmmm imagine that, Hope has played Witt six or so times and only one has been in Holland.....can't help but wonder how that happens so often....even when Hope is ranked higher......
Good 'ol boy system? At some point you wonder.

Yeah, those two have been at GVWs side for a long time, but neither is qualified to be employed as a professor at Hope. Thus, Davelaar and Neal won't be the next coach. I understand coaching women is much different than coaching men, but the success Morehouse has had with the women grants consideration.
P.S. GVW will quit sooner than you think. A trip to Salem this year may have been his farewell.
I'm not so sure that the women's coach is a professor at Hope either. I still think that the next coach will be an upper ad decision if /when that day occurs.
