Quote from: nescac1 on January 18, 2026, 05:35:14 PMJefffan, ironically losing Tom Parker to Amherst (which coincided with the start of Amherst's golden age of athletics before things rapidly changed in recent years) I believe was when things started to change for Williams. Beyond that, I really don't know, although it's clear we haven't had a President or Trustees who really seem particularly interested in athletics for quite some time.  I think there were some segments at Williams (particularly faculty some of whom had some nasty public commentary about athletes) who were never terribly psyched about Williams former reputation as a jock school and I'm assuming those factions became more influential over time.

I'd also note that competition got a lot tougher.  Midd and Trinity always had powerhouse teams but Tufts and Wesleyan just never seemed to care about sports at all until that changed radically over the past 10-15 years.  They were always sleeping giants as bigger more urban proximate schools with grad programs. And Colby is clearly trying to join that group, thus far without the same sort of results, but they will get there I suspect. So not only did the institutional emphasis gradually seem to change at Williams - and later Amherst, more dramatically and suddenly, but it was the same time that the competition got much tougher.  Look at hoops - as many non W/A teams made final fours in the past two seasons as the 30 prior years.

The recent golden age of Williams Athletics ended when (1) in 2009 Morty Schapiro, the Williams President, left to take the job as President of Northwestern, and (2) in 2010 Harry Sheehy, the Williams AD, left Williams to take the AD job at Dartmouth. Williams won the the Directors Cup every year that Sheehy was AD and Schapiro was President. Schapiro was a big supporter of Athletics at Williams and Sheehy was a brilliant leader of the Athletics Department.

Adam Falk was a disaster as President of Williams when he followed Schapiro.  Maud Mandel (current President) is apathetic (many will say pathetic) when when it comes to sports at Williams.  Melendy took over as AD for Sheehy and she has presided over the decline of Williams' sports.

The Trustees are in the midst of preparing a significant plan for a major and much needed upgrade of the sports facilities at Williams.  Realistically, it's at least five years (likely more) before anything significant is completed to upgrade the sports facilities.  Williams will continue to fall further behind other NESCAC schools.

While Dunne is a Bates grad, his wife is a Gettysburg alum who was an All-American on the women's lacrosse team.

My daughter played lax at Midd.  Tufts fans (and parents) were by far the worst in NESCAC (and second only to Salisbury nationally).

AmherstStudent05, I wish I could remember Williams' 2003 non-league schedule as well as you do, but I have no idea, and alas, the Sports Info archives don't go back that far, which is a shame!

https://web.archive.org/web/20041225112352/http://www.d3hoops.com/school_info.php?school=Williams&team=m&year=2003

Above is the link to Williams 2003 schedule.  I believe Hamilton (coached by Tobin Anderson) was ranked that season in addition to Amherst.  The Ephs beat Hamilton twice that season (once in the regular season and again in the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 game -- both games were at home).  In 2003, Hamilton was in the Liberty League, not the NESCAC.

Well, having lived away from Vermont for 25 years now, I'll probably be overdressed.  Maybe the HardyStrong sweatshirt?  I've got a seat on press row, but I may sit in the crowd, Friday.  My uncle is planning to come, at least for the first half.  He's worked in the library at Middlebury for 30 years, but says he hasn't been to a basketball game before.

Does he at least go to the women's lacrosse games!?!?  :o

The Oneonta game was the one that I feared from the beginning. Tuesday night, rushing to get out of class & get to the bus, 2+ hours down, late in the semester. Everybody writing papers or studying before the game. Williams has lost that game several times in recent years. I am very pleased with the win.

Toad - I agree.  The mid-week December road games were tough to play while at Williams for all the reasons you noted.

Great win for the Midd women's lax team versus Tufts on Sunday.  A dominant 4th quarter which saw Midd outscore Tufts 7-1 led to a resounding 13-5 victory.

KP has won three Nat'l Championships at Midd since replacing the legend -- Missy Foote.  KP also won a Natty as the HC at Trinity.  KP has taken a great program and brought it to new heights.  She's a great coach.

A lot of credit should also go to Asst. Coach Amy Patton.  After Midd lost in the 2018 National Championship game to Gettysburg, KP realized she needed help coaching the offensive side.  KP is a brilliant coach of lax defense.  Her version of the backer zone has stymied teams season after season.  After the 2018 loss to Gettysburg (a game that Midd likely wins easily with any semblance of offensive flow that game), KP hired Patton to take over the offense.  The results have been astounding.  Two record-breaking seasons of team goals scored and two National Championships in two seasons.  I believe that Midd's record since Patton joined the coaching staff is 48-2!  Credit to KP that she realized that she needed help to run the offense and her decision to bring in Patton has produced remarkable results.

Midd loses some great seniors, but there is a ton of talent returning, including Jane Early.  Midd is well positioned for a three-peat next year (the Salisbury Natty in 2021 doesn't count because Midd didn't play at all that season).

Latest rumor is that Tobin Anderson will be hired as the next HC at FDU.

He's moving up to D-1 after a successful run at D-II St. Thomas Aquinas.

Williams has had strangely few truly elite guards over the years ... after Crotty, Wang and Casey it starts to get thin (guys like Schultz and Aronowitz I'd classify as wings).  Center on the other hand has been consistently great - Chapin, Coffin, Whittington, Mayer, Karp, with Nate Karren looking like the latest in a long line of great ones.  And on the wing, Nogelo, Duncan, Schultz etc., also pretty loaded.

I'm dating myself a bit regarding Williams guards, but several of the best players in Williams hoops history include:

Harry Sheehy
Artie Pidoriano
Tim Walsh
Garcia Major

All guards.

Trinity (tomorrow) and CC (Sat) still on at Middlebury.

If the Midd games are still on, there's obviously a Covid issue in the Ephs program.

Williams website is now listing the SUNY IT game as postponed.

I assume that it's COVID issues in the SUNY IT program and not Williams because the Utica game is listed as on for tomorrow.

I'm not sure why the Williams website hasn't announced this, but Williams is out of the W&L tournament. They quickly picked up @Suny IT on Wednesday at 5PM and @Utica at 2PM on Thursday. The game at Yeshiva on Sunday is still on, I believe. There are no fans allowed at Suny IT, but fans are welcome at Utica and Yeshiva.

Very nice pivot by Williams to pick up games with SUNT IT and Utica after the cancellation of the W&L tournament.

Yeshiva is scheduled to play #4 Illinois Wesleyan tomorrow night at Yeshiva.  According to the Yeshiva website, that game is still on (although given how fast Omicron is spreading in Manhattan, anything can happen.).  IWU's game at Mt. Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY (just north of the Bronx for you non-New Yorkers) scheduled for later today was cancelled.

Credit Yeshiva for scheduling IWU and Williams in back-to-back games over the Holidays.

Middlebury news:

"Middlebury has moved to remote instruction as of December 10. In alignment with COVID-19 protocols for team play, all athletic competitions will be postponed until further notice. Makeup dates for each competition will be posted at a later date."

Bucket and Old Guy - What is the mood at Midd??  I imagine there's an extraordinary amount of frustration.  I believe that almost everyone in the Midd College community (students, faculty, admins, etc.) is vaccinated.

The Polar Bears get a commitment from James McGowan, a 5-11 sharpshooter from the Middlesex Magic and Westwood HS (MA). He was the league MVP and a Boston Globe all-scholastic in 2019-20. Here's a link to video highlights: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/13766517/5e6ff43457982217a82e3d4e

McGowan reminds me a little bit of John DiBartolomeo, who was an AA  at U. of Rochester 7 or 8 years ago.

If he has a career anywhere near what DiB. did at UofR, Bowdoin will be very happy.
