The Pipers gave CON a scare tonight as they got within 2 but just ran out of time 73 - 71.  Five guys in double figs.  Two in street clothes, one of whom should be getting that Auggie elbow imprint removed from the side of his nose this week.

Linz answered with 26.

Good night.

Insert your favorite phrase.  Ouch, uff da, and "or oh crap not again" come to mind.

HAM @ Auggie was another afternoon of watching the otherwise Magic Clute Flute spend more time with the trainer than he did on the floor and we all know what that means.  No blood, no foul, but it looked like it might be a broken nose.

DP - Based upon the team performance on Monday it doesn't appear that Mutiny on Hewitt is the case, but your historical reference was impressive.  +K!

Rather, these guys will all have their own answers to the ever-popular job interview question, "Tell us about a situation that you had to handle adversity."  Life's lessons come in many forms.

We learn and move on.

Inquiring Minds Want To Know

re: the departures from the Piper roster.  The worst kept secrets on the HU campus indicate there had been a pattern of, "The floggings will continue until morale improves."

To continue our animal analogy theme of the week, it sounds like Kaiser and Baron Zev might even have been the canaries in the coal mine as a negative environment hit rock bottom.  'Not sure which straw broke the camel's back but there's a long list of known rants and insults to pick from.  What is known is that two guys had absolutely had it and had the guts (or enough other anatomical parts) to take bold action.

For the sake of MIAC credibility and teamwork let's hope this is just a bump in the road and not roadkill.  The stats from the W last night look like the guys are playing as a team again, the minutes were distributed among enough guys that they weren't gassed in OT and Whitmore is directing his rage toward the refs.

Sometimes that's ok.

The cold temps must be getting to me. Day 2 rant.. . . .

Edit:  Shades of Nick Carr at SMU?? Baron Zev returns to the Hamline & scores 5 points,  & grabs 4 boards in the game against the Jays.  What madness is taking place at Snelling & Hewitt?  Prophet  tell us what's happening.

Zev gets the work the system award.  Kudos for absolutely workin' Whitmore, who, in previous games managed to overlook him completely.  He went from riding pine to 21 minutes??  What kind of message does that send?

Meanwhile it looks like Smith's consistency pays off and he chalks up win # 680.

Clarify for us WerFans.  what did you mean by this statement?  Did Baron file an appeal, meet with AD Dan O'Brien, have a Kyle Foster moment in practice & was temporarily relegated to the doghouse & returned, Whitmore changed his mind etc. etc.  Curious minds need to know.  ;)

Will check the Hamline grapevine and post later.  For now the facts are no to all of the above.

However, funny that,  "Foster moment" should return to the board right now because it sounds like the afternoon in C'ville DID include one of those.  Was anybody there and can fill in the details?  It sounds like the SJU student section was like a bunch of sharks that smelled blood and they proceeded to help Whitmore get in touch with his inner Bobby Knight.  Was it a shout about throwing a chair or did one actually go flying?

A few notes from the HAM/GAC box

* Carl Hipp scored a career-high 27 points (on 21 shots)
* Thrasher had 16 points (on 16 shots)
* Clearly Whitmore has a love for Pierre Harris, who in five games has averaged 20 minutes a game, has made just 5 shots on 19 attempts (3 ppg) and has 12 assists to 11 turnovers. I don't get it. . . .

You are not alone.  What an implosion on that once-popular Hewitt Ave. bandwagon.  It looks like the online roster is showing evidence of more issues than we can speculate about, but we will anyway.

Dang - those Dunkajolics were fun to watch, weren't they?  Sad to see the Barry Wohler connection gone too - Kaiser could contribute.

But this Gopher game is a great way to spend a cold night in January.  It's Tubby Time!

apologies on the hit and run, I don't have the internet at work.  I am not 100% sure on  what was wrong with clute but it seemed to be a leg injury, and it was nothing severe, just maybe a game.  I know he had bad shin splints in the pre-season but i am not sure exactly whats going on right now.  Anderson suffered a concussion in the CON loss.

So Sutherland is playing???

Halftime - Carl 41 Pipers 30 at a M*A*S*H* unit kind of game.

Our friend sez it is Clute's knee.  That's what is going on and it just doesn't sound like good news in the land of the flute.

Nah, I was actually poking fun at myself - I'm on the Scots, Tommies, Dawgs, Pipes wagons etc.  I had to run out during most of the 2nd half to your old stomping grounds Highland area - how did Zev look?

How is the old gal doing?

Zev had a few nice dunks and an alley-oop. He might be in the mix again.
I agree on seeing Zev get it going.  I was following it on the Web, however it was challenging to see those slams with some text HU webcasters have across the screen right over the basket.  However, the announcer was very good & made up for the video.  I am a bit curious about how Whitmore is handling the inside game.  Hipp seems to be sliding into a freshman slump.  He has 6'3" Kwame Herzog playing back up post tonight as he did against St. Scholastica...guarding their biggest man & picking up two quick fouls.  He seems to love Tanner Anderson, who is an okay player.  Brad Brake is buried on the bench never to be found & that Whitmore can't seem to figure out how to leverage the size of Erik Gusaas (I think Drake earlier referred to him as Nasty Inside Brusier or something like that), who if I recall correctly had some big games after the Foster exit late in last season.   The kid seems to take up a lot of space inside particularly on defense...so, I don't get it.  Is he simply a guard lover or no experience with real big men or both?  Regardless, the Pipers battle back to pull another one out with exceptional scoring by Clute & a little dunking exhibition by Zev!

Drake - Can categories still be added to the post-season award presentations?
Consider adding, "Team Most Likely To Cause PDF"  (and that would be Public Display of Frustration, or "going Foster" as one poster called it.)

We've covered the Carr incident but there's another that flew under the radar this week.  A little bird told about the intentional foul that was called in the final minute of OT in the Saints / Pipers game.  HU had battled back from an ugly deficit to force the OT.  One of the Saints apparently earned the foul by pretty much throwing Piper Luke Anderson to the floor.  Anderson made one of the two free throws, the Pipes got the ball and came away with a close win.

Maybe this influenced the final outcome of a close game?  Maybe not, given the momentum at that point.  In any case the frustration couldn't be missed.  Let's hope he completes his upcoming anger management class.

The funny thing is that Anderson is the poster child for long & lean and a stiff wind could probably have the same effect...

Pipes over SMU tonight.  What was the "T" incident for the Red Birds?

Not bad after that bus ride to Winona.

. . . i had to read about 17 pages to catch up

back on about page 265 someone posted a link to a girl rollerblading through cones...yes i can do all those tricks but i do them on rollerskates which have a wider base making it much more difficult to manuever through the narrow spaced cones and that is why i am the worlds greatest...that asia girls father offered me his house to train his daughter...i told him to keep his house and i gave her a free 30 minute lesson . . . .

Yes, CMOB, that was a non-MIAC note just to help fill a slow posting day. 'Impressive results from that lesson!    :o

Wow now we can officially begin to ponder the question...How good is Bethel really?

They give up 8 points to one kid in 14 seconds!! How is that even possible? Someone at the game have any insight on the issue?

Hey.  Temporarily MIA, called out and posting again.

The first big snowstorm of the season was reason enough to get out there and see what the new set of tires could do in the conditions.   The travel to & from the game at Bethlel turns offers a corny but true analogy for the young Pipes play vs. the Royals:  There were modest expectations and a chance that it might be dangerous or ugly at times.  As it turned out, results were far better than expected and it was an early season confidence builder.

To answer your question, Drake did a fine job in his play by play post.  The Bethel guys had the absolute deer in the headlights look during those final minutes.  It was evident that they just couldn't believe what was happening.

Whitmore might have a revolving door for starters but it seems there are plenty of minutes available.  If he's going to keep up this pace the next analogy might be that subs are rotating in like we're at a hockey game.  For now we'll just stick with the facts.

The photos on Mike Much's web site included some incredible split second action shots and some good defense on display as well.
