Also, I saw before that you said Flanagan was in this league, so I looked him up after I saw the other two.  He seems to be doing very well, his team cant score him any runs it looks like.

So far he has a 1.42 ERA through 19 IP, and has allowed only 3 run, and 13 hits while striking out 16 and holding hitters to just a .197 BA.  However, he currently however 0-2 as his team cant find the bats when he takes the mound I guess.

I also notice that New Bern plays Edenton today, I dont know if Flanagan will pitch or not for Edenton, but could be a game that sees three SCAC players involved with Flanagan, Owen and Horn.

Also, where are the other SCAC players playing like Daniel Vanaman from Rhodes, or Hunter Abrams or other All-Region selections such as Beezley, or Hadly so we can keep up to date on their summers as well?  I figured some players like Moore from Centre would not play because they graduated, but these players are all junors right?

Just to note, its Flanagan, not Ferguson.  But congrats to all these players who have done so well.

(Sadly Sewanee had no All-Americans, but next year will be the year)

Where would Millsaps size up with Rhodes in regards to this?  Would they have a better shot at getting the bid?

I must agree with you here.  To often it seems that whoever wins the conference will be the coach of the year.  Certainly Austin has turned it around big time, coming from a 2 win season 4 years ago, but I agree with Doc, it must be noted that they are still sub .500, and I dont think they will go anywhere in a regional.

I thought that Jeff Cleathnes should have won it last year for sure for being the most improved in DIII.  He went from an 11 win year in 2005 to a 28 win year in 2006 to a 36 win year in 2007.  Austin has gone from a 2 win year to a 22 win year.  Certainly solid, but not on the same level.  Austin may have won the SCAC, but their coach (and not to bash him) still sits at the helm of a sub .500 team, and being coach of the year should account for the entire year, and not simply the SCAC tournament.

I agree that he could be up for this award, what are the requirements to get this award? Must one win the SCAC?  I think last year that Jeff Cleathnes should have won.  I read that Rhodes was the most improved team in 2006 for DIII.  I am just curious as to what the criteria is that people look for when naming this award?

Well congrats to Austin for winning the SCAC, I didnt see any of the games, but looked at the stats online, and they all seemed to be good games.

It would have certainly been nice to see someone from the East win it, but Austin certainly had a great weekend it seems.  It will be interesting to see if Millsaps and/or Rhodes can get an at-large bid for regionals, as they have both certainly put together great seasons as well.

Now that SCAC games are over, what does everyone think the All-SCAC team will look like?  From Sewanne I think John Davis must be considered.  He hit .409 for the year with 4 HR's and only struck out 7 times in 115 AB's.  I know his fielding was a little off, but hitting wise he did just fine.  Tom Willis could also perhaps get a consideration.

My Opinion:
SCAC Player of the Year: Hunter Owen (Millsaps)
SCAC Pitcher of the Year: Robert Flanagan (Rhodes College)

Owen has had a great year, hitting .404 with 11 HR's, which is why I put him ahead of maybe Daniel Vanaman from Rhodes who is hitting .422 but with only 4 HR's.  He also has alot more stolen bases and alot fewer errors and a few more RBI's, but I think either one could get it.  Am I leaving anyone out here?

Flanagan was the SCAC pitcher of the year last year, and I think he deserves it again.  With a 12-1 record and a 2.49 ERA he certainly has made a case for it.  His 100 strikeouts are also quite impressive and he has thrown almost 100 Innings.  I dont know of anyone else that can really make a better case for it, but this is obviously just my opinion.  What does everyone think?

Please don't get that bad poetry started again.  :)

Rhodes held on to win 8-6.  Morrison went the 8 innings for SW and Flanagan went 6, giving up 5 runs, 9 hits and 7 walks.  Simmons came in and cooled off the SW run scoring for the last 3 innings.

That game ended around 3:50 so I'm guessing the start of the Millsaps-Austin game will be pushed back just a little.

According to the box score here, Flanagan went 6 innings, 2 runs, 8 hits, 5K's and 5 BB's.
Your stats are wrong.

Congrats to Rhodes winning, and I was schocked to see that Millsaps lost, but thats baseball for you, Austin killed the ball it looks like.

I predict that Millsaps easily handles Ogelthorpe. (2 games)

I think Rhodes will beat Trinity in a good series.  (3 games)

I think Austin will beat Centre.  Have never seen Austin play but if they can go 2-2 with Millsaps and finish 2nd in the West, I think they will beat Centre.  I think it will take 3 games however and be a close one.

Not sure on DePauw vs. Southwestern, Southwestern really turned it on lately and will have some momentum, but it will be a tough series and I will say DePauw takes it in 3 games.

I in no way wanted to belittle the accomplishments of the Rhodes baseball team.  The split with Emory is definatly huge for Rhodes and I appluad what they are doing.  Being a Sewanne fan, I am frustrated I suppose with the West's continued domination of the SCAC, and am very glad to see someone from the East having such success.  With the amazing season that Rhodes is having I suppose I am holding them to a higher standard, but I do not mean to take anything away from the Rhodes players and coaches, and I congratulate them on their amazing season and look foreward to the SCAC tournament.  I think it will come down to Millsaps and Rhodes, but that Rhodes will take it, which would be huge for the SCAC East and hopefully Rhodes can make some noise within the region and bring the spotlight onto the SCAC and help the other schools (such as Sewanee) turn their programs around and accomplish what Rhodes has accomplished.

I agree, I have alot of respect for DIII atheletes, but that being said, to be a championship team you have to figure out how to leave your schoolwork and papers behind for 9 innings and go out and play baseball.  If I had to guess, I would assume that no team that ever went far into the playoffs had players who were sitting in the locker room thinking about the fact that they played alot of games lately or that they really needed to go write a paper, they were thinking one thing, win the game.  To win a championship, at least in my mind, you have to put everything else aside, and just go out and play baseball.

Errors are going to happen, thats just life, but to be a real contender and a championship team, which I want for Rhodes (Sewannee hopefully one day), they have to set school aside and cut down on the errors, and if they get beat, I hope it is because they actually get beat and not because they beat themselves.  When you are a good team more is expected of you, and that many errors would not matter if Rhodes was .500, but I am sure they do not view their year thus far as a success, I would imagine they want more, but from here on in the teams they play will all be good teams, and errors will kill them.

Lynx_Fan, Rhodes beating those teams in the other games doesnt say anything about those teams in regards to the meltdown that was game 1.  When Rhodes plays well they can beat anyone, but when they dont they get embarrassed.

According the the box scores, Rhodes made 20 errors in the span of 5 games.  Hardly what I would call quality defense, or championship calliber.  If this happened early in the year fine, but if they continue to make this many errors, they are going to be 2 and done in regionals.  It might work when you play Rust, but it didnt work against LaGrange and obviously it didnt work in game one against Emory.  I am all for Rhodes going far, I want them to do well, I am tired of the SCAC west being the only side that goes anywhere, but Rhodes needs to get it together if they want to go anywhere.

So in the end, errors kill, and for that game at least, Rhodes did indeed look like a headless little league team, good teams dont lose because of errors, good teams lose because they get beat.

I am in Memphis visiting some relatives, and went out to watch the Rhodes/Emory game.  Let me just say this, I want Rhodes to do well, as I want to see the SCAC East go far, but that first game was terrible.  Flanagan actually pitched very well, but Rhodes looked like a little league team with their heads cut off.  They could not field, throw or hit behind Flanagan.  It really was a pathetic game.  Rhodes had more errors than they did hits.  I think they made 7 errors today for something like 11 on the weekend.  No nationally ranked team should be doing that regardless.

I saw where the individual national rankings came out.  It looks like Flanagan is leading the nation in wins with Devin Drag. (both 10-0)  Select company indeed.  It also looks like Holt is right behind them tied for 4th behind 7-8 other people with 8 wins.  Flanagan also is number 2 in the country in strikeouts, not far behind the number 1 man.  I am a little disappointed that Flanagan got the no-decision against LaGrange, as that would have made him the sole national leader, and it is always good to see SCAC players getting national recognition.

Hunter Owen also is tied to lead the nation in RBI's per game, so congrats to him as well.

What are people's All-SCAC selections at this point, I know Flanagan was named the SCAC pitcher of the year last year, what are the odds he repeats?  He seems to be the frontrunner at this point to do just that.  There isnt any pitcher from Sewanee that can be named All-SCAC in my mind, but there are a few hitters who hit very well and should get some looks.

What is the potential that anyone from the SCAC gets drafted this year?  I know Owen has put up some great numbers, but have not seem him play all that much, and I know Flanagan again has put up great numbers and being such a huge lefty surely cant hurt him.  Vera is also certainly having a great year.  What does everyone think?

Well Sewanee has tanked, so thats never any good...but on a side note,

I dont know what you are talking about with the Rhodes coach putting in pitchers simply to get wins for someone, I looked at the game reports on the SCAC site, Flanagan has had 9 starts, and won them all to get his 10-0 record, one instance is hardly some case of multiple times as you point out...Holt has 2 cases of this it appears, which means he has won 6 of his 7 starts, still very good.

As for Sewanee, it looks like our big win over DePauw is what will will Rhodes the East, it will be nice to see a team from the East make some noise in the SCAC tournament and hopefully regionals.  Looking at the way Rhodes really turned it around makes me hope that we here at Sewanee can do the same and that good things are in store for the baseball program here.

I think that Rhodes will win the SCAC this year.  I predict that it will come down to Millsaps and Rhodes, and that Rhodes, behind Flanagan and Holt, and their very tough lineup will be able to overcome Millsaps in this series.  (As they did before earlier this year)

In response to the big games that Rhodes has won on their schedule, all of those games were games that Flanagan pitched in, which gives Rhodes a big advantage in my opinion, but I would like to point out that in the conference they swept 3 of the 4 weekends and split the other.  Winning 4 games a weekend 3 times is tough to do regardless of who you are playing, and they should get some credit for that. (I think).

This week will be big for Rhodes playing Wash U and Emory in 3 games as both of these are ranked highly, if Rhodes wins 2 of these, then they should get a ranking.
