Retagent re: The Vikings;

Yes, jackson has good stats the last few games, but even his win was a nail biter against second stringers.  So he may have all the athleticism in the world but I don't think he has the presence of a leader. He is surrounded by great talent but opponents don't fear him. When he is in fans and other teams believe the Vikings are very beatable. I think they are percieved as less beatable with Gus behind center.  Unfair?  Oh well.

(PS - 3 and a half hours until mid-night in Oz. Dunno if I'll make it until midnight.)
I have bounced back and forth on Jackson.  The two good things I have seen recently are his arm strength and accuracy on mid-range passes.  The arm strength was always there but the accuracy seems improved.  What I'm not clear on yet is how well he is seeing the field and his anticipation.  Both of these can improve with time and hard-work.  So, right now I'm a slightly positive on his future.  I would give him another year before bailing out.

Just something to point out. I believe that 8 out of the 10 Vikes wins this year have come with Gus at the helm. Is this correct?

That being said I have the utmost confidence in the Vikings and the Purple Faithful to get it done on Sunday afternoon. Go Vikes!

So I was just reading a column on ESPN about DI basketball and "guarantee" games, where big time DI schools pay $80,000 plus travel expenses to small DI schools, to fill schedules and ensure wins.
How much does SJU pay non-conference schools to come play in Collegeville?
Does this sort of thing happen in DIII football, because I know it happens in DIII hoops.

As I have stated over here previously, I would love to see a home/home series between SJU and Mount.  I have heard from you guys on all those occasions that Gags would never agree to play Mount in the regular season.  I think even the man himself said pretty much the same thing recently.  So.....Mount has SJF next year, and at this time has no one scheduled yet for opening day 2010/2011.

It would be great to watch a couple of SJU and MU games. It could also be used as a measuring stick for MIAC teams. MU obviously has great talent as BU can attest to.
I also agree with Warhawk, the best was to understand what championship caliber is would be for anyone to experience it first hand, even if it means taking a few beat downs before handing them out later.

I have been studying the playoff outcomes to date and I am wondering if anyone else is amazed at how poorly the NCAA selection group got the seedings this year.  The four regional finals consist of the following:

East 1 vs 3
North 5 vs 7
West 5 vs 7
South 2 vs 5

I realize upsets are part of every season, but it would appear that the committee got fixated on "undefeated teams" (albeit from some weak conferences) in the seeding process.  Kudos to those teams that did not let a poor seeding impact their game (Whitewater #4 in the country, but seeded #5 in the West.....wtf).

In the future maybe strength of conference, playoff history and some other qualitative measures can be used to properly seed the regions.  They also need to address their chronic habit of being cheap with travel....#1 playing #2 in the West and #2 playing #3 in the South.  If you are going to seed the regions, play the seedings (but get them right); if not pick 8 teams per region and begin to pull the pairings out of a hat.

Doesn't the committee switch around who plays who due to travel and distance?

I listened to Brown when he applied for the Auggie job a few years back. He seems like a knowledgeable guy. Good candidate.

Jordan Berg a Gagliardi finalist?
What is this?  An award for immobile quarterbacks that throw a lot of interceptions?

As I said earlier that I would comment on this portion - Jordan tore his PCL and played on it.  One of the key reasons that he was so immoble! Now, I will stand on my soap box and proclaim that my 40 time was faster than his my last year at Augsbugs (and trust me, mine was no where in the 'fast' realm!) and as such, I do agree that Jordan wasn't the fastest and most mobile QB. However, I don't think his extreme lack of mobility this year was all his doing. The knee brace he had to wear greatly compromised his ability to use his leg, and, I did notice a lack of velocity in his ball this year due to the right leg not being fully normal!

I'm glad to see him up for the Gagliardi award. Jordan is a great student and a good guy off the field. His on-field accomplishments were wonderful, but the Gagliardi award is supposed to highlight all what is meant by D3 football - someone who works hard and succeeds not only on the football field!

I'm a little surprised by the lack of commentary on the board with Royce's conference MVP selection. I thought that there might be a bit of argument from some of the Knight fans on this board.

Yeah Helfling had a shot at it. I think Roy's opportunity to play both sides of the ball helped him out.

So Wartburg seems to be looking like the team that lost to Auggie, not the one that beat Point.

When Wartburg played Auggie I didn't think they were a high caliber playoff team, but I didn't think Bethel was last year either. Teams get hot at the right time. Thats what D III football is all about.

Seems as though the MIAC is behind everyone else when it comes to posting regular season honors and awards.

Does anyone know when the honors and awards are being announced?

Any thoughts on the MIAC players of the year?
