Quote from: Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan) on March 05, 2026, 12:32:21 PMNeither the SCIAC nor the NWC would ever consider UCSC.  It doesn't make sense for either of them.

They can all schedule UCSC as they see fit without being required to do so.

This. UCSC is unlike any of the SCIAC schools in two important ways: 1) it's a state school, and the SCIAC consists of private schools; and 2) it's in northern California, and, as the name of the conference indicates, the SCIAC is is in southern California. The Banana Slugs are a five-hour drive away from the nearest SCIAC campus.

The NWC is the same in both respects, except that the distances are even further between UCSC and the Oregon- and Washington-based NWC schools.

So it looks like they either can go D2/NAIA to cut travel budgets but add scholarships, or stay in C2C and struggle to compete with the Mary Washingtons, Christopher Newports, and Salisburys, all while adding further strain on the overall school budget for possible travel expenses. The SCIAC would be most logical for them, since the LA area is 300 miles away, but I recognize your point.

The UCSC student body passed an additional fee on themselves a few years back to keep athletics.

They could probably raise a chunk of athletics money just by aggressively marketing Banana Slugs merch.

What the D1 committee does is irrelevant. The D3 bracket is constructed differently by design. It is abundantly clear you do not like this, but your dislike does not change the systemically different realities, even if you continue to ignore them.

This year it is the NESCAC. As ziggy alluded to above, Hope/Calvin have been placed in the same pod on multiple occasions. WIAC teams are regularly bracketed to meet each other sooner than they would like. And you will certainly get no sympathy from our friends in Texas. The UAA avoids this not out of preference towards them but because of geography.

Yes. Yes you did.  :)

Trine plays Shenandoah at Denison, with Southern Virginia also in the quad.
#5
Hope plays at UW-La Crosse.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Aurora are the other two teams in the quad.

Quote from: oldknight on November 29, 2025, 08:18:54 AMThe only thing to add is the great job Calvin defenders did on Heidelberg's Markell Johnson-Nichols, who came into the game shooting 76.9% from 3 point range. Calvin defenders limited the sharpshooter from Reynoldsburg Ohio to a mere 66.7% night from the arc, and the young man's 3-point average has now plummeted to 75% (12-16) shooting this season. Markell's 3-point shooting career started slow as the Heidelberg junior is now shooting 52.9% from the arc, going 39-74 the last 3 seasons

Quote from: monsoon on November 14, 2025, 01:02:42 PMHave we figured out yet what the tie-breaker scenario is if Adrian-Alma-Hope all finish 6-1 in the league, with head-to-head also equal?

Of course, Alma beating Adrian renders it moot with Alma owning the head-to-head over Hope. Thankful for the expanded field... in years prior that loss would have knocked Hope out, which would really have been a raw deal.

Has the MIAA had a player from Maine before, or will Trevon Thomas be the first?

Great hire for Trine. Welcome back to the MIAA, Jon.

Quote from: Dutchfan on November 08, 2024, 07:45:40 PMWhy is the Hope/Calvin game not being played at Grand Valley?

Lubbers stadium seats 36,000, is conveniently located, and is not being used tomorrow.

It was a Calvin home game; I assume they wanted to play it in their home stadium.

Only a true Dutchman can spell Petroelje correctly but have a typo in Hudsonville. 🙂
