Quote from: faunch on May 26, 2026, 10:46:07 PMNot sure if there's an air conditioning contest but we turned ours on today at approximately 6:30 pm. Hot and sticky might be fun for some things but sleeping isn't one of them.

I had to turn mine on in March.  We had some days in the 90s which pushed the temp inside to the mid 80s.  It was brutal!  Just got my electric bill for May which wasn't terrible in terms of heat, but still over $250.  An electric bill in the summer can easily hit $500+ for a 2500 square foot home.  It flat out sucks.  I'll start reffing basketball in some gyms in a few weeks.  They tell me the gyms have A/C, but I am not sure it ever gets used.  I've been known to walk outside to cool off.  I leave the heat off for longer than most in the area.  Usually the house has to sit around 60 before I turn it on.

What's everyone's favorite thing to hunt?  Love me some dove hunting.  High limits with lots of shooting.  If it flies and dies I am in.  Deer hunting is nice, but in Texas it's not the most sporting of activities in my opinion.  Hoping to do some hog/predator hunting with the thermal scope soon.

30 some years ago i officiated basketball and reffed some summer high school ball up in the north metro. Former Bethel coach George Palke ran a league and games were played at Centennial schools. There were nights it was so hot and humid the gym floor would literally get wet from the condensation and players struggled to keep their footing. It seemed downright dangerous and I came closed to ending games out of concern for injury...and there was big old George with no plan to dry off the floor.

Also I grew up in rural Minnesota and I don't hunt. Took a gun training class when i was 11-13ish...even earned my safety patch and decided that guns and hunting are something I didn't want to do.

Umpiring a softball double header tonight, 3 on Saturday morning and 3 on Sunday morning. Glad I turned the AC on.

I think you're looking at it through the lens of how we would've understood it.  Money in college sports is more and more normalized, and I'm guessing athletes today wouldn't be all that shocked. Sure, we wish D3 would remain a bastion of purity, but there will certainly be cases where money leaks in stuff like this will happen.

Or how D3 was supposed to be. Honestly I'm getting tired of just about every level of sports. The other day I saw a video of like an 11 year old doing a commitment ceremony for AAU basketball.

Quote from: faunch on March 30, 2026, 09:03:27 AMWonder how the other guy feel about playing with guys getting $50K each and the rest of you are getting bupkis.

They probably feel like those guys worked their butts off to be that good and they are happy to have them on their team.

It's like looking at the student next to you getting a full scholarship because they worked hard in high school and another student is carrying a student loan but still got accepted.

Better opportunities, physical attributes, sure. But effort in all ways comes into play.

Some people just plain work harder than others and get compensated more.

Nope...not a MIAC school.
If I recall the dad I know was told that the alum is ponying up about $300K....that should be enough to build one really good line and get a goalie. Wonder how the other guy feel about playing with guys getting $50K each and the rest of you are getting bupkis.

It is a fundraiser, but $250 is kind of steep.

Isn't it kind of ironic that Austin Murphy is the guest at a $250 a seat SJU fundraiser. If I recall from his book  he was tired of what had become of big time sports and drawn to SJU because of the simple way the Johnnies did things. It's crazy how things have changed in the last 20 or so years...If teams are doing nation wide recruiting and using NIL and the portal they won't be successful in D3.

I'd like someone to point out where exactly I was complaining in this post? I was merely attempting to point out how D3 athletics, specifically football, has changed in the last 20-25 years. Austin Murphy came to SJU because of how John did things. There weren't fly in recruiting visits and SJU alums weren't hosting $250 a plate dinners to woo D1 transfers to Collegeville with the promise of cash in their pocket (I don't know for certain that SJU players have pocketed NLI $).
I didn't know John Gagliardi personally, I probably had two, maybe three conversations with him over my years at SJU. From what I've heard and been told about him it's a good bet that he would not have been a fan of the current landscape of D3 football.

So I guess making an observation is akin to airing grievances (Yes I know that Festivus is in December)? Maybe this December one of those grievances won't be another Johnnie playoff loss.

I was merely attempting to point out how D3 athletics, specifically football, has changed in the last 20-25 years. Austin Murphy came to SJU and wrote a book because of how John and the Johnnies did things. There weren't any whistles and he was "Winning with nos. It's was about he purity and simplicity of D3 football.
There weren't recruits flying into visit and SJU alums weren't hosting $250 a plate dinners to woo D1 transfers to Collegeville with the promise of cash in their pocket (I don't know for certain that SJU players have pocketed NLI $ but I'm guessing there has been and will be).

I think a fair number of us that follow D3 sports do so because it's one of the last vestiges of unadulterated college sports. Yes it's still "non-scholarship" but let's not fool ourselves...with NLI we seem to be trying to close the barn door after the cows are already out of the barn.
And it isn't just football.
A coworker's kid was offered about $50K and has "signed" to play D3 hockey for a team that had 6 wins this season.
Apparently a wealthy alum is big puck fan and is has the funds to try an build up the program.

Quote from: faunch on February 26, 2026, 08:20:47 PMAgreed...I could probably be convinced to pay $100 for conference football if it got CSS to improve their ****-y production.
Video production or on-field production?  :o

Not sure which might happen first? Maybe they're intentionally keeping the video production so poor to keep people from seeing how bad the on-field performance is.
I'm guessing SJU is not terribly interested in having conference wide PPV for football as it might cost them some revenue.
I would really love to know how much revenue SJU garners from the PPV football webcasts.

Quote from: DuffMan on February 26, 2026, 04:14:23 PMI get that you want it to be free, Faunch, but it costs money to produce these streams.  Do you think the schools should just eat the cost?  How much would it actually cost you to go to the game?

I'm not saying that I like having to pay, but if the option is paying for a decent broadcast vs. watching a CSS Football stream, I'll gladly pay the $10-$15.

It kind of sucks that the streams for hoops and hockey are free all season and then they charge for the playoffs. I'm not that invested in this season's SJU hoops team to fork out the $$$ to stream it.
I wonder how much money they'll actually make of the basketball and hockey playoffs.
Agreed...I could probably be convinced to pay $100 for conference football if it got CSS to improve their ****-y production.

This MIAC charging PPV for conference basketball playoffs....also women's basketball, and men's and women's hockey playoff streams are also PPV.  Johnnies and Bennies have teams in 3 out of 4 of the playoff tournaments.

$10 per game...$25 for all games.
Thoughts?
