QuoteNAPERVILLE, Ill. – Augustana's Robert Wood, along with North Central's Joey Michals and Shane Dierking were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week Monday.

Wood, a senior running back from Loves Park, Ill., and Rockford Boylan High School, rushed for a career-high 181 yards on 30 carries during the Vikings' 20-17 win over Illinois Wesleyan in the season finale for both teams on Saturday. Wood recorded the highest rushing total by an Augustana running back since Mike Guzman gained 220 yards against Central of Iowa in the opening game of the 2005 season. The victory allowed the Vikings to finish the season 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW. It was the 31st winning season in the last 32 years for Augustana. Wood ended the year with 698 yards rushing on 154 attempts with seven touchdowns. He is a Pre-Medicine (Biology) major.

Michals, a sophomore linebacker from Frankfort, Ill., and Providence Catholic High School, tallied a career high 13 tackles, including four solo as the team's middle linebacker, during North Central's 61-7 victory over North Park on Saturday. The win clinched the Cardinals the outright CCIW title. Michals is an English-Literature major.

Dierking, a freshman return specialist from Wheaton, Ill., and Wheaton-Warrenville South High School, ran a punt back 78 yards for a touchdown just before halftime of the Cardinals' victory over North Park. The punt return was the second longest in school history. Dierking also returned the opening kickoff 50 yards to set up North Central's offense with a short field on its first possession. He is a Business major.

This is my first post and i was just wondering if anyone knows how the POW are chosen because looking through all the statistics i am confused as to some of the picks for POW. For example, this weeks defensive player of the week had 13 tackles (only 4 of them solo) and earned the DPOW honors, and i noticed that a few other players in the conference had statistically better performances?

CCRM Player...or CCRM Fan,

Welcome to the board.

I don't know, I think 13 tackles (solo or not) is pretty good. Consider the best defensive players in the league are averaging about 9-10 tackles a game. If you are "Jonesing" (no pun intended) for your boy Brian Hipchen, who had 3 INT vs Elmhurst, I may actually agree with you as holding Elmhurst to 6 points was the surprise of the weekend (at least for me, even though its what Mr Ypsi predicted).

Thanks for the warm welcome USee. I agree 13 tackles is pretty good, I am in no way trying to take the fact that Mr. Michals had a statistically solid game but, as you have indicated (being that I'm a Carthage fan) I do feel that Mr. Hipchen got the short end of the stick here. Again as you pointed out he had 3 INT, but he also had 9 tackles (7 solo) (and i know, i know a tackle is a tackle whether it is solo or not) and a pass break up. Still leaves me curious who or what decides POW....?

I would also like to throw in a personal opinion here.....Tackles end plays, turnovers end drives.

Player of the Week has always confused me a bit.  Not that those who win on a week to week basis aren't worthy, but often there is another choice that seems more obvious.  I'm pretty sure that the strength of the opponent makes a difference, along with whether or not your team wins (not many POW from teams that lost).

For instance there was a week that Jordan Roberts had 280 yards passing, 3 TD's, plus 115 yards rushing and 1 TD, yet he wasn't the offensive player of the week.

I'd need to go back to the CCIW site to see who won, but I recall it was someone who had a very, very solid game against one of the top teams.

I've gotten to the point that I focus solely recognizing those who won it and not who I think should have.  Everyone who wins it clearly had a significant impact on their team winning the game and thus is very deserving of the recognition.

Thanks for the input Mugsy, but if strength of opponent is a factor in this......didn't NCC play North Park this week? And they got two of the three POW honors?
