Big coaching update in MWC: After 23 seasons as Ripon College Head Women's Basketball Coach, Julie Johnson will step down from her role to become full-time Athletic Director. There should be some pretty good young coaches applying for this job. And with Julie most likely leading the hiring committee, she will choose her successor well.
And then a not so surprising update: Tara Carr has resigned as the head women's basketball coach at Lawrence University. The new coach will be the sixth women's basketball head coach at Lawrence in eight seasons. Yikes. With the LU AD leading the hiring committee, the next coach will most likely be anther dud. Sad to see LU athletics dept struggle so much with this.

What are everyone's thoughts on RF? Are they legit? They are 9-0 overall, 3-0 in conference. So far they've crushed Stout, Oshkosh and Platteville. Non of those are conference contenders, but Oshkosh was having a good year up until the RF game. I think their January schedule will show their true colors, when they play Point, WW, Lax and EC all in a two week span.
Coach Cindy has never finished higher than 3rd. Is this going to be her year?

Lawrence picks up a win. From their website:
"The victory snapped a 31-game winless streak for the Vikings. It was Lawrence's first victory since an 88-68 victory at Silver Lake College on Feb. 15, 2010. It also marked Lawrence's first Midwest Conference victory since a 62-53 victory over Knox on Jan. 19, 2008. Lawrence had gone 62 league games without a victory."
Yikes I didn't realize how long it's been for Lawrence to get a win in conference. And it's not like it's that strong of a conference to begin with. The box score looked ugly. 32 TOs for Knox and 39 for Lawrence. When's the last time you saw a team with 39 TOs win a ball game??
I didn't see the game, but judging from the box score it looks like Knox might be playing a Grinnell-style system. There's 14 players with nearly equal playing time. And they put up 37 three pointers. Wow.

Sorry for trying to start a discussion. Didn't realize this board was so sensitive.

Here's a hoops-related coaching update on Alverno:
http://northernac.org/sports/wbkb/2011-12/releases/20110823wzmp90
The Alverno staff also features former Badger Men's player Latrell Fleming.
And... your point? In my opinion, the staff features far more knowledgable coaches than Fleming, who only played a year or two at Wisc on the mens side. What about the ex womens college players on staff? Or Kluth? All great additions to the program. Fleming does lots of AAU, but that's a whole different animal compared the tasks of a college basketball coach. Grades, recruiting, scouting, etc.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the UWO-Lawrence score from Tuesday night: Lawrence 56 UW-Oshkosh 65. Is UWO that bad that they can't pull away from a program that's won 3 games in 3 years? Lawrence lost to Marian by 30 last night. Looks like UWO will be competing with UW Sup for last place.
UWW's win over Carroll was impressive. I think Carroll averages almost 80 points a game in conference, not that that's saying much in the MWC though. But holding a team 20 points under their average is tough.

PRF2009A, you are correct about last season. They did over-achieve when they went to the Tournament. However I still stand by my comments that they are in general the most over-rated program in the WIAC. Hoop junkie brings up a really good point that there are schools with a lot less resources than LAX has, yet they are more successful.

No Surprise with St. Norb on top again. They should be able to run the table and go 18-0. I don't see anyone coming close to upsetting them, except possibly for Monmouth. They've got that confusing chaotic 3/4 court zone trap. Very fun to watch when it's clicking, and very difficult to beat.
Ripon gets 1 first place vote? That's random. They're still a year or two away from really competing for 1st place. They could slip into the conference tournament though, in place of Carroll.
And speaking of Carroll, are they ever going to shore up their defense? They could be a contender if they ever learned to play disciplined team defense. The offense is always there for them, but their defense is sloppy.

Here are the official predictions from the SID's, seems to me like they have LAX pretty high for a team losing all 5 starters:
2011-12 Preseason Predictions--Voted on by WIAC Sports Information Directors
2010-11 Record
1. UW-Stevens Point (6) 27-3 overall, 16-0 WIAC
2. UW-Whitewater (2) 21-7, 12-4
3. UW-River Falls (1) 16-11, 7-9
4. UW-Eau Claire 15-11, 9-7
5. UW-La Crosse 20-8, 12-4
6. UW-Stout 10-15, 5-11
7. UW-Oshkosh 12-14, 7-9
8. UW-Superior 8-17, 2-14
9. UW-Platteville 6-19, 2-14
( )--First-Place Votes
Isn't LAX always overrated in the preseason polls? Most overrated team in the WIAC year in and year out. Never a contender, even when they should be.
UWSP is going to go 16-0 again. And another deep run into the NCAA Tournament.
Good to see UW Sup isn't picked last. Hopefully they keep improving. They've got a good coach up there.
