Pre season comments...

Whittier, nice to see they have hire a coach with more local ties, BTW they are expecting over 1000 students, since their great experiment, note short signing linemen

Chapman,  I dont expect much of a drop off...Coach O is a good guy...

UR, it's going to come down to how well the O line plays...everyone around UR football knows it...Its very tough to find good ones.  OB is back practicing, I expect him to run less. Quicker plays.

I had an interesting conversation with a non U of R coach. This league as I have been harping when it comes down to who has the best O line in league. Its no secret among the coaches. Hence Coach White at Whittier can not even tell you what offence he will be running. CMS is winning the arms race, facility, national recruiting and very low cost to attend which makes it just as enticing as a some 1AA school. If CMS is not in the top of the league in every sport, the HC should be fired given the fact above. Pomona not far behind given their aid too.

Some of those weight lifting max's on the board are from the 90's...maybe better supplements back in the day?

RBF and I are 1000% correct on this issue, what has happened to Football is the same thing going on in America. This is why I have fallen in love with MMA. I am not against the helmet and head injuries rules and progress btw, so I am not an old man yelling at clouds.

I am not saying kids are not bigger, stronger, faster, trained......just many that play today would not have the heart and moxie to play.

When I played if you were hurt you avoided the trainer and never admitted an issue, so you were not taken out. Heck my own son was injured in HS and coaches never knew it or if they did looked the other way knowing me... (twisted abdomen muscle) . It was not life or death, took him to doctor and PT after practice. Different world and not all better. He did not miss...it just hurt, suck it up buttercup.

RBF

You are correct, in order to play 20 plus years ago you had to be tougher than today's players. Its not their fault but the new rules make one play soft. The game was may more rugged and violent back in the day, crack backs were legal, leg whips were legal, could hit QBs if within two steps after ball is gone, could hit WR anytime as long as the ball was not in the air, we would hit runners one step out of bounds, we used our helmets as a weapon, we played with inferior equipment compared to today, up until my senior year in HS we did not get water breaks and did three a days (could you imagine the helicopter parents today) , we ran wedges and wedge blockers on kick off, we could hurdle the pile of FG block, we could can the center on field goals, and punts.
About half the kids I see playing HS Football would wilt ...if they were subject this short list above.

Lastly when laid someone out we did not flex or say to the crowd look at me.

Took a look at the pre-season schedules.

Chapman, has the toughest with Hardin Simmons (home)  and LF , any word on the coach
UR, I would put second with GFU and WW

The rest are very weak, LV has just one game and a scrimmage, CLU, PP and CMS ...I guess CMS in third...

Quote from: Pat Coleman on July 02, 2025, 03:21:18 PMFinlandia has been closed for a while.
The number of days of practice before depends on when the first day of classes is and is not universally 23 days before.
"Under Maynard" what you describe is what the rules allowed and is basically how all D-III schools operated until the member schools voted in rules that were more appropriate for student-athlete well-being.

Pat, thanks kinda...

Its dead as heck...

Football games start 9-4, D3 can start practices 23 days before. Under Maynard the kids were lucky to get 2 days off.

Fun Facts, 80% of the schools are private, sizes range from 400 to 38,000 kids...Finladia being at the 400+

This will be the 53rd season for D3

Thanks RB...post on Whittier

Notice the list of players, just one O-linemen, and 5 Qb's. Coach White can be the greatest coach but no big boys, no run game...they will struggle. The best running team will win the SCIAC again. I wonder if coach White is going to do a Mike Maynard and convert the QB's to other positions, since most QB's today are great athletes. UR has a former QB that will be a really good safety this season. I expect good things from him.

Good luck coach White.

That Guy

I think these camps still are a source of income, not like a D3 coach are not starving. Plus its really good exposure for UR with So Cal kids. Amazing how much it has grown.

I think the new OC will help UR, I think you will see a deeper play calling list and game plans should improve.
All that said it comes down to Jimmy's and Joe's, and not trying to be a downer, but the O linemen issue will always an issue in the SCIAC...best O line wins league...

I have heard the same, if APU wanted in the SCIAC...they need to play football. I can't verify if true.
Obviously admin's commitment is key for any school, but APU has some real potential given its size, enrollment criteria, location, and facilities/programs.

Glad the league will be back to 8 teams, help keep travel cost down overall.

Many AP former athletes at APU are not happy about this hire. There were past APU alums that are coaching that got passed up. APU has a history of producing coaches. Its crazy to me, I had a conversation with the APU president 11 years ago and they were contemplating going D1, hence the Felix Center etc.

Hazzben, they should have hired someone that knows So Cal, that is where over 50% of his players will come from and recruiting Oregon, Washington and Arizona kids are ones mainly looking to get out to the weather, aka UR's move. I am not saying the guy can't coach, but it may take a year or two more to get where he wants to be. Lastly when you crap on Alum's and the core, you run the risk of financial support...hence UR, ask Jeff Martinez.

Good Man, always liked coach Owens. Sad to see him leave, given the timing (right after spring ball and recruiting) I hope his health is well.

Spring Ball in D3 is boring, I did hear you can wear shoulder pads and helmets for spring ball, I don't know the  restrictions, but if JC football in CA can wear full pads in spring, D3 should push for it just from a perception to recruits.

Just found this team interesting, when Arizona decided to eliminate JC football, this private team was formed.
The came to the southland and played JV games against UR and LV (got boat raced by both) A few UR kids from the JV game got more varsity reps due to their performance. I wish the SCIAC had a true JV league.

Its spring ball for UR, I think D3 should have the option to go full pads, sure limit hitting, hours etc if you want but hitting trash cans is stupid. Let each league vote on it, players would get so much more out of it. It would only help D3 ball, shorten it to 5 days in shorts and 10 days in pads...Basketball, baseball, etc can do what they want to do but FB is limited.  Imagine if water polo could not go in the water in their off season. I need some DEI football too.
