Quote from: GoldandBlueBU on May 06, 2025, 03:15:02 PMInteresting stuff for off-season reading - thanks!

So bethel really shot themselves in the foot by not sweeping St. Mary's in the last baseball set of games - as I'm pretty sure that would have made them regular season champs - as they'd have been tied with Gustavus on record - but swept them in the 2 game set?

It's an extra point left on the table for sure. But, like in any game, the first quarter matters just as much for the final score as the fourth quarter. I'm sure you could look back at the season and say "man, the basketball performance really killed us."

Or, more importantly for Bethel, not having a swimming and diving program really handicaps them. That's at least a couple of points left on the table.

I'd be surprised if Bethel ever added swimming and diving. It looks like the basketball team's struggles this year hurt the most.

Quote from: BiggieSmalls on April 21, 2025, 10:58:49 PMWonder what changed for him to just be passing through

Good question.  He came in Jan, left in April?  Maybe someone else is obviously going to win the starting job.  Or maybe a scholarship program reached out and offered him a starting spot.

EDIT:

I noticed in this article (https://www.stcloudlive.com/sports/college/johnnies-bringing-in-division-i-transfer-qb-beau-bush-from-usd) announcing his transfer to SJU that post his trip to Collegeville in the morning, he called up UST and cancelled his visit with them scheduled for that same afternoon.  Any idea on where he's going?  St Glenn didn't stay in his ear, did he?

Interesting article. In high school, didn't like sitting behind head coach's son so he transferred. Threw the Pella Christian coach under the bus who apparently suggested he look at D line. Nothing wrong with a coach suggesting that nor with a player believing in himself as a QB. Went to USD, sits behind good QB's and doesn't want to burn more time. Transfers to SJU ober winter to compete this spring and says he's not afraid to compete. Subsequently goes back into portal after spring looking for a new school. He may burn his whole career in the transfer portal looking for a fit.

Regardless, good luck to that young man. Hope he finds what he's looking for.

Quote from: faunch on April 15, 2025, 07:09:40 PMI feel like I'm one of the only Johnnies that never really knew Fr. Don. I feel like I maybe had a brief chat with him once...my loss for not having any personal Fr. Don anecdotes.

On another note...SJU released their 2025 schedule. The SOS takes a hit with week two non-conference game hosting UMN-Morris. Might be good to not have top ranked opponent as the Johnnies will be breaking in a new QB. The Johnnies actually are all time .500 vs the Cougars (2-2-1).

https://gojohnnies.com/news/2025/4/15/old-foes-return-for-sju-in-2025-football-schedule.aspx

Calling my shot, Johnnies will be 3-2-1 all time. 😉

Quote from: sjujohnnie on January 06, 2025, 11:09:32 AMLooking ahead to the fall, how does anyone see St John's looking? Looks like we have two open dates yet to be filled with non-conference opponents. Obviously the toughest test of the conference slate will be traveling to Arden Hills to face Bethel in the third conference tilt of the season. How different will our squad (& theirs) look? We have a transfer QB from USD that will competing to fill some big shoes. Can we build on this season or do we take a step back?

Bethel loses a lot to graduation...most of the offensive production (Kidder, Niewald, Ellingson).  Obviously they have Drews - so hopefully there are some younger receivers who were anxiously waiting for the older guys graduate.

Defense loses a lot too - obviously Jung, Nate Farm, but also Dewall, and Reese Pantilla on the d-line.  Lots of holes to fill!

I thought Coach Mac said Dewall could technically get another year due to injury earlier in his career. He may want to just graduate and move on though as Mac said he was a newlywed.

Would have been interesting to see how Bethel or Johnnies would have competed against NCC.

Quote from: sfury on December 17, 2024, 02:59:25 PMJung enters the portal. Figure big bucks are coming his way at a bigger school.

****!!!!!!!

Good for him, but man this stinks. I continue to absolutely detest the portal...detest it.

Hate to see him go - happy for him though.  If I were in his shoes, it would be difficult to not want to play as high as I could.

I dislike the impact of NIL more than I dislike the portal - I realize they're linked.  I don't mind the portal in that I think it's not reasonable to hold a kid to a decision that they made at 17 or 18 (heck maybe 16), when circumstances can change a lot by the time they're 20 - I like that there is some mobility for players - since there is plenty of mobility for coaches.

Looks like Jung has offers from Iowa State and Wisconsin now. Good for that guy.

So in this case, the regular season and conference championship game do matter. Usually hear it the other way.

@Pat Is the 2025 season the first year when there should not be any Covid year eligibility remaining on teams?

Curious if this is now "back to normal" of 5 years to play 4 or the most likely in D3 of 4 to play 4.

Quote from: BiggieSmalls on December 14, 2024, 02:56:14 PMI believe the hold was on the RB who was helping with the RT. He grabbed jersey of DE. Probably didn't need to as that DE was not likely to make a tackle on QB by his release.
I thought they called it on the tackle before the RB engaged. But who knows.

Agreed. I didn't see the RT hold, but the RB who was helping the RT did tug the jersey of DE.
