How about about a preview for Wooster.  Its usually posted long before now.  We're under a month Hugh!

Let's get with it!  ;)

Not sure if you guys have see this but OSU took a trip to Kenyon to practice this week.  That it was relevant for this board since its Kenyon.

I believe Coach Tressel had Kenyon swim coach talk to the team briefly.  For you Wabash guys whether you like OSU or not Jt is big on D3 athletics.  His dad was Lee Tressel, longtime coach at BW and Jim was a QB there under him.

I'm late to the game on this but why is Barry Craddock(sp) no longer the coach at Denison??  Any info??

I do not know why he is no longer at Denison, but I can tell you he's now back at Wooster.  (You probably knew that.)

I hope these quotes transferred over.  I'm still a rookie when it comes to this message board stuff.
Craddock was forced out by the Denison Administration over a personal matter that I do not feel is appropriate to mention publically on this board.  The issue occured in 2006 or early '07 (before the season) and Craddock remained as coach of the Big Red through all of last season despite the occurence.  My sources tell me a disgruntled player and his parent then took the matter to the Dension Admin. and the force out resulted.  A sad situation if the story is indeed fact.  Craddock is very much respected as a coach by this particular poster and I hope he gets another shot as a head coach next season or even finds work at a higher level.  What he accomplished at Denison is what every lower-middle range program in the midwest would love to see happen to their program.

I've been sitting on this information for several months out of respect to Coach Craddock and my source hoping that the curiosity would go away but the interested baseball fans that you all are have brought the question back to topic.  Hopefully enough time has now passed and the issue is not as sensitive now as last fall.

I thought it was strange given the success he had.  I knew he wouldn't leave a head coaching job at Denison to return to Wooster unless there was something fishy going on.

I just wanted to know if he left on his terms or the schools.  By the sounds of your post it was the schools.

I would be interested to know why though???  But then again there are laws about started rumors on the message boards....... ;) ;)

To those that were at/listening to the Wit-Woo game are you sure the football team showed up?

I noticed that both soccer teams play at Witt tonight and thought they might have told the football team to take the day off and stay back in Woo since they were already making the trip.  The 1:00 tilt would be a good warm-up for them to get the juices flowing.   ???  :-\

38-0 in the 1st quarter.....YIKES!!!

Seinfeld, ScotLass, Nike, Lancer98, Chilly,etc..

I've posed this question before to some of my Woo football brethren of the Barnes/Schmitz eras, but for fear of sounding asinine, here it goes - Was Sutton the worst thing that could have happened to Wooster for the LONG-TERM health of the program?

What I'm inferring is simple - while Sutton was the greatest player in Wooster histroy (no question about it), did his play mask some serious programatic issues that are coming to a head now?  For example, did he mask an ineffective offensive scheme, did he mask sub-par recruiting classes, did he mask lack of player motivation, did he mask internal issues, or did he create a mis-guided self-belief within the program that the success enjoyed by Wooster during his playing years were the result of superior coaching, recruiting, preparation etc... rather than a once in a lifetime player?

I dont' know the answers to these questions either and my gut tells me they are simply going through a rough season.  However, it is frustrating watching other conference and non-conference peers re-load and enjoy continued success year after year while Wooster rides the proverbial roller-coaster.

Thoughts?

Also, one more thing that was mentioned to me a few weeks back that I found interesting - does anybody think is strange that all but two of the current Wooster assistant coach's played under Schmitz?  Is this common in other NCAC or DIII schools?  Somebody pointed this out to me as a negative, but I'm not sure what to think about it.

Some great and interesting points WooScot.  A few thoughts:

1.)  I think Wooster will always be a middle of the road football school until a number of changes are made.  Not just football changes but changes at the academic and financial aid levels as well.  Not too mention the school's support of the athletic programs as a whole.  (maybe a contributing factor to only being able to retain Wooster graduates as assistants)  It also would help to have some better facilities.  Wooster has built many buildings the past few years.  Where are the athletic facilities?  This should be at the top of the next wave of construction.

2.)  For a few reasons it appears outside coaches are hard to attract.  I suspect a few of those are and are not related to Schmitz.

3.)  Tony Sutton was a great running back but we all know great Wooster backs at have big feet, a soft head, and bum knees.  They need one of those for a turn around.   ;D

Had a friend of a friend tell me at a social event that OWU actually beat OSU back in the late 1800's I believe.

In 1890 OSUand OWU met in the first "official" game for each, OSU won.  Site was not far frm Selby's site, per article this week in the Dispatch.  OWU tied OSU n 1895 and won in 1896 and 1897.  Only non-losses v OSU.  Per OWU media guide.

OWU was the opponent at the dedication game of Ohio Stadium.

BTW Polaris Mall is closer to Delaware than Easton.  Better food at Easton though.
Wooster also had a date with OSU in 1890.  It was OSU's first official "home" game and Wooster beat the Buckeyes to the tune of 64-0!

Here's a link to the story on Wooster's website:

Fighting Scot Football Part of Ohio Historical Marker

I was there for the event .  There was a pretty funny episode of seeing Jim Tressel catch President Hales after Hales almost fell of the stage after talking.  Its a good thing he did  becuase it could have been ugly.

It was a great ceremony with many notable speakers...Jack Park, Tressel, Gene Smith, Karen Holbrook ::) , and Hales.  Gene Smith OSU's current AD ventured Wooster for a rematch but the Woo AD politely declined... :D

1iopen,

Dension is a gem waiting to be found football wise.  The place is as nice as can be and its facilties are second to none in the NCAC. ...This coming from a Wooster grad.  They also have some tradition there with Woody Hayes and Coach Piper.

I don't understand why they have had a hard time having an upper tier program in some of the major sports.  All the pieces seem to be in place there????

Somebody with knowledge shed some light.

It  is possible to be a better college player than another person but a lesser pro prospect.

Just as it is possible to be the better pro prospect AND the better college player at the same time.

Somehow, I think the NFL scouts would know a little more about judging talent than a coach from the NCAC. ::)
In the words of Pat..."Ding ding!!"

Too bad on Rick.  I would have loved to see him stick around for a while.

Can you imagine the jump in competition he would have had to adjust to?  Because of his size he was moved inside to center/guard.

Last year he's blocking the likes of 230 lb DE's from the likes of Kenyon and Oberlin and in training camp he would have been trying to block Ted Washington.  Yee-Ouch!!

Here's to hoping he can continue his career somewhere.

I'll be following his progress.  Hopefully he can make it to training camp and maybe make the practice squad.  That would be the best case scenerio I would think.

Good luck to Rick.

Former Witt player Taver Johnson was named Cornerbacks coach at Ohio State today.  Good to see a fellow D3 player rise in the ranks.  He left the Raiders for the job.
