Quote from: stlawus on September 27, 2025, 04:51:06 PMI might have to start saying it, SLU is looking like it needs a complete reset.  Toshack had a decent 10 year run all things considered, but with part of that being off the back of Durocher's final recruiting class and the program's current trajectory it's getting late early as they say.  A few select players have kept things from spilling over like Sibanda and Mogul who really should be given more flowers in retrospect.  But this is just not going to cut it. Another game where players clearly want to go forward and be creative but have obviously had all of these habits coached out of them to think that their first option should be to go backwards. I know the players like playing for him, but SLU soccer is bigger than any one person.
Durocher last recruiting class really helped Tosh out a lot. They need players who can take on players 1v1 especially on the outside. It seems like they want to do it but stop and pull the ball back to pass it backwards. I have heard that Tosh has turned off some alumni who have referred players to him that could have helped the team.  MLK is perenial powerhouse in NYC that Dede came from that needs be cultivated again. If things don't turn around fast they might not even make the league playoffs and only win maybe one more game. Going from a pk away from league champions to not even making the tournament is very telling.

Quote from: StatesSoccerFan on September 20, 2025, 06:19:55 PMThat was a beat down. I've seen SLU play the last few years and never saw a SLU team not play with any passion like today. To me that's on the players. Especially in a rivalry game vs Hobart.
That's putting it mildly

These guys go on the attack and have numbers up then stop and pass the ball back, letting the defense set up. It is very annoying to watch. They also look like they have lead feet as they trap the ball and it goes 5 yards in front of them.

Nice goal by Hobart but that also sums the current Tosh era.

Quote from: Saint of Old on September 10, 2025, 12:20:16 PMThe most successful captain in Saint History led the team for two seasons.
Both undefeated (39w 0losses 2 ties) en route to an undefeated National Championship.
Was a Defensive player of the year and All American during the programs most dominant era ever.

We decided to  snub him for the Hall of Fame induction  last year while 8 other men got in.

This one action cut the Alumni support in half.

We have gradually cut all pipelines to recruiting and influential alumni.
We have WHITE WASHED a team that was the most diverse in college soccer for 25 years, bringing in some of the best African/Jamaican talent the division had ever seen year after year.
We have changed our playing style from attacking possession/penetration to pass backwards at all times and keep possession in our own final 1/3 waiting to get picked off.
We have decided to only play 13-14 players and hope to not get ran through by aggressive fit players.
Nothing  that is happening to the Saints was done by anyone but Saints.

Our dominance was not put to an end, We decided to end it.

The past 8 or so seasons we have had 2 of the best players in program history (Top 10) in Jethro Dede/ Marvin Sibanda, both African players.
These two men covered many cracks which are mentioned above, but now they are gone and so are the wins this program once took for granted.

Some of us tried to send a warning, first diplomatically, then more forceful, and we were called negative and dinosaurs.

SLU has been around since 1860, the soccer program since 1962.
First 0-4 start since 1962.

2024 (Last Season) was the 25th year of the 22-0-0 National Championship in 1999 and the program decided not to recognize the accomplishment in any way.

When you cut the roots of a tree, the tree dies.

Well said. It is frustrating to see a once proud and established program go down this path. Iunderstand that Tosh wants to do his own path but alumni support and establishing pipelines and continuing them is key to successful programs. I think Tosh has either cut ties with them or doesn't want their input on recruting and it is shame.  I think his ego is getting the best of him.  Maybe losing will get through to him that you can't ignore the alumni or the support.  Even Durocher would cultivate a culture for support among the alumni.  As far as the captain of the most successful team in school history not being in the HOF is just a travesty.  He should be without question and i have my thoughts on why he is not but I will not share them.  Let's just say I believe politics are involved imo.

Could not agree with more.  SLU played very well in the first half and took it to Cortland.  It is very obvious that goals are going to come vey difficult but I hope on I am wrong.  SLU needs a poacher upfront.  As far as Friday's game I don't even know what you would call that becacuse that was ugly.  As far as the losing back to back home games in 92 you have to remember that schedule backthenwas different than it is now.  Back then you played on Friday and Saturday and you did not get 24 hours rest between games.  Friday game was at 4 and Saturday game was at 11 or 1.

Yeah Durocher had some transfers and it started with a UMass transfer in 1990 and then 1992 got another transfer from St.Francis in Chris Rose.  Saint of Old and I have talked about this. Durocher built up some very good pipelines for recruiting and transferring players. I know things have change but sometimes transfers can help both on the field and off

Quote from: stlawus on May 02, 2025, 02:35:09 PMSLU's Henry Brown has transferred to Tufts for next season.

Wow.  Big pickup for Tufts and loss for the Saints.
Y would a Saint who has top scored (basically) his first seasons leave the team for a D3 program?
Not blaming the young man,  but imo things cannot be going right for this to happen.
Disrespecting history eventually impacts the present and future.

Tufts has a reputation of being a very good academic school throughout the nation and their soccer program is top notch. One of the best in the nation and plays in the best league in the nation, NESAC.  SLU use to play in the best league in the nation back in the early 90's.  Maybe he just wantedmore of a challenge both academically and athletically.  Can't blame him for that but he will be missed.

Brown leaving is going to hurt. Might be difficult to replace that production. Hope someone can step up. Having Ogango back will help the team, imo.

Quote from: stlawus on April 23, 2025, 08:00:50 PMSLU is bringing in a pretty big class as another player committed.  That brings the total incoming class so far to 8, and there are a few more players still being targeted.

Updated commit list:

Zach Amato, GK, Brooks School MA.
Verus Kibanga, CAM/CM, Tanzania/UWC East Africa.
Henry Blaxter, F/CAM, Stevenson School, Pebble Beach CA.
Sam Bothwell, CAM/wing, Manchester Essex HS MA
Kenneth Mejia Lopez, LB/LW, Fox Lane HS NY.
Neel Mitra, M, Mamaroneck HS NY
Jack Greenwood, RB/LB, Harwood Union HS VT
Tomas Ronzoni, CAM/LW/RW, Churchill HS MD

I think they graduated 6-7 players and I wonder if other players are not coming back or just not playing any more. It's a big commitment to do any extra curricular activity in college.  As I told a parent who wanted me to talk to her son about playing college sports it the first thing that I will tell him is do you want to do it because you will miss out somethings.

If he does transfer he is going to be missed. I thought he was missed last year but best of luck to him if this does happen.

UVM 2, Marshall 1 OT1

UVM...2024 D1 National Champions
Come from behind too. Scored in the 82 minute then in the first sudden death OT with breakaway goal by going around the goalie. The Marshall defender should have never left his feet but he was tired. No excuses for him but when you are fatigued sometimes you just don't make the best decision. The defender played a great game just made a little mistake. Hats off to both teams. Thought they both played their hearts out. Congrats to UVM for being the National Champs.

Congratulations to Amherst but those have to be the worse pks I have seen from both teams. Congrats to Emmore Kitten for the winning PK.

Quote from: maineman on December 05, 2024, 02:15:12 PMI wonder if the officials selected for the game are from out west?  If so, they may have no idea of the NESCAC style of play.  Would they apt to "let em play" or would they be assessing fouls and cards at an exponential rate compared to what is tolerated in the New England.
Then Amherst needs to adapt. Good teams do.
