Quote from: Flying Dutch Fan on July 02, 2025, 08:25:46 AMSad news out of Adrian - Siena Heights wil be closing at the end of the 25-26 academic year after 105 years. I would assume Adrian College will see some impact from this closure

https://www.sienaheights.edu/siena-heights-university-announces-closure/

What will that impact be?

Always fun to have the conference regular season finale be with Hope.

From Calvin's website:
Calvin University graduate Steve Honderd has been selected for induction into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame. A 1993 Calvin University graduate, Honderd will be inducted into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame on October 31 in Lakeland, Florida. The National Hall of Fame Class marks the ninth class inducted into the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame. The National Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Friday October 31st inside the Branscomb Auditorium on the campus of Florida Southern College.

Honderd remains one of Calvin's most decorated players. A four-year starter from 1989-1993, Honderd is Calvin's all-time leading scorer with 2,469 points. He was a four-time 1st Team All-MIAA selection and a two-time MIAA MVP. He earned NABC Division III All-America honors in 1992 and 1993. He was a part of three MIAA regular season title winning teams as well as Calvin teams that captured the first two MIAA Tournament crowns in 1992 and 1993. As a freshman in 1990, he helped Calvin reach the NCAA III Final Four for the first time in program history, which included a 33-point performance in a second round NCAA III Tournament win over Hope and a 30-point output in a national semifinal loss to DePauw. As a junior in 1992, he led the Calvin men's basketball team to its first Division III National Title including a 62-49 victory over the University of Rochester in the national championship game. He was subsequently named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1992 NCAA III Final Four. As a senior in 1993, he was named the NABC Division III National Player of the Year. In his final regular season game, he scored a Calvin and MIAA single-game record 61 points in a memorable overtime win over Kalamazoo that clinched the outright MIAA regular season title for the Knights.

In 2000, he was named the Division III Player of the Decade by DIII News.

Over the course of his collegiate career, he appeared and started in 119 of a possible 120 games, averaging 20.7 points and 7.4 rebounds a game while connecting on a Calvin career-record 62.8 percent of his field goal attempts.

In the classroom, he was a two-time Academic All-American as an economics major and later received a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. After spending four years playing professional basketball overseas in Europe, he returned to West Michigan where he earned his MBA degree from Grand Valley State University.

In 2019, he was inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.

He and his Shelly are parents of three sons and reside in Holland, Michigan.

CALVIN DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS JIM TIMMER ON STEVE HONDERD: "I am thrilled to see Steve recognized by the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame. I had the privilege to be his teammate (1990) and later his student-assistant coach (1991). I've always said that he was an easy superstar to play with and coach. On the court, he made everyone better and did whatever he could to help the team win. He was relentless with his drive and determination and was always ready for the next challenge. He practiced as hard as he played in games. He was extremely coachable and  became a true ambassador for Calvin University. Congratulations to Steve and his family for this incredible honor."

CALVIN MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH BILL SALL ON STEVE HONDERD: "It was a pleasure to have Steve as a teammate during my senior year (1990). He was a huge piece on our first NCAA Final Four team and fit in seamlessly with a team that was led by veterans. One of the things that stands out from his career is that he continued to improve each year, adding something new to his game. He was always striving to improve. His work ethic was unmatched. I know fans of Calvin basketball that watched him play still look back on his playing days with fondness. The best part about Steve is that as great as a player that he was, he was, and still is, an even better person. Congratulations to Steve and his family from the Calvin men's basketball program for this honor."

Quote from: BigBallBoy on January 25, 2025, 04:52:40 PMTough Trine-Hope game to watch from a Dutchman perspective. . . .
Tough climb from here for the Dutchmen, but there is always Hope!
Well said BigBallBoy...as Hope's cold shooting woes (28%, and but 3 of 24 3's) continue. But, yes, credit Trine as well as the basket lid.

Hope could have used Josh Decker's 3-point shooting these last two games. Hopefully he and Eli Schoonveld will soon return--both missed. With Albion/Calvin/Trine up next, this is the difficult stretch.

Trine deserves some credit for Hope's poor performance, but I think the bulk of it falls on Hope simply not making a lot of good, open shots.  Other than shooting percentage, this was a pretty even game statistically.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Mrs. Northb's alma mater, she said when she thinks of Spoelmans she thinks of "tall".

Quote from: stlawus on March 08, 2024, 07:29:06 PMI'm not sure Overway is long for the division III ranks after this season.  He can start or be the first option off the bench for plenty division I mid majors.

Then you don't understand Calvin or the MIAA.  Calvin (and other MIAA schools) have a long history of guys that could play at another level, but remain at Calvin for a bunch of other reasons.

Fun fact, my dad, a graduate of Calvin some 60+ years ago, did postgraduate work at Trinity (CT).  So one alma mater will be playing at the other this weekend.  Should they both win, they will play against each other.

He will root for Calvin.

Calvin beats UW-Lacrosse, 84-71.  Ressler with 18. Wheaton is next.

Okay, so who is winning the recruiting battle?

Fun fact, Illiana has been the largest feeder school to Calvin outside of Michigan, and is Mrs. Northb's alma mater.

Rules / judgement question:

Is the call for a backcourt / over & back violation correct at the 1:29:00 mark of the Hope @ Adrian game from Saturday?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4yxuFEHop4

Appears to me that the edge of the ball (in the air) may pass over the line, but the ball when touching the floor never actually does.

I think you are right, it seems like a quick whistle on that call, without the ball touching the ground.

Now that I have put away childish things (for the greater part), I try to avoid the blame game.
For the record, FDF adopted that sig line when I was attempting (with little success) to mediate a dust up many moons ago involving FDF and CM and an unnamed Calvin poster. What can I say: I'm not a marriage therapist! :)

Trust me, CM quotes you often GK   ::)

I'm experiencing a modest growth spurt just contemplating the baleful look CM shoots your way while quoting me!!!  ;)

Sadly, goodknight neglected to properly register ® the phase when first coining it. Just imagine the buckets of money he could recover from CM, due to theft of GK's intellectual property--such as it is. We all know the deep pockets CM has, and the multiple times she must have used it on FDF, so any litigation would have certainly led to a delightful financial recovery. To say nothing of all the money that might have been paid to GK's legal counsel. :'(

Just Bill's WeaselsTM are now closely monitoring the MIAA board.

Perhaps from the lens of a 2022 worldview, but in a very conservative Dutch community in 1882, the differences felt significantly different than they appear to us today. These were people who picked up their lives and followed a pastor across an ocean, then 750 miles west to a place they had never seen. Its not a coincidence that the divide happened six years after Van Raalte died in 1876. Us Dutch have a tendency to get pretty stuck in our ways. When the "new guy" wasn't doing it like Van Raalte did it, there were some reactions.

Some would even be shocked that this was being discussed on the Women's Board, as it is clearly more appropriate to be on a board devoted to the men.
