GAC freshman Jeffrey Dubose, from St. Croix Lutheran, is quietly having a great freshman season. He was already fourth in the league in rushing...and he's got more than 200 yards today in what's looking like a big win over Hamline. That could bump him all the way up to second, behind scrubby's kid.

When was the last time my Gusties had a better record than SJU this late in the season, assuming Bethel holds on? 10 years ago? 20 years ago?

Wonka, how many points are you giving on 10/23?

Well, Dubose is now leading the conference in rushing as a freshman. I'm really not sure how my Gusties can lose!

I don't mean to rub it in (well, I kinda do :) ) ... but is it time to ask if Johnson owns Gags? Bethel has now won 4 of 5, with the only SJU win coming on a record-breaking FG.

*sfury contributed information for this report ;)

Don't mean to call your bluff, but I did see 2 guy's with clickers at the main gate when I entered at about 12....I was givin the guy **** about it say'in I hope it went past 3 didgets....hey kinda laughed and went back to counting.....Didn't seem like 16,000 +  but who knows or really cares....there was a $hit load of people....

I'll also confirm the clickers. I've got a buddy at SJU who was texting one of the official clickers, actually. The last number I saw from this guy (via text) was 16,049 in the middle of the fourth quarter. Apparently another 400 people came in for the final minutes and OT?

It's always interesting to look at the MAC roster. They pulled in kids from Idaho, Georgia, and Massachusetts... what a uniquely different roster. There's also kids from France and Texas on there.

As far as Olaf, Daly is a 6'6" G/F that can shoot the 3. Gunderson was a fringe D2 prospect who should get at least some PT right away...

I wrote about Daly a little bit last year during the HS postseason, after seeing him twice. He's talented, but he's also the definition of rail thin. That said, I know he was recruited pretty heavily by a number of different MIAC schools...and we all know Koz isn't shy about playing freshmen.

UPDATE: Excuse the flub. The Tommies haven't even been to a Final 4, much less won a title in hoops...
Wonk,

You might want to double check your records, Toms have been to at least one final four in hoops.

A reporter using facts?  What a novel idea!

Come to a tailgate. We'll go TDT and Wonka vs. PC and stanbob  ;D

PS - Has anyone else seen the deadspin video on Favre with the Jets intern yet? I'm surprised this hasn't got more mainstream media attention. I'm going to hold off on posting the link because it includes some alleged Favre cock shots...which may explain why TDT has been so quiet of late  :P

Sitting at my desk listening to the sound of freedom overhead - it's Fleet Week and the Blue Angels are up practicing for their shows this weekend.  They're flying right over the city.

Sure, winning generally helps attendance.  So it's even stranger that while UST has made a marked turnaround and is now performing well and winning consitently (playoffs last year and almost certain this year), there has been no increase in their attendance.

For years, this was a similar tune with the a UST basketball team that was on a level just below Johnnie football. It took a couple popular guys on a great squad to get that place packed for the more mundane games. With sustained national title tournament success, the gym has been packed solid for the last 3ish years. I'm not sure how the current football players are currently thought of on campus, but that could also be playing a role.

Coincidentally, the SJU basketball team has taken a pretty steep tumble (6th, 5th, 6th in the league the last three years) since the Witt-Keating-Bigalke glory days at the turn of the century...and attendance has followed suit. Like the rest of the MIAC, the Johnnies have their fair share of frontrunning fans.

A sign that you may have lost a big rivalry game last week:

You're taking solice in superior attendance numbers.  ::)
Nope, the rivalry game is Saturday at Arden Hills. Bethel has beaten SJU more than any team in the MIAC in the past decade-that's a rivalry. The last time (besides last weekend) that UST beat SJU, the players were in middle school---hardly a rivalry  8-)

Can't help but wonder how many of the "die hard" SJU fans would still show up if the team had a stretch of .500-type seasons. Point being, it's easy for all the undergrads to jump on the bandwagon and the alums to stay involved when you're supporting a perennial national title contender.

Only one school in the MIAC has been able to make that claim in the last 20+ years, which has a huge effect on attendance. Obviously.

As a counterpoint to the unspoken assumption that SJU has better/more committed fans, I remember hundreds (if not thousands) filing out early back in Kofoed's redshirt freshman year when the Johnnies looked horrible through three quarters against UWEC. And by horrible, I believe we're talking down 21-7. Most MIAC schools deal with that on an every-other-week basis  :-\

One parent I chatted with about it said that his son didn't feel like St. Johns really wanted him.  Instead there was an arrogance from the staff that he should feel honored that they were even talking to him.  I think that speaks to the point about St. Johns relying a lot on their reputation to land recruits instead of doing all they could/should to recruit athletes these days.

I can't say that things have not changed in the past 11 years, but I can't say I got that feeling at all from the SJU staff (and I was by no means an all-star).  I truly felt welcome there and had a great time on recruiting visits.  They were not as persistant as other schools, though, and perhaps that could be viewed as arrogance?

I, too, considered UST, but didn't really feel that they wanted me.  But, that's the recruiting process, I guess.

In hind sight, if I would have gone to the place where I was recruited hardest, I would have ended up at Hamline or Bemidji State...glad I made the right choice  ;D

Frank Rickard approves this statement.

I heard rumors of a PC-usTDT confrontation...have we heard the last of usTDT and Post Patterns???

I saw it, and I'm paraphrasing:

TDT: A hearty welcome to you and D3football.com
PC: Why thank you TDT
TDT: I know we disagree from time to time, but come, enjoy a bratwurst with me and let's discuss the keys to today's game.
PC: I would enjoy that.

I think that's about how it went. Some the details are a little fuzzy as I had a few adult beverages.

I was slightly hopped up on Veek's Diet Dew at the time (thanks again), but I don't think Bench is paraphrasing. That conversation belongs in direct quotes. I'm still not sure why ROR got involved before they could hug it out...

In other news, here's a quick piece I wrote with a video from Saturday's game. This video starts about 5 seconds after I denied a high-five from a Johnnie alum and got scolded for it...

Not sure if anyone else noticed it, but Gags had quite the kicking quote in Saturday's gameday program (via David Burns' favorite memory). Surprised none of the other papers were able to pick up on that thing after the way things unfolded...

RE: Carleton

I wrote a story about the Carleton flooding last week. Carleton's media guru told me the football field was probably done for the season, but Northfield HS *and* St. Olaf had offered up their athletic facilities for the Knights, pending prior commitments.

I haven't scoured the schedule to see how that might work for football, but I've got to imagine the Knights would find either of those options more appealing than going on the road every week...

I'm new to the MIAC to some extent.  I've been in WIAC country forever so this is new except for teams that occasionally played some of the WIAC's.  So just curious...what are peoples thoughts on the mac (3-1) vs hamline (0-3) game.  I know coaches on both staffs so i was just curious if people had some input.

Call me crazy, but it's a bad week to be asking for that sort of analysis...
