General Division III issues / Re: Future of Division III
Last post by Gray Fox - Yesterday at 04:19:51 PMQuote from: Gregory Sager on Yesterday at 01:41:07 PMWhat about team handball?Quote from: WUPHF on Yesterday at 11:30:43 AMQuote from: Gregory Sager on Yesterday at 10:37:56 AMI've been assiduously studying women's flag football games on YouTube in preparation for North Park's WFF debut this spring, trying to learn the lingo and see how the sport-specific rules shake out in actual game play so that I can call the games without stumbling around and looking like a tyro.
What I've mostly learned is that the Mexicans are really, really good at women's flag football, and Diana Flores is the Tom Brady of this sport.
I just assumed that flag football was mostly driven by the American suburbs, but that is interesting.
Mexico has a surprisingly long and proud history of men's college football, but I really had no idea that they were so dominant in flag football.
Apparently, flag football is also coming to the Olympics or maybe has already been an Olympic sport.
I love that North Park has a Norwegian on the squad.
Yes, Aurora Drangevag is NPU flag football's version of what I call the "Random Scandinavian Factor" of North Park athletics. Seemingly every sport on campus that doesn't involve bats and gloves has to have at least one Norwegian or Swede on the roster, regardless of whether or not the sport is popular in Scandinavia -- and at one point a few years ago we did indeed have a Swedish baseball player.
Because Aurora's high school was named after Edvard Grieg, I'm hoping to talk NPU's flag football head coach Ramon Palma into having the Vikings run out onto the field before games with "In the Hall of the Mountain King" blaring over the P.A.![]()

Last post by mwunder - Yesterday at 03:30:22 PMQuote from: iwu70 on Yesterday at 03:16:52 PMBig game for IWU tomorrow up in Kenosha. The CCIW race begins.
Greg gave a good rundown of the new poll, with IWU dropping to #10 after the loss to Stout.
IWU will be without Fridman on Wednesday, with a significant shoulder injury. Likely out for some weeks. Niego will get the start and David Williams will likely find more playing time as the backup PG.
So far, the huge improvement for the Titans is the post/paint play of Noah Cleveland, an almost automatic double-double and then some. I expect to see more of Ruggles off the bench as well.

Since it worked out so well last season, I will once again predict IWU to go undefeated through the CCIW conference this season.

If both leave that would be a pretty big hit at both receiver and KR, when combined with the guys already graduating.
For whatever reason tufts has had a tougher time than the rest of the league retaining their top talent. A lot of transfers recently from their top guys and it has also been rare that they have been able to get top seniors to return for 5th years at the same rate as other schools

Last post by iwu70 - Yesterday at 03:10:38 PMIWU moves up to #13 in the new poll, after a successful weekend defeating two top-20 teams. Carroll also moves up to #16.
Yes, GreenBeer, two boots. Not good. At least Sears is back now and it sounds like Laura Mahlum may be closer to a return too. We'll see.
The defense of Heyden on the All-American Harris from WashU was really something, perhaps some of the best defense I've seen in my many years watching IWU basketball. Harris with 5 points and sitting on the bench major portions of the first half with two fouls, and with great frustration. Heyden did a terrific job and was the MVP of the Championship Game IMHO. Of course, for the tournament as a whole, Sawyer White was a very deserving MVP. She's really picking up her offensive game to match here tremendous defense, as well as being the court general for the Titans this season.
IWU to Augie tomorrow night -- weather permitting. The CCIW race begins . . .

2025 UpdateHow many other games were "closer than the final score"?
Year........ Team...... Score.... W/L.... 1999 HSU 40-33 Win 2000 at HSU 30-33 Loss 2001 UMHB 30-6 Win 2002 UMHB 48-38 Win 2003 at ETBU 41-42 Loss 2004 UMHB 13-32 Loss 2005 UMHB 6-35 Loss 2007 at UMHB 23-52 Loss 2011 McM 16-25 Loss 2021 at UMHB 3-13 Loss 2022 HSU 14-7 Win 2022 UMHB 17-24 Loss 2023 HSU 20-6 Win 2024 UMHB 22-29 Loss 2025 HSU (27+pick six 7 = 34)-24 Win
2021: Trinity's 13-3 loss to UMHB in first round. For 58 minutes Trinity held the national champs and #3 offense in the country to only two field goals (I think they missed a third). Down 6-3 with 2:13 left, Trinity held UMHB to what would have been an attempted field goal on 4th and 6 from Trinity's 22, which would have given Trinity one last drive to try and tie. Trinity's player jumped offsides attempting to block the field goal, making it 4th and 1, so UMHB went for it and scored on the ensuing play. I'm pretty sure Urban instructed them to let him score so they could get the ball back, but it made the final score look less close than the game was played. The entire game was a defense masterpiece by both squads.
That is probably the saltiest I have ever been when it comes to the unfair Texas-teams playoff matchups. Trinity's defense was probably the best in the program's history and #2 overall in D3 that year. Their offense was also very good, but it was Tucker Horn's first year as a starter and they couldn't get anything going against a great UMHB front.
After Trinity, UMHB steamrolled through the playoffs and put up 42 against #13 defense BSC, 49 against #12 defense Linfield, 24 against #22 defense UW-Whitewater, and 57 against Defending Champ North Central in the national championship. I know most people know all of this since the game was fairly recent, but I thank you for bringing up this painful topic to allow me to vent some more.
