NYU's first defense as holders of the Women's BeltTM ended up successful.  Smith gave a 5 star match to try to claim the baubles, and stayed within single digits for a lot of the contest.

Many people did not think that Smith was worthy of being a "Final Boss" to end the season, but the Pioneers proved up to the challenge.

However the match came to an end when Sofia Rosa of Smith was forced to submit to NYU's suffocating defense.   After Rosa submitted and fouled out, NYU hit Violet Storm ZeroTM and made the cover to not only remain Women's BeltTM champions, but also claim the Big Doorstop-- the NCAA Walnut and Bronze.

The Women's BeltTM travels to the corner of Bleecker and Mercer Streets in Greenwich Village where it will be based for the summer.   Among the stops on the summer tour, Caroline Peper and the family are planning to make arrangements for the Women's BeltTM to pay a visit to Stonehill in Easton, MA for a few days-- there will be plenty of security on the tour to make sure that no one absconds with the baubles.

Once again, the final BeltTM path for the season was as follows:

2023-24 BeltTM Path

3/18/23:  Transylvania
3/14/24:  New York University

NYU's next title defense will be in November, 2024.  Until then, enjoy the off-season.

Since March 14, 2024, NYU has successfully defended the Women's Belt TM 17 times.  No team has even come close to getting a pinfall or submission on the Violets this season.

NYU's 18th title defense will be on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Ratner Center in Chicago, when the Violets face the team that came the closest last season to defeating them in the Chicago Maroons.  Should that defense be successful, the anticipated 19th title defense will be played at WashU in St. Louis on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

That is your latest update on the Women's Belt TM situation.

After taking possession of the Womens BeltTM in the semifinals in 2024, NYU has defended ItTM once to finish the 23-24 season, then 31 times in the 24-25 season, and now 8 times in the 25-26 season to reach 40 straight defenses.

The Womens BeltTM is getting ItsTM passport ready. NYU is heading north of the border to Montreal for a pair of games on the 29th and 30th

So far, yep!

By the end of the year I expected NYU's SOS to be top 40.

NYU's 48th defense of the Women's Belt TM today has been their toughest so far.  UChicago has gotten most of the offense in-- hitting NYU with clotheslines, bodyslams, etc.  The Maroons have made 10 near falls on the Violets this afternoon and the crowd at the Ratner Center in Chicago is sensing that we may have a new champion tonight.

Watch the match on FloCollege.  The match is in the halftime break.

Great effort by UChicago, but NYU made the Maroons tap out in the final 5 minutes of the match.

NYU is still your Women's Belt TM holder.  48 successful title defenses--- 78 consecutive wins in a row overall.

Next title defense-- Friday, January 30, 2026 vs CWRU at the Paulson Center at the corner of Bleecker and Mercer Streets in Greenwich Village, NYC.

Great match in NYU's 50th defense of the Women's BeltTM today.   I was watching the defense on my phone from the Brandeis campus, and I am deeply relieved that I did not have to post a title change on the d3Boards from my phone.

Still, Carnegie Mellon had 15 near falls today, and made NYU kick out of the Tartans's fabled Scottish SlamTM finisher twice!   NYU only had 4 near falls in the match, but on the 5th try, NYU hit Violet Storm ZeroTM and made the cover for the win.

The match, however, was so exciting that Carnegie Mellon has decided to exercise their rematch clause for the fabled title.   Conditional upon NYU successfully defending the Women's BeltTM next Friday in Cleveland, we will run it back in Pittsburgh next Sunday.   If NYU successfully defends the Women's BeltTM twice next weekend, the Violets will also set a new DIII consecutive games winning streak, breaking the 81 games won in a row by Wash U from 1998 to 2001.

The Women's BeltTM has enjoyed teasing the win streak record. Transylvania's streak reached 64 wins before The Women's BeltTM decided to end it and go with NYU who is now threatening the record.

Today, NYU will defend the Women's BeltTM for the 52nd straight time when they take on the Tartans at the Highmark Center in Pittsburgh at noon ET.

However, this defense is a special one, for if the title defense is successful, NYU will set a new DIII women's basketball consecutive wins record with their 82nd straight win, breaking the 81 consecutive game win streak set by the Nancy Fahey coached WashU dynasty teams led by Alia Fischer and Tasha Rodgers from 1998 to 2001.  That dynasty won 3 straight national championships within that winning streak, and won their 4th consecutive national championship the year that the streak was snapped.   Fischer graduated with the WashU class of 2000, so Tasha Rodgers was the leader of the 2000-01 WashU women's basketball team that won the 4th consecutive national championship.

In 2001, WashU was attempting to break the 88 game consecutive winning streak set by John Wooden and the UCLA men's basketball teams from 1971 to 1974-- at the time, it was the all-time consecutive games winning streak in college basketball, men or women.   That attempt was thwarted on Tuesday, January 16, 2001, in the "Wydown Showdown" at Fontbonne College in St. Louis.   Tasha Rodgers scored 29 points for the WashU Bears in the losing effort.

The WashU dynasty teams also only won 40 consecutive UAA games in a row before that streak was stopped at the Coles Center at NYU on Friday, February 2, 2001, when Dari Magyar hit the "Miracle in Manhattan" 3 pointer at the buzzer shot for the NYU 65-64 win.   As a result of that shot, NYU and WashU eventually ended up co-champions of the UAA and the UAA automatic bid had to be settled by a coin flip since each of the 2 teams only lost 1 game in conference play to the other team and swept all of the other UAA conference opponents.

NYU is currently carrying an ongoing winning streak of 47 consecutive UAA games going into today as well, which started on Friday, January 20, 2023 with a win vs Emory at the then home court of the Brooklyn Athletic Facility on NYU's Tandon campus.

Less than 5 hours away until the start of the match....

In the 52nd defense, the winner, and still Women's BeltTM champion, the NYU Violets!

Violets stand alone in D3 basketball by either gender for the consecutive games won streak-- 82 wins in a row.

In the last minutes of the match, NYU took command and it was much easier this time to hit Violet Storm ZeroTM for the 1-2-3 over the Tartans!

Congrats to NYU women's basketball on making history today!

Next title defense is on Friday February 13 at Rochester vs the U of R Yellowjackets at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

After another close call last week, NYU will be defending the Women's BeltTM for the 57th straight time today when they host the Brandeis Judges at the corner of Bleecker and Mercer in Greenwich Village, NYC.

NYU is a 31 point favorite to win this afternoon on NYU Senior Day, according to the D3Datacast computer.    However, if Brandeis wins today, the ScenarioTM will happen on the women's side, just like it did on the men's side a few weeks ago.

An NYU win today will send the Violets into the NCAA DIII tournament on an 87 game winning streak and a 53 game consecutive UAA winning streak going into next season.   NYU would also be the first women's basketball team since the UAA was founded in 1987 to go undefeated in UAA competition for 3 years in a row.

NYU is approaching the record 62 game title defense streak of the Women's BeltTM set by former D3 school Thomas More from March of 2015 to March of 2017.  The beginning of that streak set by Thomas More is mired in controversy, however, because it is alleged that Thomas More initially won the Women's BeltTM by cheating while the ref was not looking.   Thomas More had to vacate the natty that came with the Women's BeltTM that season, but unfortunately there was no provisions in the rulebook to strip the Saints of the Women's Belt.TM, so the 62 game consecutive title defense streak stands as the official record.
