We all hear alot about the salaries of big-time college football coaches. Interesting to note that assistants at major D-I programs are paid pretty well, too. Not saying they don't deserve it, because they put in the work to be sure...just ran across this and thought it was interesting...

Alabama Salaries: Offensive line coach Joe Pendry ($350,000), defensive head coach Steele ($350,000), defensive coordinator Smart ($275,000), running backs coach Burton Burns ($220,000), outside linebackers coach Lance Thompson ($210,000), defensive line coach Bo Davis ($190,000), and receivers coach Curt Cignetti ($170,000).

Clemson Salaries: Vic Koenning--$260,000 ($230,00), Rob Spence--$250,000 ($207,000); Brad Scott--$200,000 ($196,000); Dabo Swinney--$200,000 ($195,000); Ron West--$150,000 ($141,000); David Blackwell--$142,000 ($142,000); Andre Powell--$125,000 ($120,000); Chris Rumph--$120,000 ($101,000); Billy Napier--$110,000 ($85,000)

You can see why some successful D3 coaches take the leap when offered the chance ... but it makes you respect successful coaches that stay in D3 even more.

I think some coaches like the job stability you can get in a D3 program.  Stability at least compared to a D1 school. 

I saw last year when Luther College was hiring a new head FB coach they said that the average HC salary in the IIAC was 65k and that they were competitive with that.  It was also said that a coach that turned down the Simpson job was offered 75k.  He turned it down because he was making more at a nearby high school. 

When I looked at the D2 board it seems like in general D3 and D2 are pretty similar.  There were some D2 coaches from some typically high powered programs that were making 120k - 200k.  But in general most were under 100K...which surprised me.

Yeah,
From what I can tell from what these guys wear and drive, they are not living out of the normal middle-class stratosphere.

A lot of these guys are family guys with young kids, and you spend so much time bouncing around trying to rise up the ladder, that I believe stability is a concern. At this level though, you can't blame a guy for leaving for a job with better pension, or a $10 or $20,000 raise.

If you're making $3 mil and you go for $4 mil, probably not a huge change in lifestyle, but if you're the only one in your family who works and you get that kind of offer, you gotta make ends meet.

On the bright side, much of D3 is in small towns where the cost of living isn't too high.

Exactly.  And I feel there is more opportunity for the D3 program to be part of the community in a traditional sense, as opposed to a major BCS program where people seem to live or die based on who wins each week.
