It has been a while since I posted last time, but I wanted to vent about the final 2 minutes of the Rochester at Brandeis women's game on Sunday.  I should have posted this on Monday, but as a Brandeis fan, I watched this frenzied finish in person and ended up mentally very sick at the outcome of the game- to the point that I did not sit in the stands to watch the men's game, which the Brandeis men fortunately won.   Brandeis women were up 10 points with 2 minutes to go,-- score was 60-50,  but not only did the Brandeis players not handle Rochester's pressure well in the final 2 minutes, but the Brandeis coaching staff also screwed up the timeout situation, not realizing that the UAA is operating under media timeouts this year.

Before the FloCollege contract took effect this year, UAA basketball games had no media timeouts, and each team got 3 30's and 2 60's to use.  Beginning this year, the UAA is operating under media timeouts, with the length of the media timeouts the same as a regular 60 second full timeout.  However, that means that each team gets 3 30 second timeouts and 1 60 second timeout to use.   Moreover, in women's college basketball, there is no "use it or lose it" timeout rule for the first half, so if no team burns a timeout in the first or second quarters, all 4 timeouts for each team carry over to the second half.

As the game went on, neither team burned any timeouts in the first 3 quarters, so we were down to the final 5:26 of the game with both teams having all of their timeouts remaining.

Brandeis called their first 30 second timeout with 5:26 left in the game-- As that was the first called timeout of the second half, it automatically extended to a full timeout, and since that was also the first called timeout of the second half, it did not replace the under 5 media timeout of the fourth quarter.

The final media timeout of the game came with 4:56 remaining in regulation.  At that point, Brandeis had 3 timeouts remaining, while Rochester had all 4 of their timeouts remaining.

With 2:12 left in the game, Brandeis was up 58-50, and a technical foul is called on the Rochester bench.  Abby Kennedy goes 1-2 from the line to make it Brandeis up 59-50.   Another Rochester foul with 2:09 left in the game sends Abby Kennedy to the line again.   Kennedy makes 1-2 from the charity stripe to make it Brandeis 60, Rochester 50 with 2:09 left.   Enough time for Rochester to start their final 17-4 run to win the game.

With 1:45 left, Brandeis takes their 2nd 30 second timeout.   Brandeis now has 1 30 second and 1 60 second timeout remaining.  Brandeis still leading 60-50 over Rochester.  Brandeis ball coming out of the timeout, but  5 second violation is called on the point guard, and Rochester immediately gets the ball and scores a quick layup to cut the UR deficit to 8 points.

With 44.7 seconds remaining in the game, Brandeis ball, Brandeis is up 62-56, and Brandeis calls their third timeout (final 30 second timeout) to advance the ball.   Brandeis has 1 60 second timeout remaining-- Rochester has all 4 of their timeouts remaining.

Coming out of the timeout, Brandeis still cannot get the ball back in, and another 5 second violation is called.  Rochester quickly scores to make it Brandeis up, 62-58, and with 35.7 seconds remaining in regulation, Brandeis calls their last timeout.  A 60 second timeout.   The scoreboard is now showing that Brandeis has no timeouts left, but for some reason, the final called timeout for Brandeis is not recorded in the play by play sheet.   However, now that I have rewatch the video replay on FloCollege, it clearly indicates that Brandeis now has no timeouts left, while Rochester has all 4 timeouts remaining once the timeout is called with 35.7 seconds left.

Rochester fouls Katherine Vaughan, and Katherine Vaughan sinks both free throws to extend the Brandeis lead to 6 points at 64-58 with 31.5 seconds left.   Rochester takes their first timeout to advance the ball.

Rochester hits a quick 3 pointer to make it Brandeis 64, Rochester 61, and immediately fouls the Brandeis point guard, Shabazz.    Shabazz goes 0-2 from the charity stripe with 26.9 seconds remaining, and Rochester takes their 2nd timeout to advance the ball with the game clock now at 26.0 seconds remaining.  Brandeis still with 0 timeouts remaining, while Rochester has 2 timeouts left.

A quick layup by Rochester makes it Brandeis 64, Rochester 63 with 22.5 seconds left.

At that point, Brandeis cannot handle the inbound pass, turns it over, and attempts to call another timeout.   WAIT A MINUTE!  BRANDEIS HAS NO TIMEOUTS LEFT! TOO MANY TIMEOUTS CALLED BY BRANDEIS!  TECHNICAL FOUL ON THE BRANDEIS BENCH!

Rochester gets 2 free throws and the ball.   Frankie Gomez hits the 2 free throws to give Rochester the lead at 65-64.   Another 2 more free throws by Rochester makes the final Rochester 67, Brandeis 64.

The Rochester alumni and family members in attendance celebrated Rochester coach Jim Scheible's 600th career victory, achieved in this incredible fashion.   As for me, the Brandeis women still haven't swept a home Friday/Sunday weekend in the UAA since the 2017-18 season, but still has 2 more opportunities left this season.  Next chance comes with the Carnegie Mellon/CWRU home weekend on Friday, January 30, and Sunday, February 1.

On another note, the game tipped off at 12:15 PM ET on Sunday due to logistics issues with the laundry situation involving the Rochester women's basketball game jerseys which forced a late Sunday morning wash of all of the Rochester women's game jerseys due to failure to take care of the issue either on Friday night or Saturday.  The game jerseys didn't come out of the dryer until after 11:30 AM.  The Rochester women did initial warmups in the practice jerseys, and was able to start their final 20 minute warmup with the game jerseys starting at 11:55 AM.

Wow...
Other than all that, how did you enjoy the play Mrs. Lincoln?  ;)

Great comeback for Rochester but certainly appears Brandeis grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory.

True that. ;) I guess, though, that the Brandeis home victory over the Emory women on Friday will still be a highlight of the season.  Not only was it a victory over a top 25 team and a victory over a top 50 Massey ranked team, it also snapped a 14 game losing streak to the Eagles.  I certainly wasn't expecting the Brandeis women to end up getting Top 25 votes anytime this season either-- that was a bonus.   I should be grateful as a fan for what I did get this weekend.

For now, I am looking forward to seeing if the NYU women break WashU's 81 game consecutive winning streak, and if so, if NYU become the first DIII women's basketball team to break John Wooden's UCLA men's basketball 88 game consecutive winning streak.  In my Brandeis student days from 1987 to 1991, 88 was the magic number in college basketball to break.  If that happens, then I will see about the UConn women's basketball winning streaks of 90 and 111.

Anyway, that was me letting out some steam.  Let's see what happens this weekend.

I will be watching this weekend's action on FloCollege-- I may watch the NYU at WashU game live on the bedroom Roku TV, and put the Brandeis women at UChicago on the computer.

Understood.
Sometimes I've got a few games going & a few on pause to get back to later.  ;)

Not sure anyone will slow down NYU during the regular season...maybe even beyond.
However, if there's a chance for someone to knock them off, it would probably be at Wash U.

... and Wash U. has the most incentive to do it.

The DIII Women's Basketball Committee has released the official NPI summary report for games played through February 1, 2026.  It is available at:

http://stats.ncaa.org/selection_rankings/nitty_gritties/48515

On the women's side, the NPI numbers calculated by the NCAA are matching those calculated by D3Datacast-- at least for the UAA teams.

Tonight--

NYU will attempt to tie the DIII women's basketball all-time consecutive winning streak of 81 games set by the WashU Bears from 1998 to 2001 when the Violets are in Cleveland to take on the CWRU Spartans in a conference rematch from last Friday.

The game is the second game of a UAA doubleheader and will start at approx. 7:30 PM ET on FloCollege.  Ron Jantz will be on the call from Horsburgh Gymnasium.

This is the annual "Throwback Weekend" for CWRU and as is tradition on this weekend, the CWRU women's basketball team will be wearing throwback golden uniforms depicting Mather College.

CWRU is also celebrating its 200th anniversary this weekend as well.

Tonight's NYU game vs CWRU is taking place 25 years and a few weeks from the date when WashU won their 81st game in what was at the time the longest winning streak in women's college basketball.   WashU's 81st consecutive win took place on Friday, January 12, 2001, in a home game vs UChicago at the Wash U Field House in St. Louis.   That streak would end the following Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at what was then Fontbonne College when the Fontbonne Griffins upset the Wash U Bears, 79-68, in what would be their only win over a Nancy Fahey coached Wash U women's squad in the entire history of the series.

On Friday, NYU successfully tied Wash U's all-time DIII 81 game consecutive game winning streak.

Today, the Violets will attempt to break it when they take on the Carnegie Mellon Tartans at the Highmark Center in Pittsburgh at noon ET.

On Friday evening, the FloCollege server crashed at 7:30 PM due to high traffic.  The UAA schools were able to upload their live streams onto the server, but I was among many people who could not get on to the FloCollege website by either desktop, Chromebook, phone app, or Roku streaming TV to watch the game live.   Fortunately, CWRU came to the rescue and provided a free backup stream via Boxcast for fans to watch.

I do not know if WUPHF confirmed this with Carnegie Mellon, but he messaged me last night to say that Carnegie Mellon is planning to provide a free live backup stream on Youtube of the NYU vs Tartans women's basketball game just in case the FloSports server crashes due to high traffic again at around noon ET today.  There are no plans to provide backup streams of the UAA men's basketball games live today because it is anticipated that the anticipated extremely high traffic on the FloCollege server accounting for NYU's attempt to make history today will go away once the women's games end and the UAA men's slate begins.

In the worst case scenario, I will follow the live stats and watch the replays of the games later in the day once the server traffic clears up.  The server problems did not affect the ability of the UAA games from Feb. 6, 2026 to be available to watch on-demand on FloCollege, so I can catch up this week on missed games.
