The Third Division

Having to wait until your 3rd year as a varsity program to play on your own football turf is wild.

I actually feel like getting to that by your 3rd year is a good accomplishment.  Seems to me that there are many examples of new teams (both college and HS) having to wait significantly longer.

Berry's home stadium opened in Year 3. Mary Hardin-Baylor, in football-crazy Texas, didn't have its own home stadium for more than a decade. Greensboro took 24 years to get an on-campus facility.

These instances are in the minority, to be sure, but they are not unprecedented.

Isn't it also the case that most schools have re-purposed an existing facility instead of building a brand new stadium?

For sure.

Which is exactly what Calvin is doing this year (in year two).  Year one they played at a local high school (GR Christian HS), and now in year two they are playing in their new soccer stadium while the football facility is being constructed.  They likely would have played at the soccer stadium last season, but it was just being completed and likely not ready to host football.
