I heard through the grapevine CAR landed Carter Biewen from Armstrong. Can we pencil him in for the all-FY team right now? That brings up a good question...top 5 contributing freshmen for 07-08? ..

PTP - A couple of years ago, Big Fork could sit on Johnson & make him share the ball. I'm not so sure if as a FY, Biewen is going to have that much clout.  In addition, Carter Biewen & Zach Johnson really play the same type of position - a 3/4.  All in all, if this report is accurate, a nice pick up for the Carlies.  Biewen certainly could become yet another Carleton Knight to earn All MIAC FY honors.

Mose - stick your head in here.   Do you happen to know which team holds the record for most consecutive years of placing a player on the the All-MIAC FY team?  I've got to believe it must be Carleton.   Does anyone have time to research this question?  Kneez?

Drake, that is a good point about ZJ playing much more unselfishly when Fork was around. I'd be surprised if Biewen didn't make it on All FY team in spite of ZJ's shot slection, just because Kalland makes a point to start a freshman each year.

Any other story lines to follow around the MIAC? Interesting to see such a tough schedule for the TOMMIES. Should toughen up the new core of guys in time for MIAC play. I'm excited to see how Nicoli handles the pressure in college with his little frame. He should be on the All MIAC FY team as well if he plays 20 minutes a game or more. I can't really think of anyone else to answer my own question right now...

Nice find Nites.  Are you too a man of the cloth, or in training – seminary?  I always took you for a Carleton or possible MAC fan, but it seems your interests or connections stretch to the great white north as well.  Sounds like an interesting Lutheran church in Houston.

Drake,

No, I'm not a man of the cloth.   Just a Christian.

You give me too much credit for the find as it was a lot easier than that.  I get Kerry's Daily Devotion e-mails and I happen to know he played at Concordia because we were high school teammates.   :)  As for me, I went the D-I/D-II baseball route.

I'm more just a fan of MIAC basketball than a diehard fan of any team.  You'd get a good laugh if you knew how I got started following the league.   ;D  Are you a Tommie alum?

In related news & notes, I spotted this on the IIAC board: Good things happen when you lose to the Johnnies (If you're a young, hungry coach  ;D )

PTPer - I assume that Carter has some relation to Anna Biewen on the Carlton women's team???  If so, that would explain his commitment to the Knights.

See, we both thought the other poster was something they're not.   Here I was thinking you were a Carlie or Mac alum.    :D  It may appear that way, but no, I'm not a Tommie grad.  I live in the St. Paul area & just happen to know some of the Tommie players from the last 7-8 years.  Prior to that, I followed the league from a distance & would on occasion check out the  league finals, or catch a game or two a season.

Like yourself,  I'm really more of a league fan than that of a particular team, but as each season progresses I develop an attachment to 1 or 2 teams.  Since I've known some of the UST players, they've usually been the team I've more or less supported over the years.  I should probably change my name to MIAC fan or something along those lines.  ;D

You thought I might be a MAC alum because I, unlike you, don't live in the area.   ???  ???
I only seem to be a big MAC fan because I love their webcast.  It's the only way I can get a visual on the folks that everyone talks about!   :)

Isn't there already someone who posts as miacfan?

Funny stuff!!  HAM, COBBS & GAC have on occasion in the past offered up webcasts.

You do a pretty good job posting on the games & players for not seeing anyone of the games in person.   I don't know if I could be as "involved" with the league if I had to rely on the webcast only.

Now it makes sense -- when we were discussing the Cobbs' recruiting situation last winter, you seemed to have a pretty good grasp of their recruiting challenges.

I think I'll stick with Drake.  ;)

Thank you for the compliment.   :-[  Basketball at the D-III level seems to be basketball at its purest level.  It's a team game and if you understand the game and you understand what it takes to win in any sport, you can hopefully translate that into an occasional intelligent observation (I hope).  You and a number of others on the Board have some very good insights that don't necessarily come from actually watching the games because you really understand the game.

I knew that it wouldn't take you but a minute to put 2 and 2 together! ;)

If I had to guess I would say that Anna and Carter Biewen are not related. Anna hails from Edina and Carter played at Armstrong. If they are related, my thought would be cousins. I did hear down here from a credible source that Anna Biewen has a family tie to Gustavus somehow with Gus Young. Don't ask me what it is or how to explain it. I was told about it at a bar on the 4th of July.

PTPer35

Good question Drake, the Biewens are indeed cousins. Good guess Will. You are also correct about the family ties to Gus, although I have no idea exactly who went there. Apparently Anna was expected to go to Gustavus but chose Carleton instead.

Thanks for the update Sum.  It's nice to read these articles from around the state.  I'm a little surprised though by Buffalo HS Coach Nick Guida's comments referring to his alma mater as ...And it's going to be a great deal for the university and community. They are both very talented kids."  Unless he was misquoted, as a graduate of Concordia, he should know its Concordia College, not Concordia University.   ::) :D

I still find it interesting how Concordia seems to have some special affinity for recruiting athletes from the northwestern suburbs of the twin cities.  With the exception of Anthony Boike & Nate Ohme from Bloomington, you hardly ever hear of players from Edina, Bloomington, St. Paul etc. on their athletic rosters.  The typical Cobber twin cities recruit seem to be players from northern burbs such as Buffalo, Mounds View, Osseo, Anoka, Brooklyn Park etc.  Mebbe it's that hunting & fishing appeal of being up north that resonates with these kids. (shrug)  :-\

FYI - I checked the Carleton website & they state:

A Carleton freshman has placed on the All-Rookie team for the MIAC each of the last seven seasons (Scott Christensen, Tanner Schieck, Kyle Beste, Dan Forkrud, Phillips, Tommy Drake and Zach Johnson)...
