Solid win last night for UW-River Falls. Not surprising at all, but a good win.If anyone thought they wouldn't be any good, they were a little naive.

What we learned nothing about is whether they are 2024 good or 2025 elite. We won't get a hint of that until Wartburg in two weeks.

In 2024 they beat Greenville 66-7, Mt. St. Joseph 68-9, and Eau Claire 71-14 before proceeding to lose three of their next four WIAC games. They might be that again.

In 2025 we all know how they dominated. They might be that again.

Yesterday was what it was always going to be. A fun home game after winning the natty that told us virtually nothing.

A solid win??
First you get a historically terrible team that some high school teams could probably beat. Secondly that terrible team has to fly half way across the country. Then, you basically obliterate them by halftime before sending them packing. And that's a good win? I don't think so. I think the absolute best that W could be classified as is an expected win. Too early to tell, but it's possible there may be 3-4 better teams in the conference this year than UWRF.

I know scheduling non conference games can be tough especially if you have 3.
If you're scheduling a non conference game vs. a D2 team or NAIA team or a really bad D3 team you basically wasted a game from a NPI standpoint because none of those games will be used in your NPI calculation. If you go 8-2 you're fighting for your playoff life and need 5 quality wins to beat out the other 8-2 teams from a NPI standpoint. Where are your 5 best wins coming from?

It's a good win because you don't lose any NPI.  It's a much better outcome than La Crosse losing to a #11 ranked St John's. 
There are no bad wins!
Did they test the starters for 4 quarters?  No
Did this get them ready for Coe this weekend?  Yes
You are always better off scheduling a bad D3 team than any D2 schools.

You essentially agree with the entire point of my post (we didn't learn anything about how good they are). They played who was in front of them and won by 66. It's not like...you know... a stretch to call that a solid win.

I agree on what you're saying about not taking a loss.

But a win against a bad D3 team may result in the same as playing a D2 team.
Not all your wins are used in your NPI calculation. You don't have to schedule a NCC but if you can get a better win it might help your overall NPI.

You use your top 5 adjusted wins in the NPI calculation. You could use more games if they improve your overall NPI but usually the more games you pick the lower the NPI's are for those games.
