That would be just crazy if UD actually beat Loras. The last time was 1984. We shall see. Central has been a dominant threat for years, but just like Nebraska in DI, the time has past. Central people are very classy though, always thought that, so good luck.

Every one of them is classy with the exception of Dutchfan1 :-*

I guess there are always some of them. I came off that way too, just look at my karma, who's Wartburg scrimmaging this weekend? Or did they already?

Pakk -- how familiar are you with McMartin? I think he's bringing a lot to the program, although we are in no way dominant right now. It'll take another year or so before I could consider the Dutch a "dominating" team again....and this is coming from the most vocal Dutch fan around. :)

Gee, WH, thanks... don't ever let anyone accuse you of being a classy guy, either.   :D

CooCoo -- you've been sniffing too much of the "quality" Cedar Rapids air if you honestly think that Wartburg isn't the IIAC's dominating force right now. Simply put, the Knights are the team to beat, until or unless proven otherwise. They have been for at least three years now. Will they stay on top forever? I really doubt it -- no domination last forever (Central is a great example of this.) Central will always be respected for its history, just as Wartburg deserves the respect it is getting now. Respect is earned -- your KoHawks are going to have to win more than a few games (and not cry about refs in Dubuque) in order for you to earn the kind of respect that both Wartburg and Central share.

Before we talk post season, we need to take care of the regular season first -- bragging rights come in November, not August.  ;)

On an unrelated note, that is one of the most creative usernames I've seen in a while, Coocoo.

Pakk- Times change- you can't hold on to one legacy forever. Noone can dispute the fact that Wartburg is the team (iowa conference team that is) to beat in over half of the sports. Central is good at one or two things, as are many schools. Everyone has to face the Orange domination right now, whether we like it or not (I don't like it >:(  )  I could disparage some things about Wartburg, but right now athletics isn't one of them.

OK, no offence to the Dutch, but lorbec I haven't seen anything particularly classy out of the Central fans in my years. Now, granted, I am a Storm fan and there is a rivalry there so my evidence is anecdotal. I can already see the response here, so in all fairness, I am not saying Storm fans are particularly classy to the Dutch either. Both fans make rude comments, both teams get rowdy and both schools make up one disgusting t-shirt after another about the other school---- I have seen it equal from both sides. Am I blaming them... heck no. But I am certainly not praising them either.

I've not seen anything woth mentioning good/bad or otherwise from any of the other schools' fans. I will say I saw the women's basketball coach go screaming off the court SHOUTING the F word after losing to SC. That's not ever cool, there are too many kids and things at those games. I am sure the pressure for athletic performance is very high for WArtburg coaches, so many she just snapped.

Cocooman- I will agree with you that Coe tennis deserves some props. Maybe not on a football message board, but  they are pretty impressive. On a related note to above however--- I have seen coach through some pretty nasty temper tantrums himself! Side note: Doesn't he coach the women too and why aren't they anywhere near as good?

dutchfan1

Actually, CooCoo, I was at both the Wartburg/Coe game last year (and the year before, and the year before that -- my cousin coaches for Coe, so I try to catch some of their major games, Wartburg being one of them.) Sorry to give you the impression that I was bitter about the "recent demise" of the Dutch. I'm not bitter at all -- I'm very realistic about what we have accomplished in the past, and where we are headed. I firmly believe that a lot of the past Dutch success can be attributed to solid coaching under Schipper. We also had a knack for recruiting some awesome talent over the years, and a tradition to live up to. We have an amazing record. Times, however, change -- the Dutch nation realizes that we have to work hard -- probably harder than before to retain that edge. Right now, we are gunning for Wartburg (and BV, and Luther, and Loras, and....) instead of the other way around. I think McMartin has potential to do an amazing job -- but right now that's what it is: potential. I'm optimistic.

Shoottoscore -- Come on, when you use a "Beaver" as your mascot, you have to expect a little ribbing now and then. I've endured my share of "wooden shoe" jokes. (Which are very tired, by the way -- no need to revive them here!!)  ;D

CocoPuff want to be:

Excuse me while I adjust my hearing aid.  What were you trying to say?

Think about it, Why would any official be against a specific team?  Give it a rest.  The Spartans beat you like a red haired step child.   :'(

When Loras beat the Knights at Walston/Hoover, the DuHawks plain and simple took us to the woodshed.  Wartburg fans were stunned at the defeat, but I don't think there was a bunch of bitching and moaning about officials.  I do remember that several of us here on the board were critical of the Wartburg performance and general lack of emotion.  To the credit of Wartburg players and coaches they regrouped and put together a good season.

Warthog--I can genuinely agree. After viewing that game (Loras at Wartburg) I also thought the Wartburg players were flat. You guys did put on a heck of a run though. I can remember leaving that stadium and thinking, "Man, I think the Knights title hopes just left...." But OH NOOOO!!!!! You pulled off a great run, and good comeback on I believe an undefeated BV team.

Coo-I believe this was the same weekend you got "jobbed" at UD. I actually know a few refs in this conference, and those guys are all business. Period.

Walston Hoover

CooCoo-Time to take off the crimson blinders for a moment. I put about 30 minutes into putting a spreadsheet together last year on who has won the most conference titles and in what. Coe has had a good tennis team the last 5 years, but to call the the most dominant program in any sport in the IIAC is not quite (or even close to) accurate when looking at consecutive titles won.
Looking at the men's sports Coe has won the last 5 titles, longer current streaks than that include:
Wartburg X-country-7 (longest streak is Luther with 11 from'71-'81)
Wartburg's Bball team won 9 straight from'67-'75
Wartburg wrestling has won 13 straight in a current streak (IMO is THEEE most dominant program in the IIAC currently-noone has beat them in a dual for something like 10 years)

Wartburg's baseball has won 9 in a row
Luther's tennis won 13 in a row from '64-76
The longest streaks on the men's side were Central's golf from '81-'96 (16)
and Luther's track from '63-78 with 16 as well
The most dominant program in the IIAC is Luther's women's tennis who has won 22 of the 23 IIAC titles.

By some of your comments,  the name fits. Welcome to the board.

I am not that familiar with McMartin.  I did play ball with his younger brother Grant who was a good guy.  I will have to be patient and see if he can get things to where they once were.  The new football field will help with recruiting though.

Guys, good points about the traditions of IIAC in all sports.  The one that gets me is Central...back in the mid-90's, they dominated everything.  They won a womens' BB title in 1993 (I think).   But when I was in school, they dropped to the conference cellar.  Despite their overall slide from dominance, Central is still a power in softball and their VB and FB teams are still in the upper half of the conference.

I realize that one day Wartburg's dynasty will come to a close -- all good things** must come to an end.  But, I still think that Wartburg will always be a wrestling powerhouse and they'll also have upper half FB and Baseball teams, as long as Willis and Holst, respectively, are still coaching.

**Whether or not this is good is subject to your own perspective I suppose :)
